retail, arts, recreation, and cultural climate where you can experience the best that life has to offer. We do
all this while still maintaining one of the lowest millage rates in Georgia. World-class schools, safe neighborhoods,
well-maintained infrastructure, low taxes, a phenomenal quality of life, and kind and compassionate people are
services are top notch and the professional and well-trained first responders and law enforcement officers do a
fantastic job of keeping the citizens of Houston County safe. We enjoy all these elements that contribute to a great
quality of life, but we are probably most proud of being home to Robins Air Force Base and the dedicated men and
women who work there. From the airman who is passing through Robins for just a couple of years, to the third
generation civil servant doing the maintenance work to keep the planes flying - our goal is that everyone who serves
reason that brings you to Houston County, please know that you are welcome here. We’re so glad that you have
CENTERVILLE’S
SEAFOOD STAPLE
Snellgrove Seafood
Snellgrove Seafood’s most popular
option is their all-you-can-eat fried
catfish, served with your choice of fries
or a baked potato, homemade coleslaw
and freshly made hush puppies.
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIEANNA ROMERO
A
t the intersection of Houston Lake Road and
Thompson Street stands a seafood spot that
has been a mainstay for decades: Snellgrove
Seafood. And if their longevity isn’t enough
to hook you in, their nautical atmosphere and
flavorful offerings just might do the trick.
Andy and Debi Cannon have owned the restaurant for 30 years,
and Snellgrove has been around for over five decades, starting 52
years ago in 1970.
Starting as a fish market, the location grew to a full service
restaurant and settled into their current location in 1980. They
are the oldest restaurant in Centerville and one of the oldest in
the county.
With their longevity comes accolades. They recently won Best of
Middle Georgia for 2022, and proudly display six Golden Spatula
awards as well as six Best of the Best awards in the entryway.
Self described as “the catfish house,” one of Snellgrove
Seafood’s most popular options is their all-you-can-eat fried
catfish, served with your choice of fries or a baked potato,
homemade coleslaw and freshly made hush puppies.
Andy is also partial to the Captain Andy’s Platter: serving
flounder, grouper, shrimp, oysters and deviled crab, also with a
side of fries or baked potato, coleslaw and hushpuppies.
For those who only like the turf in their “surf and turf,” Snellgrove
also offers chicken, steak and burgers. Andy said preparing for the
dinner rushes at the end of the week is an undertaking.
“It takes three days to get ready for these three days,” Andy said.
26 AT HOME IN HOUSTON COUNTY
CENTERVILLE’S SEAFOOD STAPLE
“We will make 75 gallons of coleslaw … we go through 600 pounds
of whole catfish in 12 hours. [All together,] we cook 1,000 pounds of
seafood in three nights, easy.”
And the community shells out for their culinary creations.
“I have pictures of people standing in line all the way to the fence
next door to the post office,” Andy said. “They’ll start lining up at four
o’clock. It’s not uncommon for us to have 75, 80 people standing in line
for us to open the doors.”
Producing a friendly atmosphere, the restaurant is family owned,
family oriented and the owners are fully devoted to their business
and in the trenches with their employees. Their employees are
equally dedicated. One of their employees has been with the
restaurant for 27 years.
“I am in the kitchen cooking and expediting orders myself,” Andy
said. “[Debi] and her sister run the front end. They meet, greet and seat
people, run the register, take money, take reservations. We all clean
tables, we all do what we have to do.”
Andy and Debi Cannon, Owners of Snellgrove Seafood
Their customer base shares their devotion to the restaurant, and Andy cited
regulars from local governments, the police department and the elderly.
“You know what I’ll tell you about old folks: they’ve been eating a long
time,” Andy explained. “They know where the good food is at.”
Debi added that many of their customers have grown up eating
at Snellgrove.
“We have people that, when we bought the place, they were
little kids, and now they’ve grown up, had their own kids, and
they’ve grown up, and their kids have already had kids. It’s
unbelievable,” Debi said.
Among their regulars is a group that the owners befriended who
makes a sizable drive to visit them.
“They probably drive 80 miles round trip, every weekend,”
Andy said. “He’s the mayor of Rentz, over by Dublin. They come every weekend, and
they’ll bring 10 to 20 people.”
Andy also mentioned customers who make dining at Snellgrove a part of their routine.
“We have customers and groups that have a standing reservation, every Thursday night, every
Saturday night,” Andy said.
“We have a couple that comes out here to eat all three nights, he’s retired from the fire
department at Centerville … we’ve had other people that eat here two nights a week,”
Debi added.
Whether you’re familiar to the restaurant or if it’s your first time going, Andy and Debi promise
a delicious and unforgettable experience at Snellgrove Seafood.
“We treat everybody like family, no matter who comes in the door,” Debi said.
Snellgrove Seafood is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.,
and is located at 632 North Houston Lake Road.
A PERRY STAPLE
The Oil Lamp
A Perry Staple for Home-Cooked Food
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY
BY WILL OLIVER
MANAGING EDITOR
M
any would argue that the Oil Lamp Restaurant is
a Perry staple for home-cooked food.
Restaurant owner Judy Wenger had previous
restaurant experience before opening the Oil Lamp
and its Peach County predecessor, so she said
she took a chance on herself.
“I had worked for restaurants before, and I just thought, ‘If I’m
going to do this the rest of my life, I might as well do it on my
own,’” Wenger said.
Moving from a seven-table restaurant not associated with The Oil
Lamp to her current establishment that seats 110, Wenger said the
journey has been an adventure.
Wenger said she was thinking of the future when deciding to
make the move to Houston County.
“To me, it looked like more potential for growth than what I had
in Fort Valley,” Wenger said.
The first location for the Oil Lamp was also located on General
Courtney Hodges Boulevard, but in a different location for 14 years.
