NORTH HARBOUR EVENT REPORT Events are created and offered to players of all levels at North Harbour. We pride ourselves on providing a diverse range of competitions for all ages and abilities. The 2018 Barfoot & Thompson New Zealand Badminton Open was under a new naming right sponsor this year. The event was held from 1-6 May at the North Shore Events Centre. This HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament showcased the highest ranked players in the history of the event, including high-profile former World Champion, Lin Dan. North Harbour was once again the official training venue for this tournament. Julie Carrel – Event Director, and her team created an extraordinary event that was enjoyed by many including players, public and volunteers. Having Lin Dan as a drawcard for the event saw record numbers attend the sessions and watch through Sky TV. Badminton North Harbour 2018 Events: Yonex North Harbour International North Harbour Open North Harbour u19 Open North Harbour u15 Open Northern Region u13/u15 Boys Local Derby NZCT Senior Secondary School League NZCT Junior Secondary School League NZCT Intermediate School League Shuttletime Primary School Team Challenge Shuttletime Intermediate School Zone Day North Harbour Interclub Summer League Senior Closed Championships Singles, Doubles & Mixed Doubles Senior Ladder North Harbour International 2018 This was the first International North Harbour has hosted in a number of years. Being scheduled so early in the year, the number of entries was very positive with 131 players registered. This BWF Future Series Event had a prize pool of $USD5,000.00 and an entry fee of $NZD100.00. Players from 10 countries were represented at this four-day event. Trophies were supplied by Barclay Engravers and were of a very high quality. On finals day, North Harbour, in conjunction with Oceania Badminton, organised the Spit Roast Company to provide hot roast rolls and salad to all players, followed by ice creams before everyone headed away. Our thanks go to our volunteers who make the event such a successful one. North Island/North Harbour Open 2018 This tournament from 20-22 April was attended by 70 players. Perpetual trophies representing the North Island part of the event were awarded alongside North Harbour’s trophies plus individual trophies were presented to the winners and runners up. Thank you to Badminton North Harbour staff and our very own volunteers for their time and experience in producing a successful event. North Harbour u19 Open The North Harbour u19 Open was held from 11-12 August and hosted 53 players from around the Northern Region and beyond. The standard of badminton was very high during this event with finals being the exciting contest that it promised to be. North Harbour players were very dominant with Oscar Guo winning the men’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles with fellow North Harbour player, Tamara Otene. Shaunna Li won the women’s singles. 10
NORTH HARBOUR EVENT REPORT North Harbour u15 Open The North Island/North Harbour u15 Open was held from 7-8 June. The draw of 84 players was played over two days with winners and runners up receiving medals and prize money. Plate winners also received medals. North Harbour’s Chris Benzie won the boys doubles and mixed doubles with partner Natasha Alijabar, who also won the girls doubles. Northern Region Local Derby – u13/u15 Boys Section North Harbour was the host association for the u13/u15 boys section of Local Derby held over Queens Birthday weekend from 2-3 June. Three associations within the Northern Region area entered a total of 4 teams. This competition was held over two days in one division. The finals places were: 1 st : Auckland 1 2 nd : North Harbour 3 rd : Waitakere 4 th : Auckland 2 Shuttletime Primary School Team Challenge 2018 The 2018 Primary Schools team event was held on Thursday 24 May and hosted 17 teams, an increase from 2017. The winning team for 2018 was Campbells Bay 1 with Kristin 1 runners up. The winning team were awarded the North Harbour Primary Schools Team Challenge Trophy and each team member of both teams received an individual trophy. In section 2, Kristin 2 were the winning team with Campbells Bay 1 coming second. Both teams received medals for each team member. This is a great way for schools that have had our Development Officer attend their school delivering the Shuttle Time programme to continue developing the skills that the children have learnt. Many children from this day’s play continue playing badminton at our school holiday programs, junior clubs and in North Harbour junior representative teams.
