Why your Buying Power Erodes
in the Toronto Market
Don’t Put Your
Homebuying
Dreams on Hold
The Best Time to Buy May be Now
BY JOANNA LANG & JENNIFER GREENBERG
Toronto homebuyers often believe that the best
approach to entering the market is to take the
extra time to save for a larger down payment in
order to reduce their monthly mortgage payment.
Unfortunately, given the dynamics of the Toronto real estate
market, this thoughtful approach can often cost them their
dream home.
Let’s consider an example
where a buyer is pre-qualified
to purchase a house or
condo in the $750,000 price
range. They have currently
saved $50,000, enough
for the minimum down
payment, but hope to save an
additional $12,000 over the
next year so they can reduce
their mortgage payments.
…GREAT IDEA RIGHT?
The challenge: One year
later, the same $750,000
house or condo they were
looking at now costs $810,000
(based on the 10-year average
annual price growth of
Toronto Real Estate Board –
all TREB region properties).
Despite their additional
$12,000 in savings, not
only would their mortgage
payments and closing costs
be much higher, they may
no longer even qualify to buy
their target home.
JOANNA LANG has deep roots in Toronto and is a mortgage agent,
1
STEADY
2
CHANGING
3
RISING
INCREASE IN HOME PRICES Toronto
house prices have steadily climbed. On a
compound annual growth rate basis, Toronto
properties (all TREB regions) have grown 8.6%
per year over the past five years, 7.6% per year
over the past 10 years, and +6.7%* per year over
the past 20 years. There are market blips you
read about in the media, reflective of short-term
volatility that occur in any market. But, if you
step back and look at the longer-term picture,
the growth in Toronto real estate prices has been
very consistent.
To put that in perspective, a home priced
at $750,000 could have increased to almost
$800,000 just one year later.
LENDING GUIDELINES Canadian
lending guidelines have changed significantly
since 2010. While the long-term goal of these
changes is to strengthen the real estate market,
unfortunately each change can have a dramatic
and immediate impact on your affordability. One
such change is the Benchmark Qualifying Rate
which was implemented on April 19, 2010 and
further restricted on October 17, 2016. This simple
change had a dramatic impact requiring that
a buyer must qualify at a higher interest rate
than their actual mortgage rate. For example,
$750,000 in buying power on Oct 16, 2016 would
have dropped to $630,000 literally overnight.
INTEREST RATES After a seven-year
period of flat interest rates, the Bank of Canada
started increasing its overnight lending rates in
mid-2017, which directly impacts Lenders’ Prime
Rates and Mortgage Rates. In fact, the Bank
of Canada has already increased its overnight
lending rate by 1.25% since July 2017, and many
economists anticipate another 0.50% to 1.00%
of increases by the end of 2019. Simply put, if you
are pre-qualified for $750,000 today and rates go
up by 0.25% tomorrow, your buying power would
drop to approximately $735,000. If rates were to
increase by 0.75% over a longer term, your buying
power would drop to approximately $705,000.
Buyer Power Today vs. Waiting
Overall, while it may seem like a good strategy to
sit on the sidelines and wait for the perfect time to
buy, given the dynamics of the Toronto market, this
strategy has often cost people their dream home.
“Starting any project requires
a solid foundation. Learn about
the maximum potential your
property has to offer”
You may have vowed to quit smoking, travel to new places, exercise more, or perhaps,
spend more time with your family. But what about your home, the place where you
spend most of the year? In the spirit of new beginnings, I thought I’d share, with
you, 5 New Year’s Resolutions for your Home. They say that home is where the heart is,
but a lovelier, well organised, and more comfortable place to live will surely work wonders
throughout the year.
I hope these new year’s tips set you on a positive path to accomplishing a safe, organised,
comfortable home.
1 2 3
DECLUTTER AND
ORGANISE YOUR ‘STUFF’
One of the most effective
and least expensive ways to
feel better about your home
is to clear it of all the clutter
you’ve accumulated.
Every year, most of us
acquire a ton of stuff, and
without regular purging,
cabinets and drawers get
jam-packed, making it
difficult to find the things
you use, and you might
agree - clutter can make
your house look dirty and
outdated.
