“Hey, Grant, have you seen where we<br />
are?” she asked.<br />
“Yeah, it’s <strong>the</strong> prairie, duh!” Grant said,<br />
never taking his bright blue eyes off <strong>the</strong> video<br />
game screen. “You’ve been asleep forever!”<br />
“It’s a good thing you got some sleep,<br />
Christina,” Papa said from <strong>the</strong> fr<strong>on</strong>t seat.<br />
“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.”<br />
“Speaking of work,” said Mimi, “<strong>the</strong>re’s<br />
<strong>the</strong> sign for Independence city limits<br />
right <strong>the</strong>re!”<br />
Christina watched <strong>the</strong> sign whoosh by<br />
and fade away as <strong>the</strong>y sped down <strong>the</strong> highway.<br />
“What is that?” Grant asked, pointing<br />
off to <strong>the</strong> side of <strong>the</strong> road at a l<strong>on</strong>g line of<br />
giant, white arches covering boxy, wooden<br />
wag<strong>on</strong>s. In <strong>the</strong> fr<strong>on</strong>t of each wag<strong>on</strong> were two<br />
horses attached with harnesses. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>y kicked<br />
at <strong>the</strong> dusty ground with <strong>the</strong>ir rough hooves<br />
and whinnied across <strong>the</strong> quiet prairie.<br />
“That’s a train of prairie scho<strong>on</strong>ers,”<br />
said Mimi.<br />
“Prairie whats?” Grant asked, c<strong>on</strong>fused.<br />
