KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
FENDING OFF THE WOLVES
SUDBURY MAKES THEIR ONLY STOP IN KINGSTON FOR THE 2018-19
The Sudbury Wolves were a struggling team for
multiple years. That allowed them to pick high in
the OHL draft and get some impressive players on
their roster. Those players now have Sudbury competing
for a division title. David Levin and Quinton
Byfield were both first overall picks for the Wolves.
They are leading their team in scoring. Ukko-Pekka
Luukkonen was a nice surprise for the Wolves. The
Buffalo Sabres prospect was the third overall pick in
the import draft a few months ago. He committed to
the Wolves and is now near the top of all goaltending
statistical categories in the OHL.
Kingston doesn’t have the star power this year
that the Wolves have, but they played a competitive
game last Saturday in Sudbury. Brendan Bonello
had a strong game allowing just two goals, but
Kingston wasn’t able to beat Luukkonen. Despite
that, the team did a good job of handling Levin and
Byfield, allowing them to record just one point each.
Sudbury is playing their fourth straight game
against an East Division opponent. They made a
stop in Peterborough last night and will head to Ottawa
after this game for a Sunday afternoon tilt to
wrap up the road trip.
Kingston is also playing three games in three
days. After hosting Sudbury they will welcome London
tomorrow and then head to Oshawa for a Sunday
evening game.
The Frontenacs have handled the Wolves when
they come to Kingston in recent years. Kingston
has won the last 5 meetings at Leon’s Centre. The
Wolves have not won in Kingston since October of
2012. The all time head to head matchup is nearly
a draw. The two teams have faced each other 160
times. Kingston has a 70-72-18 record in those
games. KF
Jason Robertson wasn’t born in what is
considered a “hockey hot bed”. Born on July
22, 1999 in Arcadia, California, Robertson may
have been expected to play baseball, or football,
but he was naturally gifted at hockey and his
family recognized that early on.
Initially, they moved to Michigan to allow Jason
to play at a higher level. In his OHL draft year,
Jason joined the Don Mills Flyers of the GTMMHL
which marked his first time playing for a Canadian
based team. That move allowed scouts to see
more of Jason, and the Frontenacs decided to
the second round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
A year later they would sign him to his entry level
contract.
He came back to Kingston after being drafted
and continued to do what he was doing the year
before. He put up a career high 87 points and
went over the 40 goal plateau for the second time
in his career. In the playoffs he scored a career
best 10 goals and tied his previous career best of
18 points.
Robertson is returning to Kingston this season
as one of the veteran players and he has been
spend their 4th round pick to select him in the
2015 OHL Priority Selection.
As a 16 year old, Robertson made the
Frontenacs roster and contributed immediately.
He scored 18 goals in his rookie season and
people quickly started to see that he was a natural
goal scorer. As a rookie, his ice-time in the playoffs
was limited but he did record his first OHL playoff
goal in the 4 games he played.
The following season Robertson made a name
for himself. He led the Frontenacs in scoring by 30
points. He scored 42 goals finishing tied for 6th in
the OHL. When playoff time rolled around, there
was no question that he would be a key contributor
for Kingston and he delivered. In just 11 games,
Robertson put up 18 points which put him 13th in
OHL scoring during the playoffs despite Kingston
being eliminated in the second round.
The Dallas Stars were huge fans of what they
saw out of Robertson and they selected him in
OFFICIAL GAMEDAY MAGAZINE, VOLUME 46, ISSUE 06
named an Assistant Captain for the second year in
a row. Kingston will be expecting a lot of goals out of
the fan favorite, but perhaps even more important
than that is his leadership in the dressing room
with a young core group on the roster.
USE REVENGE AS MOTIVATION
It was less than a week ago that these two
teams met in Sudbury for the first time this
season. The Wolves won that game 2-0.
Tonight, they meet for the final time of the
2018-19 season. That means the Frontenacs
have just one shot at tying the season series.
Getting revenge after a loss can work as great
motivation, especially when that loss came
so recently. Not only do the players want to
avoid losing two straight to the same team,
but they also don’t want to wait an entire year
before getting their next shot to beat them.
GET ON THE SCOREBOARD EARLY
It’s no secret that Kingston has had trouble
scoring goals at times this season. Mix
that with the fact that Sudbury is already
feeling confident after shutting out Kingston
last Saturday and the Fronts could find
themselves in a tough situation if they
don’t score a goal early on in the game. By
scoring an early goal, the Fronts would boost
their confidence while deflating the Wolves
confidence. If the game progresses and
Kingston isn’t able to score early on, Sudbury
is going to feel like there is a wall in front of
their net and it will be even harder to score
on them late.
KEEP THE DYNAMIC DUO IN CHECK
Sudbury has some great players, but two stick
out above the rest. David Levin is playing in
his fourth OHL season and is really looking
like the star player Sudbury expected when
they drafted him 1st overall in 2015. The
other player is Quinton Byfield, who was the
1st overall pick this past April, but is already
an impressive offensive player in the league.
Both of these players made incredible plays
leading to goals when these teams met last
Saturday. If both of those players are getting
on the scoresheet, Sudbury is very tough to
beat. Kingston’s best chance to win will be
if those names aren’t announced following a
goal tonight.
Some players don’t put up big numbers, or play a
“flashy” game, but still play a vital role on a team.
Jacob Paquette is one of those players. Although he
isn’t always the player people are talking about after
the game, he is the type of player that coaches are
thankful to have on their side.
Kingston used their second round pick in 2015
to select the Ottawa, ON native, who played his
minor hockey for the Ottawa Jr. 67’s. He was part of
a championship team in both his minor bantam and
bantam years. In his minor midget draft year, Paquette
was an assistant captain for the Jr. 67’s.
Paquette and selected him in the 7th round of the
2017 NHL Entry Draft.
Paquette returned to Kingston for the 2017-18
season and was a big part of the deep playoff run the
Frontenacs had that season. He played key minutes
against opposing teams top lines in important playoff
games. Staying true to form, he was very difficult to
beat in 1-on-1 situations, and his ability to stay calm
under pressure helped get the team to the Conference
Final.
Paquette is potentially playing his final year of
junior hockey (he is overage eligible next season).
Playing a defensive position in the OHL is a tough
task with any level of experience, but especially for a 16
year old. Jacob welcomed the challenge in his rookie
season. He scored 3 goals and added 10 assists,
but the most impressive number was his +24. It was
evident early on that coaches could rely on Paquette in
all situations in the defensive zone. Hockey Canada felt
the same way and gave him a spot in the World U-17
Hockey Challenge.
Jacob missed some games early on in his NHL
draft year due to a broken hand suffered at the Team
Canada U-18 camp. His defensive game stayed
strong, but his offensive numbers slipped slightly while
playing on a team that struggled to score goals. The
confidence level with his coaches continued to grow
as Paquette was named an assistant captain as a 17-
year old player.
The Nashville Predators liked the progress of
OFFICIAL GAMEDAY MAGAZINE, VOLUME 46, ISSUE 06
He is looking to have another strong season and sign
an entry level contract at some point this year with
Nashville, allowing him to play pro hockey next season.