The current location was a building that came up in foreclosure,
and Wenger jumped on the opportunity around 2009.
When asked what sets her restaurant apart from other offerings
in Perry, she wanted to vouch for other well-run businesses in the
area that also provide great meals. She emphasized that the quality
of service is crucial to the Oil Lamp’s identity.
She said the menu has remained mostly consistent, but she likes
to add something special on occasion.
“Recently, I brought back the grilled red trout and the 12 oz.
ribeye steak,” Wenger said. “I haven’t had those since COVID, but
“
If you love home
cooking, this is
the spot for you.
recently I brought them back, and I think people appreciate that.”
She said some of her personal favorites include the roast beef
and gravy, which is sold every day. One of her favorite Thursday
offerings is turkey and gravy. Her favorite weekly addition is
cornbread dressing and cranberry sauce.
She said some of her favorite memories over the years have
involved getting to know the regular customers and visitors alike.
“I’m very humbled by it, and I’m glad that they appreciate the
food that I do cook and that they keep coming back,” Wenger
added. “I’m very grateful.”
The Oil Lamp is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Wednesday hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The restaurant is located at 401 General Courtney Hodges Blvd
in Perry.
A LEGACY OF BARBECUING, GRILLING AND FRYING
White Diamond Grill
Take a Seat in Houston County History
s you head to the east end of Houston County, past
Athe railroad tracks that were once the town’s main
thoroughfare and into Bonaire, you’ll find an old
one-story building off of Georgia Highway 247.
The old white brick that makes up the storefront
is humble. The sign above that stretches above the
building simply says, “White Diamond Grill,” in plain white text.
As you enter the building, you’re greeted with warm lighting, a
few simple booths and tables and several members of staff working
behind the counter, cooking food and ringing up tickets. Red seats
welcome new customers, and bottles of homemade barbeque sauce
welcome newcomers to try something they haven’t had before.
This humble setting hides a secret: a legacy of barbecuing, grilling
and frying that has kept this business in operation since 1949.
Nancy Childree, White Diamond General Manager, spoke a bit about
the cultural point’s history.
“It’s been in Mr. Charlie Jay’s family for generations after generations,
way back when,” Childree said. “It’s always been in the family. It’s
a family-run business. They started years and years ago, and it’s
really good.”
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TYLER MEISTER
Being one of the county’s oldest restaurants, plenty of memories
have been made within the eatery’s walls. All of those memories
center around White Diamond’s menu.
Childree highlighted their catfish plate, their award-winning
hamburger — but above all, Childree said their barbecue is what
sets them apart.
The barbecue is smoked on site in a pit attached to the building,
one that’s been with the establishment for years. The meat is coated
in a homemade mustard-based barbecue sauce, and then served
alongside a bun or a roll, in addition to several options for sides.
Often, Childree said that those ordering the meal often grab coleslaw
and Brunswick stew to go along with it.
“The barbecue is outstanding,” Childree said. “The barbecue is our
best seller — people love the barbecue.”
From the combination of the restaurant’s historic nature and the
unmatchable quality in food, Childree said that the community has
supported them “very, very well.”
“We stay busy all day, all night long,” Childree said. “They love
White Diamond, they really do. Even when the pandemic hit and
everything, we closed the dining room, but people still came to the
window. They’d be stretched out to the street — they wanted it.”
The White Diamond Grill
has a legacy of barbecuing,
grilling and frying that
has kept this business in
operation since 1949.
White Diamond Grill is
located at 497 GA-247,
in Bonaire.

Let’s Talk About
Hospice
“We wish we had you sooner” is
a resounding phrase I have heard
families say throughout my years
of providing hospice care to our
community. People do not know
what they need until they need it.
Let me explain. If your dishwasher
breaks, then you need another one.
You start searching for sales on the
internet or maybe you visit a retailer
who sells appliances. Either way
you began your search because you
needed something. This should
not be what we do regarding more
important aspects of our lives.
Understanding what your community
resources are, why they are here and
what they can do for you and your
family is paramount so that when
you enter into a crisis, and trust
me, a crisis will come, you know
immediately what your plan is and
how to obtain the assistance you
need.
Hospice is not a word that rolls off
of the tongue nor is it a topic most
people wish to discuss. It’s difficult
for most people to engage in a serious
discussion about end-of-life with a
loved one and especially a parent or
even a child (young or adult). But if
we can make a conscious decision
to just tackle the thing then we can
get it behind us. Afterall, death is
a sure thing. Transitioning from
this earthly presence is as real as a
new life entering and they are both
processes – one with joy, if we are
blessed, and one with sadness. We
should never fear the inevitable
but rather embrace the advanced
opportunity to take advantage of
every resource available that helps
navigate the uncharted waters.
So, why don’t people seek hospice
services earlier than later? I’ll tell
you. People, in general, are afraid of
dying, and are often in denial about
their terminal illness and how much
time they have remaining. They also
perhaps do not know what they
qualify for or what services are even
available.
Non-profit hospice organizations,
often deeply embedded in the
community, typically share a unified
mission which is to provide the
highest quality of care with respect
to terminal illnesses and their
associated symptoms. These services
are not limited to nursing alone.
There is bereavement support,
volunteer services, social services,
chaplaincy support and many other
special programs that focus upon
more specific needs.
If you, a loved one, or a friend has
a terminal illness and a physician
has advised the terminal illness is
likely to end your life within six
months or less then you should
be reaching out to hospice to gain
services. Immediately. All terminal
illnesses often present with difficult
symptoms for which you will desire
comfort. You absolutely do not
want to wait until the last moments
of life to contact hospice. Contact
them early. Ask questions. Help
yourself to understand what is
available to you to help with your
specific situation and if you are able,
reach out BEFORE you enter into
the crisis.
