Despite being in its final year, the experience at the Holiday Store at The Grove is just as jolly as ever. The heartwarming soundtrack of Christmas carols encourages merrymaking. Kids and adults can snack on free samples of holiday candies while browsing a colorful selection of customizable ornaments for the whole family. The friendly group of crafters and volunteers greet shoppers with joy and help them find whatever their looking for. “It has been an institution,” Van Voorhis said. “People come from all over. Many are disappointed we’re leaving.” Terri Wagner, of Lincolnwood, has also been involved with The Grove’s Holiday Store throughout its lifespan and sells her homemade crafts at the shop. Wagner’s “eclectic” bunch of crafts includes woodburning, food favors, cross-stitching, intricate holiday bows and much more. She’s a selfprofessed “Grove groupie” and loves hanging out at the Holiday Store throughout the season. “What I love most about the store is the camaraderie among the crafters, the experience with the customers and being surrounded by beautiful things,” Wagner said. The event has been a pillar in the community. The space reflects the desire for a communal gathering place where people can bond over the Christmas spirit. With its closing, that space will be removed, saddening shoppers and crafters like Wagner. “Everything has its season, but I’m personally sad it see it go,” Wagner said. Nevertheless, the people who have produced the crafts and run the shop over the decades want to extend their gratitude to all the shoppers. “Thank you for all the years of faithful patronage,” Wagner said. Van Voorhis echoed her point. “We want to thank the readers for their long-time dedication and for making the shop the success it has been,” she said. The Holiday Store at The Grove is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Thursdays to Sundays every weekend until Dec. 23.
