ANNUAL
REPORT
MARYANN’S INSPIRATION LETTER
We are very pleased to share this
year’s Annual Report edition of
our Citrus Peel! The 2018-2019
Citrus Council business year was a
very active one in growing G.I.R.L.
program and advancing property
improvements.
During this year, we focused heavily
on laying groundwork for the overall
business growth planned for 2020—
not to mention our role in hosting
Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from
across the world at the G.I.R.L. 2020
Convention and National Council
Session!!
I want to thank all of you, especially
our girls. You inspire us daily to hold
our Citrus Family close at heart and
reach for our shared dreams for your
Girl Scout experience. We learn from
our girls every day that we do, in fact,
have the power within each of us to
make the world a better place. To our
adult volunteers and parents, we thank
you for being a part of delivering on
our promise to girls and our mission.
The girls are the heart and you are
the backbone of our Girl Scouts of
Citrus culture and the mission of our
nationwide Movement.
We hope that the pages to follow will
ignite your spirit and make you proud
to be a part of the Citrus Family. As I
am often heard to say, we are ALL Team
Citrus, all working toward the same
goals and mission. Each girl, volunteer,
parent, staff member, and community
partner who blessed us with their time,
talent, and treasure this year has a
share in our Council’s success story.
Thank you and may 2020 be our best
year yet!!

GOING
GLOBAL WITH
MARYANN
5
Travel experiences are one of the
most important opportunities we can
offer a girl to broaden her horizons
and develop her courage, confidence,
and character. I feel this is especially
true of international travel as well as
local experiences shared with girls
from other countries.
Opportunities to participate in
cultures and traditions that vary from
those in our own backyard (wherever
that backyard may be) inspire us to
see the world through fresh eyes and
gain a deeper understanding of this
tiny but vibrant planet we all share.
Think globally—act locally is more
than a catch phrase, for more than
107 years it has been part of our
Girl Scout DNA.
At the age of 17, I lived and went
to school in Tehran, Iran for a
year. It opened my heart and eyes
in unexpected ways, sharpening
my understanding that diversity
is something both powerful and
fragile.
At 21, I chose to live and work in
Germany, adding another lifechanging
positive experience to
my journey. Both of those youthful
travel experiences taught me to
navigate challenges and hone my
communication skills. I believe
these experiences contributed
significantly to who I am today.
To this day, I make creating
opportunities to immerse myself in
other cultures a priority. I especially
seek itineraries that allow me to
meet Girl Scouts and Girl Guides
from across the U.S. and around the
world.
I share this with you as a call to
action. I encourage you to raise
travel as a topic for discussion
when girls are goal setting
and creating their financial
plans. There are innumerable
opportunities of varying
affordability levels, both in the
U.S. and abroad, for our girls
to build upon. Girl Scouting,
through the unique benefits
of the Cookie and Fall Product
Programs, opens the door
for girls of all backgrounds to
create a travel experience goal,
develop their proceed goals,
steward their financial plan, and
ultimately gain the unparalleled
joy and personal growth born
of purposeful travel; not merely
a vacation, but true purposeful
travel.
Through their participation in
Girl Scouts, our girls have the
power to create an experience
of their own design that will
open their hearts and inspire
their minds. Encourage her
to not only think globally and
act locally, but to Go Global in
building her Girl Scout journey.
The world is waiting for her.

A NEW
DECADE
STARTS

Council as CEO
New Year, New Decade … or is it?
Believe it or not, there is a long standing debate about when
an old decade ends and a new one begins. So we at Citrus
Council had to make a decision. Do we want to recognize
2020 as the end of the decade and prepare to go out with
a bang with G.I.R.L. 2020? Or should we kick off the new
decade with the convention and the opening of the Yurt
Village at Mah-Kah-Wee?
Ever diplomatic, we polled members and have come to a
consensus that Girl Scouts of Citrus will be saying goodbye
to 2010s, as a new decade of Girl Scouting is ushered in.

