Queridos lectores,
Viviendo desde hace tiempo en el paraíso, la
mejor descripción de lo que nos mueve aquí en
el Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica la da el Sr. Rico
(editor de las páginas web Q): “Había una vez que la
gente solía mudarse a países del primer mundo como
Estados Unidos y Canadá para buscar nuevas oportunidades.
Hoy en día, muchas personas recurren a
lugares como Costa Rica, donde la vida es menos costosa,
el clima es idílico, la gente es amigable, acogedora
y sin prejuicios, y la política está orientada hacia
la sostenibilidad y la igualdad social. Costa Rica es un
destino para personas que buscan más que un modelo
de negocios; buscan causas nobles y formas de retribuir
a su comunidad local. Es fácil sentirse inspirado
por causas humanitarias en un lugar tan diverso como
Costa Ballena.”
Aquí definitivamente nos esforzamos por simplificar
la vida, tener experiencias increíbles, vender sueños
y no productos, y como en el caso mio, convertirme
en narradora en jefe. Aquí la gente se toma su tiempo
y decide qué harán en función al clima. Aunque no es
el estilo de vida de todos, otros muy pronto descubren
que este es un lugar que los motiva, alimenta su
creatividad y ayuda a ponerlos en el lugar correcto,
cuerpo, mente y espíritu, y realizar sus sueños.
En mi caso, vine aquí hace 11 años y he estado trabajando
desde entonces para crear el trabajo de mis
sueños y un estilo de vida que me permitió crear un
medio para conectar personas de diversos orígenes
y promover el Pacífico Sur, atrayendo la atención al
área.
En agosto pasado, Ballena Tales Magazine celebró
su 10 Aniversario con una animada fiesta de música,
sushi y sombreros para nuestros clientes, algunos de
ellos han estado con nosotros desde la primera edición.
El reconocimiento y la gratitud, que mi equipo

As a longtime citizen in paradise I couldn´t have
described better what stirs us here in the South
Pacific of Costa Rica than Mr. Rico (author of Q
media websites): “Once upon a time, people used to
move to first world countries like the USA and Canada
to seek out new opportunities. Today, many people
are turning to places like Costa Rica where living is
less expensive, the climate is idyllic, the people are
friendly, welcoming and non-judgmental, and the
politics are geared towards sustainability and social
equality. Costa Rica is a destination for people who look
for more than a business model; they look for noble
causes and ways to give back to their local community.
It’s easy to be inspired in a place as diverse in caring
causes as the Costa Ballena.”
Here we definitely strive to simplify life, have insanely
great experiences, sell dreams and not products, or as
myself become storytellers-in-chief. People here take
their time and decide on what they will do based on the
weather. Although it is not everybody´s lifestyle, others
very soon find out that this is a place that motivates
them, feeds their creativity, and that it helps put them
in the right place – body, mind, and spirit – and bring
their dreams to life.
In my case, I came here 11 years ago and have been
working ever since in creating my dream job and a
lifestyle that allowed me to create a means to connect
people of diverse backgrounds and to promote the
South Pacific attracting attention to the area.
Last August, Ballena Tales Magazine celebrated its 10
Anniversary with a glorious sushi-music-hat-party for
our clients, some of them have been with us from the
very first edition. The appreciation and gratitude, my
team and I are feeling is the best stimulus for us to
reach farther procuring international recognition of
our destination. ■

Arte rupestre precolombino del Corredor
Biológico Alexander Skutch
Durante el pasado mes de julio la
división de Turismo Rural Comunitario
de la Asociación de Mujeres
del Corredor Biológico Alexander
Skutch, recibió a la arqueóloga Ifigenia
Quintanilla, reconocida por sus investigaciones
sobre las esferas de piedra
precolombinas.
Junto a ella recorrimos sitios especiales
de la comunidad de Santa Elena
donde encontramos arte rupestre
grabado en piedra, principalmente en
grandes rocas ígneas desprendidas
del gran macizo de la cordillera de Talamanca. Los autores
de estas representaciones fueron los antiguos habitantes,
llamados “abubaes”, que tras la conquista española fueron
desplazados por los colonos hacia Boruca y otras comunidades
indígenas al sur de Pérez Zeledón. Para ellos el arte
del grabado en piedra era un proceso lento y laborioso, para
lo cual seleccionaban cuidadosamente la piedra a trabajar,
y preparaban su superficie para así poder detallar con más
precisión con sus rudimentarios cinceles, diferentes motivos
o figuras entre las que destacan las espirales, círculos y
líneas, así como figuras representando formas humanas, de

animales o plantas.
Tan solo en la comunidad de Santa
Elena de General han sido georreferenciadas
más de 70 grandes rocas
ilustradas, asociadas a otros hallazgos
arqueológicos como piezas cerámicas
entre los que se encuentran vasijas y
otros enseres cotidianos, algunos con
más de 2000 años de antigüedad.
Los motivos que les llevaron a realizar
este tipo de expresiones sobre piedra
pudieron ser muy variados, algunos
probablemente cuentan historias
importantes para aquellas sociedades antiguas que debían
perdurar en el tiempo. Su contemplación nos lleva siempre
a numerosos interrogantes, arrastrándonos a un camino que
conecta el pasado con el presente. Es evidente que lo que se
grabó en piedra es un mensaje, para interpretarlo debemos
entender el contexto de su creación siglos atrás, cómo vivieron
aquellas personas y cuáles eran sus inquietudes.
También es importante destacar que aunque estas piezas
sean patrimonio del estado costarricense, se encuentran en
propiedades privadas, por lo que la visita debe ser coordinada.

Pre-Columbian Rock Art at the Alexander Skutch
Biological Corridor
During the month of July, the division of Community Rural Tourism of
the Association of Women of the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor,
received the archeologist Iphigenia Quintanilla, recognized for her
research on pre-Columbian stone spheres.
Near her, we visited special places in the community of Santa Elena where
we found rock art engraved in stone, mainly in large igneous rocks detached
from the great massif of the Talamanca mountain range. The creators of
these representations were the ancient inhabitants, called «abubaes», who
after the Spanish conquest were displaced by the settlers towards Boruca
and other indigenous communities south of Pérez Zeledón. For them the art
of stone engraving was a slow and laborious process, for which they carefully
selected the stone to work, and prepared their surface in order to detail with
more precision with their rudimentary chisels, different motifs or figures among which the spirals, circles and lines, as well as
figures representing human, animal or plant forms.
Only in the community of Santa Elena de General more than 70 large illustrated rocks have been georeferenced. They are
associated with other archaeological finds such as ceramic pieces among which are vessels and other everyday items, some
with more than 2000 years old.
The reasons that led them to make this type of expressions on stone could be very varied, some probably tell important stories
for those ancient societies that should endure over time. His contemplation always leads us to many questions, dragging us to a
path that connects the past with the present. It is evident that what was recorded in stone is a message, to interpret it we must
understand the context of its creation centuries ago, how those people lived and what their concerns were.
It is also important to emphasize that although these pieces are patrimony of the Costa Rican state, they are in private properties,
so the visit must be coordinated. ■

Las nuevas Trincheras en San Isidro Por ~ by Natasha Herrera V.
Trincheras es un proyecto
cultural y artístico independiente
y auto gestionado,
ubicado en el corazón de San
Isidro de El General. Nació en el
año 2012 con la idea de fomentar
el arte, la cultura y los libros,
y apoyar cualquier otra manifestación
histriónica. Al inicio el
proyecto tuvo que ser sostenido
por sus miembros, familiares y
amigos, que creyeron firmemente
en darle al pueblo una alternativa
cultural. Con el creciente apoyo
del público y gracias al esfuerzo
y la constancia, el proyecto
cuenta ahora con un espacio propio
mucho más agradable y cómodo. Es uno de los espacios
favoritos de los artistas y amantes del arte en Pérez Zeledón,
ya que encuentran un refugio para poder expresarse, compartir
y dar a conocer sus trabajos. A lo largo de estos 6 años,
Trincheras ha logrado crear una gama de servicios y actividades
culturales muy variada: libros usados, artesanía local,
eventos musicales, charlas, cine, yoga, exposiciones de arte,
club de lectores, talleres de arte,
idiomas, música, entre otros. También
revivió Ediciones Chirripó, una
pequeña editorial que busca rescatar
la memoria histórica nacional.
El año pasado formó el grupo
Trincheras+Música, una unión de
jóvenes compositores que trabajan
para promover sus trabajos y
que ha impactado a nivel nacional.
Estas son las ideas que el proyecto
busca concretar, ayudar a los distintos
sectores del arte y crear
alianzas. Un valor agregado al nuevo
local es SIEMBRA, un restaurante
completamente vegetariano
que promueve la alimentación saludable
con sus deliciosos platillos y sus talleres mensuales
de cocina y nutrición.

The New Trincheras in San Isidro

Trincheras (trenches) is an independent and self-managed
cultural and artistic project, located in the heart of San
Isidro de El General. It was born in 2012 with the idea of
promoting art, culture and books, and supporting any other
theatrical manifestation. In the beginning the project had to
be sustained by its members, family and friends who firmly
believed in giving the people a cultural alternative. With the
growing support of the public and thanks to the effort and
perseverance, the project now has its own much more pleasant
and comfortable space. It is one of the favorite places for artists
and art lovers in Pérez Zeledón, to express themselves as they
find a refuge, share and publicize their work. Throughout these
6 years, Trincheras has managed to create a very varied range of
services and cultural activities: used books, local crafts, music
events, lectures, cinema, yoga, art exhibitions, club readers,
art workshops, languages, music, among others. Ediciones
Chirripó also revived a small publishing house that seeks to
rescue the national historical memory. Last year they formed
the group Trincheras + Música, a union of young composers who
toil to promote their work and which have been impacted nationally. These are the ideas that the project seeks to concretize,
help the different sectors of art and create alliances. A valuable addition to the new premises is SIEMBRA, a completely
vegetarian restaurant that promotes healthy eating with its delicious dishes and its monthly cooking and nutrition workshops.
We invite you to visit this new Trinchera, located in Barrio Boston in front of the Hotel Nuevo Iguazú, on the main road.