Hospice provides necessary medications,
medical equipment, products for
associated care, as well as an entire
care team experienced and devoted
to you AND your family. If you are
in the midst of a terminal illness
wouldn’t you want your family to
receive assistance in your care?
passing to help families and friends
through the grief process.
Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance
companies do cover hospice expenses.
So why would you not request services
as soon as you are able? Don’t be
burdened and don’t wait. Let people
help you. There are many of us just
waiting to offer a helping hand.
And remember, utilizing hospice
services is not a death sentence. It
absolutely does not mean you are
dying today. In fact, patients who
receive personalized medical care in
their home setting often do better
and have a better quality of life for
their remaining days than those
who do not. Please allow a NONprofit
hospice organization to help
you realize a more comfortable
and improved quality of life for the
remainder of your days. This is our
promise, our dedication, and our
mission.
Which Hearing Aid Is Right For You?
If you’re in the market for hearing aids, you’ve probably noticed something while shopping
around: there are a LOT of choices! But which ones are right for your needs?
Here’s something you’ve probably noticed while shopping around the hearing care market: hearing aids
come in all shapes, sizes, and price points! Whether you’re buying your first hearing device or upgrading
from an old pair that no longer suits your needs, you probably find yourself asking questions such as:
•Which style of hearing aid is best for my type of hearing loss?
•Should I choose rechargeable or traditional battery hearing aids?
•Do I need streaming accessories with my hearing aids, or can I accomplish everything I need
via a smartphone app?
The good news is Beltone is here to help you and answer all of your questions.
If you suspect you may be experiencing hearing loss, the first step is to take our simple online hearing
screening. This screening will provide you with a rating that you and a Beltone hearing care professional
can use to determine how best to proceed. Next, set up a free appointment with a Beltone hearing care
professional in your area. A Beltone expert will conduct a more thorough examination of your hearing
and provide you with a complete diagnosis.
No two types of hearing loss are the same (more on that later), so it’s important to weigh the pros and
cons of different hearing aid features and benefits, such as:
•The latest, conveniently rechargeable battery models vs. models with traditional changeable
batteries
•Cutting-edge sound processing features that can handle a variety of sound environments
•Wireless streaming and controls for phone calls, music, and more
•Apps and accessories to further enhance your hearing experience
•Perhaps most importantly of all, ongoing care and support for your hearing aids following your
purchase
Hearing aids are more than just a product. They are an investment and experience that will impact
every aspect of your life.
That’s why, when you choose Beltone, you get more than just a hearing aid. You get a hearing care
partner by your side every step of the way—before, during and after your purchase. Our Belcare program
of ongoing protection and support will give you peace of mind about your investment— and ensure you
continue hearing what matters the most to you.
For over 80 years we’ve helped countless people find a solution to their hearing loss by matching
them with cutting-edge, top-rated hearing aid solutions. Begin your journey to better hearing with
RAISING THE
BAR
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILL OLIVER, MANAGING EDITOR
You’re out and about in Warner Robins, maybe with some
friends, and you need a place to stop, hang loose and have
a drink before or after dinner. How about a view to go along
with that?
Gracies: A Rooftop Bar on Highway 96 would be the go-to
spot for all of the above. You’ll find it sitting atop the Best Western Plus
Executive Residency at Rigby’s Water World.
Gracie Preston Rigby, owner of the bar, shared more, saying that her
establishment offers something other places don’t.
“Gracie’s is a safe environment that is a far distance from the connotation
of a smoky or loud bar,” Rigby said. “It is meant for those that are seeking
out a space to feel good about themselves, have delicious cocktails and
appetizers, all with a team that cares deeply about the guest experience.”
As for the views mentioned before, Rigby said they were part of her and
her fiancé’s love story.
“You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better sunset spot; our space is in direct
view of the beautiful sunsets that Middle Georgia experiences,” Rigby
said. “The deep purples, pinks and oranges by a fire, five stories up is as
romantic as it gets.”
She explained that the rooftop spot wasn’t originally included in the
hotel’s build, but instead came later. The space was derived following
visits to similar venues around the nation and a drive to stay ahead of
new food and beverage trends.
“We saw a void in Middle Georgia and
had an opportunity to fill it — and so
was born the first true rooftop bar in
Middle Georgia,” Rigby said.
When initially opening in September
2020, Gracie’s offered drinks and
charcuterie boards. With changes in
trends among the realms of wine and
charcuterie, the bar looks to stay on
top of it.
Rigby said, with time, they’ve worked
to include heartier bites on their food
menu, concocting a strong cocktail
menu to boot.
“One of my absolute favorite things
we did opening the space was name
the first menu of cocktails after loved
ones and meaningful instances in mine
and my sister’s lives,” Rigby said. “We
sat down and went through countless
cocktails, and sought out suggestions
from the existing bar staff.
“The favorite that remains is the Rigby’s
Choice named after my dad, Steve
Rigby. He loves a good Old Fashioned,
and I’d say we have one of the best in
Middle Georgia.”
As for ambiance and decor, Rigby said
there are a couple of things they made
use of to keep people coming back —
and even posting about the bar online.
“I really feel that the hedge wall and
the custom neon sign really helped
propel us forward as a marketable
and desirable destination,” Rigby said.
“Originally, that same area was going
to be a wall of TVs.
“Keeping up with marketing trends,
though, that’s just not what people are
looking for. People that seek out our
type of establishment are looking to
In terms of local support, Rigby said her
family couldn’t be more thankful for the
community and their business.
post about it and gain attention for a killer picture — and one they
are proud to show off, too. It makes us proud to provide such a
unique place.”
Rigby said the bar is always operating with a celebration in mind,
mentioning a couple of festive times of the year at Gracie’s.
“New Year’s Eve is always a fun time with our disco ball drop at
midnight,” Rigby said. “We also offer a package special for the
Igloos as well.
