A COMMUNITY OF THEATRE
Another theatre in Perry: The Muse. Although the building they
perform in is one of the eldest constructions, The Muse itself
has begun producing shows and holding events here just in
the last year.
Courtney and Tyler Bryant spoke on some of the theatre’s history
and what sets it apart in how they tell stories.
Built in 1950 and originally opened as a movie theatre, The Muse,
at one time, was no stranger to large audiences. After the movie
theatre closed in the 70s, however, the building stayed vacant
for quite some time, trading hands from one owner to another.
In 2021, The Muse was purchased by the Bryants and converted
into an event venue and theatre, with its original theatre
aspects still intact: the ticket booth, concession stand and
projection booth.
The Muse Theatre is now the Art Deco marvel of Commerce
Street, and hosts weddings, concerts, performances — not
to mention the murder mystery shows written, directed and
often performed in by Tyler Bryant.
In the last year, Bryant has produced a number of murder
mysteries that have been performed at The Muse. His shows
are unique in that he writes the beginning and end, but leaves
the middle open for his actors to improv through. Theres is
often a show full of laughs, twists and turns, keynoted with
audience participation as well as a dinner that comes with
your ticket.
When asked what guides his storytelling, Bryant said he asks
three questions.
“Is it relatable? Is it believable? And is it also fun?” Bryant asked.
“I want my patrons to have a fun time and forget about life for a
little bit, and just enjoy two hours of awesome entertainment,
whether it be music, the acting, whatever it may be — I want
them to enjoy the ride.”
