KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
DIFFERENT JERSEY, SAME OLD RIVALRY
FRONTS TO WEAR PLAID JERSEYS FOR DADS IN MATCH UP WITH PETES
The Frontenacs and Petes are certainly not
strangers to one another. Tonight’s game will
be the 304th meeting between the two East Division
rivals. The jersey Kingston wears, however,
will be a first in the series. The Frontenacs will
sport a ‘plaid for dad’ design in support of the
Canadian Cancer Society. The jersey not only
features the plaid design, but the name of every
player, coach and staff member’s father and both
grandfathers. The jerseys will be auctioned off
with proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society
after the game.
The Petes have surprised many out of the gate
this season. After missing the playoffs last year,
they drafted third overall in the 2018 OHL Priority
Selection. They used that pick to select Will Cuylle,
who did not report to camp and was traded to
the Windsor Spitfires. Without a first round pick, it
was hard to see the Petes improving in the standings
this season. They have improved, however,
with a strong start to the season. The Petes were
tied for third in the Eastern Conference entering
play this weekend. With 9 wins in 16 games to
start the season, the Petes are nearly halfway to
their total of 23 from the 2017-18 season.
The Frontenacs will be missing a key player
from their defensive group for the next few games.
Jake Murray was selected by Hockey Canada to
play for Team Red at the World U-17 Hockey
Challenge. He left earlier this week as the tournament
starts this weekend in New Brunswick.
Kingston has had a lot of success against Peterborough
in this building. In 34 games they
are 18-8-4-4. The Frontenacs have also found
most of their success on Friday nights at home
this season. They are 3-1 in those situations. This
will be just the fifth division game of the season
for Kingston. That will change significantly in November.
8 of Kingston’s 12 games this month are
against East division opponents. KF
The goaltender position is a particularly tough
one to break into in the OHL. With there being
just 40 positions around the league, goalies need
to show patience before getting their shot in the
league. Brendan Bonello is a perfect example of
how to handle that situation.
Bonello is from Mississauga and played his
minor midget year with the Toronto Titans. He was
drafted by the Saginaw Spirit in the 3rd round of
selection in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection to
strengthen their goaltending tandem. The deal
accomplished two things for Kingston. It added to
the goaltending depth making Bonello the backup
to Jeremy Helvig, and put a plan in place for the
2018-19 as far as a starting goalie was concerned.
With Helvig graduating at the end of the 2017-
18 season, the net was Bonello’s for the taking.
The 2018-19 season is the first time Bonello
BILLY KIMMERLY
the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. They decided to
have him play for Toronto in the OJHL as a 16 year
old. He was called up and made 3 appearances
with the Spirit in 2015-16.
The following season he made the Spirit
earning his first full time spot in the OHL. He was
the backup to Evan Cormier, but still appeared in
21 games, playing 1057 minutes.
In 2017-18, Bonello appeared in one game
with Saginaw before being traded to Kingston on
October 30, 2017. Kingston gave up a 6th round
has been given the chance to prove himself as
a starting goalie in the OHL. Along with handling
the responsibilities of being a starting goalie, the
Frontenacs are also asking Brendan to mentor
rookie Ryan Dugas.
Bonello’s NHL rights are unclaimed at this
point, but he hopes to change that this season
now that he has a chance to show what he can
do on a regular basis. He will still be eligible in the
OHL for the 2019-20 season as an overage player.
BILLY KIMMERLY
GET A QUICK START TO A BIG MONTH
The calendar has flipped from October to
November and with that comes a fresh start for
teams. It’s a chance for teams to regroup and start
with a clean record for the month. This month will
be a big one for the Kingston Frontenacs. Even
though it is only November, points are becoming
more important with every passing game. The
Fronts have 12 games in November, 11 of them
are against conference opponents and 8 of them
are against division opponents. As a team on the
outside of the playoff picture, tonight’s game is
the start of a month that they can make up some
ground as they battle for a playoff position.
BATTLE OF THE ROBERTSONS
Usually there is only one Robertson for Kingston
to worry about, and that is the one putting the
puck in the net for the Frontenacs, but tonight
there is one on the opposing team that is a cause
for concern. Nick Robertson, Jason’s brother, is in
his second year with the Peterborough Petes. Due
to an injury, he didn’t play in the season opener
when Kingston made the trip to Peterborough
on September 20th. Nick can be every bit as
dangerous as his brother. While having Jason
score is important to Kingston, shutting down his
brother might be just as important tonight.
COLLECTIVE DEFENSIVE EFFORT
A solid defensive game is the starting point for
most coaching staffs. With Kingston not scoring
at the same rate they were last year, it becomes
even more important this season. Now they will
face the task of having a strong defensive game
without one of their top four d-men. Jake Murray
is playing in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge
and will miss the next few games. Even though it
is only one man out of the lineup, it will take a full
team effort to make up the difference. It will be up
to the forwards to help out on the back check and
the goaltender to be on top of his game.
JERSEYS FOR A GOOD FIGHT
FRONTENACS WEAR PLAID JERSEYS TO BE AUCTIONED FOR HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER
Fans of the Kingston Frontenacs will need to do
a double-take when the team takes to the ice
of Leon’s Centre for the game vs. Peterborough
tonight for the annual Hockey Fights Cancer game.
In support of the Canadian Cancer Society
and presented by Leon’s Kingston, the Kingston
Frontenacs are sporting a different type of black
and gold jersey—adding a plaid pattern—to draw
attention to cancers that affect dads.
Tonight’s game is the eighth consecutive season
the Frontenacs have partnered with the Canadian
Cancer Society to raise funds and awareness, and
this year’s cause hits close to home for the entire
club. The limited-edition jerseys—which will be
auctioned off after the game with the net proceeds
to benefit the Canadian Cancer Society’s programs,
include the first names of the dads
of the players, staff, management,
and owners of the club.
“We have a proud tradition of
supporting cancer causes and
raising awareness for different
types of cancers and focusing on
dads and the cancers they face really hits close to
home,” said Justin Chenier, Executive Director of
Business Operations with the Kingston Frontenacs.
“The obvious cancer for men is prostate cancer,
and in Canada 1 in 7 men will develop prostate
cancer in his lifetime.”
The Canadian Cancer Society is a national
community-based organization of volunteers
whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the
enhancement of the quality of life of people living
with cancer.
“We focus our energies and our efforts on
serving people with all types of cancer, funding lifesaving
research and advocating for cancer patients
and their families across Canada,” said Doug Kane,
Senior Manager, Community, Hastings, Prince
Edward, Frontenac, Lennox &
Addington and The Waterways.
“The Society also does
extensive cancer prevention work
and provides support services to
Ontarians living with the disease.”