“Last year, we included two hours in the Igloo, a bottle of
champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. This is a great
addition to an overnight stay, romantic dinner or even Galentine’s.”
“Houston County, the City of Warner
Robins and the Robins Regional Chamber
have absolutely supported us from the
beginning,” Rigby said. “We love doing
business in Middle Georgia and have
found such a supportive community. There
are few other places that are so businessfriendly,
welcome ideas and growth, and
are aligned with the desire to propel the
area as a destination for visitors, residents
and companies.”
Rigby gave a shoutout to the staff of the
various businesses, including Gracie’s, and
their role in the day-to-day operations.
“The staff around us is top tier,” Rigby
said. “Our team amazes me in what we
accomplish and can execute. It starts from
the top with Steve Rigby, who has a vision,
and not only sees it, but makes it happen.”
Gracie’s acts as part of a broader system of businesses, including
the previously mentioned Best Western Plus Executive Residency,
Rigby’s Entertainment Complex, Rigby’s Water World and The
Patio at Rigby’s.
If you wanted a full dinner and a drink, the Rigby family opened
Walk-On’s just next door back in November. Also, multiple other
food options are located within a mile of Gracie’s.
Beginning mid-year 2023, Gracie’s will start accepting bookings
for “The Overlook,” a 300-person capacity rooftop space fit for
weddings, receptions and large celebrations.
“We have hosted countless holiday parties, business events,
rehearsal dinners, receptions, birthday celebrations and
anniversary celebrations,” Rigby said. “Since we have been so
Although being a family-owned operation can come with its
challenges, the Rigby family is up to the task of operating Gracie’s
and their other businesses with the growth of the county in mind.
“Despite how hard it can be to work alongside family, we are a
close family and are dedicated to the growth of our business and
the subsequent area,” Rigby said. ”We love seeing new ventures
come to Houston County. … We plan to contribute positively to the
workforce, citizens and travelers of Middle Georgia, and hope to
leave a positive impact on the people we are so grateful to host.”
Drawing From the Past, Looking Towards the Future
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIEANNA ROMERO
THE IBIS ROOM
Formerly Still Life Cocktail Bar, the Ibis Room
opened in 2021, making for a newer addition to
the nightlife scene in Warner Robins. They provide
a welcoming and social atmosphere where guests
can mingle over mixers and enjoy the evening.
As you enter the bar, you’re greeted by Jeeves. Colorful
mood lighting and immaculate décor surround you as you
order drinks. The tables are surrounded by artwork from
around the community, and the lounge draws inspiration
from a vintage speakeasy.
The bartenders are highly trained and will make just about
anything. They’re trained to follow good recipes to the tee
and use high-quality liquor, ensuring your drink is made perfectly
the first time.
For 2023, highly recommended from their new menu is the
Corpse Reviver #2: a mixed cocktail of gin, aperitif wine and
a spritz of absinthe floated on top. The bar’s owner, Carmen
Antonio, is also partial to their Negroni, and also recommends
the Lemoncello and Meloncello.
Make no mistake; the bar isn’t a run-of-the-mill place to enjoy
drinks. The layout is perfectly engineered to promote socializing
instead of watching screens.
“Instead of small tables, we have tall tables, so you can
communicate with the bar people,” Antonio explained. “Instead
of having tables all over the dance area, we have couches, and I
have a Sonos system, which is really nice. It goes from the front
of the house all the way to the back.”
The bar also features special events, bands, comedians and is
pet friendly as well.
You could say owning businesses runs in the family. Her son
owns a couple of bars and a restaurant in Seattle. Antonio’s
brother inspired her to open the bar, and her son designed
the atmosphere, laying the foundation for it as it began to run.
Over the year, the bar has drawn in many locals, something
Antonio is proud of, and its location, while secluded from
other bars in town, is seen by her as an opportunity to make
Commercial Circle a downtown development of sorts.
She envisions restaurants nearby and several more bars
coming to the area, making the location a place where you
can spend the entire evening taking in the nightlife.
“I would like two more bars and three more restaurants,”
she said. “That would be awesome.”
In the meantime, Antonio just wants the public to come
out, let their hair down and enjoy themselves.
“I just want you to have a good time,” Antonio said. “I
want you to unwind, relax and have a good time.”
The Ibis Room is located at 145 S Commercial Circle,
and is open on Wednesday and Thursday from 4 p.m.
to midnight. On Fridays and Saturdays, the bar is open
I have lived in the Warner Robins area off and on most of
my life, continuously for the last 23 years. My father, a retired
SAC B-52 pilot, was frequently stationed at Robins AFB and
where we lived during his time in Vietnam. We moved to
Warner Robins the first time when I was just over 4 years
old. We loved the area and made it our permanent home. I
graduated from Northside High School and Wesleyan College
with a Bachelor of Music degree. I married in 1983 and we
moved around until 2000 (he was also in the Air Force) when
we retired and moved home to be close to our aging parents.
Our three sons graduated from Houston County area schools
and are all proud graduates of the University of Georgia.
I began my Real Estate career in 2002 and have enjoyed
helping both Buyers and Sellers with their Real Estate needs
for over 20 years. I have personal experience related to both
our transient and long-term communities driven by Robins
Air Force Base, the largest single site employer in the state.
While many are only here for a few years before moving to
their next duty station, others stay for the opportunity of a
rewarding Civil Service/Aircraft Industry career. As an Air
Force brat, I lived frequent relocation. I never attended the
same elementary school for more than one year. Combined,
I attended 8 different elementary schools! I can relate to
moving your family and the impact it has on them. Conversely,
our retirement to the area gives me insight into the families
seeking the stability of employment on or supporting Robins
AFB.
