In 1851, James Anderson
left Aberdeenshire,
Scotland. He secured a
job clearing land in Lake
Forest in exchange for
the small house built by
Sylvester Lind (a fellow
Scotsman who would
later serve as Lake Forest
mayor).
In 1871, nephew George
Findlay arrived in Lake
Forest and six years
later James and George
imported four cows and
one bull; the first registered
Angus herd in the US. The
herd was first kept in Lake
Forest near present day
CVS. The Anderson-Findlay
operation later supplied
cattle to the XIT ranch in
Texas which stretched over
3 million acres. George
Findlay became manager
of XIT in 1888.
James Anderson ran
a general store in town
where he employed many
newly arrived Scots.
Anderson later built the
large red brick commercial
building which sits on the
corner of Western Avenue
and Deerpath. Today,
Walgreens occupies the
first floor of the Anderson
Building.
Son’s Joseph and
George Anderson served
on the first Lake Forest
Fire department along
with 4 other Scots. George
had married Scots born
Mary Ellen Simpson
whose family farmed in
the area. James Anderson
Jr. helped survey much of
Lake Forest. More than 12
years later, Anderson and
Company Engineers is still
in business.
George Findlay returned
to Lake Forest
from Texas, and in 1903
opened Lake Forest’s first
bank in a small building
on Deerpath. George was
President, and the majority
of the officers were Scots,
including two Findlay’s,
an Anderson and a Steele.
In 1907 Lake Forest saw
its second bank open with
George Anderson as vice
president. In 1915 the two
banks merged and moved
to a new building on Market
Square. As a result, the
street in front was renamed
Bank Lane.
Grandson Stanley
Anderson designed dozens
of homes and buildings in
the area. Notable among
them are Lake Forest
High School, Lake Forest
Hospital and many of the
buildings which today
form downtown Lake Forest.
Stanley also designed
a house on King Muir
Road which was patterned
after Greywalls, a hotel on
Muirfield Golf Course in
Scotland.
