Things That Only Come out at Night Night The Bogeyman OnE thing that COMES Out at night Can’t bE dESCRibEd with wORdS. This thing has no color, shape or form, no description that is for certain. And yet it has mesmerized and terrified children for hundreds and maybe even thousands of years. The thing I speak of is the infamous Bogeyman, one of the most horrifying things that come out at night. As a child, I could not tell you what this creature of the night looked like, only that he was real. The Bogeyman was a he and was capable of hiding in closets, under beds, under cars or car seats, even in the darkest part of my hallway as I raced furiously to the light switch that seemed to drift farther away with each step I took. He was the very reason every inch of my body was cloaked in blankets, every night of my childhood and the reason why now, even as an adult, pitch darkness always brings about a certain unease for me. Where did the Bogeyman come from and how has this imaginary figure shaped our lives? Hopefully we can shed some light on this dark subject and learn a bit more about this thing that comes out at night. The origins of the word “Bogeyman” are conflicted, but it has possible roots in several languages, including Welsh, Slavonic and Lithuanian. The appearance and characteristics of the Bogeyman varies from one believer to another and from one culture to another. These are usually defined by the folklore of the region and by the imagination of the believer. Though he has no shape, color or form, the Bogeyman has become the embodiment of terror for children all over the world. It is widely believed that Bogeyman tales originated as a teaching tool or deterrent for bad behavior in children. If a child misbehaved or refused to go to bed, the Bogeyman was a quick remedy. Also, the tale was used on a child who sucked their thumb or pacifier longer than the parents deemed appropriate. Now that is a surefire way to garner good conduct in little ones or a means of corrupting their poor minds and twisting their thinking for life . There are different versions of the Bogeyman and descriptions ranging from subtle to horrifying, all depending on where you live. In the midwest United States, some believe the Bogeyman isn’t really a man at all, but rather, a woman. In other parts of the U.S., the Bogeyman manifests as “green fog” or vapor, and hides under beds or in closets. In other parts of the world, however, this thing that comes out at night is much more deeply rooted in the culture, much more sinister and his tale spans decades. In many Latin countries as well as Eastern Europe, Haiti and Asia, the Bogeyman is portrayed as a man with a sack who carries away naughty children. In the Spanish telling of the Bogeyman, known as “El Hombre del Saco,” not only carries the children away, but he also eats them! And in Chile, the “El Viego del Saco” is an insane murderer who is permitted to roam the streets in the evening hours. As he walks, he collects children who are late for dinner or who have not made it home before sundown.