La Feria del Agricultor de Tinamaste,
se une al movimiento libre
de plásticos de un solo uso. Para
lograrlo debemos unir los esfuerzos de
los vendedores y los clientes que visitan
nuestra Feria todos los martes. Poco a
poco, vendedor por vendedor, estamos
en transición hacia la eliminación de los
plásticos de un solo uso. Esto ha sido un
esfuerzo progresivo que iniciamos hace
varios meses, con el fin de sustituir productos
plásticos como pajillas y vasos
desechables por productos hechos de
materiales biodegradables. Así también,
cliente por cliente, hemos invitado
a todas las personas que nos visitan a
traer sus propios contenedores y bolsas
reutilizables para realizar sus compras.
La mayoría de nuestros visitantes traen
sus propias bolsas de tela reutilizables
y por lo tanto se nos facilita la eliminación
de bolsas plásticas. Aquellas personas
que quieran comprar sus bolsas
reutilizables, las pueden conseguir en
la misma feria. Una de nuestras vendedoras,
Mayela, cose bolsas a partir de
sacos de alimento de perro para crear
útiles bolsas de mercado. Ella también
cose bolsas de tela pequeñas que son
útiles para guardar productos delicados
como los tomates o las vainicas.
Estas bolsas son de excelente calidad y
le serán de utilidad por varios años, por
lo tanto son una inversión valiosa que le
ahorrará un gran peso a nuestros océanos
y naturaleza.
No hay excusa válida para defender los
plásticos de un solo uso. Ciertamente
las bolsas plásticas son útiles, por
ejemplo cuando necesitamos cargar alimentos
de forma separada o protegerlos
del contacto con el exterior. Pero
solo debemos abrir los ojos a nuevas alternativas,
para darnos cuenta que para

Join the Movement “Zero Plastic Bags”
The Tinamaste Farmer’s Market is joining the movement
of zero single use plastic. To achieve this we must unite
the efforts of sellers and customers who visit our Market
every Tuesday. Little by little, seller by seller, we are in
transition towards the elimination of single-use plastics. This
has been a progressive effort that we started several months
ago, in order to substitute plastic products such as straws and
disposable cups by products made from compostable materials.
Also, client by client, we have invited all the people who
visit us to bring their own containers and reusable bags to
make their purchases.
Most of our visitors bring their own reusable cloth bags, and
this will facilitate the removal of plastic bags. Those people
who want to buy their reusable bags, can get them at the same
market. One of our vendors, Mayela sews bags from dog food
sacks to create useful market bags. She also sews small

cloth bags that are useful for storing delicate products such
as tomatoes or vanilla. These bags are of excellent quality and
can be used for several years; therefore they are a valuable
investment that alleviates a great weight on our oceans and
nature.
There is no valid excuse to defend single-use plastics. It is
true that plastic bags are useful, for example when we need to
load food separately or protection from contact with the outside.
But we just have to open our eyes to new alternatives,
to realize that to be part of this beautiful movement for the
environment, the first thing we must review are our habits,
and in this case it is as simple as getting our reusable cloth
bags, both large and small, and have them on hand when we
go shopping. The second step is to come to the Tinamaste Fair
and fill them with organic, local and tasty products. ■

Inmovilizadores con colmillos traseros
Las serpientes Colubrid son en su
mayoría serpientes inofensivas,
con una dentición aglomerada, sin
colmillos que producen veneno. Al igual
que las boas y las pitones, los boids,
matan a sus presas por asfixia, pero
algunos incluso parecen tragarse vivos
a la presa. El Colubridae es la familia de
serpientes más grande, incluyendo dos
tercios de todas las especies de serpientes.
Otros miembros de esta familia
tienen colmillos y glándulas venenosas,
pero los colmillos están ubicados
en la parte posterior de la boca, de ahí
el nombre “colmillo trasero” u “opistoglifo”.
Con algunas excepciones, la mayoría de
estas serpientes son ligeramente venenosas,
por ejemplo, los boomslangs
africanos (Dispholidus typus) y los twigsnakes
(especies de Thelotornis), cuyos
venenos pueden provocar la muerte
hemorrágica. En Parque Reptilandia
exhibimos especies de serpientes aglomeradas
y opistoglifos. Las especies
costarricenses no venenosas que se
muestran son: la mica tigre (Spilotes
pullatus), micas pajarera (Phrynonax
Leptophis ahaetulla
Boiga dendrophila
Roel de Plecker
poecilonotus), las boas (Boa imperator) y
los treeboas (especies de Corallus).
Las serpientes con colmillos posteriores
de la colección son, por ejemplo,
la bejuquilla verde de Costa Rica (Oxybelis
fulgidus), la serpiente de mangle
asiática (Boiga dendrophila) y la serpiente
Blandings (Toxicodryas blandingii)
de África. La hermosa serpiente de
manglar usa veneno y constricción para
inmovilizar a su presa. Es la forma más
efectiva de no perder comida cuando se
vive en los árboles. Aquí, en nuestros
jardines en la costa pacífica, es posible
que veas otras serpientes con colmillos
posteriores buscando comida.
La lora falsa (Leptophis ahaetulla) y la
bejuquilla cafe (Oxybelis aeneus) son
cazadores activos del día. Por la noche,
puede tropezar con las serpientes ojos
de gato (especie Leptodeira) y las serpientes
de cabeza roma (Imantodes
cenchoa). Todos matan a sus presas con
veneno que es inyectado por los dos
colmillos estriados en la parte superior
posterior de su boca. Su veneno no representa
ningún peligro para los seres
humanos, importante recordar que una
serpiente nunca muerde si no es molestada.

Rear fanged immobilizers
Colubrid snakes are mostly harmless snakes, having an aglyphous dentition,
lacking fangs that deliver venom. Just like the boas and pythons, the boids,
they kill their prey by suffocation, but some even seem to swallow the prey
alive. The Colubridae is the largest snake family, including two-thirds of all snake
species. Other members of this family do have fangs and venom glands, but the
fangs are positioned at the rear of the mouth, hence the name “rear fanged” or
“opisthoglyph”.
Most of these snakes are mildly venomous, with some exceptions, for example the
African boomslangs (Dispholidus typus) and twigsnakes (Thelotornis species), which
venoms can lead to hemorrhagic death. At Parque Reptilandia we exhibit both
aglyphous and opistoglyphous snake species. Costa Rican non-venomous species
shown are: the tiger ratsnakes (Spilotes pullatus), the birdsnakes (Phrynonax
poecilonotus), the boas (Boa imperator) and treeboas (Corallus species).
Rear fanged snakes in the collection are for example the Costa Rican green vine
snake (Oxybelis fulgidus), the Asian mangrove snake (Boiga dendrophila) and the
Blandings tree snake (Toxicodryas blandingii) from Africa. The beautiful mangrove
snake uses both venom and constriction to immobilize its prey. It is the most
effective way to not loose food when living in the trees. Here in our gardens at the
pacific coast, you might see other rear fanged snakes foraging for food.
The parrot snake (Leptophis ahaetulla) and the brown vine snake (Oxybelis aeneus)
are active day hunters. At night you might stumble on the cat eyed snakes
(Leptodeira species) and blunt headed snakes (Imantodes cenchoa). All kill their
prey with venom which is injected by the two grooved fangs at the upper rear of
their mouth. Their venom poses no danger to us human beings and to remember
a snake never bites if not molested. ■

Parece una estaca y canta
como un perezoso
Poo-oo-oo-oo-oo suena el triste gemido a través de la cálida noche veranera.
Todos dijeron que era un perezoso. A finales de la década de los 80, un ornitólogo
que visitó Hacienda Barú me comentó. “Ese sonido triste proviene del
Pájaro Estaca (Nyctibius griseus)”, me dijo, “uno de los pájaros mejor camuflados
en el mundo”. Caminamos a través de la noche hacia el triste gemido, y un
enorme ojo amarillo que reflejaba la luz de nuestra linterna apareció. “Ahí está
tu perezoso”, sonrió señalando el ojo y el contorno oscuro de un pájaro parecido
a un halcón. Los perezosos de tres dedos a veces emiten un afligido silbido, pero
nadie que lo haya oído lo confundiría con el del pájaro estaca. Muy pocos habían
oído hablar del pájaro estaca que se posa en el extremo de un palo roto y se
confunde tan bien que parece parte del mismo. Es por eso que tan pocos saben
de su existencia. En Hacienda Barú, los visitantes, en ocasiones, han observado
estas aves a través de un telescopio y se negaron a creer que estaban mirando
un pájaro. “No veo nada más que una rama quebrada”, dicen.
El “nido” consiste en un solo huevo equilibrado en el extremo de una rama
rota. Los padres se turnan para incubarlo y luego alimentar a la cría. El polluelo
se posa al lado del adulto y su plumaje blanco y esponjoso contra el fondo
de color marrón claro del adulto, hace que el par sea un poco más visible.
Después de aproximadamente tres semanas, los padres dejan solo al polluelo
en la rama quebrada, pero regresan regularmente con comida. El pichón deja
el nido y sale volando después de otras tres semanas.
El pájaro estaca permanece inmóvil en su posición durante las horas del día y
se activa una vez que se pone el sol. Su presa consiste principalmente de insectos
grandes que captura volando en salidas cortas. ■
It Looks Like a Stick
and Sings Like a Sloth
Poo-oo-oo-oo-oo rings the sorrowful wail through
the warm summer night. Everyone told me it
was a sloth calling. In the late 1980s a visiting
ornithologist enlightened me. “That sorrowful wail comes
from the Common Potoo (Nyctibius griseus)” he told me,
“one of the best camoflaged birds in the world.” We walked
through the night toward the mournful call, and a huge yellow
eye reflecting the light from our flashlight appeared. “There’s
your sloth”, he laughed pointing to the eye and the dark outline of a hawk-like bird. Threetoed
sloths sometimes emit a mournful whistling sound, but no one who’s ever heard it would
mistake it for a potoo. Very few had heard of the bird. The common potoo perches on the end of a
broken stick and blends in so well that it looks like part of the stick. That’s why so few know of its
existence. At Hacienda Barú visitors have, on occasion, observed these birds, zoomed in through
a spotting scope, and refused to believe that they are looking at a bird. “I don’t see anything but a
broken branch”, they say.
The “nest” consists of a single egg balanced on the stubby end of a branch. The parents take turns
incubating it and later feeding the hatchling. The newly hatched chick perches beside the parent, and
its white, fluffy plumage against the light brownish background of the adult makes the pair slightly more
visible. After about three weeks the parents leave the chick alone on the perch, but return regularly with
food. Fledging takes place after another three weeks, and the young bird flies away.
The Common Potoo remains motionless on its perch during the daylight hours, and becomes active once
the sun sets. Its prey consists mostly of large insects which it catches by flying out in short sallies. ■

