The poles will fly the flags of New Zealand, Australia and the flag of Aboriginal people in recognition of citizens from Ryde who served in World War One as well as those Anzacs who made the ultimate sacrifice. Ryde Memorials Book Launch Bennelong MP John Alexander OAM will launch a new Ryde Historical Society book “Ryde Remembers: World War 1 Memorials of the Ryde District” on Saturday November 10 at 2pm at historic “Willandra” 770 Victoria Road Ryde. Book will cost $20. Around 2,000 men and women served in World War 1 from Ryde district and 312 did not return home. The Ryde Historical Society has been re- searching the memorials which honoured he men and women who served. Wednesday 31 October, 2018 THE WEEKLY TIMES 9 Students plant 150 trees to celebrate 150 years of education in Hunters Hill THE Hunters Hill community presented local Villa Maria Catholic Primary School with the first of 150 trees to commemorate this month’s 150th Anniversary of Catholic Primary School Education in Hunters Hill. The trees were presented by Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts and Hunters Hill Deputy Mayor Ben Collins and were planted by students under the supervision of School Principal Kevin Turner. Mr Roberts said each of the water gum, coast banksia willow-leaf hakea and old man banksia trees represnted a year in the life of an outstanding contribution to education by the Marist Order and the Sisters of St Joseph. “Each tree represents a brother, a sister, a teacher, a parent, a student and a staff member who have contributed to a proud tradition,” Mr Roberts said. “Just as we have received the gifts of faith and knowledge from past generations we give this gift of trees to future generations.” Deputy Mayor Collins said the trees we an appropriate gift to the school because Hunters Hill’s parks and gardens are among the natural features of this beautiful harbourside municipality. Mr Turner agreed. “This is absolutely a special day for us,” he said. “And like the strenth of a forest, the strength of Hunters Hill can be found in the strength of our Catholic schools.” The students said they are thrilled the trees were chosen because they are trees that can be inhabited by wildlife. “We will be able to hear the birds in these trees outside our classroom window and this will make us very happy,” they said. Mr Roberts and Deputy Mayor Collins said they hoped the trees would be fully grown by the time of the Bicentenary of Catholic Primary School Education in Hunters Hill. “I want to particularly acknowledge the wonderful work done at this school by Kevin Turner and I look forward to him serving many more years here,” Mr Roberts said.