This year, make the
conscious decision to go
room-by-room and remove
anything that you don’t use,
wear, or love, and donate it
to charity. After that, think
twice about what you bring
into your home.
SPEND TIME ON
HOME IMPROVEMENT
PROJECTS TOGETHER
This year, try your hand
at some cool home
improvement projects with
your family. These projects
will not only improve your
living space, but you will
also get to spend lots of
quality family time. You
can try some DIY projects.
They’re a fun, creative way
to spend time together
and completed, you’ll
have something to enjoy
together.
Build a garden, plant a tree,
but most importantly,
do it together.
MAKE IT
SAFE AND SOUND
Your home may look
wonderful and well
organised. Make sure to
devote your efforts into
making it safe, too. Ensure
that you’re not living with
a potential fire danger,
health risk, or security
issue. Besides installing fire
detectors, check your house
for gases, such as radon
and carbon monoxide.
The equipment needed to
perform these tests are
not particularly expensive.
Remember to also keep
your dryer’s lint trap clean.
With home security being
such a hot subject around
Midtown, install door and
window alarms; they’re
inexpensive.
WHAT THE TECH!?!?
Just Sold!
Don’t
Get
Scammed
in 2019
BY JON COHEN
TECH COLUMNIST
Just Sold!
Just Sold!
After spending hours working
and saving money, nothing sucks
more than getting robbed by
someone going into your bank account
and taking all your money. In this
month’s What the Tech!?!?, I will open
your eyes to some common ways that
bad guys try to rob you of your money.
RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification)
theft is the first way. RFID is what
allows you to use Tap to Pay. While
Tap to Pay is great and very secure, the
RFID data can be read not just by card
terminals, but also by third-party RFID
readers. These readers look like an old
cell phone, and if the bad guy is close
by, they can use this wirelessly to grab
your credit or debit card number and
additional info, even if your wallet is
in your pocket or purse. A good way to
protect yourself is to use an RFID shield,
which can be in a simple style, like in
the form of a paper cardholder, or as
fancy as wallets with RFID blocking
built into them.
From the high-tech of RFID, we
move to low tech. That’s right, I mean
someone who just goes ahead and
writes down your credit card number.
This happens a lot when
JON COHEN is the owner of All About Tech and a certified Apple Mac & iOS Technician; just your local, friendly tech superhero!
allabouttech.ca
12 VILLAGE LIVING MIDTOWN
you’re at a restaurant, and your waiter
may take your card to swipe it. In this
scenario, the waiter could take down
the card number and attempt to use it
to make a later purchase. The best way
to combat this type of fraud is to be
within sight of your card at all times.
If the waiter offers to swipe it for you,
just say, ‘Great, let me come with you.’
If they push back, ask for a manager.
Lastly is skimming, when bad guys do
a modification to the credit card terminal
or ATM/bank machine. The modification
adds a reader inside the slot which you’d
normally stick your card into, and which
will record your account info, as well as
your PIN. This is, by far, one of the most
common threats out there.
Sadly, skimming is sometimes hard
to catch. The machines are made to
look just like a normal terminal that
you would use to pay for common
things such as gas, meals, and cab
rides. I would encourage you to try the
following means to protect yourself
from skimming scams: Let’s assume
that your bank card pin is 1234. Your
cab ride just ended, and you are about
to pay. Rather than using the real pin
(1234), use a fake pin (like 0000). Now
- this is the important part - if that
fake pin (0000) works and your card
gets approved, then you know that
this terminal has been compromised.
At that point, take a receipt, maybe
also, write down the cab’s license
plate number, and then, call the nonemergency
police number to let them
know. Don’t forget to also call your
bank to tell them that your card was
compromised.
It sucks that bad things happen, but
it is better to be aware of what to look
for, and to try to protect yourself rather
than falling victim.
many bathrooms, and I know the
bathtub can make or break a bathroom
design, so I encourage clients to give it
the consideration it deserves - not to
mention a little extra budget, if possible.
