Newly found JAM Orchestra to debut Dec. 1
Holiday concert will
feature 30-piece
orchestra
Martin Carlino, Editor
Justin Kono, Aaron Kaplan
and Michael Goldman
all share a vision of
providing musical excellence
to audiences. The trio
that has played together for
years believes it has found
the epitome of that mutual
artistic vision — JAM Orchestra.
Named after the firstname
initials of its three
founding members, JAM
strives to present highquality
music to audiences,
the way it was originally
intended to be heard.
“Aaron, Justin, and I
have always enjoyed playing
music together,” Goldman
says in a press release.
“I think the three of us
share a very strong musical
bond. … I couldn’t think
of a better way to encompass
our friendship mixed
with our passion for what
we do.”
The newly found orchestra
intends to perform a variety
of works, from classical
music, to Broadway
NOTICE OF PROPOSED PROPERTY TAX LEVY FOR
THE VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK
I. A public hearing to approve a proposed property tax levy for the
Village of Northbrook for 2018 will be held on December 11, 2018
at 7:30 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Lane,
Northbrook, Illinois.
Any person desiring to appear at the public hearing and present testimony
to the taxing district may contact Jeff Rowitz, Deputy Village
Manager/CFO, 1225 Cedar Lane, Northbrook, Illinois 60062, (847)
272-5050.
and film scores. The intent
to perform a range of works
with the highest possible
quality is one of the characteristics
the founders believe
makes them unique.
“I think what makes us
unique is that we take all the
music that we want to do
and we take it serious and
we do it with integrity,” said
Kaplan, who’s a resident of
Northbrook. “And we study
it in a scholarly way.
“And not only do we
treat this music on equal
footing … we want to
make sure that it’s presented
to the audience so that
they are getting the original
experience.”
The orchestra will present
its inaugural concert
“Holiday Swing” at 7:30
p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at
the Skokie Theatre, 7924
N. Lincoln Ave.
The concert will feature
a 30-piece orchestra
performing music from
“The Polar Express,” “The
Christmas Song,” Duke
Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s
jazz setting of the
“Nutcracker Suite,” and
songs from “White Christmas,”
according to the release.
“It sort of embodies a
little bit of everything that
we want to try to hit on,”
Kaplan said.
Kaplan continued to say
the concert will “have a
little bit of everything, all
centered around a holiday
theme.”
Tickets for the performance
are $25 and available
at the door or at skokietheatre.org.
The founding trio of
JAM hopes this concert is
the beginning of a long run
of success.
According to Kaplan, the
hope is for the orchestra to
get to the point of approximately
five performances
a year, all of which would
feature a different repertoire
of music.
But before fully setting
sights on the future, Kaplan,
a graduate of Glenbrook
North High School
in 2007, can’t help but look
back at his musical upbringing.
“[My time at GBN] is
incredibly meaningful to
me,” said Kaplan, who is
now the assistant orchestra
director at Glenbrook
North and South. “I was
given so many … opportunities
as a student and that’s
what really set me off in my
course to major in music in
college and become a music
teacher.”
