Orland Park Village Board
More drainage and water main
improvements coming this winter
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
Round It Up
A brief recap of action and discussion from the Dec.
19 meeting of the Orland Park Village Board.
• In a 6-0 vote, the Village Board approved the
appointment of Robert Sullivan and Patrick Duggan to
the Orland Park Retiree Health Insurance Trust Board
of Trustees.
• As part of the Consent Agenda, trustees voted 6-0 to
allow the Consolidated School District 230 bass fishing
team to use Lake Sedgewick for a two- or three-day
ice fishing event in December 2018, or January or
February 2019.
• Trustees voted 6-0 to use Water Fund Contingency
Fund money to pay Airy’s Inc., of Tinley Park, in the
amount of $72,564.82 for work performed to repair a
water main break at 151st Street and 88th Avenue.
Just because winter is here
does not mean work stops in
the Village of Orland Park.
The Village Board voted
6-0 Monday, Dec. 17, to
approve a proposal from
Burke LLC, of Rosemont,
to perform drainage and water
main improvements this
winter in the Fairway subdivision.
Mayor Keith Pekau
was absent.
The proposal is for the
guaranteed maximum price
of $2.7 million. According
to Village documents, if the
project were to exceed that
price, Burke LLC would be
responsible to pay for the remaining
balance.
“This is a continuation of
a water main improvement
project that was started in
2017,” Public Works Director
John Ingram said.
“There’s a little bit different
of an issue with this one [in]
that the work is going to be
done over the winter.”
Ingram said last winter
the Village did a similar water
main replacement. As a
result, he was able to note
some benefits for performing
this type of work over
the winter. They were: less
impact on residents, as they
are less likely to be outside,
and less dust and noise.
“It worked out very well
and was very well received
by the residents,” Ingram
said.
Ingram noted this project
was for the third phase
of a four-phase project to
complete water main improvements
in the Fairway
subdivision. In order to get
through the permit process
and start the work by the end
of January 2019, Ingram said
it was necessary to move this
from the Public Works Committee
meeting earlier in the
evening and before the Village
Board that same night.
Later during the meeting,
the trustees voted 6-0 to
postpone discussion or voting
on an ethical standards
of conduct ordinance. In
making the motion, Trustee
Carole Griffin Ruzich said
she had asked staff to work
on the ordinance with Village’s
legal counsel.
“It came to light during
a meeting several months
ago when a resident spoke
about that there might be
some gaps in our ethical ordinance,”
she said. “I took a
look at it and asked staff to
work with the Village attorney
in drafting one.”
But the mayor asked if
the trustees would hold off
visit us online at
www.opprairie.com
on talking about or voting
on the matter while he was
away. Ruzich said she felt it
was appropriate to postpone
discussion and vote on the
item until a future meeting.
Trustee James Dodge,
serving as mayor pro-tem,
agreed. He also suggested
the extra time could be used
to submit any additional
questions or comments to
Village staff in constructing
the ordinance.
“I think there are a number
of things in here that are
worthwhile for us to look at
— and probably a couple of
suggestions and edits,” he
said.
According to Village documents,
the ordinance establishes
“ethical standards of
conduct for appointed and
hired employees and public
officials of the Village of Orland
Park, whether compensated
or not.”
The item was postponed
to the first meeting of January.
Two slates, one independent line up for
three Village trustee seats in April election
D135 sees single
challenger, Orland Fire
seats uncontested and
more in local election
Bill Jones, Editor
On the opening day of election
filings Dec. 10, party lines
were drawn for three Orland
Park trustee spots up for grabs
in the April 2 election, according
to information provided by
the Village Clerk’s office. By the
time filings closed on Dec. 17,
an independent candidate also
entered the fray.
A People Over Politics slate
— supported by Mayor Keith
Pekau — features candidates
William R. Healy, Michael R.
Milani and Cynthia Nelson Katsenes.
The Orland Integrity Party
is to put up three candidates
against them in incumbent
Trustee Carole Griffin Ruzich
and candidates Kelly O’Brien
and Devin Hodge.
And independent candidate
Mohanned El Natour filed to run
before Dec. 17.
The Orland Integrity Party
formally announced its slate the
day after the filing period opened
in a series of press releases. In
one, they pledged to “serve the
community with transparency
and honor as public servants.”
Ruzich is a two-term incumbent
who runs a law firm
called Griffin & Gallagher LLC.
O’Brien works as an economic
development specialist, and
manages a team for the Alliance
for Regional Development and
Chicago Central Area Committee.
And Hodge is the chief operations
officer for Argonne National
Laboratory’s Computing,
Environment and Life Sciences
organization, as well as a member
of the Orland School District
135 Board of Education.
The People Over Politics party
issued a press release of its
own Thursday, Dec. 14, hailing
the endorsement of Pekau and
saying its members will “work
cooperatively with the mayor
and the Village Board to provide
exceptional, cooperative and
transparent government focused
on the people of Orland Park,
improve government efficiency
to keep taxes low while maintaining
high-quality services
and promote economic development
to grow and diversify the
Village’s economic footprint” if
elected.
Milani serves with the Economic
Development Advisory
Board and Technology Commission,
and works for IBM as
a business development executive.
Healy is a Certified Public
Accountant and holds a position
on the Zoning Board of Appeals
for the Village. Katsenes
is a licensed real estate broker
and previously served with the
Orland Fire Protection District
Board of Trustees.
Consolidated High School District
230
For the Consolidated High
School District 230 Board of
Education, incumbent Patrick
O’Sullivan filed to run for reelection.
He is to be joined on
the ballot by candidates Mike
Hardek, Dave O’Connor and
Jeanne A. Bailey.
O’Sullivan, Hardek and
O’Connor announced the day
election filings closed they are to
run as a slate called 230 United.
O’Sullivan, president of PRO
Insurance Services, is seeking
his fourth term. O’Conner, an
attorney who is the founder and
managing partner of O’Conner
Law Offices, is seeking his first
term with the board. Hardek, a
commercial banker, also is seeking
his first term.