Adrenalina garantizada
Del 4-11 de noviembre se llevará a cabo el “World
Rafting Championship” en el Río Aluminé en la Patagonia
de Argentina. El Río Aluminé nace en el lago
del mismo nombre y recorre la provincia del Neuquén del
norte al sur, paralelo a la Cordillera de los Andes. El cauce
del Aluminé es estrecho, rodeado de montañas altas, y
tiene violentos rápidos en casi todo su transcurso. Sobre
él se encuentra la pequeña ciudad de Aluminé, que vive del
turismo durante todo el año.
En el campeonato participará el “Costa Rica Rafting Team”
de Quepos. Los integrantes son Jonathan Mora (capitán),
Ronny Mora, Erick Carmona y Roberto R. Mendoza y Jeudy
Umaña Méndez quien es de Dominical. Ellos son tri-campeones
en competencias nacionales y algunos integrantes
del equipo ya participaron en mundiales como en Brasil,
Dubái y Japón. ¡Y ahora Argentina! “Es un honor representar
nuestro país, clasificar y traer muchas medallas a
casa”, dice capitán Jonathan.
Los deportistas a diario trabajan en compañías de turismo
y en cada momento libre entrenan vigorosamente en
los ríos Savegre, Naranjo, Sarapiquí o en el mar; corren y
hacen pesas. Están muy dedicados a su pasión del rafting,
uno de los deportes que mayor sensación de libertad despierta
y qué se ha convertido en una práctica deportiva al
100% en la naturaleza, en la que la adrenalina está garantizada.
El Rafting por primera vez fue incluido en los Juegos Olímpicos
en 1972, (Alemania). A falta de apoyo financiero oficial
en Costa Rica, los integrantes del equipo han conseguido
espontáneo respaldo de empresas locales como Sunset
Surf, Tortilla Flats, Jolly Roger y Ballena Tales Magazine.

Adrenaline Guaranteed
From November 4-11 the “World Rafting Championship”
will be held in the Aluminé River in the Patagonia of Argentina.
The river is born in the lake of the same name
and crosses the Neuquén province from north to south, parallel
to the Andes Mountain Range. The riverbed is narrow, surrounded
by high mountains and has violent rapids in almost its
entire course. Above is the small town of Aluminé, which lives
on tourism throughout the year.
The «Costa Rica Rafting Team» of Quepos will participate in
the championship. The members are Jonathan Mora (captain),
Ronny Mora, Erick Carmona and Roberto R. Mendoza and
Jeudy Umaña Méndez who is from Dominical. They have been
tri-champions in national competitions and some members of
the team have already participated in World Cups like in Brazil,
Dubai and Japan. Now, it’s Argentina! “It’s an honor to represent our country, classify and bring many medals home,” says
Captain Jonathan.
On a daily basis the athletes work with tourism companies. In every free moment they train vigorously in the Savegre, Naranjo,
Sarapiquí rivers or in the ocean; they run and lift weights. They are very dedicated to their passion for rafting, one of the sports
that most awakens freedom and what has become a sport practice 100% outdoors, in which adrenaline is guaranteed.
Rafting for the first time was included in the Olympic Games in 1972 (Germany). In the absence of official financial support in
Costa Rica, the team members have spontaneously been backed up by local companies such as Sunset Surf, Tortilla Flats, Jolly
Roger and Ballena Tales Magazine.

¡Otra gran fiesta por la vida!
Consejo de seguridad en la playa:
¡No tomar licor si va a nadar! El
alcohol afecta su capacidad para
evaluar o reaccionar rápidamente ante
situaciones peligrosas. El océano puede
ser peligroso incluso cuando esta sobrio;
no se ponga a sí mismo ni a otros
en peligro bebiendo alcohol allí.
El 1 de julio de 2018, más de 300 personas
se reunieron una vez más en Roca
Verde para celebrar los logros del programa
de salvavidas local y recaudar
dinero para continuar las operaciones.
Decenas de personas y empresas donaron
su tiempo, trabajo, productos, servicios,
comida, bebida y dinero, ¡lo que
resultó en un recuento final enorme de
donaciones de más de $ 13,000! Esto es
aproximadamente $ 5,000 más de lo que
obtuvimos en 2017, por lo que es seguro
decir que estamos bastante orgullosos
de nuestra comunidad de Costa Ballena.
Un gran ‘GRACIAS’ y ‘GRAN TRABAJO’ a
todos los miembros del comité y voluntarios
que ayudaron a organizar, vender
entradas y bebidas, servir comida
y conseguir los premios de la subasta
silenciosa. ¡Su arduo trabajo y esfuerzo
salva vidas!
$13,000 es aproximadamente la mitad
del presupuesto anual para el programa
Guardavidas Costa Ballena Lifeguards.
La mayor parte de este dinero se utiliza
para pagar los salarios de los 8 guardavidas
certificados en tres playas: Playas
Dominical, Hermosa y Ventanas. El resto
se utiliza para capacitación continua y
certificación, suministros de rescate y

local lifeguard program, and to raise
money to continue operations. Dozens
of individuals and businesses donated
their time, sweat, products, services,
food, booze and money - resulting in
a whopping $13,000+ final donation
tally! This is roughly $5,000 more than
we procured in 2017, so it’s safe to say
that we are quite proud of our Costa
Ballena community.
A huge ‘THANK YOU’ and ‘GREAT JOB’
to all the committee members and
volunteers who helped organize, sell
tickets and drinks, serve food and
wrangle the silent auction prizes. Your hard work and effort saves lives!
$13,000 is roughly half of the annual budget for the Costa Ballena Lifeguard program. The vast majority of this money is used
to pay the salaries of the 8 certified lifeguards on three beaches - Playas Dominical, Hermosa and Ventanas. The remainder is
used for ongoing training and certification, rescue supplies and maintenance of the towers.
Additional parties and events will be planned for the coming months with live music, drink specials and 50/50 cash raffles.
These parties are always a great time… we hope to see you there! Dates and locations will be posted on our Facebook page.

Todo al alcance de unos pocos metros

A
lo largo de mis viajes, he buscado lugares que ofrezcan lo mejor en el estilo
de vida cotidiano. Una buena calidad de vida para mí incluye un ambiente
sano, interacción social, acceso a actividades de ocio, salud y seguridad.
Cuando puedo encontrar que todo esto está en una proximidad cercana, o mejor
aún, dentro de unos cientos de metros, la vida diaria se vuelve más fácil y placentera.
Dominical tiene estos componentes esenciales de la “pura vida”.
La acción en Dominical siempre se ha centrado en la playa. Típico de las ciudades
de surf, la playa es el punto focal y todos los negocios comerciales se alinean en las
carreteras de acceso. Como resultado, la ciudad está más agrupada lo que permite
llegar facilmente a una variedad de opciones de restaurantes y bares para socializar,
tiendas, y spas procurando su bienestar sin la necesidad de transporte.
Lo que hacen a Dominical único de otras ciudades de surf, son las exuberantes
montañas cubiertas de selva divididas por ríos limpios y frescos que abarcan la
zona. Las frecuentes lluvias reponen nuestras fuentes de agua, la jungla bombea
continuamente oxígeno fresco y hay un suministro abundante de productos frescos
que inundan el mercado local de agricultores cada semana.
Dentro de un corto paseo puede nadar y refrescarse en un par de pozas cercanas,

mucho mejor.
Hay muy pocos destinos tropicales en el mundo con olas tan consistentes como
Playa Dominical. Con un entorno saludable, una buena comunidad y todas las comodidades

Dominical - The Good Life - All in a Few Hundred Meters
Throughout my travels I’ve searched for locations capable of providing the best
in day to day life-style. A good quality of living for me includes environmental
cleanliness, social interaction, access to leisure activities and health & safety.
When you can find all of this is a close proximity, or better yet, within a few hundred
meters, your daily life becomes easier and more enjoyable. Dominical has theses
essential components of well living.
The action in Dominical has always been focused around the beach. Typical of surf
towns, the beach is the focal point and all commercial business line the access
roads. As a result the town is more clustered allowing for easy access with a variety
of options from dining, shopping, socializing and wellness without the need
for transportation. What makes Dominical unique from other surf towns are the
lush jungle covered mountains split by clean, cool rivers that encompass the area.
The frequent rains replenish our water sources, the jungle continuously pumps out
fresh oxygen and a bountiful supply of fresh produce that floods the local farmer’s
market each week. Within a short walk you can cool off in a couple nearby swimming
holes, find some shade in the jungle, or spend your day on the beach. Surfing,
kayaking, fishing, soccer, yoga, fitness groups and other versions of recreation are
all at your fingertips. The ocean is warm, the rivers cool, and life on a tropical beach
can’t get much better.
There are very few tropical destinations in the world with waves as consistent as
Playa Dominical. With a healthy environment to back it, a good community and all
the amenities you need within a short walk, Dominical will continue to showcase as
a surf destination with a high quality of living. ■

Y cómo sigue Richie, el perezoso?
En marzo compartimos la historia de
Richie, el perezoso con un sólo brazo y
dos dedos, sobre cómo lo llevaron al
Santuario de Vida Silvestre de Alturas con
heridas causadas por mordidas de un perro.
Como resultado de estas lesiones, tuvo que
amputársele el brazo derecho. Después de
meses de rehabilitación, pudo moverse bien
y decidimos que era candidato para la liberación.
Considerando que nunca hemos liberado
a un amputado antes, pensamos que
era vital monitorear su progreso. Preferimos
hacerlo con un collar de seguimiento VHF para poder observarlo todos los días, registrar sus
actividades y garantizar su progreso en la naturaleza.
Nos complace decir que, a través de donaciones generosas se recaudaron los fondos y se
compró el sistema de seguimiento. Estos collares están hechos para ser colocados de manera
que no impidan los movimientos naturales o interfieran con los comportamientos instintivos.
Después de una cuidadosa observación, de cómo se estaba moviendo con su nuevo
collar, Richie fue liberado el 19 de junio.
Todos los días, el personal y los voluntarios hacen grandes esfuerzos para localizarlo utilizando
el equipo de rastreo. Se marca el árbol en el que se encuentra. Además, se registran
los puntos de GPS, la circunferencia del árbol, el tipo de árbol y la altura a la que es visto.
Hacemos esto para asegurarnos de que está trepando a árboles que son aptos para perezosos,
y que se mantiene lo suficientemente alto para permanecer a salvo. También usaremos
esta información para futuras investigaciones o comparaciones de datos con otros perezosos
que nosotros, u otros, podamos liberar y rastrear.
Los avances obtenidos por Richie son una gran noticia porque se está moviendo bien y de
forma natural. Nuestro plan es darle seguimiento durante seis meses para tener la confianza
de su éxito, luego le quitaremos el collar. ■
Richie the Sloth Follow Up

