Dr. Pico was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and completed his Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology at Louisiana State University. He obtained his DVM at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine after working several years for the USDA. He has been practicing in Coral Springs for more than 28 years. COMMON GROUND Hope for Life by Rev. Sheryl Marks-Williams Associate Pastor First United Methodist of Coral Springs Life is a sacred gift, and can be fulfilling and rewarding in spite of the varied individual circumstances in which we exist. From the moment we are born, we are thrust into the journey of finding meaning and purpose, a journey consciously engaged by many, and realized by few. This life work — rewarding for some and despairing for others, is largely determined by the attitudes with which we embrace our task, as well as the lens through which we view our journey. For various reasons we approach the task from different angles, and this offers us different anchors, which keep us grounded. However, regardless of the angle we choose, hope is the “very fuel that animates our human species, what breath is to the physical body, hope is to the human spirit.” While there are multiple lenses through which we can view life, the lens of faith is particularly instrumental. Faith provides a window into the realms of the unknowns of life, and a firm anchor from which we navigate our journeys. Although there are many faiths, each with unique characteristics, from my vantage point, the Christian faith proffers strength and direction for today, and hope for the tomorrows of life. This is particularly useful since “the malady of despair is the most pervasive problem in our communities today. It fools people into thinking and feeling that there is no meaningful future to look forward to, and no positive possibilities to draw them toward the future.” Christian hope is centered in a life source beyond the self, and is rooted in God the Creator. It therefore provides an orientation for life, which is God-centered and not self-centered, thereby removing the burden of ‘ordering our own universe.’ While we do have the responsibility of making this world a good place, the job of fixing others is not ours. We can allow the Creator to make them into who they were created to be. Despite our crucial need for hope there’s nothing simple or magical about the act of hoping, for there’s always the risk of disappointment. For those who live with a faith which is guilt inducing rather than redemptive, the effect can lead to further despair. The saying goes, “as long as there is life there is hope.” The deeper truth is that as long as there’s hope there’s life, for it is hope that gives us a future orientation and a will to persevere in spite of despairing circumstances. Christian hope is inextricably bound to our faith as “the evidence of things not seen.” Faith in a good and loving God provides the basis on which Christians trust that, although they cannot see through to bright tomorrows, the God in whom they trust has their best interests at heart and will work the circumstances out for their good. This faith and hope not only fuels the soul for the great future, but also provides passion and purpose for our day-to-day lives. As such we can carry on, for where there is hope there is life. P by Pastor Jason Paugh First Presbyterian Church of Coral Springs Christianity is full of paradoxes — “Whoever finds his life,” Jesus said “will lose it, but whoever loses His life for my sake will find it.” (Mt. 10:39). “The last will be first and the first last.” (Mt. 20:16). “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant.” (Mt. 20:26). Statements like these almost seem contradictory. Yet they describe, in essence, the true nature of God’s kingdom. It’s not surprising, therefore, to hear the apostle Paul boasting of his weaknesses in 2 Corinthians 12:9,10: “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Paul was a man who endured much affliction throughout his life and ministry — “Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked…in danger from rivers…from robbers...from my own people…in the city… in the wilderness…at sea; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.” (2 Cor. 11:25-27) Yet Paul was able to endure and even rejoice in his sufferings. (Rom. 5:3; Col. 1:24) But why? How was he able to find such strength in the midst of such tribulation? Not by the grit of his own self-determination, but by looking in faith to the One whose “power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Cor. 12:9) “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Phil. 4:13) What distinguishes the strength of a Christian believer, therefore, is that “we put no confidence in the flesh.” (Phil. 3:3) Rather, we find in Christ what we lack to produce in ourselves — the strength and resolve to persevere through any and every trial of life. This is why the writer of Hebrews exhorts his readers, who find themselves growing weary in running life’s race, not by urging them to “suck it up” or to pull themselves up by their own spiritual bootstraps, but to “consider him [Jesus]…so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.” (Heb. 12:3) This is the good news of Christianity! Like Paul, we may be weak, yet we rejoice because “the LORD is [our] strength and [our] song, and he has become [our] salvation.” (Ex.15:2) “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.” (Act. 14:22), yet we do not lose heart, for this reason: “The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary…He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength…they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (Isa. 40:28-31) P the PARKLANDER 117
