Veritas et Visus Display Standard February 2009
Pioneering Energy Efficient Displays
Tom Shell, Lenovo, Beijing, China
Lenovo is China’s largest and the world’s fourth largest personal computer manufacturer (the latter since its 2005
purchase of IBM’s PC division), after Hewlett-Packard and Dell of the US and Acer of Taiwan. Tom Shell began
by saying that environmental issues are front and center on the world stage. The top 10 environmental issues are:
1. Climate Change
2. Energy
3. Water
4. Biodiversity & Land Use
5. Chemicals Toxics & Heavy Metals
6. Air Pollution
7. Water Management
8. Ozone Layer Depletion
9. Oceans and Fisheries
10. Deforestation
New standards will require more energy
efficient displays, Shell said. He showed a
slide of China’s new monitor energy
efficiency standard (effective November 1st,
2008) and Energy Star Version 5.0 (Draft 2).
He then showed a graph that illustrated that
the shift to larger LCDs has increased
energy consumption (see graph). LCD
energy efficiency can be improved today; he
pointed out and showed a slide to illustrate
that 35% power savings can be made very
simply (see illustration). Shell then went
into some detail on the Chinese Tier 1, 2,
and 3 requirements for LCDs up till 2011
and how Lenovo LCDs meet Energy Star
Version 5.0 and the China Tier 1
requirements now. “Let’s move the display
industry forward together,” he concluded,
“by adopting energy efficient designs
today… encouraging tougher standards, and
innovating to reduce display system level
power.”