Richie, the one-armed, two-toed sloth, had his story shared in March about how he
was brought into Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary with bite wounds sustained from a dog
attack. As a result of these injuries, he had to have his right arm amputated. After
months of rehabilitation he was able to move well and we decided that he was a candidate
for release. However, we have never released an amputee before so we thought it was vital
we monitored his progress. We preferred to do it with a VHF tracking collar so we could find
him every day, record his activities and ensure his success in the wild.
We are pleased to say, through generous donations the funds were raised and the tracking
system was bought. These collars are made to be placed in ways that do not hinder natural
movements or interfere with instinctive behaviors. After careful observation, we were
confident in how Richie was moving with his new collar on and he was released on June
19th.
Every day, staff and volunteers go to great measures to locate him by using the tracking
equipment. When found, the tree he is in is marked. In addition, GPS points, the circumference
of the tree, type of tree, and the height he is spotted at, are all recorded. We do this to
ensure he is climbing trees which are suitable for sloths, and that he is staying high enough
to remain safe. We will also use this information for future research or data comparison
with other sloths that we, or others, may potentially release and track. His movements have
been far and high on a regular basis. This is great news because he is moving well and in
natural ways.
Our plan is to follow Richie for six months in order to be confident in his success in the wild.
After this time, we will remove the collar and use it for other animals that we may need to
track in the future. ■

Llegamos alrededor de las 7 pm. Unas comensales disfrutaban
la cena en el restaurante con una gran terraza
abierta, agradable brisa, tenue iluminación y suave
música de fondo. Para los que aún no hayan visitado el recién
abierto Mystic Sushi en Uvita, se sorprenderán al ser saludados
por Rocío Chaverri y Juan José Barrantes (Jota), dueños
del exitoso Sushi Dominical que este año cumplió su 12º aniversario.
“Para estar más cerca de nuestros clientes y agradeciendo
mucho su apoyo durante tanto años, hemos decidido abrir un
segundo restaurante en Uvita, el “Mystic Sushi”, manifestó
Rocío.
El Sushi es de origen japonés basado en arroz que se suele
acompañar con sésamo, trucha, puede estar crudo o ahumado,
adobado con vinagre de arroz, azúcar, sal y otros ingredientes,
como verduras, pescados y mariscos. Es uno de los
más reconocidos platos de la gastronomía japonesa y uno de
los más populares internacionalmente.
“Identificados con el gusto y la abundancia del producto fresco
que se encuentra en el Pacífico Sur adoptamos acompañamientos
típicos con pescados o frutos”, agregó Jota.
Pedimos Sake caliente y una Sapporo fría (cerveza japonesa).
A fondo estudiamos el variado menú con una diversidad de
entradas y Sushis, opciones vegetarianas, sopas y Sashimi. Si
usted está consciente de su línea, un Sashimi es una buena

Degustamos la sopa Miso y la ensalada Ahí Poke donde se
congenia el sushi con el tazón de burrito. Sabores delicados
e ingredientes al diente como pescado y verduras, a veces con
un toque de dulce otros picantes. Seguimos con el sushi, rollos
de anguila y otro plato con rollos Crunchy con camarón
y aguacate tostados en semillas de ajonjolí. ¡Exquisitos el
ambiente, los sabores, la atención, la bebida y la comida! Nos
sentimos muy contentos de haber disfrutado de una exquisita

We arrived around 7 pm. A couple
of diners were enjoying their
meal in the restaurant with a
large open terrace, nice breeze, soft lighting
and relaxing background music.
For those who have not yet visited the recently
opened Mystic Sushi in Uvita, they
will be surprised to be greeted by Rocío
Chaverri and Juan José Barrantes (Jota),
owners of the successful Sushi in Dominical
that this year celebrated its 12th
anniversary.
“To be closer to our customers and very
grateful for their support for so many
years, we decided to open a second restaurant
in Uvita, the Mystic Sushi” said
Rocío.
Sushi is of Japanese origin based on rice
that is usually accompanied with sesame,
trout, it can be raw or smoked, marinated
with rice vinegar, sugar, salt and other
ingredients, such as vegetables, fish, and
seafood. It is one of the most recognized
dishes of Japanese cuisine and one of the
most popular internationally.
“Identified with the taste and abundance
of the fresh produce found in the South
Pacific, we adopt typical accompaniments
with fish or fruits,” added Jota.
We ordered hot Sake and a cold Sapporo
(Japanese beer). In depth, we studied the
ample menu with a variety of appetizers
and Sushi, vegetarian options, soups and
Sashimi. If you have weight issues, Sashimi
is a good choice because it has more
fish and less carbohydrates.
For us the Sushi experience had started:
We tasted the Miso soup and the Ahí Poke
salad which is similar to a burrito bowl.
Delicate flavors and ingredients like fish
and vegetables al dente, sometimes with
a touch of sweet, others spicy… We continued
with sushi, rolls of eel and another
plate with crunchy rolls with shrimp and
avocado toasted in sesame seeds.
The atmosphere is exquisite, the flavors,
the attention, the drink and the food! We
are very happy to have enjoyed a delicious
light and energizing dinner.

bringing Japanese flavors to Uvita. We

Una experiencia Mandala

Michael es fotógrafo profesional y creador de “mandalas”
(que significan ‘círculo’ o ‘rueda’ en sánscrito). Él
nos recomienda: “Contemplar estos diseños geométricos
como la Flor de la Vida para alinear los pensamientos,
la visión y percepción a la perfección”. “La flor da el significado
y origen de toda la información del universo!” En los
ADNs de los seres vivos están reflejadas las espirales que
nunca terminan.
Es descendiente de una familia pionera que vino a habitar la
cima de la montaña con vistas sobre todo el valle de Uvita y
el infinito océano. Algunos miembros de su familia se dedican
a la agricultura, otros son carpinteros y su abuelo fue un
gran topógrafo e ingeniero. Michael desde pequeño tuvo que
colaborar. Su tarea preferida consistía en rastrillar las hojas
secas en el patio de la casa y con toques mágicos lograba resaltar
la belleza de la naturaleza.
A los 24 años despertó su pasión por la fotografía y con su
cámara perpetuó escenas de playas solitarias, atardeceres
mágicos y las estrellas. Durante el festival de Envision logró
capturar la alegría de los participantes.
Llegó el momento cuando sintió que estaba tomando mucho
de la exuberante naturaleza sin devolverle nada a ella. Un
domingo por la mañana encontró un rastrillo roto en la playa
y empezó a hacer círculos, circunferencias y espirales, actividad
que encontró muy satisfactoria. Inspirado en la “Geometria
Sagrada comenzó a diseñar mandalas en la arena

cuando baja la marea. Sintió que sus creaciones efímeras
reflejaban el respeto y el amor que tiene por la madre tierra
(Pachamama).
Michael ha creado más de 300 mandalas con ayuda de su rastrillo
dorado. El oro es su color preferido y la arena para él es
polvo de las estrellas.
¡Celebre una experiencia mandala con él! El dará un toque
espiritual y mágico a sus celebraciones, retiros de yoga y matrimonios.

Michael is a professional photographer and creator of
mandalas (which means “circle” or “wheel” in Sanskrit.)
He recommends us “to Contemplate these
geometrical designs such as the Flower of Life to align our
thoughts, visions and perceptions to perfection”. “The flower
gives the meaning and origin of all the information of the universe”!
The DNAs of living beings are reflected in the neverending
spirals.
He is the descendant of a pioneer family that came to inhabit
a mountain top with views over the Uvita Valley and the
endless ocean. Some members of his family are engaged in
agriculture, others are carpenters and his grandfather was a
land surveyor and engineer. Michael had to collaborate from
a young age. His favorite task was to rake the dry leaves in
the courtyard of the house and with some magical touches he
managed to highlight the beauty of nature.
At age 24, he became passionate with photography, and with
his camera he perpetuated scenes of lonely beaches, magical
sunsets and the stars. During the Envision festival he managed
to capture the joy of the participants.
The moment arrived when he felt that he was taking a lot from
the exuberant Mother Nature without returning anything to
her. One Sunday morning he found a broken rake on the beach
and started making circles, circumferences and spirals, an
activity that he found very interesting. Inspired by “Sacred
Geometry”, he started drawing “mandalas” in the sand at low
tide. He felt that his ephemeral creations reflected the respect
and love he has for Mother Earth (Pachamama.)
Michael has created more than 300 mandalas with the help of
his golden rake. Gold is his favorite color and sand for him is
dust from the stars.

filmed in Costa Rica, they felt a call to come and volunteer at
the Permaculture Farm called Punta Mona. Thinking that they
wouldn’t last a week, they stayed over six weeks. Both have
a lot in common, a huge interest in plants and interestingly,
both of their grandparents owned nurseries. Later on, visiting
a friend in Uvita, they recognized that this was the place they
had dreamt of and 10 years later relocated here.
Overton is passionate about snakes and has created a Facebook
page called “Snake Identification Costa Rica” with over
3,300 members. He has participated in local snake education
programs and distributed handouts, in Spanish and English.
He even does house calls for snake relocation.

