MY MOMENT OF ELATION WAS QUICKLY REPLACED BY A FEELING OF SICKNESS AND HORROR.
After 13 years of applying, I had drawn a Wyoming Shiras moose tag. However, the tag was not for the area I had
intended. With some errant keystroke I’d applied for a hunting district one number higher than that of my dream hunt.
Instead, I drew an area with limited public land and even less moose habitat. Included in that prize was the loss of
preference points and a five-year waiting period before becoming eligible to apply again. I frantically sent off a letter
to the tag review board in hopes someone in Cheyenne would take pity on me.
