SuspenseMagazine.com From the Editor We were going to write an article this month about the Casey Anthony case and have some guest experts come in with their opinions. However, I felt, “Why give the person any more attention than she has already received?” I did start thinking and doing some research and wondered how could a jury see all the evidence and still come up with another conclusion in only ten hours. I don’t know what was more alarming—the time frame or the actual verdict rendered in that time frame. What made twelve jurors acquit Casey Anthony so quickly? It made me think: Has CSI, Law and Order, NCIS and other shows spoiled the court system by making jurors think that real life should live up to those scripts? All of the law and criminal shows out there have one thing in common: they solve the crime with very advanced technology in a short amount of time with lots of damaging evidence against the suspect. They are openand-shut cases. In the real world of the justice system, things are not that easy. About seven years ago, my car was broken into. The thief tried to steal the car by breaking the ignition. I called the police and they came out to gather evidence and get my story. I asked them, “Can’t you pull fingerprints or get some DNA to put in the system to catch them?” The cop looked at me and said, “This ain’t CSI. We can’t pull fingerprints off of all surfaces, and the chances of them getting a print or anything is slim to none.” I didn’t know any better. I thought: Pull some prints from the steering wheel or the door handle, but the only thing they took was an empty Diet Coke can, in case the suspects touched the can, since they could possibly pull a print from there. Anyway, my case went in the open category and will never be solved. I think jurors feel the same way. They want fingerprints, DNA, video, forensics, anything to actually put the suspect there. However, most evidence in the Casey Anthony case was not physical evidence, but more circumstantial, which in some cases is just as good at putting the pieces of the puzzle together. There was a ton of evidence sitting in the jurors’ faces; they just chose not to look at it. CSI is probably the best example of how TV is simply TV. People need to know that Hollywood is in the business of entertainment and all the shows that are shown are fictional and exaggerations of the truth. The fact is that only about twenty percent of all crime is actually solved, far less that most people realize. If law enforcement could actually do all the things shown on those shows, crime would be way down, but that is not reality. I think that is what we really need to focus on, reality. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of those jurors actually think that Laurence Fishburne is a real forensic expert. Maybe if the prosecutors called in some of the cast members to testify, we could have justice for that little girl. Because those twelve jurors dropped the ball, Caylee Anthony will never grow up or have any justice in her death.