Esto es cierto en el caso
de Overton Pratt y Michelle
DiCogno, una pareja de expatriados que
viven en Cinco Ventanas. Después de ver
el show de Discovery “Aventuras Comestibles”,
filmado en Costa Rica, sintieron
su llamado para venir y ser voluntarios
en una Granja de Permacultura, llamada
Punta Mona. Pensaban que no durarían
ni una semana, se quedaron más de seis.
Ambos tienen mucho en común, un gran
interés por las plantas y curiosamente sus abuelos tenían viveros.
Más tarde, visitando a un amigo en Uvita, sintieron que
este era el lugar del cual habían soñado y 10 años más tarde
se mudaron aquí.
Overton es un apasionado de las serpientes y ha creado una
página de Facebook llamada “Identificación de serpientes en
Costa Rica” con más de 3,300 miembros. Ha participado en
programas locales de educación de serpientes y distribuido
folletos, en español e inglés. Incluso atiende llamadas a domicilio
para la reubicación de serpientes.
Michelle se mantiene ocupada transformando
su patio superior en jardines de
hierbas medicinales y culinarias, y la parte
más baja en jardines de plantas y árboles
medicinales, así como árboles frutales,
piña y bananas. Dedica tiempo a preparar
tés de hierbas, brebajes, tinturas, aceites
esenciales, hierbas para secar y plantas de
hierbas para compartir y creó una colección
de más de 100 orquídeas compradas a proveedores
locales. Michelle dice: “He conocido
a algunos de mis mejores amigos a través de las plantas”.
Trabajan voluntariamente en la limpieza de playas, en el Centro
de Apoyo Familiar de Ojochal y después de la gran inundación
del huracán Nate, limpiaron casas y predios. Ambos
ayudan con el “concurso anual de ortografía” y Michelle enseña
inglés una vez a la semana en la Escuela Tortuga. Ella
continúa con las clases de español para mejorar su comunicación
con los lugareños. Les encanta comprar productos
locales en los mercados semanales de agricultores. ■
Michelle keeps busy transforming their upper yard from lawn
to medicinal and culinary herb gardens, and the lower part
into gardens for large medicinal plants, medicinal trees and
fruit trees, pineapple, and banana groupings. She spends
time making herbal teas, concoctions and decoctions, tinctures,
essential oils, drying herbs and splitting herbal plants
to share, and created a collection of over 100 orchids purchased
from local vendors. Michelle says, “I have met some
of my best friends through plants”.
They volunteer with beach cleanups, the Family Support Center
of Ojochal, and after Hurricane Nate’s great flood they
cleaned up fincas and houses. Both help with the annual local
“Spelling Bee” and Michelle tutors English once a week at Escuela
Tortuga. She continues with Spanish lessons to improve
her communication with locals. They love to purchase local
produce at the weekly farmers markets. ■

En la pequeña ciudad costera de Bahía,
disfrutamos de un paisaje impresionante,
atracciones importantes como la
Cola de la Ballena asimismo una vida simple
y encantadora. El aire se llena de cálidas brisas
tropicales, el sonido de los monos aulladores
y una mezcla de idiomas que representan
a lugareños y turistas. Recientemente,
hemos visto con emoción la construcción
de nuestro primer parque infantil, el crecimiento
del Mercado y las mejoras al campo
de fútbol. Con los cambios, hay cosas esenciales
que permanecen consistentes, como
el enfoque en los niños y la familia primero.
Hay un cuidado sincero que parece estar
integrado en la comunidad. Los uniformes
escolares se muestran impecables y una
procesión constante de niños que caminan con sus padres, a
menudo seguidos por el perro de la familia, es algo común.
En términos de educación, Costa Rica figura como uno de los
mejores sistemas escolares en América Central y del Sur y ha
tenido educación gratuita y obligatoria desde 1869. Costa Rica
también afirma tener una tasa de alfabetización de aproximadamente
el 95%. Los residentes se enorgullecen
de la escuela y la comunidad. De acuerdo
con una madre, Angélica Fernández, la
Escuela Flor de Bahía ofrece la oportunidad
para que los niños exploren lugares creativos
como la danza, el canto y el arte. El padre
expatriado Jhordan Canfield, afirma que los
«maestros son calificados que entienden el
plan de estudios y lo más importante cómo
trabajar con niños más allá del plan”. Es la
profesora de inglés Rocío Jiménez Valverde
quien comparte: «Me encanta cuando un niño
está interesado en aprender cosas nuevas”.
Ella explica que los maestros trabajan juntos
para fomentar la participación y alentar a los
estudiantes a explorar sus talentos. Si bien
cada comunidad tiene sus desafíos, se nos
recuerda diariamente la importancia y el significado de las
“pequeñas cosas”. Incluso si nuestros niños no asistieran a la
escuela local, quienes vivimos aquí hemos descubierto que la
exposición cultural, las relaciones comunitarias y la belleza
natural nos permiten experimentar de primera mano la Flor
de Bahía. ■
In the small beach town of Bahia, we enjoy the striking
scenery, major attractions such as the Whale’s Tail alongside
simple living and charm. The air is filled with warm
tropical breezes, the sound of howler monkeys and a blend
of languages representing locals and tourists. Recently, we
have excitedly watched the building of our first playground,
the growth of the Mercado, and upgrades to the football field.
With the changes, there are essential things that remain
consistent, like a focus on children and family first. Pristinely
kept school uniforms and a steady procession of children walking
with their parents, often followed by the family dog, is a
common sight. There is a sincere caring that seems to be embedded
in the community. In terms of education, Costa Rica
is listed as having one of the best schools systems in Central
and South America and has had free and mandatory education
since 1869. Costa Rica also claims a literacy rate of approximately
95%. Residents take pride in the school and community.
According to a parent, Angelica Fernandez, Escuela Flor de
Bahia provides the opportunity for children to explore creative
outlets such as dance, singing and art. Expat parent Jhordan
Canfield, states it is the “qualified teachers who understand
the curriculum and more importantly how to work with children
beyond it.” It is English teacher Rocio Jimenez Valverde
who shares, “I love it when a child is interested in learning
new things.” She explains that the teachers work together to
foster participation and encourage students to explore their
talents. While every community has its challenges, we are
reminded daily of the importance and meaning of the “little
things.” Even if our children do not attend the local school,
those of us who live here have found that the cultural exposure,
community relationships and natural beauty allow us to
experience first-hand the Flower of Bahia. ■

Seguimos vendiendo llantas, pero así también nos encargamos
de servicios de mecánica, mantenimiento
de vehículos nuevos Mazda, Kia, Toyota y Nissan entre
otros; además cambio de aceite, alineamiento con tecnología
3D, scanner y diagnóstico por computadora y preparación
para RTV (Revisión Técnica) son algunos de nuestros principales
servicios.
Hace poco más de 30 años, en un pequeñísimo espacio rentado
en San Isidro, mis padres, con más valentía que dinero
y gran fe, decidieron levantar un negocio que les permitiera
sacar la familia adelante. Fueron años duros, de grandes
retos, muchas dificultades y limitaciones, mas aferrados a
su propósito y el amor por sus hijos, lograron consolidar el
negocio.
Tiempo después, me incorporé y empecé a aprender poco a
poco del negocio, lo cual significó desde barrer hasta entender
los carros y después el manejo del dinero. El tiempo ha pasado,
Dios ha sido bueno y con el tiempo, aquel pequeño proyecto
para vender llantas ha ido creciendo y hoy podemos ofrecer

Sometime later, I joined and began to learn the business
slowly. That meant everything from sweeping to understanding
the cars and handling money. Time has passed and with God’s
blessing, gradually that small project to sell tires grew. Today
we have two service workshops, properly equipped and with a
motive to succeed.
Currently, we celebrate the strength of our great team, the
support of our suppliers and the trust of our customers for
many years.
While striving to provide an excellent service by working with
honesty and truthfulness, it’s understood that we repair cars
while serving people. So, building long-term relationships of
confidence with our customers is a fundamental part of our
vision.
We train employees while renewing equipment, updating

La Historia de Canela
En 2016, la vecina Mona Meier alertó a DAWG que una
perra sin hogar con una camada de cachorros estaba
viviendo en Playa Bahía. Durante más de una semana,
dos voluntarios fueron a la playa todos los días y esperaron
a mamá y sus cachorros. Pronto los cachorros comenzaron
a aparecer tímidamente. Lentamente pudimos alentarlos a
aceptar nuestros alimentos; no sin una lesión menor en la
mano del que intentó alimentarlos.
Mamá Canela apareció unos días más tarde y era aún más
reacia a interactuar con nosotros. Recogimos a los cachorros
y los llevamos a un refugio, pero mamá siguió eludiéndonos.
La primera camada de Canela tenía moquillo y ninguno
sobrevivió.
Continuamos nuestras incursiones en el monte y con frecuencia
vimos a Canela en el vecindario, pero nunca pudimos atraparla.
Seis meses después, los vecinos Karina y Roger, que habían
estado dejando comida para Canela durante meses, llamaron
para decir que venía regularmente a comer, pero que estaba
nuevamente preñada. Poco después, Karina llamó para decir
que Canela había tenido sus cachorros y los había escondido.
Afortunadamente, en un día, Canela comenzó a llevarlos a la
casa de Karina. Finalmente pudimos recoger a toda la familia
y llevarlos a un refugio. Tristemente, su segunda camada
también sucumbió al moquillo. Canela nunca tuvo esta horrible
enfermedad.
Canela’s Tale
In 2016, a friend Mona Meier alerted DAWG that a homeless
dog with a litter of pups was living on Bahia beach. With
help we located the hiding pups. For over a week, two
volunteers went to the beach every day and waited for mom
and her pups. Soon the pups started to appear but were very
shy. Slowly we were able to encourage them to accept food

Tratamos a Canela dos veces por Ehrlichea (enfermedad de
garrapatas) y ella respondió, pero nunca fue una niña muy
feliz.
Este año, los doctores descubrieron un problema serio con su
bazo y se lo quitaron. Después de la cirugía, se convirtió en un
perro feliz, amigable, que menea la cola.
Fue con muchas lágrimas de alegría que los voluntarios vieron
a Canela irse con su familia adoptiva, los Willms. ¡También
adoptaron Fuzzy (ahora Maní)!
Hay cientos de cuentos DAWG como los de Canela. ■

Mom Canela appeared a few days later but was even more
reluctant to interact with us. We gathered up the pups and took
them into shelter but Mom continued to allude us. Canela’s
first litter all had distemper and none survived.
We continued our forays into the bush and frequently saw
Canela in the neighborhood but were never able to catch her.
Six months later neighbors Karina and Roger, who had been
leaving food for Canela for months, called to say that she
was coming regularly to eat, but was again pregnant. Shortly
thereafter Karina called to say that Canela had delivered her
pups but had hidden them. Luckily, within a day, Canela began
to bring them to Karina’s house. Finally we were able to pick
up the whole family and bring them into shelter. Sadly, her
second litter also succumbed to distemper. Canela never had
this horrible disease.
We treated Canela twice for Ehrlichea (tick disease) and she
responded but was never a very happy girl.
This year, the doctors discovered a serious problem with her
spleen and removed it. After the surgery, she turned into a
happy, friendly, tail-wagging dog.
It was with many tears of joy that the volunteers watched
Canela leave with her adopted family, the Willms on June
30th. They also adopted Fuzzy (now Peanut)!
There are over a thousand DAWG tales like Canela’s. ■

Consejos para incrementar el Prana
Tips to increase our Prana
In terms of Yoga, there’s a vital energy that’s inside all living
creatures that keeps us healthy and content, that’s our
Prana. Iyengar and Yogananda (two of the best known yoga
teachers) said that low Prana originates all illness, opening
the door for disease to manifest in a physical, mental or emotional
level. When our prana is good, it eliminates all viruses
and brings good health.
How do we deplete our Prana? Stress, lack of sleep, not eating
well, worrying to much about things that are out of our control
and the lack of exercise and oxygen. Here are a few examples
of how to increase Prana:
Eat healthy by avoiding processed food as much as possible.
Take advantage of the abundance of farmers market. Surround
yourself with people that like you and enjoy your company.
Identify your “happy place” and make an effort to visit
it often, whether it is the beach, mountain or a quiet space in
your house.

