Girl Scouts
of Citrus
Alumnae
Hello
Citrus Family and Friends!
I am very excited about this edition of our
Citrus Peel that shines a light on the four
pillars of our Girl Scout program designed
to support our mission to build girls of
courage, confidence, and character who
make the world a better place!
The four program pillars include STEM, the
Outdoors , Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship.
The feedback we are receiving from our
girls on the new badges, and core programs
within each pillar is telling us to keep up
the momentum and build more and more
opportunities for unique and exciting
experiences in these four focus areas.
I have been blessed to get out into the field
quite a bit over the past few months to
meet girls and participate in programming
first hand. I cannot tell you the inspiration
and sheer pride that fills my heart seeing
our girls, their families, and our volunteers
in action bringing our mission to life.
Our mission, promise, and law are far more
than words on a page or something we
recite, they are meant to ignite our souls
and offer us a clear vision and direction
as stewards of our nation’s most precious
natural resource, our children.
Our girls deserve nothing less than the best
that each of us has to give, letting them
lead while gently guiding them to a future
in which they are able to realize their fullest
potential as happy, kind, and productive
women, who lead the way in their own way.
Well, that’s what it’s all about, folks. Thank
you for the passion and resources that you
give to our girls. Our girls are already doing
great things, I cannot wait to see what the
future holds with them leading the way!

STEM with the City
of Orlando Water
Reclamation
Division
The City of Orlando Water Reclamation Division
has been partnering with Girl Scouts of Citrus
since fall 2016. The first program offered by the
Water Reclamation Division was the “Flush to
Finish” fun patch. “We had no idea what to expect
with how many girls would be interested in the
program, but our first program sold out as well
as every other program since” expressed Daniel
Friedline, an Environmental Specialist.
Since Daniel’s mother was a Girl Scout, he was
exposed to many Girl Scout traditions. He grew up
listening to stories of the opportunities she was
able to have because of her involvement in Girl
Scouts. When Daniel was able to be in a position to
run an education program, he immediately thought
of the Girl Scouts.
“I wanted to partner with the Girl Scouts to
help continue providing exciting programs
for girls in just the same way that my mother
had.”
There are two goals in the programs offered
by the Water Reclamation Division. The first is
to educate girls on their environmental impact
and to challenge each girl to be an advocate
in their communities for reducing sanitary
sewer overflows and keeping their surrounding
environment beautiful. The second goal is to
inspire girls to continue their current studies
in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
(S.T.E.M.), which will encourage them to pursue
positions in the S.T.E.M. field that they will love and
can challenge them.
Because of how well the initial program
was received, an additional seven
programs have been added to what
the facility can offer Girl Scouts. These
programs are facilitated by Daniel or
Alyssa Madrid.
The City of Orlando Water Reclamation
Division continues to offer the “Flush to
Finish” fun patch, a “Natural Skin Care”
fun patch, the “Just Wing It” fun patch
and a “Trick or Treatment Spooktacular”
event in October. They currently offer
the Journey to Justice with Sage Award,
Ambassador Water Badge, and maintain
a section in the Citrus Council’s “Earn
Your Lab Coat Badge” program.
Daniel’s Message to Girls
“Girls are underrepresented in not just
Water Reclamation, but other S.T.E.M.
career fields as well.
I want to see women breaking down
the walls and entering these career
fields with the passion, determination
and excitement they brought to every
program they attended as Girl Scouts.”
GIRL SCOUTS OF CITRUS
INVEST IN
GIRLS
At Girl Scouts of Citrus, we believe
that when girls succeed so does
society. We provide girls with a place
to discover their passions, find their
voice and make positive impact in
their communities. These girls are
building a better world for all of us!
GOALS
Help us ensure that every girl
in central Florida develops the
confidence that Girl Scouts nurtures.
An investment in Girl Scouting is
broader than a cause or a cure. It is a
commitment to the next generation
of self-sufficient and extraordinary
women.
TROOP STORIES
RACHEL
SAVES A
LIFE!
Tiffany Handlon woke up early
on the morning of August 14
unable to breathe, feeling as if
her lung had collapsed. Tiffany
has suffered from asthma her
whole life and any number of
environmental triggers could
cause a flair up, but this time
felt different - it was worse.
