Duke School Under the Oak Magazine, Fall 2018

The day after our pet election, we learned the
results of the presidential election. Many of the
children expressed disappointment; however,
it was all shared in a way that was constructive,
honest and kind. It was such a shift from the start
of the year.
At Duke School, we firmly believe that within
our strong curriculum and through modeling,
practice, and authentic opportunities, young
children can develop skills to be empathetic,
kind, caring citizens. When this happens, they will
make a difference in the world!
Meeting the Needs of Bees

During our second grade “Critters in the Wild”
project last fall, students noticed a problem—
pollinators were dying. After researching the
issue, they realized humans are partly responsible.
This inspired them to become part of the solution.
Tery and I took our class to visit a Bee Hotel in
nearby Hillsborough, and even met with the
architect. Using the design thinking process,
our students combined their knowledge of
architectural design with what they knew about
bees to create their own hotels. They pitched
the idea to build mason bee hotels on campus to
Head of School Dave Michelman, Lower School
Director Nicole Thompson, and visiting educators
from China.
Dave was impressed and asked, “When do you
need an answer?” Student Avi answered, “Now!”
The answer was “Yes!”

The completed hotel proudly resides outside of
Duke School’s second/third grade building. If you
look closely, you can see where some pollinators
have already found a happy home to lay their
eggs!
