IMPORTANT NOTICE<br />

This handbook has been developed to ensure a safe, secure and<br />

comfortable recreational experience for the students, faculty, staff,<br />

affiliate members and guests of ACU. The <strong>SRWC</strong> reserves the right to<br />

add, delete or adapt policies and/or procedures in the interest of safety<br />

and management.<br />

Violation of these policies, procedures or other posted rules, malicious<br />

use of or defacing ACU property, solicitation, verbal abuse, and/or other<br />

violations as stated in the ACU Student Handbook, will be investigated<br />

by the Student Life Department and/or Campus Police.<br />

ASSUMPTION OF RISK<br />

All participants assume the risk of participating in programs and<br />

activities in the <strong>SRWC</strong>. ACU is not responsible for financial costs<br />

related to health services resulting from ill health or injury incurred while<br />

participating. It is recommended that participants secure accident<br />

coverage prior to exercising or program participation.<br />

All participants are required to sign a waiver. Minors (under 18) must<br />

have parental consent to participate. Furthermore, minors (under 16)<br />

must have a parent with them at all times.<br />

GENERAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES<br />

■ Participants must submit a signed <strong>SRWC</strong> waiver prior to active participation.<br />

Members 17 years and younger must have a parent or legal guardian sign a waiver<br />

on their behalf.<br />

■ <strong>SRWC</strong> members should use an ACU or <strong>SRWC</strong> ID to gain access to the facility.<br />

■ Minors 14 years and younger should gain access by checking in at the Member<br />

Services Desk with an adult member.<br />

■ Specific activity areas have age restrictions, please refer to policies for each specific<br />

area.<br />

■ Participants must adhere to <strong>SRWC</strong> attire policy.<br />

■ For sanitation and safety reasons, and to protect the facility and equipment,<br />

participants are required to wear the appropriate attire while in the <strong>SRWC</strong>.<br />

■ Participants must be at least 15 years old to participate without adult supervision.<br />

■ Service animals – as defined by the university policy for animals on campus – are<br />

allowed. No other animal is permitted.<br />

■ Food is not permitted in activity areas or locker rooms. All drink containers must have<br />

resealable lids. Glass drink containers are not permitted.<br />

■ Photography and videography of <strong>SRWC</strong> activities, programs, or participants is not<br />

permitted without permission of administrative staff.<br />

■ The <strong>SRWC</strong> staff reserves the right to ask people to leave at any time for<br />

inappropriate behavior or attire.<br />

■ Bicycles, skateboards, skates, and scooters are not to be used in the <strong>SRWC</strong>.<br />

■ Playing music on portable speakers or any device at a level that can be heard by<br />

others is not permitted unless otherwise noted.<br />

■ Reservation requests should be made at srwc.acu.edu<br />

PARTICIPANT BEHAVIOR<br />

§ Participants must observe all posted signs and verbal directions provided by <strong>SRWC</strong><br />

staff.<br />

§ Participants may not interfere with employee duties, use profanity, or engage in<br />

verbal or physical abuse of employees or other participants.<br />

§ Use of drug, alcohol, and tobacco products are not permitted at the <strong>SRWC</strong>.<br />

Attendees or participants identified as impaired will be removed from the <strong>SRWC</strong>.<br />

§ Sharing or borrowing an ACU or <strong>SRWC</strong> ID to gain access violates University and<br />

<strong>SRWC</strong> regulations. ID violations may result in suspension from the <strong>SRWC</strong>.<br />

§ Use of the <strong>SRWC</strong> for personal gain violates University policy relating to facilities,<br />

services and solicitations, and is prohibited.<br />

§ For sanitation and safety reasons, and to protect the facility and equipment,<br />

participants are required to wear the appropriate attire while in the <strong>SRWC</strong>.<br />

§ <strong>SRWC</strong> staff reserve the right to ask participants to leave the facility and deny access<br />

for violation of <strong>SRWC</strong> policies. Individuals that are removed from the <strong>SRWC</strong> are<br />

required to meet with <strong>SRWC</strong> senior staff prior to resuming access.<br />

§ Situations or circumstances not covered in this handbook will be addressed and<br />

resolved by <strong>SRWC</strong> senior staff and designated university officials.<br />

§ Members and guests may appeal a disciplinary decision by meeting with the Dean of<br />