When shopping for a new bathtub,
style and comfort are equally
important. In other words, great
bathrooms can’t compromise on either.
Some sleek, sculptural soaker tubs
border on art, and come in a seemingly
endless array of shapes, sizes, finishes
and materials.
Once you identify a look that you
love, be sure to sit back (literally!) and
give some thought to the tub’s shape
and size, and how these suit your
shape and size. Sit inside it, and get a
good feel for the tub’s curves, height
and interior angles. For this reason, I
recommend buying a new bathtub in
person, versus online.
Designer Find: Victoria + Albert’s
new Pembroke Collection includes a
freestanding bathtub (pictured above)
featuring crisp lines, graceful curves,
and a silhouette that tapers toward the
base to occupy less floor space than its
straight-sided counterparts. But don’t
be fooled, this tub is deep and dualended,
allowing for ample space and
soothing soaks for one - or two! The
Pembroke is available in your choice
of exterior trending finishes, including
Gloss Black, Matt Black, Matt White,
Stone Grey, Light Grey, Anthracite, and
QUARRYCAST ® White.
Like the bathtub, your vanity should
be a showpiece. This is particularly
true of small bathrooms and powder
rooms, where there is little room to
make a big splash. Look for vanities
boasting distinctive features, be it a
unique washbasin, a splashy faucet, or
a striking base, to give your bathroom
a fashionable, functional edge.
Trending now are open shelved
units, such
as Victoria
+ Albert’s
latest Metallo
quartz
washstand
distinguished
by its
unusual
metal legs,
featuring right-angle tee joints inspired
by retro bathroom plumbing. The
Metallo 61 Quartz design, the most
compact model offered, measures
just 24" w, making it ideal for smaller
bathrooms and powder rooms.
Of course, function also plays an
important role when selecting the right
bathroom vanity. Is this an en suite for
two, a private bathroom, or a powder
room? Will you be using this area for
grooming or to apply make-up? Other
things to take into account: door swing,
traffic flow, plumbing, and location of
other fixtures, such as the toilet and
tub. These will affect the vanity styles
and specs best-suited to you.
When browsing bathtubs and
vanities, shop with both in mind.
Remember that the most impactful
statements are made by unified styles.
You don’t necessarily have to select
matching fixtures, or even pieces
from the same brand. The key is to
ensure your selections have a common
aesthetic, be it traditional, modern,
colour, or otherwise. The result will be
a harmonious bathroom, where all the
main elements sing the same tune.
EATING
Toronto’s First Fresh
Olive Oil & Vinegar
Tasting Bar
Love,
Peace,
and a
Full Belly
This Year in
Jerusalem
BY JOEL SOLISH @FOODIE411
The great thing about being in
Israel is EVERYTHING. Faces,
places and tastes that you can’t
imagine. You have to see it with your
own eyes, hear it with your own
ears, touch it with your own hands,
and taste with your own tongue.
You fall in love over and over and
over again.
Landing at Ben Gurion Airport
is emotional for many. After seven
years away from my second home,
it was a long-overdue refresh on the
culinary scene, and a catch-up with
my people, while making new friends
along the way. The best way to explain
Israel to those who have never been is
‘balagan,’ meaning ‘chaos.’ Living in
Israel is a struggle, but Israelis live life to
the fullest, every day. It was recharging
and invigorating for me to make this
culinary, cultural pilgrimage.
The experience is different each
time, and during this 5 th visit, I delved
deeper into being in this special place.
Connecting with Sabras (people who are
born Israeli), and hearing their stories
fascinates me, almost viscerally. In
terms of food, as I am sure you know
is my modus operandi, Jerusalem is one
of the most special places on earth.
The intersection of two thousand
years of cross-cultural experiments
and interactions is what makes this
city, and this country’s cuisine unique.
People from many, many countries
and ethnicities, all fusing together.
Yet, defining this food culture is near
impossible. Even to its most senior
chefs and culinary icons, it is still being
defined and explored.
