Waste Audit
We’re conducting an audit of the rubbish that
goes into kerbside bins throughout the region
over the next eight weeks. At randomly selected
properties, our consultant’s crew will bag and
tie rubbish early in the morning before regular
collection trucks come through the street.
Analysing the rubbish will help us understand
the region’s waste disposal habits. All waste is
kept confidential and disposed of in the normal
way afterwards. If you would like to opt out of the
audit, please call us.
Road Closures
Emu Creek Hall Road, Crows Nest and Post Office
Road, Ravensbourne will be temporarily closed from
February to June 2019. These temporary closures
will allow us to replace the existing structures with a
new structure which will improve safety for motorists
and allow for continued traffic flow. Local detours,
additional signage and controls will be in place for
the safety of motorist and construction crews. We
would like to thank the community for their patience
and cooperation during these works and apologise
for any inconvenience these works may cause.
When Trucks are About,
Keep a Look Out
In courts and dead ends, our waste trucks have to
turn around and reverse, and the drivers can’t see
all around them at the one time. Please be sure to
supervise your children, particularly on bin collection
days. It’s common for kids to ride bikes, skateboards
and play games in the street. Remember that our
trucks are big and kids are small, so please keep a
safe distance from our vehicles.
Highfields ideal for high tech business
- Denis Wagner
By MILES NOLLER
A Wagner group leader, Denis Wagner, says
Highfields could become a technical hub of the
Toowoomba region, but it would be different
to the commercial hubs being developed at
Wellcamp and Charlton.
Mr Wagner said it was unlikely that big
industry would be established in Highfields.
But he said there was no reason that
developments aligned with high tech industries
and offices could not established in Highfields.
Mr Wagner, however, did emphasise
the importance of the trees and ambience
of Highfields, and said Highfields had real
opportunities with residential, and several lighter
industries, associated with technology.
Mr Wagner was addressing the December
meeting of Highfields and District Business
Connections.
He detailed the decision making process that
led to the construction of the Wellcamp Airport,
Australia’s first major airport constructed on a
greenfield site since Tullamarine in Melbourne
in 1967.
He explained that the development of an
airport at Wellcamp came more than a decade
after local and State governments developed
plans for a heavy industrial area in the Wellcamp/
Charlton area including some of the Wagner’s
3000acres of land at Wellcamp Downs.
He said the industrial development was being
planned by EDROC (Eastern Downs Regional
Organisation of Councils) which included all
eight councils that became the Toowoomba
Regional Council, plus the Warwick and Gatton
councils.
Jondaryan Shire Council approved the
development of a quarry at Wellcamp Downs
in 1996, and in 2001 Jondaryan Council also
rezoned the area for industry.
In 2006 the Wagner family decided to develop
a business park on their Wellcamp land, but found
it difficult to attract businesses to it, because of
the lack of connectivity to the Toowoomba area.
This frustration led to the decision in 2012 to
build an airport. Denis Wagner said the approval
was relatively straight forward because of the
rezoning and approvals of the Jondaryan Shire
previously. The application to develop an airport
was code assessable.
Work on the airport started in March 2013
and was completed in November 2014. This was
despite scepticism by the public, the aviation
industry, the southern media and others.
“It proved to Australia that regions can
achieve significant projects.”
Now Wellcamp Airport has 90 passenger
flights a week in and out of the airport, and it has
a weekly freight service to Hong Kong that is
now oversubscribed.
Mr Wagner said it was hoped that Cathay
Pacific would add more freight services each
week to meet the demand.
The Cathay 747-800 each Tuesday carries 138
tonnes of freight to Hong Kong and southern
China. Fresh beef loaded at Wellcamp at 5pm
can be in a restaurant in Shanghai at 5am the
next day.
The 747-800 is 50metres longer than the 747
passenger planes.
The success of the Wagner group to secure a
Qantas pilot training academy at Wellcamp is yet
another major achievement. It is due to open in
June, 2019 with buildings for accommodation,
training and maintenance yet to be constructed.
