John and Teresa started doing all this because
they couldn’t get their garden to grow and, upon
learning that bees would help, were encouraged
to start their own hives and become beekeepers.
Now, they are a major force for all the microapiaries
in South Florida. Since the law in Florida
prohibits more than three hives in a residential
area and unlimited resources on agricultural land,
apiaries were established. The first apiary was
founded in Oakland Park in January of 2016, with
three more now operating in the area. The one
in Coral Springs, at 3225 Sportsplex Dr., will be
opening mid-September, adjacent to the Coral
Springs Rotary Club Community Garden at the
Sportsplex. I also spoke to Howard Ehrlich, a
former beekeeper and a member of the board
of The Rotary Club, who pushed the idea of the
apiary in Coral Springs. Howard said that besides
being the largest community service organization
and helping people throughout the world, the
Rotary Club built the Community Garden eight to
10 years ago and felt the apiary would be a great
addition. Howard also felt that recognition should
be given to those businesses that helped
sponsor this project: Blue Stream Cable,
ParkCreek Surgery Center, Coral Springs
Animal Hospital, Priority Medical Center,
Pohlman Pain Associates, and
Citizens Bank. They provided
the necessary funding, with
John and Teresa handling all
the construction and operating
procedures. The apiary will be
open to the public, free of charge.
I strongly urge everyone to visit,
as it’s a great learning experience
for young and old alike.
For those of you venturing out of the Coral
Springs area, there are apiaries at these
locations: Oakland Park, 1101 NE 40th Court;
Deerfield Beach, 401 SW 4th Street; Tradewinds
Park, 3600 W. Sample Road, Coconut Creek;
Tree Tops Park, 3900 SW 100 Ave., Davie. P
