Side Trips
I’m not certain that I would enjoy warm
weather during the holidays, but I think I’m
willing to give it a try. As a kid, playing in
the snow is a wonderful adventure; as an adult
the reality of “white
Christmas” often comes
with travel woes and
frustrations.
Our family spent the
week of Thanksgiving
in Maui, where
the Christmas décor
went up at our hotel
during our stay and
the shopping village
just down the street
was all decked out in
lights and garland. As
has been my tradition
MYRNA
WAGNER
while preparing turkey and all the sides from
my home kitchen, we didn’t watch the Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade this year, but went
on a snorkeling adventure instead. When the
boat captain wished us a happy Thanksgiving,
I did a double take. I had forgotten.
“Just another day in paradise,” the captain
said. He also told me he was born and raised in
Hawaii, so sunny and 85 does equate with the
holidays for him.
Not the same with a few servers and store
clerks I spoke with. Most were Midwest transplants,
living a tropical lifestyle for the past two
or three years, and several were ready to return
to the Midwest.
“I miss the cold,” one said, and another
shared, “This was awesome for a while, but it’s
time to go home.”
When we sat down to dinner Thanksgiving
night, a traditional turkey dinner was the featured
special. It just didn’t sound quite right. I
asked about the catch of the day instead. When
in Hawaii, eat mahi-mahi.
And embrace the beautiful weather, no matter
the season.
The show must go on
Off, Off Broadway brings comedy to the stage Dec. 6-9
Ashton is 1,316 miles from New
York City. But Off, Off Broadway
is aiming to bring a little
Broadway fun to Iowa with its upcoming
production of Neil Simon’s “The
Sunshine Boys.”
“The Sunshine Boys” is set to be on
stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Sunday,
Dec. 6-9, at the Ashton Legion Community
Center.
The evening will begin at 5:30 with
a meal catered by 1015 Steak Company
in Sibley. Audience members
receive their choice of prime rib, pork
loin or swai for the meal. Tickets are
$26.
The show is about the friendship
and falling out of Al Lewis and Willie
Clark. They were two vaudevillian
comedians who were a successful duo
for 43 years. Eventually, Lewis decided
to retire and left Clark struggling to
keep his career alive.
The show begins 11 years after their
falling out.
“My character, Ben Silverman, is the
nephew of Willie Clark. CBS wants to
do a history of comedy retrospective
with Lewis and Clark and it’s my job
to talk them into doing it,” said Scott
De Kok, who is an actor in “The Sunshine
Boys” and serves on the Off, Off
Broadway board of directors. “When
we get the two of them together is
when the fun really starts.”
A 1975 film based on the play
starred Walter Matthau as Willy Clark,
George Burns as Al Lewis and Richard
Benjamin as Ben Silverman.
“The Sunshine Boys” has much in
common with another of Matthau’s
most famous films, according to De
Kok.
“If you like the movie ‘Grumpy
Old Men’ then you’ll like this show
because we have two very grumpy old
men,” De Kok said with a laugh.
The eight-member cast has been
rehearsing for a few months and before
rehearsals started they came to a
unique decision. They were not going
to appoint a director for the show.
“It’s such a different play in that
three people have most of the lines.
I’ve been involved with Off, Off
Broadway for several years now and
have been in many shows with both
John Jinkinson who’s playing Willie
Clark and King Hickman who’s
playing Al Lewis,” De Kok said. “In
the end, we decided that between all
of us we’d been in a million of these
shows so we said, ‘Let’s just direct each
other.’”
He said the cast is having a great
time rehearsing together, but they are
anxious to bring the show to the stage.
“We just like to make people laugh.
We would love it if people leave with a
smile on their face and when they see
us a few days later they tell us that that
one part really made them laugh,” De
Kok said. “Then it’s all worth it. We
don’t get paid. We are just in it for the
laughs.” F
‘Almost, Maine’
Spencer Community Theatre opens new show Dec. 7
Love can be lost and love can be
found. It can be new or old. It can
be uncomfortable or unrequited.
“Almost, Maine” explores all these
aspects of love and many more as the
next play on the docket for Spencer
Community Theatre.
Performances are scheduled at 7:30
p.m. on Dec. 7-8, 14-15, and at 2 p.m.
on Dec. 9 and 16. Tickets range from
$18 for adults and $9 for students.
Liz McNea, who directed “White
Christmas” last year and has choreographed
several SCT productions the
past couple years, is back at the helm
for “Almost, Maine.”
The play, written by John Cariani,
debuted in 2004 and has been the
most produced play in North American
high schools several different
years since then.
“This one really just has a super big
heart,” McNea said. “It’s been super
popular in high schools and colleges.