En términos del Yoga, existe una energía vital dentro de
cada ser viviente que nos mantiene saludables y plenos,
ese es nuestro Prana. Iyengar y Yogananda (dos de los
profesores de yoga más reconocidos) decían que la enfermedad
se origina cuando nuestro Prana está bajo, abriendo las
puertas a padecimientos que se manifiestan a nivel físico,
mental y emocional. Cuando nuestro Prana es bueno, tenemos
buena salud y nos protege de todos los virus.
¿Cómo agotamos nuestro Prana? Por estrés, falta de sueño,
mal comer, preocuparse mucho por cosas que están fuera de
nuestro control, falta de ejercicio y de oxígeno, etc. Aquí algunos
ejemplos como aumentar nuestro Prana:
Comer sano y evitar comidas
procesadas. Aprovechar
la abundante oferta de ferias
verdes. Rodearse de personas
que disfrutan de nuestra compañía.
Identificar ese lugar
que “nos hace feliz” y visitarle
seguido, ya sea la playa, montaña
o un lugar tranquilo en
nuestro hogar.
Respirar profundo y conscientemente!
Poner atención a
nuestros pensamientos y observar
cuales son funcionales
y cuáles no. Entrenar la mente
para aumentar esos pensamientos
que atraen lo positivo
en nuestras vidas y liberar
aquellos que generan dolor o
sufrimiento innecesario.
A moverse! A bailar, caminar,
correr, nadar, surfear, pintar,
poner nuestra música favorita,
reír, jugar, estar en silencio,
cantar a pulmón, tocar un instrumento; gritar o llorar
cuando sea necesario, orar, contemplar la naturaleza, tener
una conversación a corazón abierto con un amigo cuando lo
ocupemos, ayudar a otros, disfrutar de una copa de vino, ser
amables, practicar generosidad, ser agradecidos, simples,
comer helado sin culpa, no tomar las cosas personales, hacer
yoga. En fin, a mover la energía y permitirnos soltar lo que
necesita irse.
Y sobre todo: Disfrutar de la belleza de ser quienes somos
y hacer un esfuerzo consciente de mantenernos en contacto
con nuestra propia felicidad.
Que el Prana este contigo! Namaste! ■
Breathe deeply and consciously! Pay attention to your
thoughts and observe which ones are helpful. Train your mind
to increase the attitudes that bring a positive outcome in your
life and release the ones that create unnecessary pain and
suffering.
Move! Dance, walk, run, swim, surf, paint, play your favorite
music, laugh, play, be in silence, sing out loud, play an instrument,
scream and cry when you need to, pray, contemplate
nature, have an open hearted conversation with a friend when
you need to, help others, enjoy your cup of wine, be kind, practice
generosity, be grateful, keep it simple, eat that ice cream
without the guilt, try not to take things personally, do some
yoga. Move that energy and allow yourself to release what
needs to go.
And above all: Enjoy the beauty of being who you are and make
a conscious effort stay in touch with your own happiness.

Usted siempre tiene una opción!

Alguien me preguntó el otro día; si tuviera un mensaje
para compartir ¿cuál sería? Mi respuesta fue esta:
siempre tenemos una opción.
Amamos el cambio cuando lo elegimos. Un nuevo corte de
pelo o un cambio de escenario es refrescante e incluso emocionante.
Un nuevo juguete, automóvil u hogar nos da dominio
sobre algo nuevo. Grande o pequeño, elegir hacer un cambio
es una manera de sentir que tenemos el control, avanzar,
mejorar nuestra situación y tal vez nosotros mismos.
Cuando nos vemos obligados a cambiar, sin embargo, es todo
lo contrario. En lugar de sentirse fortalecidos, nos sentimos
empujados, acosados e inseguros. Cuando compré mi primera
casa en Costa Rica, una casita de madera en medio de Ojochal,
estaba eufórico. Era un símbolo de libertad y una nueva
vida que siempre había deseado para mí. Poco después de
mudarme, sin embargo, me di cuenta de que esta nueva vida
Choosing Change
Someone asked me the other day; if I had one message to
share, what would it be? My answer was this: We always
have a choice.
We love change when we choose it. A new haircut or a change
of scenery is fresh and maybe even exciting. A new toy, car
or home gives us domain over something new. Big or small,
choosing to make a change is a way to feel like we are in
control, moving forward, improving our situation and perhaps
ourselves.
When we are forced to change however it’s quite the opposite.
Instead of feeling empowered we feel pushed, harassed, and
unsafe. When I bought my first home in Costa Rica, a little
wooden cottage in the middle of Ojochal, I was elated. It
was a symbol of freedom and a new life I had long wanted
for myself. Soon after I moved in however I realized that this
venía con otras cosas que no dominaba. Como gallos y perros
ladrando toda la noche, no poder encontrar piezas para mi
auto y reglas confusas que requirieron días y semanas para
entenderlas.
Parecía que cuanto más trataba de hacer las cosas más tardaba.
La confusión se convirtió en frustración e incluso enojo.
Lentamente me ajusté. Aprendí a ver las líneas largas no
como tiempo perdido sino más bien como tiempo para respirar
y relajarme. Aprendí a hacer tantas preguntas como fuera
posible cuando no se ofrecía información. Aprendí a hablar
español y descubrí que los demás tienen problemas parecidos.
Eventualmente me di cuenta de que al elegir cambiaron
mis expectativas sobre cómo funciona mi vida, me liberé de
sentirme forzado a hacerlo. Que tuve una elección. Y por supuesto,
todo cambió. ■

roosters and dogs barking all night, the difficulty of finding
parts for my car and confusing rules that took days and weeks
to navigate instead of hours.
It seemed the more I tried to get things done the longer it
took. Confusion became frustration and even anger. Slowly I
adjusted. I learned to see long lines not as time lost but rather
time to breathe and relax. I learned to ask as many questions
as possible when information is not proffered. I learned to
speak Spanish and discovered that everyone else has the
same problems.
Eventually I realized that by choosing to change my
expectations of how my life works, I freed myself from
feeling forced to do it. That I had a choice. And sure enough,
everything changed. ■

¿Mascotas en un Parque Nacional?
La mayoría de las familias tenemos una mascota;
un perro o un gato, o ambos y estos
animalitos se han vuelto parte importante
del núcleo familiar. Como dueños responsables
debemos cuidarlos, amarlos y respetarlos como
seres vivos. Ahora qué pasa cuando irrespetamos
las leyes del país y no valoramos a los demás
seres vivos como la fauna silvestre y las personas
que buscan un lugar para su recreación como un
Parque Nacional.
Según la Constitución Política en su artículo
N°50, todos tenemos derecho a disfrutar de un
ambiente sano y equilibrado, en el artículo N°8
de la Ley del Servicio de Parques Nacionales,
indica la prohibición de introducir animales dentro
de áreas protegidas y en el artículo N°20 del
Reglamento de Uso Público del PNMB, prohíbe el
ingreso de mascotas y animales domésticos.
¿Por qué existe está legislación? Los perros y los
gatos son cazadores por naturaleza y estas interacciones
con la fauna silvestre pueden generar

estrés, heridas y en el peor de los casos la muerte
de animales silvestres; por medio de transmisión
de enfermedades, de las cuales algunas no tienen
cura generando epidemias que afecten a monos,
mapaches, pizotes, entre otros. Las excretas
de los perros tienen bacterias o virus que pueden
transmitir enfermedades que inclusive afectan
a los seres humanos, los perros son presa fácil
para los cocodrilos y caimanes que habitan en
el ecosistema del Parque Nacional. Entre otras
razones los perros pueden presentar comportamientos
impredecibles ante mucha gente y morder
si se sienten amenazados poniendo en peligro
la integridad de personas adultas, jóvenes y
niños.
Los funcionarios del Parque Nacional Marino
Ballena (PNMB) no pueden exponer la salud e
integridad de la vida silvestre y los turistas dentro
de un área protegida. Recordemos que éstas
se crearon en primera instancia para proteger las
especies que habitan ahí y su ecosistema. ■
Pets in a National Park?
Most families have a pet; a dog or a cat, or both and these
animals have become an important part of the family
nucleus. As responsible owners we must take care of
them, love them and respect them as living beings. Now what
happens when we disrespect the laws of the country and do not
value other living beings such as wildlife and people seeking a
place for recreation as in a National Park?
According to the Political Constitution in its article N ° 50, we all
have the right to enjoy a healthy and balanced environment, in
article N ° 8 of the Law of the National Parks Service, it specifies
the prohibition of introducing animals within protected areas
and in Article No. 20 of the Regulation of Public Use of the PNMB
prohibits the entry of pets and domestic animals.
Why is there legislation? Dogs and cats are hunters by nature and
these interactions with wildlife can generate stress, injuries and
in the worst case the death of wild animals. The transmission of
diseases, some of which have no cure, can generate epidemics
that affect monkeys, raccoons, coatis, among others. Dog
excretion has bacteria or viruses that can transmit diseases that
even affect humans. On the other hand, dogs are easy prey for
crocodiles and caimans that inhabit the ecosystem of the National
Park. Among other reasons, dogs can exhibit unpredictable
behaviors before many people and bite if they feel threatened,
endangering the safety of adults, youth and children.
The officials at the National Park Marino Ballena (PNMB) cannot
expose the health and welfare of wildlife and tourists within a
protected area. Remember that these laws were created primarily
to protect the species that live there and their ecosystem. ■

