DIGITAL TOURS OF PERRY
TRY DIGITAL TOURS OF PERRY
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILL OLIVER, MANAGING EDITOR
HAVE YOU FOUND YOURSELF
near the City of Perry and looking for
something to pass the time?
Look no further than the self-guided
digital tours offered by a partnership
between the Perry Convention and Visitors
Bureau and the Perry Area Historical
Society featuring the city’s historic
downtown landmarks, churches around the
city as well as notable homes.
Becky Wilson of the Perry CVB said
they began the tours in a driving-friendly
format, featuring landmarks with signs
nearby containing a QR code to scan
and receive more information on the
structure’s historical significance. Other
documentation was available containing
information as well.
There have been moves made towards
featuring a digital tour ran through the
CVB website.
This digital option also means one can
access the tour from anywhere, including
from their computer at home. Photo
and video options give users a unique
perspective as compared to the previous
version of the tour.
“It allowed us to put in historical photos,”
Wilson said. “When you’re looking at that
house, you can see what it looked like 100
years ago.”
Some of the notable landmarks, in
Wilson’s opinion, included the area
where Houston High School used to be
located near Lumpkin’s
Shell Station. While that
building is not there
anymore, the tour was
able to feature past
photos of the building,
principal and the
football team.
Another local house and its backyard were
where SSS Tonic was concocted. That
tonic is still sold and used to this day.
She said a couple had, at one point,
come into the Welcome Center looking
for something to pass the time in Perry.
Wilson sent them on their way with the
tour, and the feedback was positive.
Other feedback has been positive, and
Wilson said they hope to add more content
to the website as it becomes available.
“We looked into doing the website
because we could add things and adjust
without having to put everything into
print,” Wilson said. “We felt like that was
a move toward the future.”