Tiffany describes what
happened when she woke
up her 10-year old daughter,
Rachel,
“I was in no condition
to drive. I just felt
so uncomfortable.
I couldn’t sit. I
couldn’t stand. I was
sweating.” That’s
when they decided to
call 911.
Rachel has been a Girl Scout
since Kindergarten, and her
mom taught her early in life
what she should do in an
emergency. The Girl Scout
motto is to “Be Prepared” and
Rachel embodied this motto
with every action that morning
as she assessed her mother’s
condition, called 911, stayed
with Tiffany once she became
unconscious, observed
and remembered details of
the incident to report back
later, and answered all the
questions of the emergency
response operator. Later,
nurses hailed Rachel as a hero
for her calm demeanor.
Once Tiffany was in route to
the hospital via ambulance,
the police transported
Rachel to her grandmother’s
house. It took Tiffany’s mom
45 minutes to locate her
daughter, as the ICU was not
yet open for visitors at that
time of the morning. Tiffany
was still unresponsive at the
time and registered as a Jane
Doe. Rachel knew there was
nothing more she could do
now that her mother was in
the care of a professional
health care team, so she went
to school. She was motivated
to focus on school that day
to maintain her impressive
six-year record of perfect
attendance.
Tiffany was in the Intensive
Care Unit for a full day on a
breathing ventilator, where her
children were unable to visit.
After that first day, Rachel
and her little brother were
able to visit their mom in the
hospital for the three days
she stayed, before returning
home. Tiffany’s health is now
stabilized and she’s grateful
for her daughter’s lifesaving
actions. Rachel says her
advice for other girls who
might find themselves in an
emergency situation is “Stay
calm. If you panic, you might
have trouble talking to the
operator.”
In recognition of her heroic
lifesaving actions, Girl Scouts
of Citrus is nominating Rachel
for Girl Scouts of the USA’s
Medal of Honor. The award is
given to a girl who has shown
presence of mind and true
Girl Scout spirit saving life or
attempting to save life without
risk to the candidate’s own
life.
Girl Scouts of Citrus
council’s CEO,
Maryann Barry,
shares “we’re incredibly
proud of Rachel for her
quick thinking, calmness
of mind, and heroic
actions.”
TROOP
TRINITY LUTHERAN TROOPS IN
ROCKLEDGE
Several girls from the Trinity Lutheran Troops in
Rockledge (7011, 7012, 7013, 7014, 7025) braved
the gloomy weather to participate in the Cocoa
Area Trash Bash by cleaning Lee Wenner Park in
Downtown Cocoa on April 12, 2018.
The girls and Troop adults picked up four large
bags of trash, then participated in an Outdoor
Scavenger Hunt, made bird feeders, learned
how long litter lasts in our environment, and
participated in other Earth Day type activities
before heading to the Cocoa Civic Center for
lunch, provided by the City of Cocoa, Keep
Brevard Beautiful and Chick-fil-a.
THE SUPERSTAR DADS OF TROOP 1372
One of our dads, Tony Maddox, has helped us with crafts,
done activities to help the girls achieve badges, and acts as
a driver when needed. He has been a great help to our troop.
Recently, he helped us get one of our troop leaders and 2
of our girls to a bridging event. He had plans that night, but
there was a storm coming and he wanted to make sure everyone
was safe. Before the troop leader could even get the
girls loaded in the van, he hopped in the driver seat and said
he was going to miss men’s group so he could drive them to
and from the meeting because of the bad storm that was
coming. This is just one example of what he has done for the
troop.
Our other dad, Daniel Hart, has helped us pick up cookies
for Cookie Sales, transport our girls, and makes sure the
girls have what they need or goes and gets it at a moment’s
notice. Perfect example was when we went to SeaWorld.
While the girls were inside watching Shamu, we were planing
the trip home and knew the girls would be hungry. While he
was waiting outside for us, he went to McDonald’s and got
food for all the girls that came. When we came out, every girl
had a happy meal and drink while we made our way home.
Both were also ready to roll up their sleeves and help during
the cookie sales. They had no problems helping us get cookies,
pass out cookies to the girls, and help with both sales.
We can’t thank them enough for what they do. They are
great additions to our troop.