Current Board President Richard
Nogal and Board Member
Denis Ryan did not file to seek
re-election.
Orland Park Public Library Board
of Trustees
For the Orland Park Public
Library Board, three candidates
filed to run. They are Bridget
Mary Lindbloom, Daniel F.
Sanchez and incumbent trustee
Charles McShane, according to
Village records.
There are only two seats up
for grabs in the April 2019 election.
The terms of McShane and
Diane Jennings come to a close
in 2019. Jennings did not file to
run for re-election.
It is a nonpartisan race.
Orland Fire Protection District
Board of Trustees
For the Orland Fire Protection
District Board of Trustees, only
incumbents Jayne Schirmacher
and John Brudnak had filed as
of deadline, according to district
spokesperson Ray Hanania.
Brudnak currently serves as
president pro tem of the board,
while Schirmacher serves as
treasurer. Theirs are the only two
seats up for grabs in 2019.
Garage fire damages Orland Park
home, but no one seriously injured
Bill Jones, Editor
From Dec. 20
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Flooded gym forces D91 Christmas
program to Rialto stage
Some 500 students from Milne-
Kelvin Grove School District 91
performed Dec. 18 at the Rialto
Square Theatre in downtown Joliet
as part of the school’s annual “I
Love Christmas” program.
This year’s program was extra
special because of the venue. Choral
director and teacher Sarah Randolph
said most years the students perform
their program at the school’s old
gym. But roughly a month ago, flooding
issues forced the school to seek
a new location. The school’s new
gym was not ideal, as it is smaller
than the old gym and does not have
a stage, so Randolph reached out to
the community for help.
But at first no location was big
enough to accommodate hundreds
of students and hundreds of parents.
If they were, the stage was not free
anyway, Randolph said.
“I thought, ‘I’ll try the Rialto,’”
she said.
She figured it was a long shot to
get a professional-grade theater to
offer up its space for elementary students,
but it worked. They had Tuesday
morning open, but only for a few
hours, and the students could not use
the stage to practice or prepare.
“I said, ‘I can do it,’” Randolph
recalled. “We have the best children
in the world.”
A garage fire the afternoon of
Thursday, Dec. 20, damaged a home
in Orland Park, but no one was seriously
injured in the blaze, according
to fire officials.
Firefighters were called at 12:30
p.m. to a home in the 17600 block
of Westwood Drive, where they
found the property “consumed with
heavy smoke” and a fire in an attached
garage, according to a press
release issued the same day by Orland
Park Fire Protection District
spokesperson Ray Hanania. The
fire was contained in the garage and
extinguished, but smoke damage
spread throughout the property, Hanania
wrote.
Two family members reportedly
were treated — for smoke
irritation, according to Hanania —
at the scene and released in good
health.
The cause of the fire remains under
investigation, according to the
release.
Exploring Textiles expo features creator community
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
As the temperature drops,
most folks enjoy cuddling
up with a cozy blanket or
heavy quilt. But how often
do we consider the craftsmanship,
community and
history behind this functional
art form?
On Dec. 14 and 15, the
Orland Park Public Library
hosted its Exploring Textiles
expo, giving patrons
the opportunity to learn
more about needlework,
fabric arts and handmade
textiles from a variety of
local craftspeople. The program
— which was held
from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on both
Friday and Saturday — also
featured live demonstrations
detailing tips and techniques
that can be used by
hobbyists and advanced artists.
“We want to let the community
know that needle
arts aren’t dying,” said Kelly
Cuci, the library’s Outreach
Services manager, the
morning of Dec. 14. “People
are really involved with
them. We’ve got these great
clubs here, and they’re helping
us out with this event.”
Along with exploring
the intricate art form, the
library invited attendees to
join the local community of
creators.
“I know that my grandmother
sewed, my parents
sewed and now I’m sewing,”
Cuci said. “It seems to
run in families and in communities.
People get close,
and they share traditional
sewing techniques.”
Wendy Lynn, of Orland
Park, was on hand, doing
demonstrations and representing
two groups, the
Waterfall Glen Chapter of
the Embroiderers’ Guild of
America and the Country
Cupboard Alumnae. She
explained that the Country
Cupboard organization was
first developed at an Orland
Park needlework store that
closed in 2017.
“The owner, Barb Dvorak,
had created such a
community for us that we
couldn’t stand the thought
of not seeing each other,
so we find different places
to get together and stitch,”
Lynn said as she worked
on a wool appliqué piece
fashioned after a Baltimore
quilt. “One of the places that
we meet regularly is Peace
Memorial Church, and we
tend to get together here at
Orland Park Public Library
on the second Wednesday of
every month.”
Professional Art Quilt Alliance
member and Orland
Park resident Roslyn DeBoer
— who manipulates fabric
to create nature-inspired
scenes — also said she appreciates
the camaraderie of
the textile community and
the history of its techniques.
“It is kind of a full-circle
thing for me, because I was
taught yarn art when I was
a girl,” DeBoer said. “I can
go back to my great-grandmother,
so I’m the fourth
generation that I know has
done this. My grandmother
and my great-grandmother
created things for
necessity, and my mom and
her sisters did it for hobbies.
I can take it one step further
and go to an art form with
it.”
DeBoer often incorporates
family into her contemporary
designs by finding
inspiration in the words
of her sisters or making
special pieces influenced by
to pick up a book, and
she was compelled to see
what the expo had to offer.
“I love fabric art, quilting
and embroidery; I used
to do a lot of it myself, and
I got away from it,” said
Neumann, who is currently
focused on painting and
drawing. “So, I wanted to
see what’s new. I love the
colors and the patterns of
fabric art. There’s just so
much you can do. The possibilities
are endless.”
Frankfort director’s
Megan Schuller
Assistant Editor
Frankfort native and film
director Robert Alaniz and
several of the actors with
whom he recently worked
call the southwest suburbs
both their set and their home.
And members of the
“Heavens to Betsy 2” cast
and crew got to celebrate
Announcements
Welcome home!
their work close to home,
when they attended the encore
premiere of the movie
on Dec. 6 at Emagine Entertainment’s
Frankfort Theatre.