Qantas wants to be training 250 pilots
at Wellcamp over 20 years. The Wagners
would like it to increase to 500 pilots. Besides
Wellcamp, training would also occur at eight
smaller satellite airports including Toowoomba,
Oakey, Dalby, Millmerran and Pittsworth.
There are plans to take young pilots who have
just learned to fly, and train them to commercial
level, using training simulators in the program.
When the inland rail is constructed on
Wellcamp Airport’s western side, Wagners will
connect it to their business park. They will then
have the rare distinction of operating road, rail
and air services from Wellcamp.
Sea freight will be added when the Wagners
complete a shipping terminal in the Brisbane
River at Pinkenba. The combination of these
four types of transport is likely to be a first for
Australia, and maybe the world.
Highfields and District Business Connections president Tess
Bourke and Wagner Group director Denis Wagner whose
address to the business group’s December breakfast meeting
detailed the process that led to the construction of Wellcamp
Airport and pointed to the positive future for the area that the
developments planned by the Wagner Group will bring.
The first Cathay Pacific 747-800 freight aircraft touched down at Wellcamp Airport on November 22, 2016 to load freight for Hong Kong.
Since then Cathay Pacific has taken freight from Wellcamp on a weekly basis, but there is now more freight than aircraft space. Denis
Wagner said it was hoped that more flights each week wiould be added to the Wellcamp schedule.
have your say
on the future of sport, active recreation
and healthy living in the Toowoomba Region
Goombungee Golf Club president John Harth and Mayor Paul Antonio, on the 9th green with
club captain David Cass, ladies champion Ann Cass, Cr Carol Taylor, Cr Chris Tait, Barbara Harth
and Bernard Roberts, Toowoomba manager of Total Eden which installed the new water system.
The Goombungee Golf Club has been successful in
having a watering system installed, using water from
a dam on Little Gomoren Creek which previously
supplied water to the town before being connected to
the Toowoomba water system.
President of the Goombungee Golf Club John Harth
led the project.
Mayor Paul Antonio, when opening the new system,
referred to John’s determination in overcoming
obstacles to achieve what the club wanted.
Cr Antonio thanked John Harth for his persistence
that led to the installation of the system.
Aldi opposition dropped
Developer and surveyor Stephen Bowers has
dropped his action against a planning application for
an Aldi store at Highfields.
Mr Bowers, a principal of the Avenues of
Highfields development, said the construction of an
Aldi store on Highfields Road near Mary MacKillop
College would put a lot of pressure on traffic flow.
There is to be a roundabout on Highfields Road near
the intersection of Lauder Drive which runs between
the Highfields Tavern and the fast food stores.
This is also near the Mary MacKillop access to
Highfields Road.
Mr Bowers thought traffic could become
Cr Antonio said sporting clubs were a significant part
of a community, and the golf club was special to the
Goombungee community.
The Mayor said he hoped that predicted rain from excyclone
Owen would fill the dam which was at a low
level from drought conditions.
The Goombungee dam is located just to the east of
the golf course. A solar powered submersible pump was
installed at the dam, pumping into two 5000 gl tanks on
the course. Water for the greens and other parts of the
course is pumped from these tanks.
The State Government’s gaming benefit fund
provided almost $35,000 for the project
particularly congested during school drop down and
pick up times.
He thought that some students meet their parents
at the shopping centre and needed to cross Highfields
Road during these times.
He thought a more appropriate location for the Aldi
store would be on the Toowoomba Council’s 19ha
site on O’Brien Road, where a town centre is to be
developed.
He had hoped that Aldi might rethink the decision,
but Mr Bowers said he was just one person and
decided to drop the action.
I would like to wish all my loyal
customers a very Merry Xmas and
a Happy and Safe New Year.
Chic store will be closed from midday Saturday, December 22
and re-opening Wednesday, January 2, 2019
St Anne’s Anglican Church
in Highfields welcomed its new
priest last week with songs, poems
and a delightful morning tea
in the church.
Reverend Deborah Bird, who
enjoys being referred to as Rev’d
Deb, was welcomed to the parish
of Toowoomba on December
9 where she was commissioned
by Archdeacon Mark Carlyon to
be assistant priest with the responsibility
of St Anne’s.
