Hot shot Healy is
Player of Twenty20
AUSTRALIAN cricket golden girls Alyssa Healy and
Ellyse Perry have stamped themselves in unique company.
The decorated superstars
covered themselves
in glory last
weekend in the Caribbean
by helping the
Southern Stars bring
home a fourth Women’s
ICC World Twenty20
championship trophy.
Both played key roles
in the Aussies crushing
eight wicket win over
England in the final at Sir
Vivian Richards Cricket
Ground in Antigua -
achieving a rare international
sporting feat.
Former Epping resident
Healy and dual international
Perry, who
are products of the Sydney
Tigers Cricket Club
based at Drummoyne,
are the only cricketers to
have figured in all four of
Australia’s World
Exciting all rounder
Ashleigh Gardner earned
the Player of the Final
award - grabbing 3-22
with the ball as the dominant
Aussies skittled
England for 105 before
posting an unbeaten 33
and combining with skipper
Meg Lanning (28 not
out) to steer the Aussies
(2-106) to an emphatic title
victory.
The flamboyant Healy
capped a memorable
2018 when she was
named Player of the
Tournament.
She proved the lynchpin
of Australia’s batting and
finished the tournament’s
top scorer with 225 runs
at an average of 56.25
and strike rate of 144.23.
The 28 year old Australian
keeper and dashing
opener finished with
four Player of the Match
awards and scores of 48
against Pakistan; 56 not
out against Ireland; 53
against New Zealand; 46
in the semi final win over
the West Indies and 22 in
the final against England.
Perry reached a record
breaking milestone in
the Cup final when she
trapped England’s Nat
Sciver in front to become
the first Australian and
second female in the
world to take 100 wickets
in Twenty20 international
cricket.
The champion all
rounder has taken her
100 wickets across 102
matches at an average of
19.19 and only trails West
Indies off-spinner Anisa
Mohammed who took
146 wickets at 19.60.
MEANWHILE Sydney
Cricket Club squandered
an opportunity to consolidate
their lead in the
2018-19 NSW Premier
Cricket mens first grade
competition.
The Tigers suffered
a first innings loss to
Sutherland last Saturday
at Glenn McGrath Oval
and have now slipped to
second spot on 26 points
behind outright leaders
Sydney University (27).
Promising leg-spinner
Daniel Fallins proved the
architect for the Sharks
with a five wicket haul
that thwarted the visitors’
bid for victory.
Resuming at 7-285, the
Sutherland side added 36
runs in the morning session
to post a total of 321
before dismissing the Tigers
for 226.
Fallins, 22, who took six
wickets in his first class
debut for the Cricket
Australia X1 against touring
England last November,
bagged 5-80 from a
marathon 25 over spell
with support from quicks
Jayden Brown (2-10 off
seven overs) and Tom
Pinson (2-65 off 12).
Talented Sydney opener
Matthew Rodgers continued
his purple form patch
with a stylish knock of 59
while all rounder Nic Bills
(48 not out), skipper Dan
Smith (25) and keeper
Beau McClintock also
made valuable contributions.
Earlier in the day, under
rated Sydney all rounder
Ryan Felsch finished with
5-76 off 20 overs.
Steel Cage Wrestling Lockout
Flamboyant Australian keeper batter and former Epping resident Alyssa Healy receives her ICC World
Twenty20 Player of the Tourenament award from West Indies cricketing great Sir Vivian Richards after the
Southern Stars crushing championship win over England in the final in Antigua last weekend.
Sydney FC looking
to bolster firepower
SYDNEY FC is looking to lift its game in front of goal after its recent
slim pickings in the goal-scoring department during the early stages of its
2018/19 A-League campaign.
Coach Steve Corica is on
the lookout for a speedy
striker that can make a habit
of finding the back of the
net - preferably on board
with the Sky Blues in times
for the start of his side’s
Asian Champions League
campaign.
Sydney FC’s early unbeaten
run came to a grinding
halt on the weekend when
its “Mexican” rivals Melbourne
Victory, took out the
first ‘Big Blue’ of the season
2-1.
On a positive note - a
sell-out bumper crowd of
19,081 got acquainted with
temporary home ground,
Jubilee Stadium in Kogarah.
While the Sky Blues are
pulling their weight in possession,
Corica conceded
his side needed to threaten
its opponents in attack
much more, revealing he’s
in the hunt for another goal
poacher.
“We would’ve like to have
threatened more. I think we
threatened a lot more than
what they did. The scoreline
doesn’t show that,” Corica
said.
And while the A-League’s
title heavyweight still boasts
a goal difference that ranks
it among the top handful of
sides in this season’s competition,
Corica has kept a
keen eye on adding to his
strike force.
The club hasn’t yet signed
a replacement for Trent Buhagiar,
who rocketed into
first-team contention during
the pre-season but tragically
fell victim to an ACL injury
on the eve of round one.
Buhagiar led the team’s
goalscoring tally during the
FFA Cup, while star import
Siem de Jong has also had
to settle for an extended
stint on the sideline due to
a hamstring injuryalso remains
sidelined with a hamstring
injury.
“We’ve got a little bit of
time before January, but
we’ve already started looking
and there’s a few options
at the moment,” Corica
said.
“Buhagiar… was a big
threat with his pace. If we
can find someone like that,
that’d be great,” Corica
said, refusing to make excuses
for his team’s second
straight loss to their arch
rivals.
And he insisted Jop Van
Der Linden would learn
from the “brainsnap” that
resulted in the penalty that
ultimately eventual gamewinner.
The pressure will be on
the Sky Blues to get back
into winning mode when it
travels up the F3 for Saturday’s
away clash with
bottom-of-the-table Central
Coast Mariners.