Students or a designated university official.<br />

§ All student appeals will follow the ACU Student Handbook process.<br />

SAFETY & SECURITY<br />

■ All participation is voluntary and users of the <strong>SRWC</strong> assume all risks when they take part<br />

in any activity. It is the responsibility of all participants to verify their own health, accident<br />

and injury insurance status and to consult with a physician prior to participating in active<br />

programs and activities. The <strong>SRWC</strong> does not provide health, accident or injury insurance.<br />

■ Signed waivers must be submitted to the Member Services Desk prior to participation.<br />

■ We ask that participants report the following to <strong>SRWC</strong> staff<br />

● Unsafe facilities<br />

● Out of order equipment<br />

● Any leaks or spills<br />

● Participants who are not feeling well<br />

● Participants engaging in an unsafe activity<br />

● Potential concerns you may have<br />

■ If you feel faint or light-headed, stop all activity immediately and seek assistance.<br />

■ Weapons are prohibited.<br />

■ Smoking, vaping, smokeless tobacco and alcoholic beverages are not permitted in or<br />

around the <strong>SRWC</strong>.<br />

■ Lockers are available to store all personal items. Rental lockers are available for long<br />

term storage.<br />

■ In case of an emergency, please follow the directions of the <strong>SRWC</strong> staff.<br />

■ The <strong>SRWC</strong> facility should be used for its intended purpose. Modification of equipment or<br />

facilities is prohibited unless under the supervision of a <strong>SRWC</strong> staff member.<br />

■ Please ask for assistance if you are not familiar with the equipment or any activity being<br />

offered.<br />

■ The <strong>SRWC</strong> is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen personal items.<br />

■ Individuals should report all illegal activity to ACU Police by calling 325-674-2911.<br />

■ Personal toiletry items such as cleansing products, hair care products, razors, etc., will<br />

be disposed of due to sanitary health reasons.<br />

■ Items of value, such as electronic devices, textbooks, clothing, footwear, wallets, keys,<br />

credit cards, jewelry, etc., are secured in the <strong>SRWC</strong> Administrative Offices or ACU<br />

Police Department.<br />

■ Other lost and found items are stored at the desk or in the Wet Classroom closet for 30<br />

days prior to disposal.<br />

ATTIRE<br />

The attire policy intends to protect members from unsanitary and unsafe conditions.<br />

Participants are required to wear appropriate attire: t-shirts, shorts, swimsuits,<br />

warm-up suits, sweat suits, and/or aerobics attire.<br />

Proper athletic shoes are required. Open-toed shoes, sandals/flip-flops, turf shoes,<br />

and cleats (spikes) are not allowed.<br />

Only non-marking soles are permitted on any hardwood floors.<br />

The <strong>SRWC</strong> staff will have the discretion to determine if attire is appropriate.<br />

Participants wearing inappropriate attire will be asked to leave or change their attire<br />

to meet <strong>SRWC</strong> policy.<br />

Swimsuits are only allowed in the Aquatic Center.<br />

Women: One piece or tankini type swimsuits are permitted, but no bikini cut<br />

swimsuits will be allowed.<br />

Men: Standard swim trunks or board shorts are permitted. No “briefs” type<br />

swimsuits will be allowed.<br />

WESSEL FITNESS CENTER<br />

■ There are inherent risks associated with lifting weights and cardiovascular exercises.<br />

Therefore, if you feel faint or light-headed, stop all activity immediately.<br />

■ Age restrictions:<br />

o 15 years of age or older may use the fitness center without adult supervision.<br />

o 13 - 14 years of age may use the fitness center under the supervision of a<br />

parent.<br />

o 12 and younger are not allowed in this area.<br />

■ Ask for assistance if unfamiliar with the equipment.<br />

■ Chalk is not allowed in the free weight area. Liquid Grip is provided free of charge at<br />

the member services desk.<br />

■ No writing or posting workouts or other comments on mirrors.<br />

■ Return weights to their racks or weight trees after use.<br />

■ Equipment must remain in the designated weight room area.<br />

■ Equipment should only be used as designed.<br />

■ Clean equipment after each use with the provided wipes.<br />

■ No grunting, yelling, bothersome noises or profanity is allowed.<br />

■ Weights should never be dropped unless bumper plates are used. When bumper<br />

plates are used, weights should not be dropped from above mid-thigh level.<br />

■ Use of treadmill safety clips is highly recommended.<br />

■ Glass drink containers are not permitted and all drink containers must have a<br />

resealable lid.<br />

■ Participants must allow others to “work in” between sets.<br />

■ If weights, pulleys, or other parts become jammed, users should not attempt to free<br />

