<strong>Houston</strong> <strong>County</strong> was the 51 st county formed in Georgia<br />
and was created in 1821 through a treaty signed with<br />
the Creek <strong>In</strong>dians. The county was named for Governor<br />
John Houstoun and was originally spelled "<strong>Houston</strong>." Perry,<br />
the county seat and geographic center of the state of Georgia<br />
was incorporated in 1824 as <strong>Houston</strong>'s first official town.<br />
<strong>Houston</strong> <strong>County</strong> has grown in population from 105,808<br />
in 1998 to a current population of 166,829. Thirty-seven<br />
public schools (K-12) have been recognized as Georgia<br />
Schools of Excellence and four schools have been named<br />
National Blue Ribbon Schools.<br />
<strong>Houston</strong> county is the 67 th largest county in Georgia with<br />
375.54 square miles of land. There are 75,445 acres in farm land<br />
and 94.5 % of the county is paved. The median household<br />
income is $45,263 with the average weekly wage at $590.<br />
91% of the houses are occupied out of 58,325 total housing<br />
units. On average there is $1.3 billion in retail sales.<br />
