WINTER WELLBEING During the run-up to Christmas, we’re often presented with a romantic version of winter. Pristine snowflakes, crisp, clear skies, rosy cheeks and jovial laughter. The reality can be a little different, however, and as we get older, the lack of sunlight and damp weather can represent a challenge to our health. So here are a few tips aimed at helping you take good care of yourself as you navigate the winter months. As we all know, prevention is better than cure, so make sure you take advantage of the vaccinations on offer from the NHS. You are eligible for a free flu vaccine this year (2018/19) if you are aged 65 or over on March 31 2019. Last year thousands of people eligible for the flu jab didn’t get one. Public Health England claim that the flu vaccine could prevent as many as 30,000 GP visits! Another jab offered by the NHS to over 65’s is the pneumococcal or “pneumo” jab. This is a one-off vaccination which offers protection from a nasty bacteria which can lead to pneumonia, septicaemia and meningitis. Be sure to have a chat with your GP or Pharmacist about getting your immune system ready for winter. Another preventative measure we can all take is to improve our diet. Making sure you include your 5 portions of fruit and veg each day is particularly important during the winter, when we need our bodies at full strength to stave off coughs and colds. We all know plenty of Vitamin C can help boost our immune system, but did you know that red peppers contain 3 times as much Vitamin C as an orange? Maybe a tasty stir-fry is just the boost your body needs at this time of year? Many people find that as the nights draw in, their mood dips a little. If you’re feeling a little down once summer has departed, you’re certainly not alone. It’s believed that around one in 15 of us suffers from “Seasonal Affective Disorder” or SAD, sometimes known as the “Winter Blues”. The symptoms can range from anxiety, lethargy, insomnia and it can lead to a weakened immune system allowing other ailments to take hold. Two things that are thought to be important in combatting SAD are getting outdoors and regular exercise, so you can kill two birds with one stone with a bracing walk. Whether you’re feeling the winter blues or not, anyone keeping active during the winter will reap some health benefits. Whilst spending hours at a gym or becoming obsessed with the latest exercise fad may seem like something best left to the youngsters, the simple pleasure of a good walk is something that’s accessible to almost all of us. These days many health experts believe walking is the best form of exercise available. Regular walking can improve your heart health, prevent weight gain, strengthen your bones & joints and even help to stave off dementia. And it’s free! So what are you waiting for?
