6 | December 6, 2018 | The glenview lantern news glenviewlantern.com West Northfield D31 Board of Education Requested tax levy calls for 5.1 percent increase Neil Milbert Freelance Reporter West Northfield School District 31 is requesting a levy that is 5.1 percent higher than last year’s tax extension to ensure receipt of taxes from new property, including developments from the Provenance Development at Mission Hills. Chief School Business Official Cathy Lauria explained the proposed tax levy and the rationale behind it at the Thursday, Nov. 29 meeting of the Board of Education. The proposed 2019 levy request totals $17,295,608. This amount includes $820,788 for bond and interest purposes that is estimated to be levied or already has been levied. A breakdown of projected expenditures is: Educational fund $14,274,320, operations and maintenance $1,300,000, transportation $500,000, Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund $200,000, Social Security $200,000 and working cash $500. A public hearing on the proposed levy is scheduled to be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, in Winkelman School prior to the regular board meeting at which the finalized version of the extension will be voted on. District schools earn ‘commendable’ grade Field and Winkleman received grades of “commendable,” third-highest of the four assessments on the new Illinois School Report Card to evaluate public schools in the state. Field’s grade was 79 and Winkelman’s was 76. “Our schools consistently outperform other schools in the state,” Dr. Carrie De La Cruz, director of Curriculum and Instruction, told the board. “Math is an area of strength. Kimley-Horn representatives have visited District 225 for an initial meeting and to observe morning and afternoon traffic patterns and practices. ROUND IT UP A brief recap of Board of Education action on Thursday, Nov. 29: • The board accepted a $76,800 bid from Chicagoland Paving Contractors, of Lake Zurich, for an asphalt fire lane at Winkelman School. The board rejected higher bids from Abby Paving and Allstar Asphalt, as well as a nonconforming bid from Superior Paving. • Members approved payments of $2,081.881.14 and $874,769.77 to cover warrants for the second half of October and first half of November, respectively. They also approved payments of $439,560.54 and $432,281.10 to cover payroll for the second half of October and first half of November, respectively. • Fifth-grade teacher Kelly Alleya and speech and language pathologist Karen McGrath had their requests for family medical leave approved by the board. Alleya’s leave will run from the beginning of May 2019 through the end of the school year, while McGrath’s will begin in May 2019 and end in mid- October 2019. • Board members accepted the resignations of Winkelman library media specialist Judith Lopez and Field instructional assistant Akhila Lakkamsani. The first of the complex’s two floors will house locker rooms with direct access to the rink and a pro shop, as well as a spacious lobby area. The second floor will feature a restaurant, a gallery for spectators, a fitness training room and two multipurpose rooms. According to Frank Parisi of William Architects, the site will feature a drop-off area, 196 parking spots, including nine that meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilites Act, and a service drive for zambonis and other vehicles. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for next spring and the tentative timetable calls for the project to be completed in the autumn of 2020. Synchronized Skaters star Teams of synchronized skaters from the Glenview Blades and individual competitors from the Glenview Ice Center and Glenview Skate School will perform in a free Holiday Figure Skating Exhibition from 5-8 p.m. on Dec. 21 at the Ice Center, kicking off the Park District’s annual Winter Carnival. The skaters will showcase routines they performed on Nov. 10 at the Autumn Classic at Pleasant Prairie, Wisc. The competition evaluated skaters on their mastery of skills in the Learn to Skate USA program.
