CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REPORT
Welcome to our 2018 annual report. It has been another busy
year with more people playing and enjoying our sport.
2018 has seen a continuation of successes, both on and off
the court. Strong bookings have seen our venues at Bond
Crescent and Apollo Drive under pressure to accommodate
the ever-increasing demand from our community to play badminton.
Strong club membership alongside card holders and
the community’s casual players have seen record numbers
through these facilities, participating in tournaments, representative
teams and domestic competitions.
Badminton North Harbour would like to welcome our new
naming right sponsor and partner, Harcourts Cooper & Co.
We have entered into a fantastic agreement with one of
North Shore’s leading community supporters. Harcourts
Cooper & Co is a proactive community based real estate company
whose presence in our community is second to none.
They are at the forefront of North Harbour sport and contribute
to a vast amount of community sporting organisations.
We are really excited to have Badminton North Harbour associated
with them. I would like to thank Martin, Rosie and the
Harcourts Cooper & Co team for all their support and look
forward to a great relationship moving ahead.
Once again, we have had a strong year with results and a
number of firsts. A number of North Harbour players were
selected to represent New Zealand in various age groups and
senior international tournaments. Abhinav Manota, Oscar
Guo, Edward Lau, Dylan Soedjasa and Maika Phillips represented
New Zealand in the Victor Oceania Men’s Team Championships,
while Anona Pak, Gaea Galvez and Justine Villegas
represented New Zealand in the Victor Oceania Women’s
Team Championships. Abhinav also represented New Zealand
at the World Championships held in China in August and Oscar
represented New Zealand at the Youth Olympic Games
held in Argentina in October. Oscar Guo, Shaunna Li and Edward
Lau have also travelled to Canada as part of the New
Zealand junior team to compete at the World Junior Championships.
Our players once again achieved great success at National
Championships with Harbour winning the singles, men’s doubles,
women’s doubles and mixed doubles titles. Oscar Guo
achieved a triple crown at the Yonex New Zealand u19 Championships
while Shaunna Li won the girls singles at 15 years of
age. Our representative teams once again had an enjoyable
season. Our Division 1 team featured on Sky TV and finished
second at the Yonex Division 1 & 2 Championships. Our Division
3 team won their national competition and Division 4
won their North Island competition. Our Masters 1 and 5
teams won their North Island competitions and the North
Harbour u19 team took out first place at the Yonex Team
Championships.
passion to our association and sport keeps delivering domestic,
national and international competitions to a high
level of excellence. Annabelle Galvez, our Secretary, tirelessly
commits to ensuring our office and its administration runs
smoothly. Karen Willins, our Accounts Manager and longest
serving Harbour staff member with over 25 years with the
association, keeps all the books balanced and in order, enabling
us to be most efficient and on track. Justine Villegas, our
Retail Manager keeps our shop and bar area operating at the
highest level making sure all customers are well looked after.
Last but not least is our maintenance man, Neville Howell,
who ensures the venue is in tip top shape for everyone to
enjoy. A special big thanks not only from me but all our badminton
community to these valued people and their hard
work.
With the continuing challenge of sponsorship and funding I
would like to make special mention of all organisations that,
without their support, we simply could not deliver the facility
and programs we do. Harcourts Cooper & Co, The New Zealand
Community Trust, Foundation North, Lion Foundation,
Auckland Council including Devonport Takapuna, Kaipatiki,
Hibiscus Bays and Upper Harbour Local Boards, Pub Charity,
NZ Racing Board, Roland Jeffrey Physio, Broderick Print and
Four Winds. A huge thank you is extended for all your support.
It is truly appreciated by our badminton community and
makes us who we. We are very grateful.
To the Board of Badminton North Harbour thank you for your
passionate and proactive commitment to our organization.
Your assistance continues to provide great governance and
assists me to oversee a great facility with opportunities for all
badminton players through-out our community. Special
thanks to Karen Blank our Chairperson, and Chris Davis our
President, for their ongoing support and encouragement.
Last, but not least, thank you to our badminton community.
We hope you have enjoyed your badminton this year and
look forward to being of service to you again in 2019.
2019 is already shaping up to be another busy year and behalf
of everyone here at Badminton North Harbour, have a safe
and happy Christmas period. We look forward to seeing you
all again next year.