Rev’d Deb spent almost 20
years teaching music for Edu-
Wishing our loyal
customers a safe and
happy Christmas
Rev. Deborah Bird with long serving parishioners Graham and Lynne Newton, keyboard
player Sandy Whybird and young parishioner Harper Lanigan.
cation Queensland, discovering
along the way that she was
teaching people how to be with
each other and respond to each
other, rather than just teaching
the music itself.
She said priesthood was an
idea that she shied away from,
but knew it was the right step for
her to take.
“I come to the region after
three years in Buderim with
mentors that helped me develop
my love of the arts as spiritual
practice, and a fantastic parish
that encouraged me to engage
in greater community conversations,
justice work and develop
different ways to encounter ideas
of faith,” she said.
“St Anne’s in Highfields and
St James in Toowoomba offer
some beautiful opportunities to
gather and I’m excited to join in
the way this parish explores how
we live in the world.
“Outside church life I love
to grow vegetables, go walking
with my camera, spend time under
the stars, and, of course, visiting
my young adult children.”
“I’ve never spent time in the
Darling Downs region before so
there is much for me to discover
here, along with the musical culture
of this place that I hope I’m
able to join from time to time.”
MP backs a better Christmas for the homeless
On the first day of the 12 Days
of Christmas Community Giving
Campaign, Member for Toowoomba
North Trevor Watts joined forces
with Base Services to help the
homeless.
Mr Watts spent the morning
preparing and serving meals at
the Basement Soup Kitchen with
founders Nat and Tiffany Spary.
“The Basement Soup Kitchen
serves lunchtime meals each week
day, as well as providing access to
essential services and resources for
those who need it,” Mr Watts said.
“Christmas is a difficult time of
year for many people, particularly
those who don’t have permanent
accommodation and are struggling
to make ends meet.”
“Having a safe place to eat makes
a world of difference to individuals
and families who are homeless or at
risk of homelessness.”
Base Services social worker
Tiffany Spary said Christmas is
often the toughest time of the year,
making many people feel alone or
isolated.
“The Basement Soup Kitchen
hosts a special Christmas Day lunch
where individuals and families who
have nowhere to go and no one
to celebrate with, can join us for
Christmas Day lunch,” Tiff said.
“We try to make sure everyone
we work with knows they’re
appreciated and cared about.
“Each of our Christmas Day
lunch guests will also receive an
individualised Christmas hamper to
make Christmas time a little easier
and happier.”
Members of the community
can still help Base Services make
a difference this Christmas by
donating items.
Christmas hampers could include:
Rice crackers, drinks, Poppas,
500ml soft drink, chocolates, bags of
sweets, sweet and savoury biscuits,
chips, Pringles, carry bag, can
opener, muesli
bars, Christmas
pudding,
candy canes,
gift vouchers,
coffee, food,
spaghetti,
deodorant, lip
balm, socks,
long life
Mr WATTS
Caring
milk, combs,
fruit cup.
Mr Watts commended Base
Services and all the community and
not-for-profit organisations across
Toowoomba North for their ongoing
work.
“It’s heart warming to see so
many volunteers and organisations
coming together to offer support to
those doing it tough this Christmas,”
he said.
to stress the importance of the Lock it or Lose it
Acting Superintendent Stephen Angus said the
police need your help to better serve and protect
the community.
“We are trying to engage with the community
through coffee with a cop so they can understand
how important it is that they lock their homes and
cars,” he said.
“We have a large proportion of reported crime
that relates to unlawful entry of a motor vehicles
and there are numerous instances daily where vehicles
have been left unsecured, and, sometimes
keys left in the ignition.”
Council closes Cooby Dam
Toowoomba Regional
Council has closed Cooby Dam
to the public until further notice.
Toowoomba Regional Council
Water and Waste portfolio leader
Cr Bill Cahill said Council
officers had detected an outbreak
of cyanobacteria (blue green
algae.)
“Council will close entry
gates to Loveday Cove and the
Cooby Dam wall picnic areas
and signage will be put in place
indicating the areas are closed to
the public until further notice.
Cr Cahill said the test results
meant Council had closed the
facility as a safety precaution.
