Election 2018
Morrison defeats Davie in District 29 campaign ‘lacking civility’
Contributing Editor
Incumbent Julie A. Morrison
(D-Deerfield) celebrated
another successful
defense of her Senate seat
in the state’s 29th Senate
District over Barrett Davie
(R-Lake Forest) at the
Highland Park Country
Club.
Morrison, 62, won 63.1
percent of the vote to Davie’s
36.9 percent, with 62
of 68 precincts reported, a
difference of 20,762 votes.
The district covers Highland
Park, Highwood,
Lake Bluff, Lake Forest,
Buffalo Grove and Deerfield
in Lake County, and
Arlington Heights, Glencoe,
Prospect Heights
and Northbrook in Cook
County.
The race marked the
first meeting of Morrison
and Davie. Morrison has
served as senator in the
29th Legislative District
since 2013. She previously
served as the West Deerfield
Township Supervisor
for 15 years.
Davie, 44, a first-time
candidate, co-founded a
sports marketing company
InStadium, and served as
its CEO until 2008. He
now serves as the partner
and co-founder of In-
Flow Partners, a business
accelerator. He has also
previously served as the
chairman of Bernie’s Book
Bank in Lake Bluff, and
was a board member at the
Gorton Community Center
in Lake Forest.
“It was a really hard
race, you guys” Morrison
said to a crowded room at
the Highland Park Country
Club. “There was a lot
of nastiness, there was not
a lot of civility. We didn’t
get to talk the issues and
policy that I think this district
expects. I am going to
take this win to Springfield
and work even harder than
I have before.”
Morrison noted the
toughness of the race, and
was happy to no longer
have to worry about campaigning.
“I’m delighted the campaign
is over and just so
happy to be re-elected,”
after delivering a victory
speech.
Davie, her challenger,
addressed the crowd at
Chief’s Pub in Lake Forest
after conceding to Morrison.
“We started this campaign
talking about the
idea that is starts right here,
which means it starts with
me,” Davie said to a large
crowd at the pub. “And
then it starts with all of
you, and it starts with everybody
who contributed,
participated, who took a
chance on this belief that
we had that we could make
a difference. We said it was
about action, inclusion and
accountability that we were
going take action and that
we were going to move,
and we did that. And we
were going to bring people
together.”
“We didn’t win this evening,
but we ran an incredible
campaign, we ran a
hell of a campaign,” he
continued.
Davie attributed part of
his loss to voters frustrations
on a federal level
with the Republican party.
“There has never been a
state senate campaign like
this in the state of Illinois,”
Davie said. “... If we didn’t
have some of the national
headwinds we had here, we
would have kicked our opponent’s
[butt].”
Despite his loss, Davie
said he is committed to
staying involved politically
during his speech.
“I’ve learned we have
a lot of challenges,” Davie
said. “I am committed
now more than ever to fixing
those challenges. I am
a bit of a dog with a bone
and I am going to get up
tomorrow morning and I
am going to keep going.
This state is an incredible
place.”
Both candidates received
more than $800,000 in
campaign donations. Morrison’s
largest donation of
$361,039.03 came from the
Senate Democratic Victory
Fund, while Davie’s largest
donation of $308,785.83
came from the Illinois Republican
Party.
In her third term serving
the state’s 29th Legislative
District, Morrison said she
hopes to continue to work
on human service issues,
including gun violence.
“I’m hoping to continue
to work on the human
services issues that I’ve
worked on previously, especially
the problems with
[the Department of Children
and Family Services],”
Morrison said. “And
I am resolved to continue
working on gun violence,
especially an assault weapon
ban.”
podium and gave the audience
tools to achieve success.
He started by sharing a
story about a time he was
in Virginia and was preparing
a presentation for
senior military members
on a weapons program he
was working on. Right before
his presentation he was
making last minute changes,
and as he was moving
his standing desk down so
he could sit, he ripped out
all the cords and the screen
went black.
“I felt more stressed in
that moment than I did six
months prior when people
were actually shooting at
me and my life was actually
in danger,” Drum said.
He noted that it does not
matter if you are a Navy
SEAL or a first-time project
manager, it is in high
stakes moments when it
is important to perform at
your best.
Drum provided a series
of tools to the audience on
how to achieve and measure
success, and how to
cope when things don’t go
as planned.
He said it starts with asking
ourselves how invested
we are in our organization
and our tasks?
Some of the tools he provided
were:
• Putting missions above
your own needs
• Being engaged and focused
on the objective
• Practicing mindfulness
• Setting goals
• Visualizing a contingency
plan
• Self-talk
