FRIGHTFUL FAMILY FUN
Old Pasadena hosts Halloween, Day of the Dead events
The Old Pasadena Management District (OPMD) is hosting a
series of events for families to celebrate Halloween and the Day of
the Dead.
From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 27, One Colorado hosts
its annual Pumpkin Decorating Extravaganza in which kids can
get busy with glitter glue, pipe cleaners and washable markers to
decorate their own pumpkin to take home.
From 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday — Halloween night — costumed
ghosts and ghoulies are invited to trick or treat store-to-store in
Old Pasadena. Look for the Ambassador Guides in the yellow shirts and friendly costumed
characters who will be handing out treats, greeting visitors and posing for photos. All activities
are free and open to all.
Also on Halloween evening, One Colorado offers free “haunted photos” in the courtyard
for costumed kids and families. Families are asked to arrive early because the photos will end
at 8 p.m. and are first-come, first-served. One Colorado will also host a free screening of the
animated film “Coraline” at 7 p.m.
From Nov. 2 to 4, Old Pasadena will host a Day of the Dead Weekend, featuring a self-guided
tour of 20 altars honoring the dead at stores throughout the district. There will also be three
community altars at which anyone can leave memorial items to honor their own ancestors, at
the following locations:
* Big Bang Theory Way, 109 E. Union Street. This location will be staged only during the
Salsa on the Alley event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2.
* Indiana Colony, 59 E. Colorado Blvd.
* CTRL Collective, 45 S. Arroyo Parkway.
For more information on all the events, call OPMD at (626) 356-9725 or visit oldpasadena.
Market
Those seeking hand-crafted, American-made holiday gifts
can shop to their heart’s content Friday through Sunday at the
Contemporary Crafts Market, located at the Pasadena Convention
Center, 300 E. Green St., Pasadena.
The market will feature hand-crafted furnishings, ceramics,
Nothing is mass produced. Everything is unique, one-of-a-kind and available for purchase.”
SWEET SCARES
South Pasadena-based Sugarmynt Gallery hosts tribute exhibit to classic
horror film ‘Halloween’
Forty years ago, the tree-lined suburban streets of South
Pasadena formed the locations for the independent horror
film “Halloween.” It also inspired 10 follow-up films under the
“Halloween” brand name, including a new sequel this past weekend
that broke box office records by making nearly $80 million in just
three days.
Those wishing to get a spooky, fun and informative look at
how the series began can stop by the South Pasadena art gallery
Sugarmynt now through Oct. 31 to see the “Haddonfield 4” exhibit.
Named after the fictional Illinois town that South Pasadena filled in for, it features a fascinating
mix of framed behind-the-scenes photographs by the official set photographer Kim Gottlieb
Walker and more than 30 artworks inspired by the film and its vicious killer, Michael Myers.
Best of all, the gallery is located right next door to the actual building used as Michael
Myers’ house in “Halloween,” and a list of other key locations (all in walking distance) is also
offered at the gallery.
“Haddonfield 4” runs through Oct. 31 at Sugarmynt Gallery, 810 Meridian Ave., South
Pasadena. Admission is $10 to see the exhibit, and $15 on Halloween. Call (626) 222-7257
or visitsugarmynt.com. n