them. Report all mechanical problems to the Member Services Desk.<br />

■ Using weight “bar collars” and a “spotter” is highly recommended.<br />

BOULDERING WALL<br />

■ There are inherent risks involved in climbing and bouldering activities. Therefore, if<br />

you feel faint or light-headed, stop all activity immediately.<br />

■ Climbing shoes are required to boulder. No bare feet.<br />

■ Age restrictions:<br />

o 15 years of age or older may use the bouldering wall without adult supervision.<br />

o 13 - 14 years of age may use the bouldering wall with adult supervision.<br />

o 12 and younger are not allowed in this area.<br />

■ Shoes and helmet (if desired) can be checked-out at the Member Services Desk.<br />

■ Please ask for assistance if unfamiliar with bouldering activities.<br />

■ Active spotting and pad placement are highly recommended.<br />

■ Only four climbers are allowed on the wall at one time.<br />

■ During peak times, participants should share the wall.<br />

■ Food is not permitted in this area. All drink containers must have resealable lids. Glass<br />

drink containers are not permitted.<br />

■ Loose chalk is not permitted. Use of a chalk bag or liquid chalk is encouraged; both are<br />

provided at the Member Services Desk.<br />

GYMNASIUM<br />

■ There are inherent risks involved in exercise. Therefore, if you feel faint or lightheaded,<br />

stop all activity immediately.<br />

■ All open recreation games are on a first-come, first serve basis. Gym reservations may me<br />

requested at srwc.acu.edu<br />

■ If others are waiting to participate, game play times will be determined by <strong>SRWC</strong><br />

staff.<br />

■ Hanging on or “snapping” the basketball rim is not permitted.<br />

■ Shirts and shoes are required at all times. Only athletic shoes with non-marking<br />

soles may be worn as footwear.<br />

■ Hats, caps, and loose jewelry are not permitted on courts during play.<br />

■ Kicking basketballs and volleyballs is not permitted.<br />

■ ACU is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Day lockers and/or small kit lockers<br />

located in the gym are available to store valuables.<br />

■ To set up for special recreational programs or events (volleyball, badminton,<br />

pickleball, futsal, etc.), please see the Member Services Desk.<br />

■ For goal height adjustments please see the Member Services Desk.<br />

■ Food is not permitted in this area except during special events with advanced<br />

approval.<br />

■ Playing music on portable speakers or any device at a level that can be heard by<br />

others is not permitted.<br />

AQUATIC CENTER<br />

■ There are inherent risks for this activity. Therefore, if you feel faint or light-headed, stop<br />

all activity immediately.<br />

■ Swimming is only allowed when a lifeguard is on the pool deck. Participants must follow<br />

all posted signs and directions given by the lifeguard on duty.<br />

■ Age restrictions:<br />

o 15 years of age or older may use the aquatic center without adult supervision.<br />

o 14 years of age and younger may use the leisure pool under the supervision of<br />

an adult member.<br />

o Requests to swim in the lap pool for members younger than 13 may be<br />

made by visiting the Director of Aquatics and Safety.<br />

■ Do not distract lifeguards unless there is an emergency.<br />

■ Please shower before entering the pool. People with communicable diseases or open<br />

wounds should not enter the pool.<br />

■ Adhesive bandages should not be worn in the pools.<br />

■ Appropriate swimsuits must be worn at all times. Refer to the <strong>SRWC</strong> attire policy.<br />

■ The following are not permitted:<br />

o Individual Pool Parties (possible exceptions include student organizations and<br />

business entities)<br />

o Running on deck, pushing, horseplay and throwing people into the air and<br />

“chicken fighting” (being on someone else’s shoulders);<br />

o hanging on the lane lines, volleyball net or basketball rims<br />

o spitting, nasal discharge, urination, etc., in the pool.<br />

o standing on, sitting on, or going over the walls in the leisure pool<br />

■ Parents may give swim instruction to children included on their family membership.<br />

Otherwise, only <strong>SRWC</strong> Employees with Red Cross WSI Certifications may teach swim<br />

lessons in <strong>SRWC</strong> pools.<br />

A swim lesson is the process and progression of skills being taught or coached in order for an<br />

individual to swim and consists of the following components:<br />

1. Breath control and submerging (blowing bubbles)<br />

2. Alternating and simultaneous leg action on front and back<br />

3. Alternating and simultaneous arm action on front and back<br />

4. Combined arm and leg actions on front and back<br />

■ Immediately report fecal contamination to lifeguards so appropriate disinfection can be<br />

administered.<br />

■ All pool activities must stop when lightning is detected within 10 miles. Activities may<br />

resume after no lightning has been detected within 10 miles for at least 30 minutes.<br />

