Stack won the SWENext Global Innovator Award last month. photo submitted there’s a place for you if you want it.” For Stack, who plans on majoring in biomedical engineering, the conference was also a chance to network with industry leaders and meet college educators, an important opportunity as she starts the second half of her high school career and considers the next step in her education. To apply for the award, she submitted a video explaining her qualifications, as well as a few short essays, and “then I just crossed my fingers and waited.” When she saw the “Congratulations!” email, she “couldn’t stop smiling the whole rest of the day.” According to Stack, past award winners have exceled on robotics teams or formed local community organizations – and she fit that bill. Stack’s organization, Glenview’s Got Steam, strives to “inspire girls to develop confidence in STEAM fields and endeavors” through hands-on workshops covering topics like physics, coding and 3D printing. The meetings usually begin with a short presentation before the girls break into groups to explore the scientific concepts at the core of the lesson. Last year, during an Hour of Code workshop, the attendees met a guest speaker who works in the world of coding before experimenting with Arduino circuit boards. Throughout the evening, they learned to code the devices to make various sounds and digital displays. They even created a greeting card with blinking LED lights. The workshops, open to all Glenview students in grades 5-8, rotate between GBS and the Glenview Public Library so “the girls can see the STEAM opportunities at both meeting places.” “I remember back when I was in middle school Tech Club, I sometimes was the only girl,” Stack said. “While I had a lot of great guy friends, sometimes I missed having a female friend, so I wanted to create a place for other girls who have interest in STEAM and tech to learn some skills and meet one another.” Stack eventually met girls with similar interests in high school – the Glenview’s Got STEAM board includes fellow GBS students Ariya Patel, Caleigh Schmidt, Elizabeth Finley, Ella Prillaman, Jenna Kim and Yasmeen Rafee – but she hopes to use the organization to spread intellectual curiosity to as many wouldbe engineers as possible. “I never thought I would’ve gotten into STEAM when I was younger,” Stack said. “I really loved creative writing – it was my first passion – but mostly because I didn’t know that with technology and math and science and engineering, you have a lot of room to be creative, and that’s so important to explain to these girls at a young age.” For more information about the organization, visit glenviewsgot steam.weebly.com.