The ingredients are local, and
fusion is their technique. Of interest
during a conversation with Chef Tali
Friedman (who runs a cooking school
and tours of the Machane Yehuda
Market) was learning about using the
intensity of long cooking as a fresh
flavour, expressed through a chraime
vinaigrette, as an example. Chraime is
a Sephardic fish stew, with a smoked
paprika and cumin tomato base, infused
with lots of other spices - imagine those
flavours in a dressing!
This country flexes its strong flavor
memory in a diverse restaurant scene
with a tremendous focus on fresh
ingredients. As a result, the chefs work
with phenomenal products. It gets hot
here, so less cooking is often more,
but there is also a lot of slow cooking
and braising, due to limitations of the
religious community. But, understand
that this country is also very secular,
and often divided, demonstrated while I
was in Jerusalem, by an upset election,
JOEL SOLISH In his daily life, Joel connects farmers to mouths, selling the most #sustainable and delicious #meat to the best #restaurants
in Toronto. Follow Joel Solish @foodie411
when the progressive incumbent was
unsuccessful in his campaign. There
were smiles from the Jerusalemites
whom I met that day, but you felt their
utter, deflated disappointment.
The focus of this trip was to
experience Open Restaurants Jerusalem,
celebrating the culinary scene through
dining, hands-on experiences, and
unique events that combine food and
culture. At one event, I caught up with
Israeli food scene icon, Assaf Granit
(pictured right), who recently branched
out with restaurants in London and
Paris, as part of his Machneyuda Group.
Chef Granit shared a lot of great insight,
and also, offered validation to the
conversations I had during my time in
Jerusalem. “In our kitchens, the soup
that’s boiling is the melting pot of Israel,
and we are cooking the dishes you
would eat in a grandmother’s kitchen,”
says Assaf. He explained further: “We
focus on cooking [in] our habitat, with
ancient recipes, to create modern dishes,
our takes on classics.” We talked about
a non-traditional kubbeh soup, with
mussels. Not a classic preparation
of this Iraqi dish, but it makes sense
in Jerusalem, when you understand
the undercurrent of diverse culinary
influence.
My 2008 visit to Assaf’s first
restaurant, Machneyuda, resulted in
my best meal that year. I still talk about
it to this day; when I close my eyes,
I can still taste it. In Jerusalem, and
throughout Israel, there is more to the
food experience than taste; you are
impacted by the smells and sounds, too.
Hospitality is as focused as if you were
in someone’s home, and as Assaf put
it, “I want to attack my customer in a
good way. I want to know what he wants
before he thinks about it. The customer
is to fall in love with the hospitality.”
The kind of restaurant I want to eat at,
at all times.
You want to hear about some of the
food before I sign off, right? How silly
of me. On this trip I ate Middle Eastern,
Georgian, Turkish, Italian, Spanish,
Kurdish...Two standout experiences:
eating at Jersualem’s Primitivo, and Tel
Aviv’s Ha’achim. A visit to Primitivo is
best-spent sitting at the bar in front of
Chef Diane Eitan, perusing the extensive
Israeli wine list (Israel is also the Wild
West of wine; some good juice is being
made, from the Judean Hills to The
Galilee), searching for that hidden gem
that you will fall in love with, as well as
with Chef and her ingredient-focused,
Italian-influenced cuisine. Ha’achim,
on the other hand, is a true expression
of Tel Aviv’s food scene - a comfortably
loud space, with lots of action, beautiful
people, and even more beautiful food,
indeed some of the most memorable
on the trip. I will long-pine for the coalcooked
kohlrabi with local goat cheese,
fresh thyme, chili and poppy seed –
phenomenal!
Do yourself, and me, a favour -
visit Israel. I promise, you will come
back with a full belly and heart.
BY DIANA AZIZ
*New Members Only
I
have to admit, I was a bit skeptical.
EMS (Electric Muscle Stimulation)
that delivers a full body workout
in twenty minutes; one that is
equivalent to a 90-minute workout,
burning 1,000 calories for up to 48
hours after your work out. Seemed too
good to be true, so I had to try it for
myself. I met with Clara, Mani and Ali
at GoGo Muscle Training, located at
70 Yorkville Ave. Guess what? They do
just that and more.