I relish the opportunity to help families find their home here
in Warner Robins and the surrounding communities. I love
this area and I love the people.
MAIN STREET BAR CRAFTS COCKTAILS FOR COMMUNITY CONNOISSEURS, BEYOND
A
local mother-son duo provides a unique outlet to
area nightlife with an emphasis on the visitor’s
experience — and you can find it down on Main
Street in Perry. Shannon Stricklen and Zach Bibbins
welcome all to come see them at Main Street Bar.
Stricklen, owner of the bar, said she grew up in Lowville, New
York, just 30 minutes from the Canadian border, working at a
nearby ski lodge bar where she learned the tricks of the trade.
She moved to Warner Robins in 1998 but has lived in Perry now
for four years. Before she and her husband, Jimmy, made the
move to live where they are now, her daughter played a role in a
show featured at Perry Players Community Theatre, inviting them
to see the show and check out the city.
“We were at the theatre so much, we decided to move down
here,” Stricklen said. “ … This was my dream that I was able to
do, my passion. I love throwing events and having parties at my
house, so this was just up my alley, just on a bigger scale.”
Zach Bibbins, Stricklen’s son and the bar general manager,
also brings bartending and liquor industry experience to
the table.
He began bartending in his early 20s
and saw work in a handful
of states during that
time, including
Missouri, Mississippi and upstate New York. For a time, he also
worked on the production side of the industry, making bourbon
for Woodford Reserve.
Bibbins said running the business alongside his mother is a pleasure.
“It’s not near as bad as people expect,” Bibbins said, chuckling.
“I was really lucky to be born with such a cool mom. I don’t
mind it one bit … [She’s] exactly what you’d want out of a
business partner, I’m just lucky to say mine is my mom.”
“I’ve got to say, I could not do this without my son, Zachary,”
Stricklen said. “He and I run this place together, and I could
not do it without him — his bourbon knowledge, his liquor
knowledge, my business side, my decorating side. But he is what
makes this place roll from week to week.”
Stricklen attended college and majored in commercial illustration
and design, adding that her experience there influenced the layout,
amenities and design elements sprinkled throughout the bar.
“I wanted to bring pieces of New York here and make it an
experience, for people to come do something that nobody else has
here in Perry,” Stricklen said.
The paint on the walls establishes a “dark and moody”
atmosphere, while the chandeliers floating above offer some
“shimmer” to the environment, “making women feel special as
well as men feel comfortable.”
Bibbins said Main Street
Bar provides a different
experience from
AT HOME IN HOUSTON COUNTY 71
MAIN STREET BAR
other bars in the area, making it an ideal place for a meaningful
conversation or an intimate date night.
He also spoke on the growth of Houston County and how it
impacts Perry and its entertainment offerings, saying Main Street
Bar has set up shop right where it needs to be.
“For the longest time, [Perry] didn’t see any growth relative to
Warner Robins,” Bibbins said. “Now, in these past few years, it’s
absolutely exploded, both population and industry. However, I
truly feel like in a few more years’ time, downtown Perry will be
an entertainment district to put on the map.”
Stricklen spoke on some of their more popular drinks: the Main
Street Margarita, a concoction of 1800 Reposado tequila, Grand
Marnier and fresh squeezed lime juice; the Espresso Martini,
featuring classic or cream espresso vodka, Kahlua and cream; and
The Empress, made up of Empress gin, desert pear, ginger beer
and lime juice.
The lime juice is squeezed fresh every day, and they always use
fresh fruit and garnishes to top off their cocktails. You also won’t
find well liquor used in the drinks at this bar; there’s thought and
purpose behind every quality ingredient.
“All of our drinks are special, made with care and made the
correct way,” Stricklen said.
They said their bourbon selection gives other Middle Georgia
establishments a run for their money, offering over 65 different
options for whiskey lovers. Bibbins recommended the whiskey
on the rocks with either Eagle Rare or Stagg Jr. bourbons.
Main Street Bar also partners with other area businesses for their
food selections, featuring brownies from Bodega Brew as well as
dips from The Perfect Pear — including an exclusive buffalo dip.
All four of their dips are locally sourced, and Bibbins vouched
for the cold spinach dip from Acres & Oak Kitchen.
The designs of the charcuterie boards are updated monthly, and
Bibbins called them “bountiful and beautiful.”
They both praised the community support and showed
appreciation for the feedback received from visitors over their
nearly one year in business. Dec. 17 marks Main Street Bar’s
one-year anniversary.
“Perry and the surrounding communities have been extremely
supportive, and it has exceeded our expectations,” Stricklen
added. “We felt like this was definitely a need in Perry.”
70 72 AT HOME IN HOUSTON COUNTY
“The community has been
incredibly receptive this first year
open, first and foremost,” Bibbins said. “That’s
the biggest thing, is how welcome we’ve been made
here, which speaks volumes to me … it’s just blissful every day,
knowing we’ve established a reputation and that people respect
what we’re doing — not only do they appreciate it, but they
respect it. And that means the world to me that everybody not
only seems satisfied, they seem generally happy with what
we’re doing.”
He added that keeping the inventory updated and fresh has been
a priority for them, and they still have all of their original staff
from their opening date, besides one person.
Folks come to Main Street Bar from all over Middle Georgia and
even beyond. People from Macon, Marshallville, Hawkinsville
and more visit the bar on a regular basis. Stricklen said that at
least
20 people
a week come visit
while traveling on I-75.
See live music at Main Street Bar on
Thursday and Saturday nights. Happy Hour takes place
daily from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., offering half-price drinks. Contact
Shannon or Zach if you need space for a corporate outing, or
even wedding and birthday parties.
The bar is closed exclusively on Tuesdays but open every other
day of the week from 3 p.m. to midnight. See Shannon, Zach and
the rest of the team at 740 Main St. in Perry.