La brillante interpretación del
ensamble “Le Baroque Nomade”
resonó por los aires
del Hotel Cristal Ballena y fue premiado
con un caluroso aplauso por
la audiencia.
Doña Herta y don Waldemar, propietarios
del Hotel Cristal Ballena,
son amantes del arte, especialmente
de la música y durante
muchos años se han celebrado
conciertos en las elegantes instalaciones
del hotel. En agosto pasado
les visitó “Le Baroque Nomade”
de Paris como parte de su gira por Costa Rica, promocionada
por el BAC San José. A través de su música recrearon el ambiente
de la Vieja España y los Nuevos Mundos.
Por unos doscientos años, España fue una de las potencias
del mundo, enriquecida por el oro y las mercancías de sus
conquistas, reinaba en los Países Bajos, partes de Italia y
Francia y en las colonias de ultramar. Eran los tiempos del
absolutismo, los reyes y la iglesia, ávidos de cultura para
crear palacios y templos, eran mecenas del arte y vihuelistas.
En esta época se construyeron palacios como el de Versalles,
Rembrandt creó sus grandes obras, Cervantes escribió sus

compusieron sus obras
maestras. Músicos viajeros como
Fernández y Miguel Mateo de
Dallo de Lana llevaron la música
del siglo XVII al Nuevo Mundo
donde las corrientes renacentistas
se mezclaron con elementos
barrocos.
En los últimos años, el hotel Cristal
Ballena fue galardonado como
uno de los mejores hoteles en
Costa Rica. Studiosus Reisen, una
agencia alemana de viajes de estudios,
inclusive lo calificó como uno de 10 mejores hoteles
del mundo. Condé Nast Traveler, una revista de viajes de lujo
y estilo de vida, invitó a Cristal Ballena por primera vez en
2017 a estar presente en su prestigiosa publicación y así siguen
durante el año en curso. Gracias a la dedicación y duro
trabajo del equipo del hotel, también ostenta 5 hojas a través
de la Certificación para la Sostenibilidad Turística.
Y otra novedad, doña Herta mandó a construir un Templo de

The brilliant interpretation
of the “Baroque Nomade
Ensemble” resounded through
the air of the Cristal Ballena Hotel
and was rewarded with copious
applause by the audience.
Doña Herta and Don Waldemar,
owners of the hotel, are art lovers,
especially of music. For many
years they have hosted concerts in
the hotel's elegant facilities. Last
August “Le Baroque Nomade” from
Paris, sponsored by BAC San José
Bank, visited as part of their Costa
Rica tour. Through their music they
recreated the atmosphere of Old Spain and the New Worlds.
For some two hundred years, Spain was one of the greatest
powers in the world, enriched by gold and merchandise
of its conquests, reigned in the Netherlands, parts of Italy
and France and overseas colonies. Those were the times of
absolutism; kings and the church, eager for culture to create
palaces and temples, were patrons of art and musicians.
At this time, palaces like Versailles were built, Rembrandt
created his paintings, Cervantes wrote his timeless books,
and Bach and Mendelson composed their masterpieces.
Traveling musicians such as
Fernández and Miguel Mateo de

music to the New World where
the Renaissance currents mixed
with Baroque elements.
In recent years, the Cristal
Ballena hotel was awarded the
title of one of the best hotels in
Costa Rica. Studiosus Reisen,

best hotels in the world. Condé
Nast Traveler, a luxury travel
and lifestyle magazine, invited
Cristal Ballena to be present in its prestigious publication for
the first time in 2017 and has continued to do so during this
current year.
Thanks to the dedication and hard work of the hotel team,
it was awarded with 5 leaves through the Certification for
Tourism Sustainability.

Bandera Azul para Ojochal!
La comunidad de Ojochal, una vez más, se enorgulleció
de celebrar “El izamiento de la Bandera
Azul 2017” el 28 de julio de 2018 en la entrada del
pueblo.
La celebración comenzó con el privilegio de presenciar
a los jóvenes miembros de la banda de la Escuela Tortuga,
acompañados por su director y maestros.
Durante el evento presentamos una retrospectiva de
las actividades realizadas en 2017, que nos permitieron
alcanzar una calificación de 100% y 3 estrellas y
presentamos las actividades programadas para 2018.
La celebración culminó con orgullo izando la Bandera
Azul a la entrada de Ojochal. Este es un premio por los
esfuerzos del comité voluntario y los miembros de la
comunidad que trabajan arduamente en la búsqueda
de la conservación y el desarrollo, la protección de los
recursos naturales, la implementación de acciones
para abordar el cambio climático, la mejora de las
condiciones higiénicas sanitarias y la salud pública
para el beneficio de las generaciones presentes y futuras de nuestra comunidad.
El Comité de Bandera Azul desea agradecer a los propietarios de La Mona Grita por organizar el evento en su restaurante.
Además, expresar el agradecimiento a la ADI de Ojochal por proporcionar refrescos y a la Reserva Playa Tortuga por las excelentes
fotos que tomaron de este emocionante evento.
Sobre todo, nos gustaría dar las gracias a todos los miembros de nuestra comunidad, los diferentes grupos organizados que
trabajan juntos para alcanzar los objetivos que este proyecto comunal persigue: un medio ambiente limpio para vivir que

raising of the Blue Flag 2017” on
July 28, 2018 at the entrance of
our village.
The celebration began with the

During the event we presented a

De Ojochal al Cono Sur:
joven emprendedora asume grandes retos
Cuando Paola López Vega escuchaba hablar de la Patagonia,
la Casa de la Moneda y de un lugar llamado Viña
del Mar, jamás imaginó que iba a estar tan cerca de
esos paradisiacos escenarios.
Esta es la historia de una joven de 17 años que asiste al
Liceo Pacífico Sur en Cortés de Osa. Desde el 2016 es una
de las becadas de la generación Soy Cambio-UNESCO de
la Fundación Monge. Ella recibe talleres de “Competencias
del Siglo XXI” con 50 estudiantes de diferentes colegios de
la Zona Sur. También obtuvo una beca de inglés del Centro
Camila Badilla, Paola López, Shanely López - tutor: Juan Diego Jara

Cultural Costarricense Norteamericano. Este año integra la
1a generación de 30 alumnos del Programa del Diploma de
Bachillerato Internacional, asumiendo grandes retos. Aparte
de los días lectivos, debe ir a clases los sábados.
Este programa es diferente al curriculum convencional. Por
ejemplo, en el CAS se trata de ayudar a la comunidad con
diferentes trabajos de servicio. Los chicos de este programa
tienen oportunidades como son las becas en universidades
extranjeras.
A inicios de este año, ella y dos compañeras, Shanely López
Guadamuz (estudiante BI) y Camila Ibarra Badilla (cursa
cuarto año, aspira a BI) se enteraron que había un concurso
a nivel internacional donde los jóvenes entre 15 y 17 años de
Latinoamérica tenían la posibilidad de proponer sus iniciativas
por medio de un video.
Para ello presentaron la propuesta “Manos Amigables con el
Ambiente”. De 706 proyectos se eligieron 17; muy emocionadas
se enteraron de que el suyo era uno de los ganadores.
Así que representarán al país y viajarán en noviembre a Chile
donde recibirán talleres para potenciar sus habilidades.
CONCAUSA es una iniciativa de CEPAL, UNICEF, América Solidaria
en colaboración con Fundación Caserta y el auspicio del
Preuniversitario Pedro de Valdivia, apropiándose de Agenda
2030 de la ONU con sus objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible.
Ellas manifiestan que será un honor viajar a Chile a representar
su colegio, a Osa y a toda Costa Rica. ¡Muchos éxitos! ■
From Ojochal to the Southern Cone:
Young Entrepreneur Takes on Great Challenge
When Paola López Vega heard about Patagonia, the
Casa de la Moneda and a place called Viña del Mar,
she never imagined that she would ever see those
amazing scenarios.
This is the story of a 17-year-old girl who attends the South
Pacific Liceo in Cortés de Osa. Since 2016, she is one of the
scholars of the Soy Cambio-UNESCO generated by the Monge
Foundation. She takes «Proficiency Century XXI» workshops
with 50 students from different schools in the Southern Zone
and also obtained an English scholarship from the Costa
Rican Cultural Center of North America. This year she is
joining the 1st generation of 30 students of the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Program, thus accepting great
challenges. Apart from regular school, she must attend
classes on Saturdays.
This program is different from the conventional curriculum.
For example, the CAS tries to help the community with different
service jobs. Students in this program have opportunities
such as scholarships in foreign universities.
At the beginning of this year, she and two fellow students,
Shanely López Guadamuz (BI student) and Camila Ibarra
Badilla (fourth year, aspiring to BI) learned that there was
an international competition where young people between
15 and 17 years old from Latin America had the possibility to
propose their initiatives through a video.
The girls presented the proposal «Friendly Hands with the
Environment.” Out of 706 projects, 17 were chosen; very
excited they learned that they were one of the winners. So they
will represent the country and travel to Chile in November
where they will receive workshops to enhance their skills.
CONCAUSA is an initiative of ECLAC, UNICEF, América
Solidaria in collaboration with the Caserta Foundation and
the sponsorship of the Pedro de Valdivia Pre-University,
appropriating the UN Agenda 2030 with its Sustainable
Development objectives.
They say that it will be an honor to travel to Chile to represent
their school, Osa and all of Costa Rica. Best of success! ■

El Golfo Dulce y los Delfines

El Golfo Dulce es un pequeño golfo, encerrado por cabos
de tierra. Es un fiordo tropical situado en la costa meridional
de Costa Rica, en aguas del Océano Pacífico. Por
el lado Sur colinda con el Cantón de Osa y por el norte con
Golfito.
Uno de sus habitantes es el delfín manchado (Stenella attenuata)
y otro el nariz de botella (Tursiops truncatus), ambas
son especies oceánicas, sin embargo, el primero prefiere la
parte central más profunda del golfo ya que ahí se encuentran
sus presas (peces voladores y balijús).
En cambio, los delfines nariz de botella se encuentran en la
desembocadura de los ríos donde los sedimentos favorecen
condiciones para que los peces aguja, róbalos y pargos se
puedan procrear.
Para los delfines, el Golfo Dulce es el lugar ideal para la socialización
y el apareamiento.
El Golfo Dulce, hábitat de los delfines, es un fiordo (estuario
o cuenca profunda rodeada por pendientes fuertes y un
umbral en su desembocadura) que restringe el intercambio
del agua en su cuenca interna, favoreciendo la formación de
aguas profundas anóxicas (bajas en oxígeno). Solamente cada
dos años, después de las fuertes lluvias relacionadas con el
fenómeno del Niño, masas de agua salitre de alto contenido
de oxígeno entran al Golfo Dulce.