SNA GIRL SCOUT BTN EVENT
April Brunner, UCF Daytona Beach SNA
President and Troop 1943 Co-Leader
On April 21st 2018, Girl Scouts in the Volusia
County area were invited to UCF Daytona
Beach for a nursing exploration day. The
event called “Meet the Knights,” was run
by the Student Nurses’ Association of UCF
Daytona Beach and Troop 1943. This four
hour session consisted of presentations from
students and faculty, inspirational videos, an
interactive experience in the nursing lab and
a handwashing experiment. In order to earn
their “nursing exploration badges” each Girl
Scout level had a list of requirements they
had to accomplish. Cadettes, Seniors and
Ambassadors had to finish eight activities,
and Juniors had to finish six. Some of the
activities the girls were exposed to at this
event included:
• learning about different nursing specialties
(ER nurse, pediatric nurse, psychiatric nurse,
etc)
• learning about the women who founded the
field of nursing including Clara Barton and
Florence Nightingale
• learning about the different facilities or
environments a nurse can work in (ex school
nurse, hospital, clinic, etc)
• demonstrating basic nursing skills including how
to use a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, and
thermometer
• demonstrating how to take a pulse
• learning about some of the more advanced
equipment nurses use including IV pumps and
monitors
• identifying different professional nursing
organizations
• differentiating the different educational
requirements for LPN, RN, BSN, MSN and NP
• demonstrating proper handwashing technique
• making a health poster
“Meet the Knights” served as an amazing
experience for both the Student Nurses’
Association and the girls that attended. The
event perfectly engulfed NSNA’s Breakthrough to
Nursing philosophy of exposing young students
of different ethnic and socioeconomic statuses to
the field of nursing. By the end of the day, almost
all of the girls wanted to become a Nurse!!!
STAND BESIDE HER IN
MEMPHIS
The Stand Beside Her movement,
created by our sister Council in Memphis,
Tennessee, was originally presented
to Citrus Council girls and community
leaders at the Women of Distinction event
in November 2017. The purpose of the
movement is to encourage girls to lift other
girls and embrace our differences at all
times. After the November event, there was
a core group of nine girls, who became the
only Stand Beside Her girl committee in
the nation! The Heart of the South Council
heard about us, and well…
This past month, the Stand Beside Her
‘Crew’ (as they have called themselves)
from Citrus Council had the incredible
opportunity to travel to Memphis and meet
up with The Heart of the South Council. The
girls at Citrus Council have been working
together for months, transforming the
Stand Beside Her Movement with other
leaders in the community to incorporate
fun new aspects that go along with earning
the Stand Beside Her patch.
The goal has been to create a more
engaging, interactive movement that
councils and their communities can adopt
and use when helping girls develop into
strong leaders. Specifically, the Crew has
been unfolding a plan of workshops that
uses ideas originated from the Stand Beside
Her Movement, to foster collaboration and
support among young girls and women so
that they have access to the resources they
need to reach their goals.
While in Memphis, our girls did a
tremendous job of representing our Citrus
Council by presenting their plans and
proposals that had been added to and
refined for several months. Members of
the audience included representatives
from FedEx, Kappa Delta Sorority, and the
University of Memphis! Melanie Schild,
CEO of the Heart of the South Council and
the Stand Beside Her Movement, was very
excited and inspired by their ideas and
wants to keep in touch so that we can
continue to grow the movement into an even
greater change.
The Heart of the South was incredibly
welcoming and extremely fun to work with.
The Stand Beside Her Crew interacted with
so many promising leaders at the council
and exploring the rich history of Memphis,
such as the National Civil Rights Museum
and the Memphis Zoo. The days were full of
hard work, interesting activities, and creative
energy that demonstrated just how much
a strong group of leaders could accomplish
when encouraging each other to excel.
Tatiana Serna, a member of the Crew,
stated, “We couldn’t thank everyone
enough for the support and belief
entrusted in us to continue pushing for
greater possibilities.”
Needless to say, The Stand Beside Her Crew
is looking forward to accomplishing bigger
and better things! The hope is to continue to
expand the movement within Citrus Council.
ONE DAISY’S
QUICK
THINKING
27 28
Immediately after our field trip to the police station on
Wednesday, May 16, Alora’s mother, Janice, experienced
a medical emergency. She is 18 weeks pregnant and
had been experiencing lightheadedness and being
over-heated. Following the field trip, she started feeling
worse. As she sat in her car trying to cool down, her
blood sugar and blood pressure dropped and her vision
went out. She told her daughter that she needed help.