A Year Preparing
for a Stellar Future
In many ways, 2019
was spent laying the
foundation for great
things to come.
The largest girl-led event for girls
and young women is coming to
Orlando. This is our time to shine! In
addition to the conference and Global
Roundtable, pre- and post-conference
trips are available. Make plans now to
attend, registration opens in January.
In the meanwhile, Council is looking
for eager volunteers to help welcome
thousands of visitors to our home.
MAH-KAH-WEE
Thanks to an attorney at Foley
& Lardner, working pro bono on
behalf of Girl Scouts of Citrus, the
fire insurance claim was settled.
Insurance monies, along with funds
provided by generous supporters,
allowed Citrus Council to begin
recovering usage of the west side
of Mah-Kah-Wee. Eagle’s Roost was
refurbished and opened to campers
mid-year. And, the new Yurt Village
at Shady Oaks was unveiled at a
special ribbon-cutting ceremony
that included an introduction of the
glamping tent donated by Walt Disney
World. The unit will be open to its
first campers in February. Plans are
underway to begin conceptualization
of a tree-house unit at Turkey Run and
a boathouse unit on the lake.
The service center has received a bit of
attention with a newly designed reception
area on the second floor, a much-needed new
roof and an exterior paint job – all in time to
welcome visitors during G.I.R.L. 2020.
ENHANCED STEM
PROGRAM AND THE
CRYMES FAMILY STEAM
LEADERSHIP CENTER
The Girl Scout pledge to add 2.5 million girls to the
STEM pipeline by 2025 has been fully embraced
by Citrus Council and local business partners. The
Earn Your Lab Coat program was launched and
the Council program team has ramped up STEM
programs to compliment the introduction of new
badges and journeys. Construction of the STEAM
Center at Mah-Kah-Wee is well underway. Plans are
to open the center to area schools for field trips, in
addition to troop/community use.
RIVERPOINT
Rising sea levels compounded the damage
to the Banana River shoreline which was
washed away by Hurricane Irma. Generous
support from donors has allowed Citrus
Council to initiate restoration of the
shoreline. Work will begin as soon as all
permitting is completed. A new dock will
also be added so girls can once again
experience boating on the river.
12
WOMEN’S HISTORY &
CULTURAL CENTER
For several years, a dedicated group of
alumnae have put together a substantial
collection of Girl Scout memorabilia.
The Lake Mary Museum held a
month-long exhibit in March which
showcased the evolution of Girl Scouts
and included many items from the
collection. In September, Orange County
Commissioners voted to provide a grant
to build the state’s first women’s history
center. Construction is expected to begin
in the next several months.

PARTNER PROFILE:
CENTRAL MOVING & STORAGE
“I can’t say enough
good things about
CMS. They go above
and beyond of what is
expected, said, Debbie
Zito, Girl Scout of Citrus
Director of Products.
“They do not just deliver
our cookies, but they
take ownership of the
process.”
Before that first box of Thin Mints is opened, it
takes a mighty team of volunteers to make sure
the cookie CEO’s are prepared to supply Central
Florida with their yearly fix of Girl Scout Cookies.
For the past three years, Central Moving and
Storage (CMS) has partnered with Girl Scouts of
Citrus (GSC) to produce Mega Drop. A yearly, all
hands-on-deck way to organize and distribute
86,000 cases of cookies to the council’s six
county footprint.
With the help of 275 volunteers, CMS is able to
move empty cars, trucks, and of course a few
moving vans through their facility before packing
them full of cookie at one of the 13 volunteeroperated
commercial sized bays. This closely
choreographed dance is what allows GSC to
distribute all of the cookies in a single day.
CMS is all-in for girls and their passion shows.
During mega drop, CMS will move trailers, take
down fences, remove parking spot cement
blocks, and provide traffic cones. They supply
100% of their staff to volunteer and the
warehouse for cookie safe keeping. All at no
cost to the Girl Scouts of Citrus.
“What started out as a business
relationship four years ago, has turned
into an unexpected friendship. From all
the meetings and phone calls, to the
planning and execution, it takes a team
effort to pull off the Mega Drop.
Our relationship has become a source
of great pride for our company. We look
forward to many more successful years
as a partner with the Girl Scouts of Citrus
Council,” said Jason Fontaine, Operations
Manager at Central Moving & Storage.
Central Moving & Storage has been a staple in
the local community since 1977. This familyowned
and operated business has openly
gained and will continue to support over 12,000
Girl Scout Cookie CEO’s, who will one day be the
business leaders of Central Florida.

“If you like STEM, then you will love EYLC!
It is a really fun program that lets you
do things you wouldn’t normally do. Like
instead of just going to Madame Tussauds
as a tourist, we got to go behind the scenes
to see and learn stuff that the regular public
wouldn’t be able to do.
For me, every field trip and experience was
unique and super fun. You will not regret
signing up for this program!”, expressed
Mareka Pendergrass - a 7th Grade Girl
Scout in Orange County, and one of 31 girls
who participated in the Earn Your Lab Coat
program series.
Look Out World,
there are STEM
Superstars in the
Making!
Earn Your Lab Coat is a program series
created by the Girl Scouts of Citrus Council
Program Team to give young women the
opportunity to explore the fields of STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics). This group of girls receive
unique behind the scenes experiences that
allow them to expand their knowledge on
STEM topics and exclusive opportunities to
inspire them to think outside the box.
2019 was the second year of this program
series in which over 30 Cadette-level Girl
Scouts took part in this unique journey
through the many areas of STEM. Along the
way, many of our local partners offered
their facility and expertise to enhance the
experience. Partners such as the City of
Orlando Water Reclamation Division, MYTEK
LAB, Merlin Entertainments, Orlando Magic,
and I-Drive NASCAR played a vital role in
offering this group of Girl Scouts unique
STEM experiences. The activities ranged from
tours of the Orlando Wetlands complete with
a nearby water testing facility, to building a
robot made from Girl Scout cookie boxes.
Once the girls completed the program series,
they were honored at a special graduation
ceremony where they each received a special
patch to commemorate the journey and a
Girl Scouts branded lab coat to use in their
future STEM endeavors. Earn Your Lab Coat is
back for its third year in 2020. With it, comes
more ways to immerse girls into the various
outlets of STEM. This year’s group will get the
chance to explore careers in technology, food
science, DNA in medicine, and VR coding.

