e able to stand on its own, but even then I don’t think I’d be
able to write from his viewpoint. He’s part of the Bay Mills
Indian Community, after all, and while I can write from Alex’s
viewpoint—as a good friend who’s close to Vinnie and who can
see much of what Vinnie’s going through—at the end of the day
Alex goes home as an outsider. It would take an insider to tell
an insider’s story, I think. Does that make sense?
S. MAG.: If you could solve one mystery for yourself, what
would that be?
SH: Where Jimmy Hoffa is buried. No wait, maybe that’s a
bad answer, I imagine there are certain people who definitely
wouldn’t want that mystery solved.
S. MAG.: What do you see as the biggest challenge for writers
in the future, with the ever changing landscape in publishing?
SH: It’s already so hard just to turn out all of the noise and
to concentrate on the writing itself, you know, on the natural
storytelling art that really hasn’t changed that much in all of
these years. With so many changes happening so quickly, it’s
becoming so much harder to keep yourself focused on the one
and only thing you can control—how good your next book is!
S. MAG.: You have Alex McKnight sitting in front of you,
what would you like to ask him?
SH: That’s easy. I’d ask him what kind of trouble he’s going to
get into next! That’s all these stories are, really. I don’t know
where they’re going when I start them. The first draft is literally
me finding out what’s going to happen. So that’s essentially the
same question I ask every time.
S. MAG.: What does the future hold for Steve Hamilton?
SH: Fifty more years of doing the one thing I always wanted to
do when I grew up . . . I hope.