Without leaving her mother, she called to me (I was
waiting with the rest of the Scouts to be picked up by
their parents) that she needed help immediately. The
other parent that was with me, Krystal Potrebko (a
registered nurse) rushed to her side, saw her condition,
and told me to call 911. Lake County Fire and Rescue
responded, checked her out and determined she
needed to go to the emergency room immediately.
During all this time, Alora remained calm and
helpful. Janice’s condition was serious and required
hospitalization. The outcome would have been severe
without the immediate assistance by the Daisy Scout.
Her calm, focused response to the emergency reflected
Girl Scout Guidelines: 1) assist victim, 2) call for help, 3)
stay with victim, 4) remain calm, 5) direct rescuers to
victim to help, 6) assist rescuers as needed. Recognition
of this Daisy Scout reflects well upon the girl, her
Leadership, Training, and Girl Scouts USA.
I truly believe this a Daisy who demonstrated
all the I I truly believe this a Daisy who
demonstrated all the qualities of an exemplary
Girl Scout. Second, Janice and the baby are
doing better. Her doctor diagnosed her with
an electrolyte imbalance and she will need to
consume strictly Gatorade and Pedialite for the
rest of her pregnancy.
GIRL SCOUTS OF CITRUS ALUMNAE
Once a Girl Scout, Always a Girl Scout!
29 30
Who are the Girl Scouts
of Citrus Alumnae?
There are many adults who have a strong
connection with Girl Scouts. And of course they
would, this is a great organization that impacts
the lives of so many girls and adults every
day. Maybe they were once Girl Scouts, have
volunteered as a Troop Leader, or been involved
in some other way.
Wouldn’t it be great to relive some of those fun
times? To make friends, go on new and exciting
trips, help in a service project, and maybe go
camping? The Girl Scouts of Citrus Alumnae just
might be what you’ve been looking for.
The Girl Scouts of Citrus Alumnae
(GSC Alumnae) was formed to offer
opportunities for adults to stay involved
with Girl Scouts in fun and meaningful
ways. There are GSC Alumnae events, trips and
service projects taking place throughout the
year. There is no membership fee and current
members come from all walks of life. Members
range in age, experience and gender (men can
be part of the group as well).
This group is comprised of adults (18+) who
at some point in their lives were involved with
Girl Scouts. Whether they were Girl Scouts as
kids, served as volunteers for Girl Scouts, or have
worked directly for Girl Scouts; all are considered
Girl Scouts of Citrus Alumnae.
While the group began with a committee of 31
members in January 2017, the membership grew
to 233. Today the group has grown to just over
300 members and look to reach 500 members
by January 2019.
What to Expect
The GSC Alumnae has a set of dedicated
volunteers on the leadership team who plan
events, service projects and trips for the
group. They work in partnership with a Girl
Scouts of Citrus Liaison to ensure there is
council support as well.
Some of the recent fun events included
a hilarious afternoon of Bunco, a friendly
bowling competition session and a
sophisticated traditional tea party.
The GSC Alumnae also ensure to give
back to their community and Girl Scouts
by getting involved in a series of service
projects throughout the year. These included
helping the Girl Scouts of Citrus Council with
cookie drops, paperwork for product sales,
recruitment events and cleanup efforts at
Council facilities.
For those who enjoy traveling, the GSC
Alumnae offer a variety of trips for every
type of adventurer. There is an annual cruise,
short travel destinations and international
destinations. The GSC Alumnae are currently
planning a trip to Costa Rica in June 2019,
which will include exploring the tropical
paradise, bird-watching hikes and a service
project at a local school; all with a full-time bilingual
guide.
In November, the Annual Alumnae
Weekend Retreat combines fun, workshops
and service opportunities at Mah-Kah-Wee,
with a way to connect with other alumnae.
This event allows members to visit the camp
for a day of activities or to just relax with
friends, new and old, for the entire weekend.
So what are you
waiting for?
Visit the GSC Alumnae website at
Girl Scouts of Citrus Alumnae are
proud to connect with fellow alumnae
while giving back to the Girl Scout
organization they love.