Media Girl Team Recap
At the start of the year, we
had nearly 60 girls apply
to be a Media Girl. While
the original intent was to
take only 30 applicants,
we opened more spots
to include more girls. It’s
hard to say no to girls. The
Media Girl Team would
take part in a variety of
activities and workshops
to hone their skills in the
media industry.
The members of this
group were comprised of
girls from Brevard, Lake,
Orange, Osceola and
Seminole (still looking for
Volusia applicants). These
girls were able to take
part in a range of photo
shoots that included the
Solar Bears, Medieval
Times and Camping World
Stadium. They later took
part in a variety of Girl
Scout videos and voice
overs used in Citrus
phone recordings.
If you have walked into
the Citrus Council Center
recently, you may see a
few of these girls on the
17
renovated décor. You may
have also seen or heard
their voices in some of the
Citrus Council campaigns
throughout the year. These
include the membership
drive, Cookie season, radio
segments, and even the
promotion of G.I.R.L. 2020.
This group of girls have
been able to get a wide
range of hands-on
experience throughout
the year. They’ve worked
behind the camera, in front
of the camera and even on
conceptualizing ideas for
new content. Some have
grown to become very
proficient in media. This
growth has prompted a new
upper level group designed
the challenge the girls
further, known as the Media
Girl Mentor Class.
Girls can apply to become
a Media Girl in September
and the group runs from
October to August. For
more information on the
Media Girls Team, contact
Ncamargo@citrus-gs.org.

REBECCA
Over the summer, Rebecca
spent some time with
Outward Bound Costa Rica.
For the duration of the trip,
she spent her time at their
rainforest base in Costa Rica.
Rebecca spent two weeks on
course with the organization,
learning about Costa Rican
culture on homestays with
local families. She was also
challenged to step out of her
comfort zone to participate
in some adventure. Overall it
was a unique experience for
this Girl Scout.
Troop 602 started the kindness project at their
school. The idea is to promote kindness through
a “kindness tree”. Students would write special
notes on green leaves brought in by the troop.
These notes were made out to friends and
posted on the kindness tree.
Throughout the 2019 school year, Girl
Scouts from Troop 855 at Millenia Gardens
Elementary have been very active. While
working in a meeting with mayoral candidate
Aretha Simmons, the troop also took on
community and project-based activities in
the fall. The troop chose six different Nursing
homes within the US and sent them a “We
Give You A Hand for Serving Heart” as part of
their Community Base Month in September.
In the same month, the girls adopted a
shelter and provided baskets of jeans,
homemade quilts and two baskets for the
You Matter Blessing Bags filled with toiletries.
TROOP 855
In August, Girl Scout Senior Sophia
Fugler attended the Women’s Equality
Day town hall meeting with Florida
House Representative, Anna Eskamani
to learn what actions women
representatives are taking during
their term in office and how to help
accomplish those shared goals.
Now Troop 602 is looking to expand the
project to start a kindness movement in their
community. In the hopes that it will spark
interest in other schools and evolve to include
notes to people in hospitals and volunteers.
WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY
October was Homemaking month, where the
girls made homemade pillows and learned
to sew and crochet. November was Princess
Within month where they learned about selfconfidence,
self-esteem, self-respect and
self-care by taking a yoga class. They capped
off the month with their annual Friendsgiving
Dinner and started December with a special
baking activity.
This event commemorated the 99th
anniversary of the 19th amendment
that gave women the right to vote.
“It’s been an absolute pleasure to run Troop
855” expressed Co-leader Ms. Ford.