“Heavens to Betsy 2” was
Alaniz’s ninth film, and he
made it clear that the movie
is a crossover between a
Christian and general audience
film.
“You don’t have to be
Christian or even religious
to appreciate it,” Alaniz said.
“The sequel is a continuation
of the first story, but I never
intended for there to be a sequel.”
Gatto’s Restaurant in New
Lenox, the Frankfort Public
Library, and a quiet Frankfort
neighborhood were featured
in the film in different
scenes.
Homer Glen resident Gary
Gow, a science teacher at
Jerling Jr. High School in
Orland Park, played the selfish
television show host Tandum
Dackery. In addition to
being a teacher and actor,
Gow also coaches softball
and directs the school’s annual
musicals.
“It’s so heartwarming to
see so much support from
colleagues and friends,”
Gow said. “This is a good
opportunity for me to pursue
my craft of acting without
having to move far away to
Los Angeles or New York.”
Science teacher Sarah
Callis works alongside Gow
at Jerling. She was one of
many teachers that came out
to support their colleague in
his acting career.
“It’s fun to see him play
a despicable character, because
that’s not him at all,”
Callis said. “He is so softspoken,
so to see him cast as
a jerk is hysterical.”
Alaniz said Gow is a natural.
And the director plans to
work with him as the lead
character in a future film.
Chicago-area native Jim
O’Heir, known for his role
as Jerry Gergich in the NBC
sitcom “Parks and Recreation,”
is in both the original
“Heavens to Betsy” and the
sequel.
“If [Jim O’Heir] gave a
real sermon, I’d listen to it
all day,” executive producer
Michael Stoskus said with a
laugh, of working with him.
Despite being a prominent
character in the movie,
O’Heir was only in town to
shoot for four days, according
to Alaniz.
High time for tea
A video message from
O’Heir played before the
movie, apologizing for his
absence at the premiere and
telling the audience about
his experience with filming
both movies.
“I was unsure if I had
the time to do ‘Heavens to
Betsy,’ but once I read the
script I knew I had to do it,”
O’Heir said. “Next thing I
know, I’m in Chicago, filming.”
O’Heir called the movie a
“sweet message” with a lesson.
“Watch what you wish
for,” he said.
Pastor Column
Ruminating on the gift of time
The Rev. Michael Foley
Our Lady of the Woods
Any trip to a Las Vegas
casino reveals
an environment
stripped of time. There are
no clocks. There are no
windows to show forth day
or night. The lighting in
the room remains the same,
even as the hours change.
This design takes a sense
of time away from the
patrons, so that they might
play longer and increase the
revenues of the casino.
In a sense, Vegas is a
reflection of the modern
world. We are told that
New York is the “city that
never sleeps.” This is true
of all cities today. Unlike
our ancestors just a few
generations ago, the darkness
does not imprison us.
Electric lights glow 24
hours. In our homes, we
can be on our phones, computers
or TVs at any hour.
The seasons are modulated
by air-conditioning and
heating systems.
In all of this, we lose the
rhythm of time and season.
One of the gifts of my
faith is that time itself
cannot be ignored. The liturgical
calendar has helped
many people keep some
perspective on time.
In Advent, the readings
from the Bible speak of a
world in darkness and a
desire for God’s light. This
is appropriate for this time
of the year. The religious
calendar calls us to times of
waiting, to celebration, to
fasting and repentance, and
then to joy again throughout
the year. For those who
are regular in worship, this
can help focus on the passage
of time.
Christians believe in
keeping a Sabbath, although
for most Christians
“Sabbath” occurs on
Sunday and we call it “The
Lord’s Day.” But the idea is
very similar to our Jewish
brothers and sisters who
mark the actual Sabbath (it
is where we get the word
Saturday from).
By taking time each
week to stop what we are
doing and pray, we are reminding
ourselves that the
treadmill of work is not the
focus of our lives.
Sadly, like the absence
of clocks in the casino, we
are losing the meaning of
Sunday. Many people work.
The stores are open. Sports
have become the new religion.
Sunday is another day
to watch pro football, along
with Monday and Thursday.
In monastic communities,
there is a rhythm of daily
prayer. The monks pray
together to mark the break
of day, the noon of day, the
evening and night. It is quite
beautiful to experience.
In the secular world, Jan.
1 marks the beginning of
a New Year. It is the one
holiday often symbolized
by an hourglass or a calendar.
It reminds us that time
is a gift that can deepen
our lives or a prison that
confines us.
If we let it, time is our
teacher. Time calls us to
prioritize our lives. Time
reminds us that we are
human and will not accomplish
all we wish to do.
Time can teach us to cherish
the moments that are in
front of us.
In the seminary, we had
a psychologist who spoke
forcefully of the need to
organize our time. He
explained that, for a healthy
person, a day is not the
only organizing principle.
We must also use the
concept of the week and the
year to guide us (weekly
day off, annual vacation
and annual retreat). I have
found his wisdom helpful.
In faith, we are reminded
that we must organize our
lives around the rhythm of
the day, the week and the
seasons. Anything less will
leave us impoverished. As
the new year begins, let us
see time as our teacher and
a gift from God.
Ava Logan shares classic jazz vocal talent with area
Orland Park resident
a veterinarian by day,
professional musician
by night
Meredith Dobes, Freelance Reporter
Ava Logan’s resume is as unique
and powerful as her voice.
The Orland Park resident began
singing almost as soon as she could
talk, and progressed in her dedication
to and mastery of her craft
through the years.
Along the way, she attended
Yale University and the University
of Pennsylvania to become a
veterinarian, performed in other
countries, portrayed her jazz idols
in Chicago musicals and created
her first album, “So Many Stars.”
Last year, Logan performed at
her 40th high school reunion at National
Cathedral School in Washington,
D.C., which she said was a
highlight for her.
The singer grew up in Washington,
D.C., and has lived in the Chicago
area for the past 25 years.
She said she always had a passion
for music, and she pursued
this interest by taking voice lessons
in grades 6-8, acting in high school,
continuing voice lessons in college
and participating in the Proof of the
Pudding a cappella group at Yale.