“Council will conduct its
regular testing regime to
determine when the dam can reopen,”
Cr Cahill said.
“The cyanobacterial level
exceeds primary and secondary
recreational contact guideline
limits. The cyanobacteria
represent no risk to drinking
water supplies as they are
removed by the water treatment
and disinfection process.
Popular picnic spot at Cooby Dam
“Council monitors the three
dams on a weekly basis for algae
and numerous microbiological
parameters including E.coli.
“We also test chemical
parameters such as iron,
manganese, alkalinity, hardness,
ammonia, nitrate, colour,
turbidity and phosphate.
“The treatment process is also
closely monitored (daily).
“When the water leaves the
treatment plant we conduct tests
in the distribution system in
accordance with our drinking
water quality management plans.
“These plans line up with
the Water Supply (Safety and
Reliability) Act 2008.
“Even if we are not using
a particular dam, but a test
shows that levels are too high
for primary contact, swimming,
or secondary contact, boating,
we inform Council’s Parks and
Recreation Services branch
about closing a facility to the
public,” Cr Cahill said.
Major link to range crossing officially open
A major connection to the
Toowoomba second range crossing
has been officially recognised with
the opening of the Boundary Street
upgrade on Friday.
The upgrade, which took
about two years to construct, was
officially opened by Mayor Paul
Antonio and Deputy Mayor Cr
Carol Taylor.
Cr Antonio said the project was
designed to provide a connection
from the TSRC to the Torrington
industrial area and that Boundary
Street would play a vital role in
the growth of the region’s transport
network.
He said the project was a
great example of the council and
Queensland Government working
together to create real benefits for
the region.
The upgrade project was predominantly
funded by the council with
support through the Queensland
Government’s Transport Infrastructure
Development Scheme.
The council is also providing a
connection to the TSRC at Mort
Street.
Cr Antonio said the upgrade
from Bridge Street to north
of Hermitage Road included
construction of a new section
of road between Bedwell and
Pedersen streets and a major
upgrade of the Boundary Street-
Hermitage Road intersection.
“Safety at the intersection has
been greatly improved with the
straightening of the old alignment,
widening of intersections and
installation of traffic signals.” Cr
Antonio said.
The project included road
widening in the section from
Pedersen Street to Bridge Street to
the project, significant drainage
upgrades to channel storm
“There has also been significant
HIGH COUNTRY
FARMING
Pastures and right cattle helped in the drought
MILES NOLLER REPORTING
When you run Red
Poll cattle, you have to be
prepared for scepticism
from others.
When you take them to
the saleyards, they might
call them Red Angus or
whatever because their
computer program does
not include Red Poll.
But Greg and Jeanette
Wehl are among the few
who breed Red Polls and
are pleased they do.
They have properties at
Cutella near Kingsthorpe
and at Peranga and breed
both Red Polls and
Droughtmasters and their
crosses.
They believe the Red
Polls helped to get them
through the drought,
particularly at Sugarloaf
Mountain at Cutella
which missed the rain
last summer that Peranga
received.
“We find Red Poll
cows have the ability to
forage in dry seasons, and
are always on the go to
support themselves and
their calves,” they said.
“They are good doers,”
Jeanette said.
“We run breeders in
scrub country, north of
Peranga, and they supply
high quality milk even in
the driest of seasons.
“They are quiet to
handle, which provides
us with quiet calves,”
Greg said.
Greg also believes
that pastures established
at Cutella over the years
helped them get through
the dry winter.
A range of grasses and
legumes were planted,
but those that have
persisted are bambatsi,
purple pidgeon,
katamboora rhodes, and
premier digitaria.
These grasses provided
the dry bulk for their
cattle, with an Anipro
supplement, over the
winter.
Only in later months
when the dry persisted
into Spring, did they add
cottonseed into the diet.
Greg and Jeanette
acknowledge that Red
Polls are a medium
bodied beef animal, and
that crossing them with
Droughtmasters adds
some scale and size.
Nominations sought for
weeds pests committee
Residents with a passion for controlling weeds and pests
are invited to apply for one of up to four community positions
on the Toowoomba Region Pest Management Advisory
Committee.
