5. Great is the danger when the heart, here called the castle, which should<br />

rich and prosperous without entertaining these Diabolonians--profusion,<br />

prodigality, pride, &c.! <strong>The</strong>se are more destructive to the soul than an<br />

12. Election-doubters are the devil's life-guard. When the will, strengthened<br />

by faith, attacks them, they are put into disorder, but not destroyed.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se doubts are first attacked, for until they are routed the soul has no<br />

13. <strong>The</strong> presence of the Lord decides the contest. Doubts and fears cannot<br />

stand before the gracious manifestation of himself to the soul. 'But if<br />

Emmanuel's face appear, My hope, my joy begins; His name forbids my<br />

slavish fear, His grace removes my sins.'--Burder.<br />

14. How gladly is Jesus received! None but those who have experienced it<br />

can tell how delightful and welcome is his presence to the soul that has<br />

long been vexed with an army of doubts. O let us beware of sin and<br />

unbelief, which caused him to withdraw and the doubts to enter. Well<br />

may the soul be humbled in the dust in the recollection of its<br />