She also was a founding member
of the Whim ’n Rhythm a cappella
group at Yale.
After graduation, Logan was not
involved in music for roughly 13
years until she moved to the Chicago
area.
“My late father was sick, and I
was singing to the radio once after
taking him to the hospital for
chemotherapy,” Logan said. “I
was singing, and he remarked, ‘I
forgot you sing. You have a beautiful
voice. You should be singing
in church.’ And so I began taking
voice lessons after that.”
Soon after moving to the Chicago
area, Logan was hired to perform
with a wedding band. She did
this on the weekends for roughly
seven years while working for biomedical
research company G.D.
Searle LLC in Skokie during the
week. She worked there for roughly
10 years, until Pfizer bought the
company and moved jobs out of
the Chicago area.
She said she was happy about the
buyout. She took her severance pay
and began singing on her own.
“I would go to jam sessions,
meeting musicians, and they began
referring me for different jobs,”
she said. “That’s how it’s been
since about 2002 or 2003.”
As Logan began performing
more and to larger audiences, a
colleague referred her to a big band
gig in California. She performed at
Mendocino Music Festival in California
and has been performing
with big bands ever since.
She has traveled to Russia, New
York and Florida, and performs locally
multiple times a month in the
Chicago area.
“The world is wide open,” she
said. “I’m always looking forward
to the next opportunity.”
Musical style
Logan said she is inspired by
jazz singers Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah
Vaughan, Dakota Staton, Nancy
Wilson, Kellye Gray, Nat King
Cole and Frank Sinatra.
“I grew up listening to the music
my parents were playing, and
so I’m sure this seeped in there,”
she said. “When I went to college,
this is the kind of music the a cappella
women’s groups were singing.”
Logan portrayed Fitzgerald in
a Chicago Black Ensemble Theater
production of “Ella Fitzgerald
- First Lady of Song” roughly 15
years ago and also portrayed Wilson
in the theater group’s production
of “Dynamite Divas.”
“It was just too cool,” Logan
said. “This is really what I wanted
to do when I went away to college.
My parents, of course, didn’t think
I’d be able to support myself doing
this. They wanted me to be able to
put a roof over my head and food
in my mouth, but it’s been a dream
to do this.
“I can’t even believe I’m doing
Ava Logan performs earlier this year during a Village of Orland Park concert at Crescent Park.
Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
this at the level I’m doing it at this
point in my life.”
Logan studied with Norman
Simmons, a pianist for jazz greats
who shared with Logan techniques
her idols used and how to tell a
story through performance.
“All the greats were storytellers,”
Logan said. “They didn’t just
stand there and sing; they were telling
a story. There’s a lot going on
when you’re performing and trying
to get a story out — things you’re
doing with your voice, technique,
feeling. It takes a lot of years to
relax and be able to tell the story.”
In 2008, Logan released her
first album, “So Many Stars.” Jazz
guitarist Henry Johnson, who has
worked with Joe Williams and
Ramsey Lewis, produced the album.
Logan said it took roughly six
months to create the album, and
Johnson recruited professional musicians
he worked with to play for
the project.
“It was really an amazing experience,”
she said. “I always wanted
to make a record that would be
played on the radio. It was definitely
a labor of love.
“That was my rookie CD, and
now that I’m more seasoned I
would love to make another one. I
haven’t conceptually come to grips
on how, but I’ve got my sights set
on it.”
Logan said she would also like
to perform more on a national level
going forward by seeking out larger
gigs.
“I’ve had the good fortune that
I’ve been called and available for
gigs,” she said. “Now, I need to
take stock in if I want to perform
on a more national level, I need to
make it happen. I’m not sure what
that looks like quite yet, but I think
I know at least some of what I need
to do. I’m living proof that you
never know.”
To musicians starting out, Logan
said she encourages them to keep
doing what they are doing, because
you never know where your gift is
going to take you.
Local performances
Currently, Logan provides consulting
services and part-time veterinary
relief work at clinics during
the week and remains flexible
to perform during evenings and
weekends. She typically performs
five or six shows a month.
For many years, Logan performed
regularly at 94 West Grille
& Tavern in Orland Park. After taking
a break for a couple of years,
she returned to the spot for shows
in October and November, and she
said she hopes to continue to perform
there in 2019.
“It’s really a great hang,” she
said. “It brings people together,
and I get a lot of support performing
there.”
Logan performs once a month
with Steve Koerner’s Eddie Stevens
3 Band in Naperville. She
performs quarterly for the WDCB
Vocal Jazz Spotlight at venues
around the area.
Last summer, Logan performed
at the Orland Park Public Library,
and she said she plans to perform
there again next summer.
Logan keeps her website up-todate
with upcoming performances,
and she said all are welcome to
attend a performance. For more
information, visit www.avalogan.
com.
“I feel really blessed to be able
to do this on a professional level at
this point in my life,” Logan said.
“You never know where things are
going to take you.”

The Dish
Lou Malnati’s in Tinley Park expands to full-service restaurant
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Contributing Editor
Not long after opening the
Lou Malnati’s carryout and
delivery store in Tinley Park
in 2009, owner Marc Malnati
saw an opportunity to
expand and offer a full-service
restaurant to his loyal
customers.
His vision finally came
to fruition Dec. 3, when after
nearly four months of
construction Lou Malnati’s
re-opened to the community
with more food options and
dining space at the famous
Chicago pizzeria franchise.
The establishment, best
known for its deep dish pizza,
now offers more menu
options at its Tinley Park
location, in addition to the
250 seats that were added
for dining.
“Our carryouts have a way
more simplified menu, so
Tinley Park is getting to see
a whole bunch of items that
they haven’t experienced before,”
Malnati said.
In addition to the already
existing menu items — including
customer favorites
such as The Malnati Chicago
classic, the “Lou” and
the cheese deep dish pizzas
— there are three new pastas,
two new desserts, three
sandwiches and a salad.
