Prime Time Ribbon Cutting Ceremony “We are hoping that all middle schoolers extend their day in Prime Time - finding a passion and gaining fun experiences along the way. The choices are fun, innovative, and an entirely new after school experience from what they have done in the past! We, the Prime Time staff, are excited to start this journey!” ~ Eddy Davis, Duke School Auxiliary Programs Manager. Fun Everyone wants to have fun—especially our “You have a lot of choices. While still weeks away from her first dance recital in May, five-year-old Scarlett Unger already had a Broadway musical on her resume. before her first performance. She practiced her lines at home in the weeks before the show with the help of her family. Scarlett, then a Duke School preschooler, was one of two local girls chosen to perform in the touring production of Waitress at the Durham Performing Arts Center. Scarlett appeared in four performances as Lulu, the daughter of the titular waitress and baker, Jenna. “She likes to make pies,” Scarlett said of her character. Lulu appears in the show’s final scene, set in Jenna’s pie shop, where she emerges from behind Scarlett said she was excited and not nervous during the performances. Despite being on stage in front of thousands of people, she had no trouble remembering her lines and choreography. “Nothing was hard,” she said. She said her favorite part of Waitress was saying “a lot” in response to another character who asks how many pie orders the shop has received. She also enjoyed her costume—a pair of a large stack of pie boxes to Photo Credit DPAC overalls—and styling her hair. “I greet her mother and dance with much of the show’s principal cast. Scarlett got the part through a competitive audition open to about 60 Triangle-area four- and five-year-olds. The production casts two local girls to share the role of Lulu in each city on its tour. Scarlett rehearsed her scene only once on stage did two ponytails and I did two clips that were two strawberries—a yellow one and a pink one,” she said. Scarlett attends weekly dance classes and said she would like to do more plays in the future. She lives in Chapel Hill with her parents, Ron and Fabi Unger, and two older sisters, Sofia and Stella.