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIEANNA ROMERO
FINE ARTS SOCIETY
Leonardo Da Vinci famously said,
“The artist sees what others only
catch a glimpse of.” Locally, artists
are sharing their insights with
their community, and one of their
groups is a forerunner in bringing
their voices to a greater audience: The Fine Art Society of
Middle Georgia.
Local Gallery Wants to Make
Fine Art Accessible for Community
The group has been part of the community for almost 23 years,
starting at their president’s house. After the group became
focused on crafts, the Fine Art Society branched off to focus
on fine art. The arts and crafts groups eventually combined
again, creating the Fine Art Society that stands today. The group
celebrates their anniversary in February.
Starting out, the group met at members’ houses, libraries and
even at Flint Energies, before settling into their gallery space
on Commercial Circle. Now the group has grown to over
100 members, and they have artists from around the area,
and some who have come in from overseas, including Korea,
Japan and Czechoslovakia.
“Being the International City, we have international artists as
well,” Gallery Manager and Parliamentarian Leslie Wallace said.
They promote their artists’ work at the gallery and branch out into
the community to share their visions. You may even see pieces
from their creators at libraries, farmers’ markers and the Georgia
National Fair.
As time went on, they have had countless partnerships with
community organizations to bring art education to children and to
the public.
“There’s so many things over the years, that every year is often
different, the sort of things that we do,” President Deanna Griffin
said. “We tend to forget all the stuff we do in our interaction, but
we do try to interact a good deal with the public.”
Internally, the society holds meetings, gallery shows and
holiday parties to foster relationships within their group. For the
community, the gallery also offers classes in painting, drawing
and digital design.
FINE ARTS SOCIETY
Furthering their goal of art education, the group collaborates with
local colleges to provide artwork for students to interpret. They
also partner with the school district to conduct student art shows.
Overall, the society strives to bring a culture of creativity to
the city.
“We give Warner Robins the opportunity to see the fine arts, not
just the crafts,” Griffin said. “Because there’s a lot of crafts that
are going on, and this is the fine arts.”
“Everything here is original,” Wallace added.
“This is like a little museum here in Warner Robins,” Griffin replied.
They bring a culture of collaboration within their society as well,
inviting artists to gather and bounce ideas off of each other.
“With this area here, they’re allowed to come here, paint and talk
to each other, mingle and chat about random stuff. Could be art,
but could be anything,” Wallace said.
“It’s like how the painters in the Impressionist Period used to do,”
Griffin added. “They would meet at cafés and talk art. It’s a brain
trust so we can share our enthusiasm and build enthusiasm.”
Over the years, the gallery has become a mainstay in the heart of
the community and the hearts of the people that they have met
WARNER ROBINS LITTLE THEATRE / PERRY PLAYERS COMMUNITY THEATRE / CENTER STAGE FOR CHRIST / THE MUSE
HOUSTON COUNTY
A COMMUNITY OF THEATRE
Warner Robins Little Theatre
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TYLER MEISTER
When you picture in your mind the things that make up Houston
County, what do you imagine?
Maybe you think of the various roads that we all consider main
thoroughfares: Highway 41, Watson Boulevard, Highway 96,
Russell Parkway. Maybe you think of a business, a park or a
specific group of people. Robins Air Force Base or even the
Houston County School District are strong contenders as well.
But the creatively inclined know that Houston County is a place
of art. Murals and art pieces dot the landscape, and Houston
County can lay claim to not one, not two, not even three, but
four community theatres.
These theatres, some new, some old, are points of culture in
Houston County. They tell stories they believe will draw an
audience, and one day the records of their shows could help
those in the future to better understand us today.
If you’re looking to take in a little of that culture, here’s what
you need to know:
Warner Robins Little Theatre is Houston County’s oldest, currently
operational center for performing arts. Vice President Bill Felton
told us all about it.
“We started back in the early 60s,” Felton said. “It started with
a group of people who met in the living room of Cheryl Bayer
92 AT HOME IN HOUSTON COUNTY
A COMMUNITY OF THEATRE
Taylor. Her parents were very into the arts and knew some like-minded people, and they
decided to come together and form a little theatre.”
WRLT moved from stage to stage until eventually finding a permanent location
in a dairy barn on Elberta Road. Folding chairs and hay bales were commonplace,
until the group purchased an old movie theatre on Front Street. They performed
here until it burned down during one of their performances.
After the fire, WRLT was once again nomadic, moving from stage
to stage, until they purchased a building that at one time, was a
barbecue restaurant. They’ve been there ever since.
For 62 years, WRLT has dedicated itself to performing for the people
of Houston County.
“Storytelling is a tradition throughout our history,” Felton said. “It
goes all the way back to ancient Greece. It’s important — people
have messages that need to get out, and fortunately we are blessed
with having good writers out there in the world that want to tell a
specific story to enlighten or entertain, or bring a piece of happiness
into the world. By using the format of theatre, I think it can get to a
pretty good audience.”
The City of Perry shouldn’t be counted out. Perry Players Community
Theatre, getting their start in the early 1980s, has served audiences with
quality productions ever since.
President James Strickland said that the theatre was started as a small group
of people with a passion for local theatre.
“They would travel around and do shows in different places, [it was] just really
small,” Strickland said. “Then, around the early 90s, mid 90s, they bought the
building, everyone got together and bought the building at 909 Main Street where
it presently is. They purchased that building and renovated it into the present day
theatre it is now.”
The 170-seat theatre has been home to many performances throughout the years and
has seen a number of updates to stay current.
A COMMUNITY OF THEATRE
“It’s really grown to something now that is kind of a staple, I think,
in Perry, ”Strickland said.“Our motto has always been, ‘we don’t
require experience, we provide it. Our goal, what we really like,
is having local people able to come and do shows, participate in
shows whether it be directing, choreography or acting.”