En el mundo entero solamente existen tres cuencas tropicales
con características similares: el Golfo de Cariaco (Venezuela),
la Bahía Darwin (Ecuador) y la Bahía Kaoe (Indonesia).
El Golfo tiene 50 km de longitud, entre 10 y 15 km de ancho,
una superficie de aproximadamente 680 km2 y una profundidad
máxima de 215 m.
El Golfo Dulce es un ecosistema complejo y único, es de gran
importancia para la conservación. Tiene una inmensa biodiversidad
y principalmente una gran abundancia de delfines,
tiburones, ballenas jorobadas y tortugas.
Usted se maravillará con la soledad de las aguas de este santuario
en donde se puede ver a los delfines nadando cerca de
la embarcación, lo cual es prueba viviente del bienestar de
este lugar que todavía permanece silvestre. ■
Golfo Dulce and the Dolphins
The Golfo Dulce is a small gulf,
enclosed by land ropes. It is a tropical
fjord of Costa Rica located on the
southern coast of the country, in the waters
of the Pacific Ocean. On the south side it
borders the Osa canton and to the north
with Golfito.
One of its inhabitants is the spotted dolphin
(Stenella attenuata) and the bottlenose
dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are oceanic
species; however, the first one prefers the
deep central part of the gulf because it is
the best place to find its prey (flying fish
and balijús).
The bottlenose dolphins can be found at any
river mouth. The sediments promote the
ideal conditions for the needle, snook, and
snapper fish procreation. Golfo Dulce is the
dolphins´ perfect place for socialization
and mating because of the plentiful food.
The dolphins´ habitat, the Golfo Dulce is an inlet (estuary or deep basin surrounded by steep slopes and a threshold near
its mouth) restricting the exchange of water in its inner basin and promoting the formation of deep anoxic waters (low-level
oxygen). Only every two years, after the heavy rains associated with El Niño, salt water with a high content of oxygen finds its
way to Golfo Dulce.
There are only three tropical basins with similar features in the world: the Gulf of Cariaco (Venezuela), Darwin Bay (Ecuador),
and Kaoe Bay (Indonesia).
The Gulf is 50 km long, between 10 and 15 km wide; its surface area is about 680 km2, and it has a maximum depth of 215 m.
Golfo Dulce is a unique and complex ecosystem highly important for conservation. It has an immense biodiversity, especially an
abundance of dolphins, sharks, humpback whales, and turtles.
You will be amazed with the solitude of the waters in this sanctuary where you can watch the dolphins swimming by your boat,
which is a living proof of the well-being of this still unspoiled place. ■

Golfo Dulce, en el sudeste de la costa del
Pacífico de Costa Rica, es hogar de arrecifes
y comunidades de coral que se han
visto afectadas por diferentes factores en las
últimas tres décadas. En un intento reciente por
conservar estos importantes ecosistemas marinos
que están amenazados en todo el mundo,
la jardinería de coral se está convirtiendo en
una herramienta útil para ayudar a restaurar
los corales; esto es como la reforestación en
el océano. Los corales pueden ser dañados por
varios agentes, incluidos los naturales y antropogénicos,
la sedimentación, el aumento de la
temperatura del agua, la contaminación química
y la negligencia en actividades turísticas,
entre otros, pueden conducir a la degradación
del coral. Cuando esto sucede, puede ser difícil
para ellos crecer porque las larvas no pueden
desarrollarse bien en el área circundante o las
algas que habitan en los esqueletos calcáreos
mueren, produciendo blanqueamiento.
En el Golfo Dulce, un proyecto dirigido por el

similar a un fiordo. Mediante la recolección de
fragmentos en La Viuda, Punta Adela y Playa
Valina, tratamos de regenerar cuatro especies
diferentes de corales: Pavona gigantea, Porites
lobata, Psammocora stellata y Pocillopora damicornis;
cuatro de cada diez especies que se
encuentran en Golfo Dulce en arrecifes vivos y
muertos. Cuando alcanzan un cierto tamaño en
el vivero de coral (situado en Bahía Cativo), se
pueden plantar en el área seleccionada. Hasta
ahora, hemos hecho dos plantaciones desde
que el proyecto comenzó hace un año.
El proceso no es fácil ni rápido. Se necesita más
de un año para ver cualquier resultado pequeño,
pero vale la pena. Los arrecifes de coral brindan
muchos servicios ecosistémicos; la industria
del turismo, la pesca local y las fluctuaciones
ecológicas en el mar tienen un impacto significativo
sobre ellos. ¡Los arrecifes saludables son
sinónimos de océanos saludables! ■
Coral Gardening in Golfo Dulce
Golfo Dulce, in the southeastern Pacific
coast of Costa Rica, is home to coral reefs
and communities that have been affected
by different factors in the last three decades. In
a recent attempt to conserve these important
marine ecosystems that are threatened
worldwide, coral gardening is becoming a
useful tool to help restore the corals; this is
like reforestation in the ocean. Corals can
be damaged by several factors, including
natural and anthropogenic, sedimentation,
water temperature rise, chemical pollution
and negligence in touristic activities, among
others, can lead to coral degradation. When
this happens, it can be difficult for them to grow
because the larvae cannot develop well in the
surrounding area or the algae that inhabit the
calcareous skeletons die, producing bleaching.
In Golfo Dulce, a project run by INA (Instituto
Nacional de Apendizaje) with the support of
Playa Cativo Boutique Hotel is working to restore
some of the remaining coral communities in this
fjord-like embayment. By collecting fragments
in La Viuda, Punta Adela, and Playa Valina, we
try to regrow four different species of corals:
Pavona gigantea, Porites lobata, Psammocora
stellata and Pocillopora damicornis; four out of
ten species that are found in Golfo Dulce in both
live and dead reefs. When they reach a certain
size in the coral nursery (situated in Cativo Bay),
they can be out-planted at the selected area. So
far, we have done two out plantings since the
project started a year ago.
The process is not easy nor fast. It takes more
than a year to see any small result, but it is
worth it. Coral reefs provide a lot of ecosystem
services; the tourism industry, local fisheries
and ecological fluctuations in the sea will have a
significant impact. Healthy reefs are synonyms
of healthy oceans! ■

Bahía Drake estrena aeropuerto

La comunidad de Bahía Drake está
estrenando aeropuerto. Y no es
cualquier campo de aterrizaje!
Según personeros de la empresa de
transporte aéreo SANSA, se trata del
tercer mejor aeropuerto del país, precedido
sólo por los aeropuertos internacionales
Daniel Oduber, en Liberia y
Juan Santamaría, en Alajuela.
Aún no está concluida en un 100% y
cuenta con instalaciones aeroportuarias
de primer nivel: una pista de aterrizaje con un pavimento
resistente acorde a las normas del PNC (Pavement Classification
Number), áreas de parqueo, zonas verdes y un edificio
principal que dispone de espaciosas y confortables áreas de
espera, servicios sanitarios, cafetería y tienda. Además, todo
el perímetro está rodeado de una malla de seguridad.
Hay otra obra importante de infraestructura que se está desarrollando
en este momento en la localidad: recién se inició
la construcción del puente sobre el Río Agujas.
Todas estas obras han sido recibidas con alegría por los vecinos
de Bahía Drake, en particular el puente sobre el Río Agujas,
que vendría a solucionar el problema
de acceso terrestre a la comunidad
durante las épocas de lluvia.
Sin embargo, este repentino interés por
desarrollar importantes obras públicas
en la comunidad, no deja de causar
sorpresa y cuestionamientos de los
vecinos. Es curioso que mientras por
una parte se invierten sumas millonarias
en las obras arriba mencionadas,
el desarrollo sostenible de Drake se
encuentra prácticamente paralizado ante la inexistencia de
un plan regulador integral. Ello impide a la Municipalidad
de Osa otorgar concesiones en esta zona. Buena parte de las
construcciones que se han realizado en los últimos años se
encuentran en una situación difusa con relación a la declaratoria
de Patrimonio Nacional del Estado en el litoral. Los
vecinos de Bahía Drake no se oponen al progreso y desean ser
los arquitectos de su modelo de desarrollo. Por ello su interés
es ser tomados en cuenta por las autoridades locales y nacionales
a la hora de establecer políticas de desarrollo, poner en
marcha proyectos y tomar decisiones que les conciernan. ■

Drake Bay has an Airport
The Drake Bay community is premiering its airport, and it
is not just any landing field! According to representatives
of the air transport company SANSA, it is the third best
airport in the country, preceded only by the international
airports Daniel Oduber, in Liberia and Juan Santamaría, in
Alajuela.
It is not yet completely finished. However, it already has
first class airport facilities: a landing strip with a resistant
pavement according to the standards of the PNC (Pavement
Classification Number), parking and green zones, a main
building that has spacious and comfortable waiting areas,
restrooms, a cafeteria and a shop. In addition, the entire
perimeter is surrounded by a security mesh.
At this moment there is another important work of
infrastructure being developed in the locality: the construction
of the bridge over the Agujas River has just started.
All these works have been welcomed with joy by the residents
of Drake Bay, in particular the bridge over the Agujas River,

which would solve the problem of land access to the community
during the rainy season.
However, this sudden interest in developing important public
works in the community does not stop causing surprise
and questions from the neighbors. It is curious that while
on the one hand millionaire sums are invested in the works
mentioned above, the sustainable development of Drake
is practically paralyzed in the absence of a comprehensive
regulatory plan. This prevents the Municipality of Osa from
granting concessions in this area. Much of the construction
that has been made in recent years is in a diffuse situation in
relation to the declaration of National Heritage of the State on
the coast. The residents of Drake Bay do not oppose progress
and want to be the architects of their development model.
For this reason, their interest is to be taken into account by
local and national authorities when establishing development
policies, launching projects and taking decisions that concern
them. ■
