recently captured the North Ryde RSL Women’s Bowling Club Consistency Championship. In a hard fought contest, they were the first to reach 130 points - staying focused in what is a challenging event. Both Ivy and Shirley also competed recently in the Champion of Champion Pairs competition. The North Ryde RSL bowls contingent are proud of both ladies’ achievements. GRETTA Blunt, Patty Gore and Joan Lloyd (pictured) were recently crowned Hunters Hill Ladies Bowling Club Triples champions for 2018. They defeated runners up Kaye Stewart, Anita Lowe and Judy Doyle in the final. DENISTONE Sports took out the annual Friendship Day Bowls Challenge against Putney-Tennyson last Sunday - with evergreen veterans showing the way. Power hitting Woods and Hobden shine for Pirates AFTER three consecutive washouts, the Hunters Hill Pirates cricket team has opened its 2018-19 City & Suburban Cricket campaign with a victory over St George Vets at Boronia Park Oval No 1. Dashing knocks from James Wood (15 not out) and stalwart Andrew Hobden (14 not out) helped the Pirates eclipse St George’s tally of 7-153 in the 32nd over. Requiring 25 runs off the final five overs, Hobden and Woods put the Vets to the sword - scoring 11 off the following over before a massive Woods six broke the Vets’ spirit as the pair added another 14 off consecutive overs to bring the game to a close. Woods had earlier picked up a wicket with Hobden snaring 2-16 off seven overs and the sharp Manish Misra also collecting two wickets in a fine display. A change in the bowling saw Andy Ball thrust into the attack and grabbing 2-30 off seven with some well-crafted spin. Ashley Emanuel had a good day in the field, snaring two catches. With the pitch holding up really well it was not an easy run chase with plenty for the St George bowlers to work with. After the early dismissal of Emanuel, it was up to Rodney Bourgonjen (37) and new recruit Sumer Hingorani (47) to steady the ship. Together they pushed the score to 58 before Bourgonjen was bowled. But Alex Miller (17) combined for a partnership of 46 before Sumer was tragically run out just three runs shy of a maiden 50 for the Hillies.
Wednesday 31 October, 2018 THE WEEKLY TIMES 31 Blues caps for Tiger cubs Harry and Liam ROOKIE Sydney Cricket Club first grade all rounders Harry Manenti (pictured) and Liam Scott have underlined their potential with selection in the NSW Metro U/19 representative cricket team. The talented Tigers duo will line up for the Junior Bluebags at the Cricket Australia National U/19 Championships to be staged in Adelaide during December. Manenti and Scott, who were blooded in Sydney’s top grade X1 in recent weeks, are two of the State’s most promising cricketers with bright futures in the sport. They have come through the Junior Blues Development system where they were both identified as elite players from an early age. 18 year old Harry - the son of premiership winning Eastwood rugby coach and Australian Womens Rugby Sevens mentor John Manenti - grabbed three wickets with his seam bowling in the Tigers’ local derby clash with Northern Districts last Saturday at Mark Taylor Oval. On opening day action, the strapping cub snared 3-46 off an economical 15 over spell and combined with elder brother - spinner Ben Manenti (3-68 off 32 overs) and paceman Alex Glendenning (2-30 off eleven) to help dismiss their rivals for 256. The Manenti siblings were on song with the ball and had the Rangers tottering at 7-146 before all rounder Nathan Smith - batting at number nine - carved out an unbeaten 63 and figured in key lower order partnerships to give the home side a competitive tally to defend. Smith salvaged some re- Michael Maguire to coach Tigers Under the new agreement, Maguire will take on the Head Coach role for at least the next three seasons. He replaces Ivan Cleary, who was released from the final two years of his contract to link with the Penrith Panthers immediately. Maguire, a premiership winning Head Coach with the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Wigan Warriors, is currently in charge of the New Zealand Kiwis side and will join the Tigers at the end of the Kiwis’ current three match Test series against England in the United Kingdom in November. England opened the series with a thrilling 18-16 victory over the Kiwis in the First Test at Hull’s KCom Stadium last weekend. Wests Tigers Chair Marina Go welcomed Maguire to the club. “On behalf