“We try to do things so
that it’s a homemade, fresh
menu,” Malnati said. “You
can’t have too many items
and be able to keep those
standards.”
Some of the new menu
items featured are the chicken
BBQ club salad, which
is now offered in two sizes,
has romaine lettuce, grilled
chicken, sun-dried tomatoes,
shredded mozzarella, cheddar
and Volpi salami bits, served
with the restaurant’s club
dressing and tortilla chips.
The chicken Louie pasta
($10.25) has tender pieces of
chicken, fettuccine and cream
sauce baked with mozzarella.
And the beef sandwich
($8.95) — which has tender
beef smothered with melted
mozzarella, served with a
choice of fries or fresh fruit
and cottage cheese — is also
now available.
Those familiar with the
Chicago staple have become
accustomed to the deep dish
and thin crust pizzas that
draw customers there in the
first place. Guests also can
customize their own pizza,
adding as many or as few
toppings as they want.
“[My dad] was very instrumental
in making Chicago
pizza what it would
become,” Malnati said. “He
was a guy who like to fiddle
around in the kitchen.”
His father and founder of
the restaurant, Lou, died from
cancer in 1978, and Marc has
taken the reigns on the company
ever since. Lou Malnati’s
now has 53 Chicago-area
locations and three in Arizona.
Tinley Park is the 31st
store to open, and the only
one in the history of the company
to be converted from a
carryout and delivery store to
a full-dining restaurant.
“What I’ve loved is that
our regular carryout customers
who have been coming
here for almost 10 years are
all saying, ‘Hey, can I go see
[the restaurant]?’ and so we
had somebody set up, just
touring people, like walking
them through the door
and taking them around the
restaurant,” Malnati said.
“[They say], ‘Oh I can’t wait
to bring my family in here.’”
The location still offers
its carryout and delivery
options, which are now attached
and just a doorway
away from the seating area.
There also is a bar where
customers waiting to be
seated or waiting for their
carryout order can sit.
The “Lou” pizza is one of Lou Malnati’s most popular pizzas, which has spinach mix, garlic, basil, onion, mushroom and
sliced Roma tomato, with three cheeses on the restaurant’s Buttercrust. Photos by Thomas Czaja/22nd Century Media
“We’re imaging we’re going
to crush it, and we have
been,” Malnati said. “We’ve
been doing pretty good.”
Malnati said that none of
the locations of Lou Malnati’s
are the same, with each
giving its own unique feel
to the area. He added that
he does not like referring to
the stores as a chain, but “a
series of neighborhood restaurants.”
“What we try to do here is:
It’s always been to create an
urban-feeling restaurant,” he
said. “My belief is that in the
outer suburbs — and I would
call this a ways to get to the
city — to create something
Pictured is the inside of Lou Malnati’s restaurant in Tinley
Park, which recently was converted from a carryout and
delivery spot to a full-service restaurant.
that feels like you’re in the
city, it’s novel and it’s fun
for the people who come and
visit us.”
He said he pictures the
newly renovated Lou Malnati’s
to be a hub for the
area — a place one can bring
their sports team to for a
celebration, have a business
lunch and family dinner.
“I think it’ll be a real gathering
spot for this neighborhood,”
Malnati said.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
with Tyler Villa
Tyler Villa is a senior football player and
wrestler for Sandburg High School.
What is it that most people don’t
understand about wrestling?
Most people don’t understand the team
bond you build through wrestling. Many
look at it as a individual sport but the team
bond you create is amazing. Some of the
guys on my team are some of my closest
friends outside the mat.
What is your proudest moment in
sports?
It was winning the eighth grade football
championship for the Orland Park Pioneers.
I say that, because it was my first championship
team I was ever a part of.
Do you have an embarrassing
moment in sports?
I dislocated my finger mid-match if that
counts.
Do you listen to any pump-up music
before matches?
Yes, my favorite is easily “Never Recover”
by Lil Baby.
Is there something people don’t know
about you?
Most people don’t know that I can wiggle
my tongue in very odd ways. I am the only
one out of my friends that knows how to do
it. Also, a lot of people think I am FaZe Tfue,
a famous gamer.
Is there a movie you could watch
this week in...
I can watch “Goodfellas” every single day
of my life. “Stepbrothers” is a close second.
Is there a TV show you could binge
“Drake and Josh”. It was my favorite
childhood show and it is the best show of all
time. No discussion.
Is there someone - living or dead -
you would like to have dinner with?
I would want to have dinner with Conor
McGregor. I love his persona and style on
how he approaches things in life. He went
from dead broke to a world class fighter
purely based off his belief in himself and
hard work and I admire that greatly.
If they made a movie of your life,
who should play you?
I would say Brad Pitt because we kinda
look alike.
What would the title of the movie
It would be called “The Good, The Bad
and The Ugly.”
Eagles swimmers hot, wrestlers
suffer heartbreaking SWSC loss
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Sandburg’s boys swimming and diving
team, which has won three straight sectionals,
is off to another big start in 2018-2019,
which included a recent 109-74 victory over
District 230 rival Stagg in Orland Park.
Pete Bukiri, a senior who qualified for
state in two events last season, won a pair
of events against the Chargers as he claimed
the 200 yard IM (2 minutes, 6.35 seconds)
and 100 free (:50.58).
Sean Harlin won the 100 fly (:56.69),
while Ethan Miranda-Gale claimed the 500
free (5:13.51).
The 200 free relay team of Mitch Cook-
Graver, Harlin, Miranda-Gale and Mike Rzeszowicz
won in 1:35.08 and the 400 free
relay foursome of Cook-Graver, Miranda-
Gale, Eddie Howaniec and Bukiri was first
with a 3:25.51.
Diver Cody Thill scored a winning 4.00.
The Eagles finished second in the 12-
team York Invitational on Dec. 15.
Individually, Jacob Simonek was second
in the 100 breast stroke with 1:04.04 and
fifth in the 100 IM with a 1:00.50.
Thill was second in diving 395.80 and
Miranda-Gale was fourth with a 2:07.75.
