COACHING MANAGER’S REPORT<br />

It has been another good year for North Harbour’s badminton<br />

players and teams. During the 2019 season, representatives<br />

have been busy with inter-association events in seniors, masters,<br />

veterans and super-veterans. Junior and senior representatives<br />

have also been involved in a number of national and international<br />

tournaments. A number of our players achievements in 2019<br />

deserve recognition.<br />

Abhinav Manota, New Zealand representative and<br />

North Harbour Development Officer, qualified<br />

for the TOTAL BWF World Championships<br />

<strong>2018</strong> in Nanjing, China. The experience<br />

gained from an event such as<br />

this is second to none and will<br />

be very helpful in future<br />

tournaments. Abhinav<br />

also won the New Zealand<br />

National men’s singles<br />

title and Oceania<br />

men’s single title.<br />

North Harbour junior, Oscar<br />

Guo has recently finished his campaign<br />

at the Youth Olympic Games in<br />

Buenos Aires, Argentina. Oscar finished<br />

his men’s singles campaign with a one win, one loss result which<br />

didn’t allow him to progress. There was however<br />

the exciting prospect of being in an international<br />

eight-person team with an event<br />

called Team Relay. Oscar’s team, Omega<br />

had a fantastic campaign and finished<br />

the event in second place, earning the<br />

team silver Youth Olympic medals.<br />

Other achievements for <strong>2018</strong> have been<br />

at the New Zealand u19 Championships,<br />

winning the men’s singles, doubles and<br />

mixed doubles titles. Traveling as a<br />

member of the New Zealand Junior Team, Oscar also won the<br />

<strong>2018</strong> Australian Junior International men’s singles.<br />

We have three players representing New Zealand travelling to<br />

the World Junior Championships in Canada. Oscar Guo, Edward<br />

Lau and Shaunna Li will play a team event followed by the individual<br />

championships.<br />

Anona Pak, winner of the Massey University Academy of Sport<br />

Sportswoman of the Year Award, paired up with North Harbour’s<br />

Fransisca Rahardja in the Crown Group Australian Open <strong>2018</strong><br />

and reached the quarter finals which is a great achievement.<br />

Anona also won the women’s doubles title at the Yonex New<br />

Zealand National Championships with partner Christine Zhang.<br />

Wisden Cup this year followed a new format of 5 matches per<br />

tie. Our division 1 team finished second behind a strong Waikato<br />

team. Division 3 and 4 won their divisions as did the Masters 1<br />

team, for a third consecutive year. Masters 5 who played in division<br />

5 will be promoted to division 4 in 2019 after winning their<br />

division.<br />

Each year we have a training camp at the end and beginning of<br />

the season. This camp is open for players from other associations<br />

should they wish to participate. This is a five-day camp,<br />

training three times each day, emphasising on fitness, technique<br />

and improving skills. This will run from 10-14 December <strong>2018</strong><br />

and 21-25 January 2019.<br />

Our major junior event for the year is the New Zealand Junior<br />

Team Championships in Palmerston North. This year we sent<br />

seven teams including two teams of u13 age players which is<br />

positive for our development. North Harbour won the u19 team<br />

event and came runner up in the u17, u15 and u13 age groups,<br />

while the u13 II team won the second division event.<br />

North Harbour junior players have achieved well in tournaments<br />

during <strong>2018</strong>. Jaden Mingoa won the boys doubles and was runner<br />

up in the boys’ singles and mixed doubles at the Yonex New<br />

Zealand u13 Championships. Shaunna Li showed that she is a<br />

rising player by winning the u17 and u19 girls singles and runner<br />

up in the u17 and u19 mixed doubles at this year’s age group<br />

championships. Ricky Cheng has improved significantly, winning<br />

the New Zealand u17 boys singles title and was runner up in the<br />

boys’ doubles. Equally making good gains is Nelson Zhang who<br />

came runner up at the Yonex New Zealand u17 Championships<br />

in the boys’ doubles and mixed doubles.<br />

I would like to introduce our new coach, Hanna Yun from Korea.<br />

She will assist in the coaching of our squads to help with technical<br />

aspects of the training ready for 2019.<br />

I would like to thank all parents, staff, coaches, players and<br />

stakeholders who have helped during <strong>2018</strong>. Without them we<br />

would not be achieving the results we have and creating an Association<br />

that is moving forward with our successes. The North<br />

Harbour badminton community is very strong and supportive,<br />

for which I thank you.<br />
