10 | November 15, 2018 | The glenview lantern Election 2018 glenviewlantern.com Glenview well-represented in Springfield, Cook County after midterms Three residents of the Village won their races on Tuesday, Nov. 6 Jason Addy, Editor Following Tuesday’s election, the Village of Glenview will have no shortage of representatives to turn to in Springfield and Cook County. Voters in Glenview played a large role in electing three of their neighbors into office, with more than 23,000 residents casting their votes in the 2018 midterm elections Tuesday, Nov. 6, by mail or at one of the 25 polling places in Glenview. State Rep. Laura Fine, Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz and former Glenview Village Board Trustee Scott Britton all rode the “blue wave” that ushered Democrats into office in previously Republican strongholds throughout Illinois and much of the country. However, unofficial election results from the 36 voting precincts that are fully within the village show that none of the three newly elected officials received a “hometown bump” from Glenview voters. Fine promoted to State Senate Fine, a resident of Glenview since she was a young child, will take the step up from the Illinois House of Representatives to the State Senate after defeating Republican challenger Joan McCarthy Lasonde, of Wilmette. Voters overwhelmingly chose Fine to fill the seat that will be vacated by Sen. Daniel Biss, D-Evanston. After opening up a more than 40-point lead over Lasonde on election night, Fine declared victory and thanked her supporters and family at a watch party in Wildfire in Glenview. “People were asleep at the wheel years ago and we woke up the sleeping giant,” Fine said, adding her campaign team was “tremendous” throughout the long race. Before the race was called, Fine told 22nd Century Media that a victory would would show how people “really appreciate what I’ve been able to accomplish in the House” and want to see more in the State Senate. Fine, a state representative since 2013, is an advocate for public education, healthcare reform and preserving programs for children, seniors, and people living with disabilities. Lasonde, a former marketing executive, previously told 22nd Century Media that her legislative agenda would include balancing the state budget, reducing taxes and ending political corruption. Gong-Gershowitz elected to Illinois House Democrat Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, an immigration lawyer from Glenview, has been elected to the Illinois State House of Representatives, topping Republican Peter Lee, of Wilmette, by 37 percentage points with 69 of 78 precincts reporting. According to unofficial election results from suburban Cook County, Gong- Gershowitz picked up 68.83 percent of the vote in the 17th district of the Illinois House of Representatives, while Lee gained 31.17 percent of the 49,572 votes cast in the race. After claiming victory, Gong-Gershowitz said her campaign was “all about fighting for the values I have fought for my entire life — fairness, equality and justice.” “I am proud and incredibly humbled to represent the community that I love,” Gong-Gershowitz said, adding she feels “tremendous pressure” to do right by her constituents. Gong-Gershowitz said she will fight for affordable health care, public education funding and common sense gun-safety legislation when she gets to Springfield, to make up for a lack of action from lawmakers in Washington, D.C. “States will be front-andcenter in the fight for health care, gun-safety legislation and education funding,” Gong-Gershowitz said. In her acceptance speech at Wildfire Glenview, Gong-Gershowitz said she first thought about launching a campaign for public office the morning after President Donald Trump was elected. “Two years ago, November of 2016, I woke up wondering whether or not we still lived in the same country that shared the same values that I feel are absolutely core to everything we are as Americans,” Gong-Gershowitz said. “I hope that tonight, we are going to send a message loud and clear that we are rejecting the extremism of the last two years and we are going to move forward.” “That means getting to work tomorrow, it means getting to work and fighting for the values that we know make our communities stronger, that we know State Representative-elect Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz (right) smiles while watching election results roll in with her supporters Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Wildfire Glenview. This moment, for me, is our moment to fight back and do better.” In a statement to The Lantern after Gong-Gershowitz’s victory on election night, Lee congratulated her and wished her luck. “Obviously this was a good night for the Democrats,” Lee said. “They were better organized and had more resources. I hope Jennifer will reach across the aisle to really try to fix some of the serious problems facing Illinois.” Britton elected to Cook County board Scott Britton, a former Glenview Village Board Democratic State Senator-elect Laura Fine (center) searches for election results with her campaign staff Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Wildfire Glenview. trustee and Glenview School District 34 board member, won a seat on the Cook County Board of Commissioners. Britton earned just over 54 percent of the vote in his race to unseat Republican Commissioner Gregg Goslin. In total, Britton gained 61,903 votes out of the 114,586 votes cast in the race for the 14th District. Cook County Democrats targeted the 14th district seat held by Goslin, as well as the 15th district seat held by Republican Commissioner Timothy Schneider, to gain an even stronger advantage. When the newly elected officials are seated, Democrats will hold 15 of the 17 seats on the Cook County Board of Commissioners.

Here is a quick look at how Glenview voted in the 2018 midterm elections on Nov. 6. Laura Fine, a threeterm Democratic state representative from Glenview, earned more than 71 percent of the vote in her bid to move up to the State Senate, defeating Republican Joan McCarthy Lasonde by more than 40 percentage points with more than 100,000 votes cast. But Fine did not get any “hometown bump” from her neighbors in the village, according to statistics from the 36 voting precincts that include only Glenview residents. In Glenview, Fine’s margin of victory was only half as large as her overall win. Fine picked up 11,130 votes, while 7,286 voters opted for Lasonde, meaning Fine earned just over 59 percent of the vote and Lasonde earned 38.8 percent. Democratic State Representative-elect Jennifer- Gong-Gershowitz, of Glenview, also saw her margin of victory basically halved in her hometown. Gong- Gershowitz more than doubled Republican Peter Lee’s vote total to earn just under 69 percent of the vote in the 17th state House district. But in Glenview, Gong- Gershowitz earn a tighter, though still significant win.