Jimmy Jenkot took third in the 100 breast
with a 1:04.25;
Bukuri took fourth in the 200 free 1:51.08
and fourth in the 500 free 5:00.20
The Eagles are at the Lincoln-Way Central
Invitational Thursday, Dec. 27.
Tough loss on the mat
Sandburg got behind 19-0 and made a
huge comeback but fell short in a 31-30 loss
to Lockport on Friday, Dec. 21, in a South-
West Suburban Blue battle in Orland Park.
Lockport was ranked in the top five in
the state in Class 3A by two services and
picked up three pins in the match to Sandburg’s
two. Another tipping point was that
Lockport won a pair of one-point decisions
and Sandburg, which lost its first dual of the
season in 11 tries, pulled off one.
Sandburg winners were Matthew Parker
(106 pounds), Patrick Nolan (138), Zach
Bateman (145), Mike Bosco (182), Kevin
Zimmer (195), Alex Hirschfield (220) and
Nate Goodman (285).
Sandburg’s Matthew Parker positions
Austin wins state Cyclocross title
Sandburg freshman Jordan Austin won
the 15-16 division of the Cyclocross Illinois
State Championship Dec. 2 at Montrose Harbor
in Chicago.
She won the 15-16 title last year at the age
of 14 when she choose to race up in age. She
races for the Weather Channel team .
Her team is made up of six athletes and is
coached by Juan Carlos Arteaga of Broadview.
Dolitzky game set for Friday
The Eagles Hockey Club will host two
games on Friday, Dec. 28 at the Arctic Ice
Arena in memory of former player David
Dolitsky, who died in 2016 after being struck
by a vehicle while he was mowing the lawn.
The Eagles’ junior varsity will take on an
alumni team at 7 p.m. and the varsity follows
with a game against the alumni at 7:45 p.m.
The Eagles have set up a scholarship fund
in Dolitsky’s name. Sam Lotito and Connor
Wiegel were the first two recipients.
FOOTBALL
Area coaches to make most of big changes
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Illinois High School Association
schools shockingly
voted to eliminate conferences
and implement a district
system in football, starting
with the 2021 season.
The proposal narrowly
passed with 324 schools
voting yes, 307 voting no
and 69 school turned in ballots
with no opinions. There
were 116 schools that did not
turn in ballots.
The nuts and bolts is that
there will be eight districts
in eight classes. The top four
teams in each district will go
to the 32-team postseason in
each class. There will still be
a nine-game regular-season
schedule and the first two
games will not count for or
against a postseason bid.
Coaches in the area are
trying to look at the bright
side of the massive changes.
Sandburg coach Scott Peters
will wait and see.
“It’s a lot to take in,” he
said. “Some coaches will
“We voted no for the
I am OK with the change if
that’s what the majority of
new rivalries made within
Andrew’s Adam Lewandowski
“My chief concern is for
the state of football,” Lewandowski
added. “In this
day and age, the game of
football has never been
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Home before the holidays
produces win over Andrew
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Home got a little sweeter
for Sandburg’s girls basketball
team.
After eight games on either
an opponent’s court or
a neutral floor, the Eagles
came home on Dec. 11 and
suffered their worst loss of
the year, 70-48.
The second showing in
Orland Park went much better
for the Eagles.
In what figured to be a
close battle between two
District 230 rivals, Sandburg
gave its home crowd plenty
to cheer about breaking out
to a 31-13 lead after three
quarters and hanging on for
a 41-29 victory on Thursday,
Dec. 20.
Since the Argo loss, the
Eagles won three straight
games heading into the Hillcrest
Holiday Tournament
“We were hitting our
shots and getting going
right away,” said Stephanie
Faro, who led the balanced
Eagles attack with 12 points
against Andrew. “Defensively,
we’ve been working
together.”
Faro had 11 points in the
16-minute stretch of the
second and third quarters,
including a buzzer-beating
halftime layup. Grace Badon
added 10 points including
a pair of 3-pointers in the
fourth quarter. Destiny Antoine
added eight points.
The Eagles’ next home
game will be Jan. 8 against
Lincoln-Way East.
Sandburg’s Destiny Antoine (No. 25) gets ready to fire a
pass to Molly Nolan while Andrew’s Aniah Long defends in
the Eagles’ win on Thursday, Dec. 20.
JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Holidays at Hillcrest
The Eagles opened play
in the Hillcrest tournament
with a doubleheader on Saturday,
Dec. 22.
In the first-round morning
session, Sandburg a dominated
Thornton Fractional
South. 52-18. Faro led the
way with 13 points.
In the afternoon championship
bracket, the Eagles
played Rich South even for
32 minutes in regulation but
dropped a 58-52 overtime
decision.
Faro led the Eagles with
18 points and scored a layup
with one second left in regulation
to help send the game
into OT.
Badon added 13 points in
the setback as the Eagles fell
to 9-5.
The tournament was set to
resume on Wednesday, Dec.
26 with the Eagles challenging
Thornton. If they win
that game, they play for fifth
place in the 16-team tournament
on Thursday, Dec. 27.
Here are your assignments
The Illinois High School
Association announced its
postseason assignments and
Sandburg will be in a 20-
team Class 4A sectional that
does not have a host yet.
Sandburg, Marist, Thornton
and Lincoln-Way West
will each host regionals.
Other teams in the sectional
are Eisenhower, Mother
McAuley, Bloom, Crete-
Monee, Homewood-Flossmoor,
Lincoln-Way East,
Thorton Fractional South,
Bremen, Lincoln-Way Central,
Oak Lawn, Richards,
Shepard, Stagg, Thornwood
and Andrew.
The winner heads to the
Illinois Wesleyan Supersectional.
The seeds are expected to
be released on Jan. 31. As of
now, the top team appears to
be Mother McAuley.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Eagles flew into Elmhurst as winners
TIM CRONIN, Freelance Reporter
When Sandburg scored a
60-50 victory over District
230 rival Andrew on Dec.
18, it brought the Eagles
back to .500 for the season.
They were 6-6 entering
the Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament
at York in Elmhurst,
which opened on Wednesday,
Dec. 26. They had a
modicum of confidence, and
a bit of momentum.