Perry Players works to create a connection between those on
stage and those who come to see them, to best serve their
audience and tell the story they’re attempting to perform. That,
Strickland said, is what makes community theatre special.
Center Stage for Christ is a theatre that does things a little differently.
After retiring from her teaching position at Houston County
High School in 2006, Diane Kinsley found herself with a need
for a theatrical outlet. Working together with her husband, Dr.
Michael Kinsley, the two began putting on productions at
Perry Methodist Church.
Today, Michael Kinsley writes each production, while Diane
Kinsley works with actors and acts in the plays herself.
Typically, they produce three performances a year, a combination
of murder mystery dinner shows for fundraising and comedies
where regular, everyday people have to solve problems they’ve
often gotten themselves into. Sometimes things work out, other
times they don’t.
“People that have been on a spiritual journey their entire
lives can enjoy our shows,” Diane Kinsley said. “And people
that have never stepped into a church in their lives can enjoy
our shows.”
All the money collected at these shows goes to a charity, whether
it be the HALO Group, Stop Hunger Now, Family Promises or
any of the ministries in Perry Methodist’s missions department.
Michael Kinsley spoke of the guiding principals of the theatre:
“that the participants have a spiritual experience while
delivering a great piece of entertainment to our community.”
You can find more information about Center
Stage for Christ and their productions by
A COMMUNITY OF THEATRE
Another theatre in Perry: The Muse. Although the building they
perform in is one of the eldest constructions, The Muse itself
has begun producing shows and holding events here just in
the last year.
Courtney and Tyler Bryant spoke on some of the theatre’s history
and what sets it apart in how they tell stories.
Built in 1950 and originally opened as a movie theatre, The Muse,
at one time, was no stranger to large audiences. After the movie
theatre closed in the 70s, however, the building stayed vacant
for quite some time, trading hands from one owner to another.
In 2021, The Muse was purchased by the Bryants and converted
into an event venue and theatre, with its original theatre
aspects still intact: the ticket booth, concession stand and
projection booth.
The Muse Theatre is now the Art Deco marvel of Commerce
Street, and hosts weddings, concerts, performances — not
to mention the murder mystery shows written, directed and
often performed in by Tyler Bryant.
In the last year, Bryant has produced a number of murder
mysteries that have been performed at The Muse. His shows
are unique in that he writes the beginning and end, but leaves
the middle open for his actors to improv through. Theres is
often a show full of laughs, twists and turns, keynoted with
audience participation as well as a dinner that comes with
your ticket.
When asked what guides his storytelling, Bryant said he asks
three questions.
“Is it relatable? Is it believable? And is it also fun?” Bryant asked.
“I want my patrons to have a fun time and forget about life for a
little bit, and just enjoy two hours of awesome entertainment,
whether it be music, the acting, whatever it may be — I want
them to enjoy the ride.”
DIGITAL TOURS OF PERRY
TRY DIGITAL TOURS OF PERRY
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILL OLIVER, MANAGING EDITOR
HAVE YOU FOUND YOURSELF
near the City of Perry and looking for
something to pass the time?
Look no further than the self-guided
digital tours offered by a partnership
between the Perry Convention and Visitors
Bureau and the Perry Area Historical
Society featuring the city’s historic
downtown landmarks, churches around the
city as well as notable homes.
Becky Wilson of the Perry CVB said
they began the tours in a driving-friendly
format, featuring landmarks with signs
nearby containing a QR code to scan
and receive more information on the
structure’s historical significance. Other
documentation was available containing
information as well.
There have been moves made towards
featuring a digital tour ran through the
CVB website.
This digital option also means one can
access the tour from anywhere, including
from their computer at home. Photo
and video options give users a unique
perspective as compared to the previous
version of the tour.
“It allowed us to put in historical photos,”
Wilson said. “When you’re looking at that
house, you can see what it looked like 100
years ago.”
Some of the notable landmarks, in
Wilson’s opinion, included the area
where Houston High School used to be
located near Lumpkin’s
Shell Station. While that
building is not there
anymore, the tour was
able to feature past
photos of the building,
principal and the
football team.
Another local house and its backyard were
where SSS Tonic was concocted. That
tonic is still sold and used to this day.
She said a couple had, at one point,
come into the Welcome Center looking
for something to pass the time in Perry.
Wilson sent them on their way with the
tour, and the feedback was positive.
Other feedback has been positive, and
Wilson said they hope to add more content
to the website as it becomes available.
“We looked into doing the website
because we could add things and adjust
without having to put everything into
print,” Wilson said. “We felt like that was
a move toward the future.”
GET OUTSIDE
Center Park AT CENTERVILLE
Centerville’s Front Door to Community Activity
By Brieanna Romero
If you’re looking to get outdoors in Houston County,
Centerville offers up a great spot to get some fresh air, take
a walk or attend one of their many gatherings. Opening two
years ago, Center Park features a playground, walking trails
and pavilions.
The park has also become a central point for the city’s
events. Last year, the city hosted Food Truck Fridays,
farmers markets, the Fall Festival and their 4th of July
celebration at the location.
If you’d like to host an event at Center Park, the pavilion
is also available for rent.
The park is also a good place to stay active, as Special
Events Coordinator Tess Chambers explained.
“There are mile markers to let you know how long the track
is,” Chambers explained. “It’s busy all the time.”
The park has grown tremendously over the years, due in
large part to the events and splash pad, Chambers said.
“The splash pad has helped bring a lot of people to the area,
to take part in utilizing the park,” Chambers said. “The
events and stuff that we have there draw a lot of people.”
The splash pad is a perfect way to beat the summer heat
and is open from springtime to Labor Day.
Overall, having something outdoors to do in the city is
important to Centerville in serving the public, and they
believe the park does that perfectly.