of everyone at Wests Tigers I’d like to welcome Michael to the club,” said Go. “Michael has had success at the highest level and we look forward to having him as a part of Wests Tigers for at least the coming three seasons. “I’d like to thank our stakeholders and members for their patience during this process,” she said. “This was a situation not of our making but I’m proud spect when he combined with Zak Honeybrook (29) for a handy eighth wicket stand of 44 and a last wicket union of 52 with tailender Charles Taylor (28). Di Blasio cracked 115 as the Tigers compiled on opening day total of 7-304 with support from Marlon Rodrigo (73). Record-breaking Holy Cross Ryde quartet earn Australian jumpers FAMOUS sporting nursery Holy Cross College Ryde have created history by producing four Australian representatives in the one season in four different codes. Pictured are outstanding prospects Christian Cirino (soccer), Jordan Hill (touch football), Beni Teaupa (rugby league) and Joshua Rizk (Sevens Rugby) who earned national honours in their chosen sports during 2018. Holy Cross are believed to be the first school to have achieved this unique feat with the talented quartet stamping their mark at elite level. Emerging 16 year old midfielder Cirino of Putney will represent the Australian Schoolboys soccer team on a tour of England, Ireland and Wales during January 2019. The exciting NSW Academy product will pit his skills against some of the best young footballers in Europe and is certain to come under the scrutiny of leading talent scouts. 17 year old Hill, a promising link/winger, helped Australia win the World U/18 Touch Football championship in Malaysia - nabbing a phenomenal 28 tries during the three day event, Fleet-footed Jordan, who scored an impressive nine tries in one match, starred for the Aussies as they toppled New Zealand in the final to bring home the trophy. The Year 11 student is a product of the Western Suburbs Touch Football Association and has a bright future in the sport. Powerhouse forward Teaupa gained selection in the Australian Schoolboys rugby league team that will tour England and France during November. The skilful Canterbury S.G Ball prop forced his way into the squad with strong performances for NSW Catholic Colleges at this year’s National Schoolboys U/18 Rugby League Championships that were staged at Kingscliff. Versatile Rizk, 18, has capped a meteoric rise into the Australian Sevens rugby squad with dashing performances around the country. Josh, who represented Balmain in the NSWRL U/18 S.G Ball Cup series this season, was also named in the extended Australian Barbarians Rugby Schoolboys squad after top displays at the National Carnival. He is a product of the Dundas Shamrocks Junior Rugby League Club but has shown the class, footwork and speed to make it to the top in Sevens international rugby. MEANWHILE another Holy Cross College Ryde student Sam Thompson - a former TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year finalist - continues to excell at BMX bike riding. Thompson won the Australian 2018 National Series for the 15-16yrs Cruiser Boys after dominating four separate events in his age class in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. He achieved this from four events out of seven to clinch the title. Sam will receive a trophy and jersey during the first round of the National Series next year which will be staged at his home track at the Sydney BMX Club, Sydney Olympic Park. Thompsonhas one big final BMX meet and that is the 2018 Victorian BMX State Titles on November 15-16 and hopes to defend his titles from 2017 in the 15-16yrs Cruiser Boys and Retro 14-39 Classes. He is also eager to improve his 20 inch result of sixth fromlast year. Samis now riding his road bike, doing big kilometress and would like to compete in races in the near future, to see where he sits. He is also into Down Hill Mountain Biking and hopes to compete in some races very soon as well. Holy Cross Ryde’s Sports Co-ordinator Tim White said the College was proud of its achievements on the sporting field and in the classroom. “To round off our sporting honours we also had outstanding Learning Growth in the Naplan tests which again shows our all round talents,” said Tim. “With our increasing enrolments it also shows the type of student we are lucky to have at Holy Cross,” he added. “Like we say at Holy Cross outstanding results- but even better students!
