2 Shop downtown Perry on Saturday, Nov. 26 By Cather ine Edgemon Perry Main Street coordinator Perry officials and downtown business owners are encouraging shoppers to have a big impact on the local economy by shopping “small” on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 24. The event, which is downtown Perry’s fourth observance, is a partnership between the Perry Downtown Merchants Council and Perry Main Street Advisory Board. This year 17 businesses are participating in the observance. “Small business is the backbone of not only the city, but the county, state and nation,” said Perry Mayor James E. Faircloth Jr. Faircloth views Small Business Saturday as an opportunity to recognize the role that small businesses play in job creation, boosting the local economy and protecting neighborhoods, while supporting those businesses. “Small businesses provide the majority of jobs in any community,” Faircloth said. “Their growth, prosperity and expansion truly determine the success of a community.” Faircloth said he urges everyone to shop local, small businesses first and to tell others of the positive experience they have shopping with Perry’s downtown retailers. “It (shopping locally) really does make a difference,” he explained. “Shopping small businesses keeps our community healthy,” said Michelle Rhoades, owner of Mossy Creek Natural. “When you shop a small business, you help keep the revenue “We understand the responsibility of giving back and keeping our community strong,” dollars local so that the city can build more parks and create special events. You help the small business owner support local non-profit organizations.” Rhoades said she has also advertised locally to help local newspapers stay strong. “We understand the responsibility of giving back and keeping our community strong,” Rhoades said, explaining that her business has donated to or sponsored nearly a dozen local community groups and schools in 2018 through donations and fundraisers. Event organizers said they expect Nov. 24 to be one of the busiest shopping days ever in downtown Perry. Perry’s Main Street Program works closely with community partners and the city government to promote historic preservation advocacy, business recruitment and retention, beautification, marketing, events and many other efforts to ensure that that heart continues to be healthy. Thanks to property and business owners who had vision and loved the community enough to invest in downtown, they helped turn around the area to make it the attractive, bustling, commercial district that it is today. Trish Cossart, Perry Main Street Advisory Board chairman and the owner of Cossart Design, is proud to participate in an event that draws attention to the historic heart of the community and the businesses located there. “When you shop locally with independentlyowned stores, almost half of every dollar you spend recirculates in the local community,” Cossart said. “These funds pay the salaries of people you know, allow the business owner to purchase goods and serves from other local businesses, help local governments provide essential services and build a sense of community.” MORE ON SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY IN DOWNTOWN PERRY • Shops participating in the promotion, which are primarily on Carroll Street and neighboring streets in the historic downtown area, will be open on the Saturday after Thanksgiving from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. • Shoppers are urged to make the Perry Area Chamber of Commerce their first stop to pick up a shopping passport and “Shop Small” tote, while they last, at the welcome table. • Visit at least 10 participating merchants to receive a stamp for your passport. Shoppers turn in a completed passport at the welcome table.
