Some players don’t put up big numbers, or play a
“flashy” game, but still play a vital role on a team.
Jacob Paquette is one of those players. Although he
isn’t always the player people are talking about after
the game, he is the type of player that coaches are
thankful to have on their side.
Kingston used their second round pick in 2015
to select the Ottawa, ON native, who played his
minor hockey for the Ottawa Jr. 67’s. He was part of
a championship team in both his minor bantam and
bantam years. In his minor midget draft year, Paquette
was an assistant captain for the Jr. 67’s.
Paquette and selected him in the 7th round of the
2017 NHL Entry Draft.
Paquette returned to Kingston for the 2017-18
season and was a big part of the deep playoff run the
Frontenacs had that season. He played key minutes
against opposing teams top lines in important playoff
games. Staying true to form, he was very difficult to
beat in 1-on-1 situations, and his ability to stay calm
under pressure helped get the team to the Conference
Final.
Paquette is potentially playing his final year of
junior hockey (he is overage eligible next season).
Playing a defensive position in the OHL is a tough
task with any level of experience, but especially for a 16
year old. Jacob welcomed the challenge in his rookie
season. He scored 3 goals and added 10 assists,
but the most impressive number was his +24. It was
evident early on that coaches could rely on Paquette in
all situations in the defensive zone. Hockey Canada felt
the same way and gave him a spot in the World U-17
Hockey Challenge.
Jacob missed some games early on in his NHL
draft year due to a broken hand suffered at the Team
Canada U-18 camp. His defensive game stayed
strong, but his offensive numbers slipped slightly while
playing on a team that struggled to score goals. The
confidence level with his coaches continued to grow
as Paquette was named an assistant captain as a 17-
year old player.
The Nashville Predators liked the progress of
He is looking to have another strong season and sign
an entry level contract at some point this year with
Nashville, allowing him to play pro hockey next season.