GSC
ALUMNAE
2019: A YEAR
IN REVIEW
This past year, the Girl Scouts of Citrus
Alumnae (GSC Alumnae) hosted a
variety of events with something
for everyone. In March, several GSC
Alumnae, along with family and friends,
sailed on the Rivership Barbara-Lee and
cruised along the St. Johns River. The
group also took part in the “Scouting
in America Exhibit” at the Lake Mary
Museum.
In May, the GSC Almunae had a special
event “Celebrating Women’s Fashion,
Bringing History to Life”, presented by
Leigh Anne Brown. Through Brown’s
wedding dress collection and personal
accounts, the audience was taken on a
journey through time, and learned how
women became empowered and free
to live their own lives throughout the
decades.
In July, the GSC Alumnae stepped into
the world of comedy, mystery and
intrigue at Sleuths Mystery Dinner Show.
Bunco was the “The Game of the Year”
and “Sweet Memories” were made at
Farris & Foster Chocolate workshop.
In November, 70 Alumnae members
enjoyed workshops, fun-filled activities
and fellowship at the Alumnae Weekend
Retreat at Mah-Kah-Wee.
PLAY HARD. WORK HARD.
Those were just a few of the fun
entertainment events the GSC
Alumnae took part in. However, the
GSA Alumnae also participated in a
range of service projects throughout
the year. These activities included a
weekly work-day at Riverpoint working
on a different project each week,
painting the yard fence at Pine Castle
Scout House, the “Flags In” at Cape
Canaveral Cemetery for Memorial Day,
labeling 12,000 candy canes for troops
to give out during Holiday Parades.
Some members helped Citrus Council
with completing Fall Product and
Cookie paperwork, prepping PR cookie
bags and baskets, and the occasional
task at Council Center.
TRAVEL AWAITS
In 2020, adventure awaits the GSC
Alumnae with a range of travel
destinations. In March a trip to
Cherokee, North Carolina to work with
the children on the Indian reservation.
A trip to Europe is scheduled for June
2021, but participants need to register
now to secure their spot and attend
planning meetings throughout 2020.
Plans are being finalized for a 3rd
Alumnae Cruise and the dates will be
posted on the GSC Alumnae website.
Our membership continues to grow
with the GSC Alumnae. With the
addition of 165 new members joining,
the GSC Alumnae is 560 members
strong and still growing. We invite you
to be a member of the Alumnae. There
is no cost to join and you will receive
a monthly newsletter with the latest
upcoming events, service projects and
travel opportunities.
Once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout. To
become a member, visit the GSC Alumnae
website at http://alumnaegsc.com/ and
sign up. Membership is free and is open to
all Girl Scouts 18 years and older.
Receive the monthly newsletter, and join in
the fun. We look forward to seeing you at a
GSC Alumnae event, service project or even
a travel adventure.
24 “We have a ton of fun. Volunteering to lead
this program has been a labor of love. It’s
rewarding beyond measure. I put my heart
and soul into making sure that anyone who
comes on board has a phenomenal learning
experience. I love to watch them grow!”
expressed Susie Reale, Citrus Singer Director.
25
The girls have performed live at various
community, sporting or Girl Scouting events
that include SeaWorld, Universal Studios,
Gaylord Palms ICE, the Winter Park Art Festival,
the Festival of Trees and on CBS Sports for
the Cure Bowl. The Citrus Singers will also be
performing at the G.I.R.L. 2020 convention in
October.

THE CITRUS SINGERS CHORUS
The Citrus Singers and families sit eagerly
by their computers and phones, waiting to
finally see the edited video that they’d spent
months rehearsing for, recording in the studio,
mixing, shooting video in multiple locations in
multiple outfits and with multiple takes. The
hope is to receive positive comments and
more views on YouTube than those of parents
and family members.
The latest video, a Girl Scout version of
Pentatonix’s White Winter Hymnal, went live
on November 18, 2019. By the next morning
it had over 1,000 views and was showing up
across the country. Within 48 hours it was
being shared across the world and shot up to
10,000 views!! Paris, Philippines, Argentina,
Australia and it has continued to climb since.
The video is called Girl Scout Hymnal and it’s
following in the footsteps of the other videos
that the girls have made; Savannah, Ooh
Na Na and the highest viewed video with an
amazing 200,000 views in 85 countries, All
About That Badge. The Citrus Singers have
become an international sensation (at least in
the world of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides).
SO, WHO ARE THESE GIRLS? ARE THEY A
TROOP? WHAT IS THIS PROGRAM?
The Citrus Singers are a group of talented
Girl Scouts from many different troops in Citrus
Council. Their mission is to instill confidence
through performance. They travel in from five
different counties to their rehearsal location
in Longwood. The Citrus Singers rehearse on
weekends and perform all over Central Florida
throughout the year.
To join, girls need to be able to sing in pitch,
commit to the rehearsal and performance
schedule (which, really, the parents need
to commit to do) and have an enthusiasm
to perform. Girl Scouts gain experience,
professionalism, new friends, a little fame and an
abundance of confidence not only on stage, but
in their lives. For many of the girls, it is their first
time learning how to use a microphone, how to
carry themselves on stage professionally, how
to be teammates and how to skillfully sing solo
or harmony parts. Others have come into the
program with previous experience and are given
other growth opportunities.

GIRL SCOUT PROMISE
On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
GIRL SCOUT LAW
I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.