“It gives them something to do,” Chambers said. “It gives
them a chance to be outside, be with their family or just
have some alone time, whether it’s walking through the
park, or a place to eat lunch. Just to have a quiet moment
and enjoy being outside.”
The value it adds to the community and to your budget is
a bonus as well.
“It provides an added value to the community, by giving
them a place that is clean, a place that doesn’t cost
anything,” Chambers said. “It doesn’t cost anything to go
there. It provides added value to the community because
it’s just a place to be able to gather or to enjoy.”

Rozar Park
An Active Destination
By Will Oliver, Managing Editor
Rozar Park on Keith Drive in Perry
offers visitors an array of leisure options
in an active destination format.
Sedrick Swan, Perry leisure services
director, provided some more
information on the amenities and
attractions there at Rozar and how
they support the city’s mission of
prioritizing the quality of life for its
residents and a pleasurable experience
for its visitors.
“It’s considered one of our destination
parks, and we try to have a larger
playground structure, ballfields,
possibly a community center and
walking trails,”
Swan said.
Throughout the year, Rozar will host
various youth athletics as well as
family community events.
To add to this, visitors will find an oval
off-road RC track between the baseball
and soccer fields closer to Kings
Chapel Road. A local group comes out
once a month to host races, but the
track is public access as long as Rozar
is open.
Two fishing ponds there are stocked
annually. An annual fishing rodeo
brings lovers of the sport to the area.
Want to take a walk and enjoy nature?
A 1-mile trail awaits.
Outdoor basketball courts, an
outdoor chess table and
horseshoe pitching
area encourage
others to come
out and enjoy
the area.
An 18-hole disc golf
course brings out annual
tournaments as well, offering
some challenging and some
beginner-friendly shots.
Adult sports at the park will
be expanded upon here at
some point, including Wiffle
ball, flag football and ultimate
Frisbee leagues.
The youth basketball league is
primarily housed in the gym
there at the park. Pickleball
courts are located inside the
facility as well.
Along with the Juneteenth
celebration, the Perry Water
Battle takes place at Rozar,
offering ways for kids and
adults alike to beat the heat
during the dog days of summer.
The city offers a Special
Needs Easter Egg Hunt around
the time of the holiday.
Movie nights may be coming
to Rozar eventually, offering
fun flicks in the greenspace of
the park.
The surrounding area is mostly
residential, and one day, the
park may extend all the way to
Barbara Calhoun Park.
Unless there is a planned
activity, the park is normally
open from sunrise to sunset.

Ted Wright Park
Warner Robins’ Premier Green Space
By Tyler Meister
Ted Wright Park is a well-known location along Moody
Road in Warner Robins. Parents and grandparents
can remember growing up in the area, playing on the
playground and then later bringing their children there to
do the same.
Recently, however, the park that was once known for
baseball fields, softball and a touch of tennis, saw
some updates.
A park well known for the giant metal caterpillar greeting
new visitors, Ted Wright Park, according to Department
Head of Parks and Recreation Jarred Reneau, will now
serve much more of the community.
“We can bring the whole the community together in one
area now,” Reneau said. “Just to watch the diversity, the
different activities, birthday parties and all the events that
have gone on so far, it’s awesome for the county.”
The park now features a number of amenities, including
12 pickleball courts, an ADA-accessible playground
boasting the county’s first 3D climber and AstroTurf,
as well as a splash pad for the summer, a walking trail
and spaces for small or medium-size gatherings. The
caterpillar is still there, too — it’s just got a new coat of
paint now.
area — but the park’s new amenities have also attracted
people all over Houston County, as well as from areas
outside of the county.
Ted Wright has such a history in Warner Robins — it’s
had kids playing on it since at least the 1970s, Reneau
confirmed — that it’s become integral to the city.
Municipal parks like this one have many purposes,
such as giving children a place to play, giving a free,
easy access location for parents to share time with their
children and generally beautifying the area.
“Being a big [Air Force] base town, obviously we have
people who are in and out of here a lot,” Reneau said. “I
think to be able to provide something unique, to be able to
provide quality of life living in and out of here, and also
for the residents who have been here for a long time —
it’s upgrades.
“For so long the parks have needed upgrades, and this
was one that was center of town. I think it’s important for
municipalities to keep up their parks. It’s about quality of
life and getting people out and moving.”
This is just beginning. Reneau hopes that when the next
SPLOST comes, the city can dedicate even more funding
to updating their parks.
Ted Wright Park rests in the center of Warner Robins, and
is settled in the midst of a residential, walking community.
The children playing there are often ones in the immediate
43 Years
Aluminum Recycling of Warner Robins
Celebrates its 43 rd Anniversary
Serving the Warner Robins and
Middle GA Communities
In 1979 our family ventured into the business of buying aluminum
beverage cans from the public, hence the name Aluminum
Recycling of Warner Robins. We started out in a small storefront
in North Commercial Circle but quickly realized we needed more
space and built a 4000 square foot warehouse, allowing us to accept
other non-ferrous metals including copper, brass, lead, stainless
steel, insulated wire, radiators, and much more.
If you have metals left over from remodeling projects, or just
cleaning up around the house or business, rather than throwing
them away, recycle instead! Not only will you be helping the
environment, you will be earning cash too. If you are fundraising
for your favorite church, school, scout troop or charity, let us
know. We give special prices to non-profits in our community. In
addition, we welcome school groups or scout troops to schedule a
guided tour of our facilities to learn about the recycling process.
We attribute our success to our friendly, customer-oriented
atmosphere and our commitment to serving our community with
honesty and integrity. We use only NTEP certified scales, and scale
weight readouts are clearly visible to our customers. Our employees
are certified in forklift operations, trained hands-on for material
identification, and receive annual EPA training in water pollution
prevention.