The role of the committee is to advise the council on all
matters relevant to pest management.
Cr Anne Glasheen, who will chair the Advisory
Committee, said it was important for the council to listen to
ideas and recommendations from a wide cross section of the
community in relation to pest management.
“Weeds and pests do not respect property boundaries and
have an impact on the whole community,” Cr Glasheen said.
“The committee will include representatives from
Council, State Government, Regional Natural Resource
Management bodies, industry and the community. They
should have the ability to represent and liaise with sections
of the community and relay issues of community concern to
the Pest Management Advisory Committee and Council,” Cr
Glasheen said.
“They should also have an understanding of pest
management and the legislative requirements relating to it.
Nomination letters can be e-mailed to Parks&\n RecAdmin@
toowoombaRC.qld.gov.au or may be posted to PO Box 3021,
Toowoomba Village Fair, 4350.
Nominations close 5pm Thursday, January 31, 2013.
They now run a commercial
herd of Red
Polls, a commercial herd
of Droughtmasters, and
a commercial herd of
Droughtmaster/Red Poll
cross, always using Red
Poll bulls.
After breeding Red
Polls for 30 years, they
are increasingly confident
that the breed produces a
quality carcase of good
meat.
Their weight gains are
good, calving problems
are rare, cows are good
mothers with adequate
milk, and temperament
is good.
They generally sell
through the saleyards at
Dalby and are pleased
with their weights and
prices.
While the Red Poll
remains outside the list of
popular cattle breeds, the
Senapol (a newer breed
to Australia) is based on
Red Poll, and Red Poll
genetics are said to have
been used by some Santa
breeders for the poll gene,
to maintain the rich red
colour, and to introduce
some of the other Red
Poll characteristics.
Greg and Jeanette say
they never really chose
Red Polls …the Red
Polls chose them.
Their first heifer was a
gift on a special occasion,
from a neighbour the late
Eric Volker, at Mt Rascal,
followed by another
shortly after.
They then set up a stud,
and have been breeding
Red Polls ever since.
From taking a low
profile because the
breed is one of the least
popular, their confidence
in Red Polls as good
commercial beef animals
has continued to grow,
and they now believe the
breed has lots to offer the
industry, even in drought
conditions.
Wehl in May at a Landcare inspection of their
pasture at Sugarloaf Mountain going into winter.
The dry feed with a supplement kept their cattle
going, although the last couple of months before
rain in October were difficult and they destocked
selling some and moving some to Peranga which
started the year in a better situation following
summer rain.
Heritage charity golf day
Local technician shines
on world stage
Service manager at Hughes Car Sales Adam Bradford with the award he won in the Asian
competition in India. He now goes on to contest the world title.
More than 200 golfers took part in the Heritage charity golf day.
Funds raised at this year’s
Heritage charity golf day
will push total donations past
$800,000 over the event’s 21
year history.
Heritage Bank celebrated
their 2018 charity golf day at
City Golf Club last Friday, December
7, with more than 200
members of the local business
community teeing off for a great
cause.
For the past 21 years, funds
raised from the event have been
distributed via grants to different
community and charity organisations
right around southern
Queensland.
Heritage Bank CEO Peter
Lock said supporting our people
and communities was the
core of Heritage.
“It’s something that we are
very passionate about and that
translates through to the Golf
Day. The funds raised go towards
helping a huge number
of local organisations continue
doing their fantastic work in the
community. Through the Golf
Day, we’re delighted to bring
the business community together
for a great cause and for the
benefit of all.”
Mr Lock said the event continued
to go from strength to
strength over the past two decades.
“We’re always amazed to
see the camaraderie and goodwill
from everyone involved in
making the golf day a success
year after year. Thank you to
our generous sponsors, players
and volunteer golf day committee
for your efforts and continued
support.”
This year’s beneficiaries are
Blush Cancer Care Inc., Compass
India.
When he returns, he will test his knowledge and
skills against the top Mahindra mechanics in the
world and, in turn, represent Hughes Car Sales -
Toowoomba Mahindra on the world stage.
