Putney Bowling Club appeals for a helping hand PUTNEY BOWLING CLUB could receive a helping hand from City of Ryde gardeners funded by a grant from Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts. Council staff will meet with club officials to discuss options for a grant funded clean up and beautification of the club’s grounds after a request was made to last Tuesday night’s council meeting from club stalwarts Ron Ryan and Dorian Guardala. “The beautification work we need is beyond the best efforts of our volunteers,” Mr Ryan said. Councillor Brown said the City of Ryde shouldn’t expect elderly bowlers to be digging up weeds. “It is a community club and like a lot of bowling clubs it is favoured by elderly members from our community,” he said. “At their age they cannot be weeding and we cannot ask them to get out there with a whipper snipper.” Questions asked by Clr Dr Peter Kim (Labor) revealed that the club’s lease does, in fact, require the club to upkeep the grounds. “Are we asking ratepayers to (spend money) to beautify a bowling club, a private business, a leasee ?” ‘‘We could open a floodgate by doing this.” Liberal Chris Moujalli took up the point. “If someone has agreed in a lease to maintain the upkeep they should keep the agreement and the points made by Clr Kim are entirely correct,” he said. “But I would be happy for our staff to assist, with funding.” City of Ryde Director (City Works) Wayne Rylands it is possible for his staff to assist and to even offer design assistance while Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM (Lib) said it is the City of Ryde’s duty to assist.