It’s different. It’s a really, really good
script that is very endearing without
being cheesy.”
It is set in the mythical town of
Almost, ME, in the heart of winter
and explores the many aspects of love
through nine short vignettes.
Everything is happening at the same
time under the same skies containing
the aurora borealis.
While the characters never overlap
on stage from vignette to vignette,
they do mention each other as well as
town business establishments occasionally
in passing references providing
a sense of the community at large.
“It’s interesting to see how these
characters fit together and how they
build on each other, which is so
amazing because they don’t all appear
together on stage,” McNea said “It’s
also considered an absurdist piece,
and every vignette has a physicality to
it in some way.”
One powerful example is a vignette
in which an older couple is looking
for a shoe. Their differing methods
of searching indicate the ways they
no longer connect with each other
despite still loving each other. While
waiting and searching the shoe eventually
drops from the sky.
“It’s incredibly cleverly and authentically
written,” McNea said. “I hope
for anyone seeing it that they are able
to recognize themselves at least once
because these are all universal parts of
love, which is the theme that binds it
all together.”
McNea is directing a few new faces
on stage for “Almost, Maine” and said
it’s been a complete delight.
“It’s super exciting to see new people
and it was a joy to pick this cast
and see their chemistry develop,” Mc-
Nea said. “This really has been a gem
to me and it really does shine because
they have invested so much time and
prep work, it’s beautiful.”
Part of the joy of live theater is
watching actors breathe life into characters
right before your very eyes. With
“Almost, Maine” there are new characters
to get to know every few minutes
and each vignette takes the audience
on its own journey all while serving
the overarching theme of love.
It’s a show both loyal theatregoers
and new visitors to SCT won’t want to
miss. F
Holiday dance
performance in
Orange City on
Friday, Dec. 7
Christmas is a time for nostalgia.
It’s a time for Bing Crosby, Fred
Astaire and Danny Kaye to tap
dance through a Christmas wonderland
and dazzle us with fancy
footwork.
If you’re in the mood for a little nostalgia
along these lines then Orange
City Arts has you covered.
Happy Holidays with Two on Tap,
a tap dancing duo, will be onstage at
the Unity
Christian
Knight Center in Orange City at 7:30
p.m. Friday, Dec. 7.
“It’s almost going to be like a carol
sing. They pull out all of the American
holiday classics — all the old songs
we know,” said Lindsay Bauer, the
executive director of Orange City Arts.
“They are virtuosic performers. It’s
kind of a whimsical romp through
Christmas songs with tap dancing.”
The duo behind Two on Tap is
Melissa Giattino and Ron DeStefano.
The pair debuted with Two on Tap in
2010.
“Melissa Giattino and Ron DeStefano
were both working together as
dancers on Broadway. Melissa was
a Rockette. They realized they had
something great together
so they decided to start
Two on Tap,” Bauer said.
“For the past eight years
they’ve been performing
all over the world. Their
mission is to revitalize
this old dance form —
tap dancing and tap
duos. It’s a throwback to
Fred Astaire and Ginger
Rogers when they were
on the silver screen.
Along with the nostalgia
that goes along with that
they have updated it for a
modern audience.”
In addition to seeing
these two Broadway
performers up on stage,
people who attend the
performance will also
be lucky enough to spot
Tap dancing duo Two on Tap features
Melissa Giattino and Ron
Destafano. They are both Broadway
performers who decided to
team up and tour together as
some familiar faces.
“Two on Tap will be performing
their opening number with some of
our local dance students,” Bauer said.
“We contacted the local dance studios
and had them submit students. They
will learn and dance and perform a
song with Melissa and Ron at the beginning
of the show.”
Enjoying a night of nostalgia mixed
with modern touches is just the ticket
to kick off the Christmas season. And
Bauer is a big fan of the holiday.
“I am super into Christmas. I’m
inappropriately obsessed with Christmas,”
Bauer said with a laugh. “I get
so much joy out of the traditions and
the sparkle and generous spirit that
comes over everyone.”
“My hope is that the audience, after
having this experience with Two on
Tap, is that they feel even a little bit of
the joy of the Christmas season — of
the feeling of togetherness. Then I will
feel like we have done a good thing.” F
It’s almost going
to be like a carol
sing. They pull
out all of the
American holiday
classics — all
the old songs
we know. They
are virtuosic
performers.
It’s kind of a
whimsical romp
through Christmas
songs with tap
dancing.
‘TIS THE SEASON
Rhythmic Circus to perform
When the Rhythmic Circus
comes to Worthington on
Dec. 8 to perform their Holiday
Shuffle show, it’s going to be a
not-so-silent night.