It’s an achievement that didn’t surprise his boss
Russell Hughes who speaks highly of Mr Bradford
and the staff who work around him.
Mr Hughes took on the Mahindra franchise
about eight years ago and focuses predominantly
on late model used cars and commercials.
He wants people to know that a low price
doesn’t mean low quality and that the Mahindra
offers pretty much everything you get in a ute over
the $60,000 mark.
“We have seen a dramatic increase in Mahindra
sales in the past two years and that’s because of
the new generation pick-up that’s been available,”
he said.
“Farmers really like the vehicle because of its
reliability, its performance, its low-cost maintenance
and, of course, its low purchase price which
is about $35,000 including all the add-ons.”
“We want to try and get the Australia public out
of the thought process of needing to buy a Toyota
or a Mitsubishi.
“Adam’s award gives Mahindra owners or potential
buyers the confidence of knowing we have
a technician of this calibre and that they can freely
talk to him at any stage.”
The dealership also has a pastoral package and
tradie package, allowing farmers and tradies to get
into a Mahindra suited to their budget.
To take one for a test drive or to find out more
about them, contact Hughes Car Sales - Toowoomba
Mahindra on 4638 5822 or visit their dealership.
Waste Collection
and Waste Facilities
Our bins don’t get a public holiday.
Bin collection will continue as normal.
Bins are to be out for service by
6am on the collection day (by 5am
in the Toowoomba CBD and on
Christmas Day).
Waste facilities will be open for all
days except Christmas day when sites
will be closed.
When trucks are about,
keep a look out!
In courts and dead ends, our waste
trucks have to turn around and reverse,
and the drivers can’t see all around
them at the one time. Please be sure
to supervise your children, particularly
on bin collection days. It’s common for
kids to ride bikes, skateboards and play
games in the street. Remember that
our trucks are big and kids are small,
so please keep a safe distance from
our vehicles.
PIK-UP A GREAT DEAL
AT HUGHES CAR SALES
“When the MAHINDRA PIK-UP first hit our shores around a decade ago, it revolutionised the way we looked at a
WORK UTE in Australia. With a very ATTRACTIVE PRICE POINT and IMPRESSIVE CARRYING CAPACITY, the
vehicle soon established itself as a TOUGH, RELIABLE WORKHORSE that wasn’t going to break the bank. Today, the
Pik-Up is back, bringing with it a number of cosmetic and mechanical changes that will appeal to fans of the original
offering and will just as quickly impress buyers new to the model.
Extensive local testing has seen the Pik-Up strenuously put through its paces – and then adapted and modified to help
it thrive in harsh Australian conditions. One of the big pluses is it has retained its LOW COST PRICE TAG and you’ll be
spoilt for choice with two spec levels – the S6 (base model) with fabric seats, air-conditioning, steel wheels and a MP3/
radio and the S10 which comes complete with extras like 16-inch alloys, cruise control, central locking and a reversing
camera, to name just a few. You’ll soon discover there’s A LOT MORE GRUNT as well, with the six-speed manual
gearbox and more powerful engine giving the driver total confidence, no matter how rugged the terrain. The Pik-Up
boasts an UPGRADED 2.2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine with an improved 103kW and 330Nm to call on when
needed. Peak torque is available from 1600rpm to 2800rpm. And with noise control and the added comfort of arm and
head rests, you’ll soon forget it’s A WORK UTE and find it closer to a diesel passenger car instead.
Everything from the vehicle’s exterior to its headlights and badging have been given a sleek new look while inside,
you’ve a got a ROOMY AND SPACIOUS CABIN that offers EXCELLENT VISIBILITY To ensure new owners can tailor
the vehicle to their exact wishes, there’s a host of QUALITY ACCESSORIES available including WINCH COMPATIBLE
STEEL BULLBARS and STAINLESS-STEEL NUDGE BARS snorkels and a wide selection of trays in both colour-coded
or galvanised steel (as well as aluminium). There’s also a SUSPENSION UPGRADE and TOWBAR OPTION.
There are four colours to choose from – classic Arctic White, De-Sat Silver, Napoli Black and the striking Red Rage.
