WHAT’S ON WHERE
Tips for toy safety
this Christmas
With the festive season upon us,
many children have already started
their letters to Father Christmas. But,
in the middle of all the unwrapping
and excitement, give a thought to
toy safety. Here are some top tips
from our public health (school)
nurses:
When you’re buying toys, make
sure you go to recognised outlets
as toy sales are governed by strict
regulations. At this time of year, lots
of novelty Christmas decorations
are on sale that look like toys, which
are not covered by the same rules.
Watch out for small parts and sharp
edges.
Supervise children closely when
they’re playing – while a toy may
be age appropriate for one child,
younger siblings could end up
choking on small parts or hurting
themselves.
Many toys need the small, round
‘button’ batteries to work. These
can be extremely dangerous if
swallowed or inserted into an ear.
If you think a child has swallowed
a button battery, follow this
advice from the Child Accident
PreventionTrust:
• Go straight to the Accident and
Emergency department at your
local hospital or dial 999 for an
ambulance
• Tell the doctor there that you
think your child has swallowed a
button battery
• If you have the battery packaging
or the product powered by the
battery, take it with you. This will
help the doctor identify the type
of battery and will make treatment
easier
• Don’t let your child eat or drink
anything
• Don’t make them sick
• Trust your instincts and act fast –
do not wait to see if any symptoms
develop
How can more children
get closer to nature?
Enabling children to be closer
to nature, especially by learning
and exploring in wooded areas
and forests, was recognised as
a key action in the government’s
25-year Environment Plan,
published earlier this year. Yet
despite the well-proven benefits
of children spending regular time
outdoors—including health and
wellbeing, attitudes to learning, and
environmental awareness—there
is poor understanding about the
current level of outdoor activities
for young people across
England, particularly in
wooded areas and forests.
The Bringing Children Closer to
Nature survey aims to explore
barriers and opportunities to
activities in wooded areas and
forests, including the practice of
Forest School, and it will quantify
any issues preventing
development and growth.
Its three main aims are to:
1. Acquire basic information,
including the number and
distribution of schools and other
organisations who do forest
education activities including
Forest School, and the levels
of training and skills among
Coca Cola Christmas Truck Tour
practitioners;
2. Understand more about barriers
and opportunities to establishing
and sustaining forest education,
including Forest School, among
host organisations (e.g. schools,
early years nurseries) and
practitioners, and explore how
these could be overcome;
3. Explore potential interest among
woodland owners in providing
greater access to woodland sites to
support forest education, including
Forest School.
The survey was launched in
November 2018 and will remain
open until the end of the
year. Research outcomes will
summarised in a freely-accessible
report in early 2019. Those people
interested in taking the survey can
read more and follow a link to it
There’s glimpses of what Santa gets up to in this selection,
not to mention how to use a strange gift and a warning to
beware of odd invitations. Lots of fun!
Read
Santa’s Wonderful Workshop
Elys Dolan (Oxford, £6.99)
When Santa learns next year will
be the busiest yet he knows he
has to make early preparations.
Luckily February sees the arrival
of some old friends from the South Pole to help,
although the elves say they are making more trouble
than toys. So Barry is put in charge of the penguins
and Santa takes time off to join the reindeer’s
S Indicates a book is part of a series
Debbie
dance troop. This leaves the elves to try some new creations which
leave Santa less than enthusiastic. Problems continue throughout the year
such as the break down of the Present-O-Matic, then the heating leaving
everyone with ‘flu and many helpers are arrested in October. Despite all this,
everything is ready for the big night — or is it? You will have to read this
hilarious, madcap picture book to find out. The written story is lots of fun,
with loads of interesting characters including mischievous penguins, tutu
wearing reindeers and a less than responsible Santa. To add to that each
double page shows a scene full of different activities providing lots to discuss
and making you want to keep returning to it to find out more.
Lavinia and the Magic Ring
Bianca Pitzorno (Catnip, £5.99)
Poor Lavinia, cold and hungry, trying to make a living on
the streets selling matches but being abused or ignored.
Awoken at midnight from a foody dream by a beautiful
lady who asked for a light, Lavinia lit a match for her even
without being paid. The woman turned out to be a fairy
who wanted to Primary repay Lavinia’s Times kindness Hertfordshire
with a magic ring.
Her excitement dwindled when told the ring didn’t grant
wishes, just turned things into poo! What good was that? The fairy told her
it would be very useful if she used her intelligence, and, with thought, that’s
just what she did, completely changing her life. However she took things too
far. See how she used her powers and how it led to a possible disaster in this
thought provoking story full of funny moments with some serious undertones.
Medium length novel with fair size print and some pictures.
Winnie and Wilbur: The Santa Surprise
Laura Owen/ Korky Paul (Oxford Hb, £8.99) S
While writing her letter to Santa, Winnie starts to wonder
who gives him presents. Unable to think of anyone she
decides it is up to her and Wilbur. Enlisting the help of
local school children and the school secretary for ideas,
they soon have lots of presents for Santa, but how to
get them to him? Using all her ingenuity and a touch of
magic, Winnie, Wilbur and a homesick polar bear (don’t
ask!) set off in a flying train for the Pole. What could possibly
go wrong? Well, knowing Winnie and the chaos that usually surrounds her,
quite a lot! See what occurs in this latest hilarious, reckless adventure with
my favourite well meaning, nutty witch. Large print and colourful, lively
pictures on every page make this perfect for beginner readers, but great for
all abilities.
Skycircus - Peter Bunzl (Usborne, £6.99)
Sad that her father thinks a business party is more important
than her birthday, Lily can’t resist an intriguing invitation to a
Skycircus show. Her enjoyment of the acts, especially to see
other hybrids perform, is short lived when it becomes obvious
this is a trap and she, Robert and Malkin are kidnapped by
an old foe. Seeing how badly all the performers are treated
by the horrible owners, the friends wonder what they plan
for Lily and are horrified when it is clear her life is in danger.
They need to escape, but it is a race against time and they will need all the
help they can get, but will they be able to get the performers, both hybrid and
human, onside? This latest Cogheart Adventure is another exciting read, full of
gripping twists and turns. You don’t have to have read the others to enjoy this
one. It might make you think about how you look at others, especially those
who are different in some way. Full length novel.
Personalised support for
your quiet child
Schools are such busy places and
classrooms are extremely busy places
and sometimes quite noisy, especially
with over 25 children all wanting the
teacher’s attention. It’s where the
noisiest, loudest children get the most
attention for their behaviour and the
quiet ones can feel overwhelmed and
a little lost. Does this sound like your
child? Some children worry so much
about asking for help or being seen
to need support. They may simply try
to be invisible. Bright children often
cope perfectly well by themselves
but most children would do so much
better with someone being there just
for them. Here at Kip McGrath, this is
what we do. We help your child individually
– no large classes – no group
teaching. We focus on English and
Maths, starting with a free assessment
and sessions are planned around your
child’s needs and at their level. We
encourage your child to challenge
themselves as they become more
confident. We help your child develop
learning skills to cope with life in
the school classroom. Our tutors
are qualified teachers who understand
your child’s anxieties and your
concerns. Find out how Kip McGrath
could be the just what you need for
your child. Your local Centres are
Hinckley, Leicester South (Oadby) and
Loughborough. Please see our advert