The internationally known music
and dancing ensemble has performed
in more than 250 cities around the
world as well as at The Kennedy Center
and on Broadway. And they’ll be
coming to Worthington’s Memorial
Auditorium at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.
They’ve been performing for over a
decade and were even featured on the
reality television show “America’s Got
Talent.”
Ever since Tammy Makram had
the chance to see them perform she’s
wanted to bring them to Worthington.
“I was lucky enough to see them
perform at the Paramount in St. Paul
about two years ago. It was one of the
most amazing shows I have ever seen.
They got three standing ovations and
that was just during the show itself,”
said Makram, the executive director of
then that I wanted to bring that show
to Worthington.”
Thanks to a Minnesota State Arts
Board touring grant the show will
make its stop in Worthington.
“We are super excited to be a part
of this Minnesota tour grant. Minnesota
is home base for us and we
were founded in Minneapolis and we
actually started with a similar grant
from the state of Minnesota,” said
Nick Bowman, the executive director
and co-founder of Rhythmic Circus.
“We’ve performed
all
around the
it feels like we
and honored to
be a part of this
and we are having a blast.”
The group features four dancers and
seven musicians.
While they tour with a number of
shows, the Rhythmic Circus’s Holiday
Shuffle is a treat to be enjoyed by
people of all ages.
“This is a brand new production
this year. It’s full of holiday music that
people know and love. From the classics
like ‘Joy to the World’ and ‘Linus
and Lucy’ — we have a laundry lists
of tunes that have been remixed and
updated with our own arrangements.
They are engaging and fresh and at the
same time the songs that people know
and love.”
As is usual for events at the Memorial
Auditorium Performing Arts Center the
fun will start an hour before the performance
with a social hour with live
music provided by pianist Kurt Haag.
After two years of wanting to bring
this show to Worthington, Makram
can’t wait for the audience to experience
the Rhythmic Circus for themselves.
“It’s going to be such an uplifting
show. The audience is going to leave
feeling they are walking a foot off the
a laugh. “It’s a great way to get into
such incredibly talented dancers and
musicians.” F
Damon, Dave and Ryan team up
Trio of musicians all set for another holiday show
It may be getting colder outside but
one of the hottest tickets in the Iowa
Great Lakes is on sale right now.
The Damon, Dave and Ryan Holiday
Show has sold out every show
in its decade-plus run at the Pearson
Lakes Art Center.
This year figures to be no different
as the trio brings its musical talents
and tremendous chemistry to the
stage once again.
Slated for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec.
8, tickets are $30 for nonmembers of
the art center, $20 for members and
$15 for students.
If you’re not a first-name basis with
these popular area musicians they are
Damon Dotson, Dave Rowley and
Ryan Sather, who perform numerous
times locally throughout the summer
as solo artists and in other duos and
ensembles.
The holiday season, however, is the
one time each year they come together
to entertain an audience with a set
list full of Christmas favorites, original
songs and plenty of other familiar hits
to entertain one and all.
Originally it was set up as a concert
for Dotson and Rowley to play.
“But we needed something more
and Ryan’s performed with Damon
and with me and so Damon came
up and we jammed together,” Rowley
said. “It was just the three of us those
first couple years.”
Sather remembers it a tad bit differently.
“Dave just thought it would always
be cool to do a concert with Damon
and I said, ‘What the heck?’” Sather
joked. “So it was Damon and Dave
with special guest Ryan Sather in
small letters. Really, I was just honored
for them to even ask. I thought it
would be so awesome.”
Apparently audiences have agreed
as they keep turning out year after
year.
The variety of the set list was originally
borne out of necessity.
“We had booked this before
Thanksgiving originally so it was a
holiday concert, not just Christmas,
and we had to be creative,” Rowley
said. “We also had the benefit of being
the first people out of the gate doing
holiday songs and the audience loved
it. The people were ready and hadn’t
already heard all the Christmas songs
ad nauseam.”
More than a decade in, now they
change up the set list out of a different
kind of necessity.
“We have a lexicon of about 30-40
songs to choose from and some perennial
favorites that are hard to let
go. We’ve done ‘Celebrate Me Home’
by Kenny Loggins every year and absolutely
love it,” Rowley said.
He added that they always have a
few extras on the back burner just in
case.
During the two brief practices
they get before the show, they’ll run
through ideas about what songs to
add or subtract from the set list.
“We’re trying to keep things fresh
and new and at the same time just
whatever feels good, so we start
practicing and just say, ‘What do you
think, in or out?’” Sather said. “Dave
really has a talent for finding cool
music that is new to us.”
