Sam began playing hockey at the age of 5 at<br />
his local hockey club Leicester. A keen all-round<br />
sportsman he excelled at school but opted out<br />
of the single hockey system in his teenage years.<br />
Returning with a vengeance and impressing<br />
in the national league he is now the leading<br />
forward in the GB set up, reaching a milestone<br />
of 50 goals in 99 appearances since 2014.<br />

Having won various bronze medals, most<br />
recently at the Commonwealth Games where<br />
Sam was the leading goal scorer, the GB squad<br />
are looking to progress further at the European<br />

“I think since the girls’ Olympic gold medal, Time and again I seeing junior<br />

(as well as the Sultan Azlan Cup results) is the<br />

The product is incredibly important to me.<br />
Having input into the design of the slightly<br />
different touch glove (I have the two middle<br />
fingers cut out so that the glove just protects the<br />
back of the hand as this is the most important<br />
area to avoid injury) and using such incredibly<br />
light sticks makes a huge difference to my game.

KMG<br />
Graduating with a degree in painting<br />
KMG is an artist and illustrator whose<br />
creative career has lead her to focus<br />
on exhibiting, mural design and<br />
commercial projects.<br />
She spent her youth encouraged to<br />
challenge and experience as much<br />
as possible, which resulted in more<br />
than a few broken bones, red faces<br />
and concussions. Due to this curious<br />
nature she has grown up with a desire<br />
to explore everything ranging from the<br />
precarious to the mundane.<br />
A weird combination of youthful<br />
enthusiasm mixed with utter cynicism<br />
leaves her work with a sarcastic, raw<br />
and yet playful tone.<br />
Grays contacted me with the concept<br />
of creating a fantastical landscape<br />
crammed full of different characters.<br />
We wanted to create an image<br />
that appealed to a wide<br />
demographic so I worked<br />
on a series of characters<br />
that I felt were fun enough<br />
for a younger audience<br />
but also cheeky<br />
and edgy enough<br />
for older players.<br />
Geographic shapes<br />
and organic forms<br />
were introduced throughout the<br />
characters to give a sense of a fictional<br />
world that the viewer can explore and<br />
discover new elements. I loved the<br />
idea of creating a monochrome<br />
composition that could be<br />
customised by the sticks<br />
owner, giving them the<br />
opportunity to have a stick<br />
which was unique to their<br />
own personality and offer<br />
them a chance to be part<br />
of the creative process.

Matías Paredes made his debut for the<br />
Argentinian national squad in 2001, and<br />
has competed for his native country in three<br />
Olympics winning Gold in Rio in 2016.<br />
He has twice been named as one of the<br />
top 10 young players in the world by the<br />
International Field <strong>Hockey</strong> Council. In 2003<br />
he was awarded the Silver Olimpia for the<br />
Best Argentine <strong>Hockey</strong> Player.<br />
Paredes started his club career<br />
with Ducilo de Berazategui Club at age<br />
four in his native Argentina, before moving<br />
to Germany to play with UHC, Hamburg in<br />
2002. He then moved on to the Netherlands<br />
to play for Laren HMC Club.<br />
Matías has won the bronze medal at the<br />
2014 Men’s <strong>Hockey</strong> World Cup and three<br />
gold medals at the Pan American Games<br />
(2003, 2011, 2015) earning over 300 caps<br />
for his country.<br />

“Of course it grew from that achievement<br />
but we still have to gain more fans and boys<br />
who want to play our sport. It’s not an easy<br />
job because we have to compete with other<br />
popular sports in our country, like football,<br />
rugby, basketball, etc... However, we need to<br />

and win more space in the media. Also, we<br />

“Next tournament will be the World Cup in India.<br />
This will take place next November and we are<br />

We want to keep being one of the best teams in<br />

Have you noticed an increase in<br />
participation in hockey in the UK because<br />
of the success at the last Olympics?<br />
“So I missed out on the Olympics in London<br />
but was obviously part of the gold medal<br />
winning team in Rio. In that time the stats<br />
that the FIH have published say that there<br />
are roughly 10000 additional adult hockey<br />
players (in the UK). I couldn’t verify that but I<br />
hear regularly that junior teams and sessions<br />
are oversubscribed and the goalie camps<br />
that MH1 have been running have grown in<br />
popularity and scope in the last year.<br />
We have some way to go to match the sport<br />
in Holland where I play now but being the<br />
fastest growing hockey playing nation is still<br />
an excellent achievement.”<br />
What are the next major tournaments<br />
for the squad and what do you hope<br />
to achieve?<br />
“Looking ahead the World Cup was a<br />
watershed moment for me and I decided<br />
that I wanted to play a full season in<br />
Holland before selection for the European<br />
Championships in Antwerp next year.<br />
Of course I am disappointed not to be<br />
involved in the Champions Trophy in China<br />
and the Pro League starting in January.<br />
But I have now been involved in the<br />
centralised system for a long time and in<br />
order to recharge my batteries for Tokyo and<br />
beyond need to consider my progress in the<br />
sport I love. But make no mistake the desire<br />
and passion that helped us all win Olympic<br />
gold still burns bright in me!!!”<br />
How important is the product that you<br />
use on the pitch?<br />
“Its everything, especially in the goalkeepers<br />
position. Every piece of kit needs to strike<br />

the balance between protection and being<br />
lightweight. If a plastic object ie. a ball, is<br />
travelling at upwards of 100 mph, then its<br />
only logical that I can wear the best possible<br />

of the kit you used and developed that helps<br />
goalkeepers be better protected I think is<br />
