Alexa Burnell Freelance Reporter Wood Oaks seventhgrade students took time out of their day Nov. 15, engaging in a series of workshops where they learned to understand, embrace and celebrate other’s unique differences. The school’s communications director, Gail Kahover, explained how this long-standing, seventhgrade tradition, positively impacts students, teaching them to think outside of themselves. “Wood Oaks has run this program for many years and while the topics may slightly change, the message is the same – we must all learn to accept and celebrate differences,” Kahover said. “It’s important to take time out and teach students what it feels like to walk in someone else’s shoes.” Students in Anna Janiga’s class learned about the challenges those who speak a foreign language face. Janiga, immigrated to the United States from Poland when she was 26 years old and the road to assimilate was often met with challenges. She taught students how it felt when others couldn’t understand her. “I often felt embarrassed and stupid. I felt like a truly didn’t belong,” Janiga explained. “But I persevered, went to Truman College and learned how to speak English.” To prove her point, Janiga read articles from Polish newspapers in her native tongue. Then, she read a children’s book, again all in Polish. When she asked the students to explain how they felt when she was speaking all in her native language, many said, confused, disengaged, lost, and unable to focus. Janiga then gave students a tip to use when they meet someone who doesn’t speak any English at all. “Remember, a smile is a universal language,” Janiga said. “Next time you meet someone who doesn’t speak English, remember just how confused and overwhelmed you felt, because that is what they are experiencing. While you may not be able to understand their spoken word, a sincere smile goes a long way in making someone feel comfortable.” Next, down the hall in Elyse Rubin’s science class, students discussed learning struggles such as dyslexia. To drive the point home, Rubin asked her students to put a sock on their dominant hand and begin writing specific assignments with their nondominant hand. Next, students were asked to write their names, again with their non-dominant hand, and while viewing their work in a mirror. The students were surprised at how difficult the process was, gaining valuable insight along the way. “This was a really hard assignment and I can’t believe that some kids have to deal with this every day and in all aspects of their lives,” Jada Glazebrook said. Paige Gochis added: “You realize how difficult it must be for a student who has a dyslexia or any learning difference. Photos Submitted Science teacher Elyse Rubin teaches kids how to have empathy for those who with different abilities function how many of the rest of us function without even thinking about it.” While Rubin taught students about understanding learning differences, her counterpart, Mary-Lou Gilliam, a retired teacher who returns each year to help with the program, complimented Rubin’s message by teaching students how to see things from new perspectives. She showed the students a variety of images, sharing their perceptions, while opening each other’s eyes to a new way of seeing the same thing. Students also learned how it feels for those who may be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism, Sensory Processing Disorders and more. The morning seminars concluded with a lecture by motivational speaker, Lloyd Bachrach, who taught students that the most meaningful successes in life come from overcoming adversity, leaving students like Brianna Owen inspired. “Today has been a real eye-opening experience,” Owen said. “I’ve learned that I can help others who are struggling by advocating for them and letting them know I support them and understand. It is so easy to take things for granted, but today we’ve all learned that many people struggle every day and that we should all be more understanding and open to seeing things from other’s perspectives.”
