Duke School Welcomes
Gift of Securities
When Keith and Beverly McRae enrolled their son, Lincoln, at Duke School at the beginning
of sixth grade, they were concerned about him attending a school where he knew no one,
at an age when a lot of kids begin to face the struggles of adolescence.
They quickly learned they had nothing to fear.
“Something that stood out to me at that difficult juncture for him, was that he was very
welcomed into the Duke School community by the Duke School Middle School students
themselves,” Beverly said.
Four years later, as Lincoln enters his sophomore year of high school, his parents look back
at his Duke School experience with positive memories, from his success academically to
the friends he made.
It’s for these and other reasons that
the McRaes decided to continue to
support the school through a gift
of appreciated securities this year.
A gift of appreciated securities
(stock) is a unique way to support
Duke School that can often allow
the giver to make a larger gift
than he or she thought possible. If
those securities have appreciated
in value, the person gifting them
has the opportunity to avoid the
capital gains tax that otherwise
would apply to that appreciation if
the securities were sold.

It wasn’t an option Keith and Beverly
had considered until speaking with Director of Development Kenneth W. Chandler.
“It was much more straight-forward than I would have thought,” Keith said. “It’s easy, and
Kenneth was very responsive to brainstorming on that side.”
The McRaes see their gift providing opportunities for students and faculty to continue to
flourish in the future.
“I’d like to continue to support and give to Duke School because the option to send a
child to Duke School was so important to us at the time, and we’d like to keep that open
to the rest of the community in a small way,” Beverly said.