Some of the good vibes
came from a basic: Sandburg
hit 7-of-11 free throws after
back-to-back games making
only 2-of-9.
“Yeah, 64 percent is an
improvement for us,” coach
Todd Allen said with a
chuckle. “But we were up
17 points in the second half,
and I’ll give our kids credit.
They started fouling but we
made some free-throws.”
A flurry of three-pointers
closed the gap for Andrew,
but both Zach Kusper and
Atharva Atreya were 3-of-
4 from the line in the final
quarter.
Even better for Sandburg,
the Eagles shot 24-of-37
(64.8 percent) from the field,
shaking off the reputation of
being so-so shooters for a
second game in succession.
They were 19-of-41 (46.3
percent) in beating Crete-
Monee.
Just like old times
The game marked the resumption
of the Sandburg-
Andrew series after a year
off. The Thunderbolts are
in the SouthWest Suburban
Red, the Eagles in the Blue,
and the crossover game varies
from year to year. Sandburg’s
crossover foe this
year was Thornton, so Allen
and Andrew coach David
Wilson lined up a game.
“A good district rivalry
win,” Allen said. “It was
good to get them back on the
schedule. I talked to Dave
and said it’s great when we
play each other. I’m happy
to be able to do that.”
Stat of the week
Through the first 12
games, Sandburg twins Marvin
and Kevin Agwomoh
were tied in scoring with 135
points - 11.3 per game.
Conference heats up
Sandburg returns to
SouthWest Blue play on Jan.
8 at Bolingbrook, which was
6-2 entering holiday play.
The Raiders, while a perennial
threat, are thus beatable,
and that’s a common
theme in the league. Lockport
was 7-2, Homewood-
Flossmoor 5-2 entering the
holidays. That’s good but
not dominant. Or is it? Allen’s
not so sure.
“Bolingbrook’s losses
are to two good out-of-state
teams, and one of H-F’s is to
No. 1 Bloom,” Allen said.
The big surprise in the
league so far is Lincoln-Way
East, which was 5-6 after
a 55-54 overtime win in a
crossover game against Lincoln-Way
Central, and 1-1
in conference play. But the
league win was over Sandburg,
and that stuck in the
collective craw of the Eagles
through their last two games
prior to Christmas.
“That was still kind of
gnawing at us,” Allen said.
“One of our goals is finishing
in the Top 3 in the conference.”
Sandburg twins Kevin (left) and Marvin Agwomoh are putting up twin scoring numbers, as
both averaged 11.3 points per game in the Eagles’ first 12 games.
OP’s Minervini counted on as Brother Rice’s stat man
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
When Orland Park’s Mike
Minervini missed the Brother
Rice basketball victory over
Harlan Academy on Nov. 24
in the title game of the Joliet
West Thanksgiving Tournament,
it was a rare occasion.
It was only the fourth time
that Minervini, an Orland
Park resident, has missed a
Crusaders basketball game
since 1993. He did so with
good reason, though. That’s
because Minervini, who
has been the statistician for
Brother Rice baseball, basketball
and football for the
better part of the past two
decades, was doing stats for
the football team in the Illinois
High School Association
Class 8A state championship
game that evening at Memorial
Stadium in Champaign.
“I still got to cover the first
three games at Joliet West,
Minervini said. “Although
they moved the time of the
basketball title game up to
3:30, I still only went to the
football game.
“I wasn’t going to miss
that. I went with basketball
[quarterfinals] in 2005, baseball
[fourth place] in 2007
and now football [second
place in 2018]. It completed
the trifecta of state events for
me.”
The other basketball
games he has missed were
in 2002, when his daughter
Nicole got married. The
next year, Minervini, who
also does stats for St. Xavier
University basketball,
was committed to be at the
SXU contest when a Crusaders
game in Indiana got
rescheduled for a Saturday.
Then, in December of 2011
his oldest son, Michael was
returning from the inaugural
seven-month deployment
of the aircraft carrier, the
USS Bush. He and his wife,
Division I Brother Rice recruit Marquise Kennedy is one of
several stars Orland Park’s Mike Minervini has kept stats
on. TIM O’BRIEN/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Former Brother Rice pitcher Ryan Palmblad, an Orland
Park native, is one of many Crusader baseball players
statistician Mike Minervini has covered.
TIM O’BRIEN/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Sandra, got to join the other
families of the crew when
the ship returned to Norfolk,
Virginia.
He rarely misses Brother
Rice games. He has covered
games inside and outside. He
has kept the numbers in the
wind, rain, snow, sleet and
heat. His travels have taken
him to numerous cities in and
outside the Chicago area.
Minervini has been doing
the basketball statistics since
1993, the football numbers
since 1999, and the baseball
stats since 2000. He’s only
missed one football game,
and that was the second game
of the 1999 season when his
niece Allyson Polickey got
married. He has not missed a
baseball game since 2003.
So, how did Minervini, a
1966 Richards graduate, who
attended Eisenhower for his
first three years until Richards
opened, get involved in
Brother Rice athletics?
“My daughter [Nicole,
1993 grad] went to McAuley
and was a cheerleader there,
and my sons [Michael, 1995
grad and Ross, 1998 grad]
went to Brother Rice and
were involved in a variety
of sports,” Minervini said. “I
had followed Rice athletics
for awhile. I had relatives that
went there, and I attended the
1981 and 1985 football state
title games. So, they asked
me to help out, first with Pat
Richardson in basketball in
Mike Minervini, of Orland Park, (with clipboard) has been a fixture for Brother Rice sports
for 25 years. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Orland Park’s Jack McMahon (No. 44) and his Brother Rice teammates made it to the
Class 8A championship game in November, which was a highlight for statistician Michael
1993.”
He does not do stats for
McAuley events, because he
simply does not have much
time to do so. He also has
done the basketball stats for
the St. Xavier men’s and
women’s teams for the past
19 years. There are very
few conflicts with Crusader
events, but when there are, he
goes with Brother Rice.
