Hanukkah, and more right around the corner, it’s a wonderful 

time of year full of celebrations and cheer for the whole family. 

There are so many festive activities and events on in the 

upcoming weeks, there’s sure to be something for everyone. 

Many of these listed events are free or low cost – which might 

be especially helpful at this time of year! 

There are lots of opportunities to meet Father Christmas before 

he travels the world on Christmas Eve. Make sure you check

don’t miss him!

“Vista is one of the oldest and largest 

sight loss charities in Leicester, 

Leicestershire and Rutland. We’ve 

been working with people with 

sight loss and their families for 

over 150 years. Vista provides support 

and services to almost 12,000 children 

and adults with sight loss. As well 

as rehabilitation, social groups, and 

300 pupils in Leicester set to 

become ‘Rugby Reading Champions’ 

Jim Sells, Sport and Literacy Programme 

Manager at the National 

Literacy Trust, said: “We’ve seen 

first-hand how bringing sport into 

the classroom can level the playing 

field for children who have fallen 

behind in their reading. Rugby is 

an important part of family life in 

Leicester, so we are thrilled to be 

working with Leicester Tigers to get 

children who might otherwise be 

disengaged with reading excited 

about it. Rugby Reading Champions 

are bursting with inspirational 

materials to get children reading 

Suitable for SEN young people with 

Autism/SLD/MLD, this fully inclusive 

musical experience brings together 

different styles of music from Rock 

to Samba, Hip Hop and the spoken 

word. Each session includes playing 

a variety of instruments e.g. drums, 

keyboards and guitars. Technology 

like Ableton Push and Soundbeam is 

used to enhance the music that the 

young people create.

specialist services for people with 

learning disabilities, dementia and 

dual sensory impairment. But we need

of essential items to those in need,

Tips for toy safety 

this Christmas 

With the festive season upon us, 

many children have already started 

their letters to Father Christmas. But, 

in the middle of all the unwrapping 

and excitement, give a thought to 

toy safety. Here are some top tips 

from our public health (school) 

nurses: 

When you’re buying toys, make 

sure you go to recognised outlets 

as toy sales are governed by strict 

regulations. At this time of year, lots 

of novelty Christmas decorations 

are on sale that look like toys, which 

are not covered by the same rules. 

Watch out for small parts and sharp 

edges. 

Supervise children closely when 

they’re playing – while a toy may 

be age appropriate for one child, 

younger siblings could end up 

choking on small parts or hurting 

themselves. 

Many toys need the small, round 

‘button’ batteries to work. These 

can be extremely dangerous if 

swallowed or inserted into an ear. 

If you think a child has swallowed 

a button battery, follow this 

advice from the Child Accident 

PreventionTrust: 

• Go straight to the Accident and 

Emergency department at your 

local hospital or dial 999 for an 

ambulance 

• Tell the doctor there that you 

think your child has swallowed a 

button battery 

• If you have the battery packaging 

or the product powered by the 

battery, take it with you. This will 

help the doctor identify the type 

of battery and will make treatment 

easier 

• Don’t let your child eat or drink 

anything 

• Don’t make them sick 

• Trust your instincts and act fast – 

do not wait to see if any symptoms 

develop

get closer to nature? 

Enabling children to be closer 

to nature, especially by learning 

and exploring in wooded areas 

and forests, was recognised as 

a key action in the government’s 

25-year Environment Plan, 

published earlier this year. Yet 

despite the well-proven benefits 

of children spending regular time 

outdoors—including health and 

wellbeing, attitudes to learning, and 

environmental awareness—there 

is poor understanding about the 

current level of outdoor activities 

for young people across 

England, particularly in 

wooded areas and forests. 

The Bringing Children Closer to 

Nature survey aims to explore 

barriers and opportunities to 

activities in wooded areas and 

forests, including the practice of 

Forest School, and it will quantify 

any issues preventing 

development and growth. 

Its three main aims are to: 

1. Acquire basic information, 

including the number and 

distribution of schools and other 

organisations who do forest 

education activities including 

Forest School, and the levels 

of training and skills among

practitioners; 

2. Understand more about barriers 

and opportunities to establishing 

and sustaining forest education, 

including Forest School, among 

host organisations (e.g. schools, 

early years nurseries) and 

practitioners, and explore how

woodland owners in providing 

greater access to woodland sites to 

support forest education, including 

Forest School. 

The survey was launched in 

November 2018 and will remain 

open until the end of the 

year. Research outcomes will 

summarised in a freely-accessible 

report in early 2019. Those people

Every year Primary Times asks children 

to create the picture for our Christmas 

Card. This year we received a sack full of 

wonderful entries and we would like to 

thank you all for taking the time to draw, 

colour, paint and glitter your designs for us! 

The overall winner of the competition

Lancashire, who will receive 50 Christmas 

cards made up in her painting of a 

Christmas tree on a snowy day. We were 

also so overwhelmed by the standard of

an old foe. Seeing how badly all the performers are treated 

by the horrible owners, the friends wonder what they plan 

for Lily and are horrified when it is clear her life is in danger. 

They need to escape, but it is a race against time and they will need all the 

help they can get, but will they be able to get the performers, both hybrid and 

human, onside? This latest Cogheart Adventure is another exciting read, full of 

gripping twists and turns. You don’t have to have read the others to enjoy this 

one. It might make you think about how you look at others, especially those