■ Food is not permitted in this area. All drink containers must have resealable lids. Glass<br />

drink containers are not permitted.<br />

■ Deck shoes may be worn on the pool deck. Street shoes are not permitted.<br />

■ Diving is only permitted in the deep end of the lap pool.<br />

Use of cameras (including cell phones) is not permitted in the locker rooms.<br />

ACU is not responsible for lost/stolen or damaged items.<br />

Participants who are 15 years of age or older may use locker rooms without adult<br />

supervision. Participants who are 14 and younger must be accompanied by an<br />

adult member. Youth 3 years old or older must use a gender appropriate locker<br />

room.<br />

Participants should only use the Visiting Team Locker Room when it is not<br />

reserved for others. Do not leave personal items in the Visiting Team Locker<br />

Room.<br />

Rental lockers and day lockers are available in the men’s and women’s locker rooms.<br />

To rent a locker, please visit the <strong>SRWC</strong> Member Services Desk.<br />

Items left in rental lockers at the end of the rental period are held for one month before<br />

being discarded.<br />

Locks left on day lockers will be cut off and contents removed on a regular basis.<br />

Towel Rental Service is available at the Member Services Desk.<br />

If this locker room needs attention, please notify the Member Services Desk.<br />

Food is not permitted in this area. All drink containers must have resealable lids. Glass<br />

drink containers are not permitted.<br />

Playing music on portable speakers or any device at a level that can be heard by others<br />

is not permitted.<br />

Players should limit play to one hour if others are waiting to participate.<br />

ACU is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Use of a locker is highly<br />

recommended.<br />

resealable lids. Glass drink containers are not permitted.<br />

Standing still on the track is not permitted unless a special event is<br />

scheduled.<br />

Sprinting is only allowed on straightaways.<br />

Only non-marking athletics shoes may be worn as footwear.<br />

ACU is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please store all<br />

valuables in lockers.<br />

Do not lean on, write on, or attach items to mirrors.<br />

Food is not permitted in this area. All drink containers must have<br />

resealable lids. Glass drink containers are not permitted.<br />

Playing music on provided speakers is permitted in this space. Please<br />

avoid playing music with lyrics that might be offensive to others.<br />

Participants who are 15 years of age or older may use the studio<br />

without adult supervision. Participants who are 14 years of age and<br />

younger may use the studio with adult supervision.<br />

EQUIPMENT CHECK-OUT / IN<br />

§ Day use equipment is free of charge and is available for checkout at the<br />

Member Services Desk. All equipment must be returned to the Member<br />

Services Desk after use.<br />

§ Hammocks, tents, bikes, paddleboards are available to rent by the hour<br />

or day. Payment is collected upon return of equipment. Lost, missing, or<br />

damaged rental equipment is subject to additional fees.<br />

§ Equipment rental is the sole responsibility of the person who signs it<br />

out. Regardless of who used the equipment, it must be returned and<br />

signed in by the person who signed it out.<br />

FACILITY RESERVATIONS<br />

§ ACU groups (departments, organizations, clubs, etc.) may reserve space in the<br />

<strong>SRWC</strong> for up to 3 hours twice per week. Due to high volume, certain reservations may<br />

be denied. All spaces are free to ACU groups unless a reservation is requested<br />

outside of normal operating hours and/or additional staffing is required.<br />

§ Non-ACU groups may reserve space in the <strong>SRWC</strong> at the discretion of <strong>SRWC</strong><br />

administrative staff. Non-ACU groups will be required to complete a contract and<br />

provide a certificate of insurance 3 weeks prior to their event.<br />

§ Requests to reserve the <strong>SRWC</strong> may be made at srwc.acu.edu<br />

§ The <strong>SRWC</strong> reserves the right to move a group to another space or cancel the<br />

reservation at any time when there is a conflict or concern that requires it.<br />

§ The sale of concessions is not permitted without prior approval.<br />

EARLY ACCESS & EXTENDED HOURS<br />

§ Requests requiring access to the <strong>SRWC</strong> outside of regular operating hours should be<br />

made at least 3 weeks prior to the event. Additional facility and staffing fees may be<br />

charged if the reservation extends beyond regular operating hours.<br />

CANCELLATION<br />

§ If an event is cancelled or changed, refunds are distributed as follows:<br />

o 100% refund: At least eleven business days prior to event.<br />

o 50% refund: Three to ten business days prior to event.<br />

o 0% refund: Less than three business days prior to event.<br />

MEMBERSHIPS<br />

§ A membership or guest pass is required for access except during open house events.<br />