For more information, or to test-drive the latest
Mahindra Pik-Up, contact the team at Hughes Car
Sales on 4638 5822 or call into the showroom at
attracts good crowd
The big Christmas event for many
Highfields residents is always the Crave
Christmas Spectacular, and on Saturday
night a good crowd turned out for this year’s
event despite the threat of wet weather.
Crave is organised by the Mary MacKillop
Catholic College Parents and Friends.
The big attractions were 50 market stalls,
more than 20 food venues, rides for children,
and live music venues, and generally all the
fun of the fair.
Organisers were encouraged by
predictions of storms to locate many stalls
and rides under shelter, and the spreading
layout provided people with more room to
easily see what they wanted to see.
It is the second year that Crave has been
conducted by the P and F and has become a
major fundraiser for them.
The money raised is used to help with
infrastructure at the school, and this year
went to constructing permanent shade for
year 1 and 2 students.
Gail Walker - Life is about evolving, opening up and trying new experiences.
Q. Tell me about yourself
and what you do.
A. My name is Gail Walker.
I have been in Highfields since
2001 and my favourite hangout
is the Gail Walker Swim
School because we have a lot
of fun down there.
I have been a professional
swimming coach and business
owner for 40 years and started
teaching when I was 13 years
old when I taught my baby
brother how to swim.
I was a motor mechanic by
trade and I have had lots of
variable jobs and experiences
which, in turn, have evolved
me into the person I am now,
happy and still growing.
Q. When did you figure out
that you may be able to make
a living off being a professional
swim coach?
A. I was a swimmer and
swam at state and national level.
It all started unexpectedly
when I had a severe car accident
and was incapacitated for
a considerable amount of time.
Water played a large part in
my recovery. During my therapy
sessions one day the pool
lessee was short staffed and
asked for my help.
I didn’t have a lot of use of
my legs at the time so I asked
him if he had a tyre tube and
a couple of pieces of rope so I
could pen the kids into a safe
environment.
From that moment I was
hooked.
I have been fortunate to represent
our country and have
taught overseas.
I have enjoyed many a journey
with babies through to
adults and produced swimmers
to regional, state, national and
international level and those
swimmers have gone on to win
medals here and overseas and
set records as well.
Incredibly, some of my
swimmers have achieved these
levels out of a 13m pool. A moment
in time.
Q. How important is it to
connect on a personal level
with both the athletes and
children you teach?
A. My personal belief is
that you need to become at
one with the water and to do
that you have to build a relationship
with the swimmer on
how their body responds in
the water. You have to be very
calm and patient and guide the
person into building up their
confidence.
The one thing I pride myself
on is to be a lateral thinker and
keep an open mind to the experiences
and try not to rush
them.
Q. What is one piece of advice
you’d give to someone
who wants to own their own
business one day?
A. Have fun, stay open
minded and set realistic goals.
A community is our village and
our connection to each other.
Life should be about people
and when you get involved in
a business you will find that
when you open yourself up
and come with a plan of being
honest, true, excited and willing
to learn then you will grow
forward.
Be unique, keep coming up
with concepts and ideas and
involve the community into
your business. Be fair in your
honesty and you will find that
you will grow strong in yourself,
business and community.
Q. What is something you
would change about Highfields
to make it an even better
place to live?
A. Personally, I’d like to see
roads built for pushbikes. Get
people to walk and ride without
being on the highway, have
their own highway. I’d also
like to see a train come back
out this way, so we can actually
sit, relax and enjoy the moments
of travel.
Q. Your family is known
for being extremely sporty,
did that help you chase your
goals growing up?
Absolutely. For every action
there’s a reaction and for
everything you try, it changes
you into something new.
Life is about evolving, opening
up and trying new experiences
and who better to share
it with than family and friends.
Q. What is there left to
achieve for Gail Walker?
I’m climbing the age calendar,
but I still have a great passion
for what I do.
I also do a lot of work with
rehabilitation and its been a
lovely pleasure to do that.
I’m very driven by people
and I think the learning never
stops. I’ve always come from
the family background where
its about giving and helping
people. As long as I still have
the passion, I will continue to
do what I do.