There are many favorite
moments he can recall, starting
with basketball in 2005.
“We beat Simeon (77-
76) in double overtime at
St. Xavier in the [Class 4A]
sectional final that year,” Minervini
said. “Derrick Rose
was a sophomore, and that
was his last postseason loss,
as Simeon won it the next
two years. Then we beat Proviso
East (59-58) at the UIC
Supersectional to go downstate
for the first time.
“In baseball, we went
undefeated in the Catholic
League in 2017, and this season
was a huge highlight to
have a 13-game win streak
and advance to the state title
game in football.”
Living five minutes from
Brother Rice for many years,
Minervini moved his family
to Orland Park in 1997, and
they have been there since.
He retired from the CTA in
1999, and that also helped
free him to do more statistical
work. He has been married to
Sandra for 47 years and obviously
loves what he does
with Brother Rice, but turned
71 on Nov. 2. So, some of his
impressive streaks may soon
be ending to tend to family.
“I’ve got nine grandkids
that are involved in sports,”
Minervini said. “So, it’s getting
close. But it’s not because
I’m tired of it.”

THURSDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK
Some great stories that just missed next week’s list
1ST AND 3
THE ILLINOIS HIGH
SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
ANNOUNCED THE
AVERAGE ENROLLMENT
FIGURES IT WILL USE
FOR THE NEXT TWO
YEARS
1. Around here
Sandburg is listed
at 2,934 students,
which is 23rd in the
state. Also in District
230, Andrew is listed
at 2,139 and Stagg
is at 2,271.5.
2. Now that’s a lot
The IHSA lists Morton
as No. 1 with an
enrollment of 8,196.
So, take all the
Sandburg students,
multiply by two and
you still cant match
Morton.
3. That’s not much
Pike County Christian
Academy in
Pittsfield’s enrollment
is listed as
four. Four! Heck, that
poor school can’t
even field a full bowling
team.
Jeff Vorva
j.vorva@22ndcm.com
End of the year lists.
I have known
newspaper people
who hate compiling them.
Hate it.
I think if they were given
a choice of starting a yearend
list or losing an eyeball,
they might have to ponder it
for a few seconds. I wonder
if Popeye the Sailor refused
to do a list?
You will be happy to
know that I am not one of
those. I am happy to do
them. Yes, it is extra work
that can be a pain in the
neck, but once I start doing
them, it’s like a nice trip
down memory lane.
I usually find stuff that
I completely forgot about,
even though it just happened
mere months ago.
On Thursday, Jan. 3, we
will present our Top 10
sports stories for 2018. In
the past, we’ve looked back
at the sports year in a different
format, but I like the
Top 10 format.
There is no shortage of
Top 10 stories in this sportrich
area. The problem is,
what in the heck do I do
about the quality stories that
don’t make next week’s list?
Then, I heard bells jingling
in the background as if
this were one of those sappy
Hallmark holiday movies
and — voila — it came to
me. Let’s talk about them
this week!
So, without further ado,
let’s talk about five stories
from The Orland Park Prairie
that fell a little short of
next week’s power-packed
list.
In no particular order:
Fitz blitz
In November, Orland
Park native Pat Fitzgerald
was unanimously named
Big Ten Conference Coach
of the Year by the media and
the coaches as the Northwestern
coach helped guide
his team to a Big Ten West
title.
Although his team lost to
Ohio State in the league’s
championship game, he
continued to make some
news. He is being rumored
as a candidate for the Green
Bay Packers head coaching
job. He has been rumored
for other college jobs in the
past, but he steadfastly said
he wasn’t interested and
wanted to stay on in Evanston.
But the Packers job?
That might be a little hard to
turn down an interview.
Top-ping a record
On May 18, Orland
Park’s Teresa Topolski and
three other runners (Sarah
Kerfin, Charlotte Venezio
and Samantha Spencer)
from Providence Catholic
did not win the Illinois
High School Association
state championship in the
800-meter relay at Eastern
Illinois University in
Charleston, but her team
ran a time of 1 minute
and 45.15 seconds in the
preliminary race to break a
40-year-old school record.
Topolski was just a freshman.
“I still replay it in my
mind how Teresa took over
the race,” Celtics sprint/relay
coach Mark Coglianese
Jr. said. “She ran out of
her mind the last couple of
weeks of the season.”
Mather sets up title
Katie Mather, a senior
Marist High School setter,
an Orland Park native who
attended Cardinal Joseph
Bernardin and Century
Jr. High School before
her family moved to Oak
Lawn, helped her team
become the first Class 4A
volleyball team win backto-back
titles since 2012
and 2013.
The RedHawks beat
Downers Grove North
Nov. 10 at Redbird Arena
on the campus of Illinois
State University in Normal.
Mather had 21 assists and
four aces in that match.
Marist downed Benet 25-18,
25-15 in the semifinals and
Mather collected 20 assists.
Sandburg’s fourth-place finish the state in cheerleading
was one of five outstanding stories that did not make
the Top 10 sports stories of 2018, which will appear on
Thursday, Jan. 3. 22ND CENTURY MEDIA FILE PHOTO
She finished with 980 assists
to go with a team-high
44 aces this season for the
38-3 RedHawks in 2018.
4-for-4
In October, Anna Loureiro
became the first female
tennis player from Sandburg
since 2008 to qualify for
state all four years.
The first three years, she
qualified as a singles player.
This year, she teamed
up with Jayme Gross and
the pair finished the season
28-1 and the two players
earned all-state honors after
the state declared they finished
5th-12th. They were
in a bracket in which they
would have played for fifth
place, but weather wiped
out consolation rounds.
Another top finish for Eagles
cheerleaders
In early February, Sandburg’s
cheerleaders finished
fourth in the state the Large
Team division behind Joliet
West, Marist and Stevenson.
Sandburg had beaten Marist
by nearly three points the
week before in sectional
competition.
Maddie Bateman, Anna
Benz-Weeden, Holly
Chudzik, Kelly Hyde, Grace
Mackle, Karly Petro, Makiah
Terry and Amy Weslow
were seniors on the squad.