§ Those eligible for free membership include:<br />

o<br />

o<br />

ACU Students and their minor dependents<br />

ACU Employees and their minor dependents<br />

o Employee and student family membership expiration is concurrent with the separation<br />

from ACU.<br />

o ACU Retirees may also claim a free family membership if the retiree worked for the<br />

university for at least 10 consecutive years and retired after the age of 55.<br />

§ Eligible to Purchase Memberships<br />

o Individual or Family Memberships may be purchased by ACU alumni and Abilene<br />

Christian School staff and parents<br />

o Individual Memberships may be purchased by ACU athletic interns and ACU<br />

student spouses<br />

§ Membership privileges include use of all activity areas, sweat towels, and day lockers.<br />

§ A separate fee will be assessed for <strong>SRWC</strong> services including group exercise passes,<br />

rental lockers, bath towel service, personal training, swim lessons and certain special<br />

offerings.<br />

SPOUSE & DEPENDANT MEMBERSHIP<br />

§ Spouses and dependents of members are eligible for membership when a family<br />

membership is purchased. All adults desiring membership must have an ACU or<br />

<strong>SRWC</strong> ID made during the membership enrollment process.<br />

§ All members must use their ACU or <strong>SRWC</strong> ID card to gain access to the facility.<br />

§ Employee and student family membership expiration is concurrent with the separation<br />

from ACU.<br />

§ Members who are over 15 years may use the <strong>SRWC</strong> without a parent being present.<br />

Family members who are 14 and younger may only use the <strong>SRWC</strong> with adult<br />

supervision.<br />

GUEST PASS<br />

§ Each guest must have a sponsoring member present to purchase a guest pass and<br />

use the facility.<br />

§ For pool access: Each member may only sponsor one family guest pass or one<br />

individual guest pass per day.<br />

§ Before using the facility, the guest must present a valid photo ID and sign a waiver at<br />

the <strong>SRWC</strong> Member Services Desk.<br />

§ Guest pass privileges include all <strong>SRWC</strong> activity areas, group exercise classes, day<br />

lockers & sweat towels.<br />

§ Sponsors are responsible for their guest’s compliance with <strong>SRWC</strong> policies and for<br />

charges related lost/damaged equipment.<br />

PERSONAL TRAINING<br />

■<br />

General<br />

o Session costs vary depending on the trainer and the number of sessions purchased.<br />

o Payment for sessions should be made only after approval from a personal trainer.<br />

o Payment can be made at srwc.acu.edu or at the member services desk.<br />

o Paying a personal trainer directly will result in membership termination and losing<br />

one’s sessions.<br />

o All personal training sessions expire 1-year after they are purchased.<br />

o Guests of the <strong>SRWC</strong> may purchase sessions. Trainers will meet guest clients at the<br />

member services desk.<br />

o Clients should swipe their ID cards or check-in at the member services desk to record<br />

every session.<br />

o Clients are required to follow the <strong>SRWC</strong> dress code. The <strong>SRWC</strong> staff have the<br />

discretion to determine if attire is appropriate. Clients wearing inappropriate attire will<br />

be asked to leave or change.<br />

Refunds<br />

o Personal Training sessions are non-refundable except when a client:<br />

§ who is a faculty or staff member leaves ACU<br />

§ who is a student unenrolls from ACU academic classes<br />

§ takes a formal leave of absence or sabbatical<br />

§ has changes in their medical condition resulting in physical limitations<br />

§ moves 20-miles or more from ACU.<br />

o Documentation may be required.<br />

Canceling Sessions<br />

o Clients wishing to cancel a session must notify their personal trainer a minimum of 24<br />

hours before the scheduled session. A cancelation made with less than 24-hour notice<br />

will count as a session used.<br />

o Multiple cancelations may result in the client losing their sessions or having them put<br />

on hold. This will be handled at the discretion of the trainer and the director of facility<br />

operations.<br />

Late Policy<br />

o Clients should arrive for personal training sessions on time. Sessions that begin late<br />

will still end 1-hour after the scheduled start time.<br />

o Clients who arrive 30 or more minutes late for a session may lose the entire session.<br />