Ryan is responsible for taking a new
song on the set list and creating an arrangement
that works for the trio.
There have been jazzy versions of
“Jingle Bells” and a reggae mashup
of “Winter Wonderland” and “Don’t
Worry Be Happy.” And they fit perfectly
well right alongside stalwart
holiday classics such as “What Child
is This?” and “Silent Night.”
Last year Rowley wrote a new
original song, “Christmas and Fond
Memories,” just a couple weeks before
the concert.
They also mix it up by inviting other
musicians to join in the fun. They’ve
had locals like Joe Cuttell and Brian
Moore join them for the holiday show.
Just last year, Adam Layman filled
in for Damon Dotson who couldn’t
make it as he and wife were expecting
a child at the time.
“Musicians are very much drawn to
playing with other musicians. It’s really
great. And Adam did an awesome
job filling in last year,” Sather said.
Damon is back this year and it’s a
mystery as to who else might join the
venerable trio on stage.
No matter what, they’re sure to
draw a crowd. Rowley says the draw is
Damon Dotson. Sather says the draw
is Dave Rowley.
Whatever or whoever the draw, this
is truly a great group of musicians enjoying
themselves and having a great
time putting on a fantastic show for
their audience.
“It’s the holidays! We have a great
crowd and we’re cutting loose and having
fun, that’s basically it,” Rowley said.
“We all genuinely love doing this
holiday concert,” Sather added. “I feel
very lucky and honored to be able to
do it and that people want to hear us
again and again.” F
Growing tradition
Tannenbaum Christmas Tree Farm spreads cheer
The Scotch pine is king of the Christmas
trees.
At Tannenbaum Christmas Tree Farm in
Milford that statement holds true with white
pine coming in second place as far as popularity.
It was 30 years ago that those two tree species
were first planted on the farm by owners
Dave and Marcia Stoever. That first batch grew
for about six years before being harvested. They
have since expanded from those original 1,000
trees to about 6,000 across six acres.
They’ve also added Fraser
fir, concolor fir, and
Colorado blue spruce to
their Christmas tree inventory.
They continue to plant
1,000 trees each year to keep
a consistent rotation of their
inventory.
Initiated as a side business
to start a college fund
for their kids and a tropical
vacation fund for themselves,
the Stoevers have kept at it
all these years because of the
joy they get seeing customers
create and continue a family
tradition.
“We both grew up with
families who had live trees and so we really like
seeing people coming back and kind of becoming
friends that we talk to every year. That’s
pretty neat,” Dave said. “This is now our 24th
year selling trees so we’re getting second generations
coming out now.”
They’ve had customers as young as five-dayold
infants to a great-grandpa over 100 years old
visit the tree farm.
And no matter what age, Marcia added, everyone
is usually happy when they visit.
“It is really fun to see families that started
out with tiny children and those children now
bringing their own,” Marcia said. “It’s fun to see
families evolve. It’s also fun to get brand new
ones too that have never done this but want to
start a new tradition.”
For anyone in that camp, the Stoevers have
a couple tips for keeping that first tree looking
fresh all season long.
Most important is getting the tree in water as
soon as possible. Marcia estimated a tree would
last for two months if kept properly hydrated.
Another watering tip is starting out with warm
water.
“They’ll take about a gallon per day for the
first few days then they get saturated and slow
down,” Marcia said. “You don’t want to forget
watering because then it will seal off and not
take any more water.”
If that would happen then the trunk would
need to be trimmed down and the process
started over again.
Over the course of the year the Stoevers spend
time maintaining their inventory, including
shaping and trimming trees so they grow fuller.
Still, not all trees grow the same. So the Stoevers
cut up several each year that won’t make
great Christmas trees and make them into
wreaths of different sizes to sell instead. They
also sell their own unique tree stands.
There is also always free cider and cookies
available inside the shop.
As far as the trees go, customers will have until
‘ It’s a Wonderful
Life’ onstage
The Christmas classic “It’s a
Wonderful Life” will soon be
onstage in Emmetsburg at the
Main Street Community Theatre.
The performance dates for the
show are Dec. 7-9 and Dec. 14-16.
The show will be performed at the
Main Street Community Theatre.
“‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ is a musical
adaptation of Frank Capra’s
masterpiece film. This is the saga
of George Bailey, the everyman
from the small town of Bedford
Falls, whose dreams of escape and
adventure have been squashed by
family obligations and civic duty,
and whose guardian angel has to
descend on Christmas Eve to save
him from despair, and to remind
him – by showing him what the
world would have been like had
he never been born – that he has
had, after all, a wonderful life,” according
to the website.
