26 | November 29, 2018 | The Northbrook tower school northbrooktower.com New Maple School taking shape as crews prepare for winter Submitted Content Before the Northbrook/ Glenview School District 30 Board of Education met for its regular meeting Oct. 25, Superintendent Dr. Brian Wegley, Board President Chuck Gitles, Arcon’s Rick Cozzi and Jeff Zurlinden of Nicholas and Associates led a tour of the new 111,000-square-foot Maple School. Village representatives including Northbrook Chief of Police Roger Adkins, Northbrook Village Board President Sandy Frum and Trustees A.C. Buehler III and Jason Han, Northbrook Park District Board of Commissioners President Penny Randel, and other local officials also tagged along for a sneak peek at the new school. “We are maximizing our use of space in the new school, and there will be natural light in all of the classrooms,” Wegley said. It is a wonderful space for kids and teachers.” Cozzi explained that construction on the new Maple Middle School has been progressing well assuring everyone that key components are to getting the building enclosed before winter weather arrives are on schedule.” Jeff Zurlinden, project manager at Nicholas and Associates, said exterior masonry was completed by before the Oct. 25 tour, and exterior glazing was completed in mid-November. Roofing on the new school is expected to be completed by the end of November. Electric, gas and heating will also be in place by the end of November to ensure there is heat in the building throughout the winter. Photos submitted three-story portion of the building has 95 percent of the mechanical systems installed and will soon be ready for drywall to begin, according to school district officials. The center portion of the building is 60 percent completed with rough mechanical systems. “Up and coming will be the completion of the exterior envelope of the building, and the preparation of the building for the winter months,” Zurlinden said. Wegley thanked everyone for coming and expressed his appreciation. “We benefit from the great working relationships and closeness that we have with our village neighbors and representatives. You will all be invited back for another tour in the winter, and I assure you that the building will be warm,” Wegley said with a smile. Snowshoe-making workshop helps D28 students develop lifelong skills Submitted by District 28 What does it take to make a pair of snowshoes? Four pieces of specially bent white ash wood strips, about 140 feet of lacing, and knots — lots of knots. Greenbriar physical education teachers Bill Norris and Tim Zinanni are hosting a before-school workshop for parents and students to make snowshoes. Students measure and mark the wooden frames exactly where the lacing should be spaced in order to hold their weight in the snow. Then, they cut the lacing and weave it into an intricate pattern of knots to create the webbing. When the weaving was complete, they use a woodburning tool to add their names or decoration. Then the snowshoes are varnished for durability. Once leather bindings are attached, the snowshoes are ready for snow. About 15 students and their parents have been toiling away in the early morning hours for the past several weeks. “They’re learning patience. They’re learning patterns,” Zinanni said. Thomas Hendrickson and his grandfather, Bruce Boudreaux, show the snowshoes they made together in a before-school workshop at Greenbriar School. “There is no instant gratification. This is an opportunity to get students to work with their hands and change raw materials into something that can last a lifetime.” And if the early cold weather is any sign, there will be plenty of opportunities this winter to use them. From 1-3 p.m., guests of all ages can participate in a volunteer project helping those in need, while also enjoying holiday crafts, activities, and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Guests at the event can help pack “blessing bags” of everyday essentials that will be distributed to individuals through Project I Am and the YWCA Evanston/North Shore. Project I Am provides the blessing bags to homeless individuals in Chicagoland, and the YWCA’s Domestic Violence Programming delivers to individuals and families dealing with abuse across the entire Northeastern Metropolitan Chicago Area. Throughout the month of November, the NSYM- CA will be collecting personal necessities like travel-size toiletries, granola bars, socks and other items to fill the blessing bags. Local businesses like Northwestern Medicine and Yummy Dental of Glenview have already donated items including bandages, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. In addition to the service opportunity, the Holiday Giveback Event will offer other activities to put guests in a festive mood. Children can participate in an art project, cookie decorating, or enjoy a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Photos with be available throughout the event to encourage kids to be extra nice throughout the season. DJs from Bach to Rock will keep the atmosphere upbeat with holiday music favorites. The NSYMCA’s Holiday Giveback event is open to the public and free of charge. Registration is recommended.