The flagship store looks like a highend
spa. The reception area is chic and
immaculate, the locker rooms equipped
with showers and all the amenities you
would need for a luxurious experience.
The workout area is minimal and
aesthetically pleasing; the EMS suits
hang very much like wetsuits in a surf
shop. The equipment is minimal as you
are working against your own body,
the resistance created by the circuits
themselves. This is a one-stop shop.
GoGo Muscle Training provides clients
with sanitary workout wear and the
EMS suit itself, making it so easy to
pop in at a moment’s notice to get your
high-end workout in. You can be in
and out in less than an hour, inclusive
of pre- and post- workout
regimes, making it perfect for busy
professionals or anyone who wants
maximum results without maximum
time spent.
Ali Mirkhan was recovering from a
soccer injury. His physiotherapist was
using EMS to help in his rehabilitation.
After a couple of sessions, his
therapist commented on how well
Ali was progressing, having done the
supplemental exercises at home. Ali
wasn’t doing his exercises at home;
this is when he realised that the EMS
must be triggering muscle conditioning
hours and even days after treatment.
Ali stumbled upon something that could
change fitness altogether. EMS has been
used in Europe to train elite athletes. Ali
wants to bring it to the broader masses.
Ali partnered with Mani Khajehnouri, a
software designer/architect who has a
passion for fitness. Mani is responsible
for all the cutting edge software of the
equipment, wireless technology being
one. In his basement, he and Ali spent
months perfecting their EMS program.
Once they felt it was ready, they opened
a pop-up shop in the downtown core to
showcase to the public. People came in
to try their programs and were amazed
by the quality of the results and at the
speed that they were seeing results.
From there, GoGo Muscle Training
was born.
Clara and staff are certified EMS
fitness experts, facilitating the entire
workout, so there is no need to worry
about incorrect form or equipment
use. The routine and intensity of
the program is tailor-made for each
individual, and designed for all ages
and fitness levels. Constant instruction
and support drastically reduces injury
and greatly increases high-level
productivity.
Firsthand, I can tell you that I am very
impressed. As promised, I am feeling
results even two days post-workout.
The professionalism, high-level facility
and fantastic, personalised workout will
have me coming back for more.
The Modern Moms’
Guide to Calming
Stress – Part 1
Slowing Down a Fast-Paced World
BY SINDY SHIN, ND CREATOR OF THE CALM MAMA METHOD
recently supported a group of
mothers through a challenge
to release stress in their lives.
I shared simple lifestyle and
mindset strategies that work to
gain calm control over how we
feel, so you can feel more like
you again. There’s no better time
like the present to set the tone for
this brand new year ahead. So,
I’m inspired to share with you a
collection of tips and tools in this
three-part series, dedicated to
helping busy, modern moms calm
stress in their lives.
There’s a desire to unplug and
unwind, especially in the city. A
simple study done a little while
back compared two groups of
drivers. One group was asked
to rush from point A to point B
in busy traffic. The other group
was asked to take their time.
The rushed drivers arrived at
the destination a couple minutes
faster (on average) than the
other group. When asked about
stress, the rushed group reported
significantly higher levels of stress.
My takeaway: Is arriving at the
destination a bit faster worth the
stress?
One of the most common
reasons why people feel stressed
is because they feel rushed. Not
enough time in the day to get
everything done. I’ve created a
process called the Pick Your Pace
strategy that gives you the space
to move through your day at a pace
that suits how you want to feel.
I hope you find these tips to be a
helpful way to savour the moments
in all the beauty and chaos of it all.
I’ll be seeing you soon for Part 2.
With gratitude.
Here are 3 Pick Your Pace
tips to help release the
stress of feeling rushed:
SINDY SHIN, ND As a Calm Mama Expert, Sindy helps busy moms breakthrough stress, anxiety and overwhelm, so they can have the
calm presence they need to be confident for whatever comes their way. But, at the heart of it all, she teaches modern moms how to embrace
self-care and reconnect with themselves, so they can thrive with power and grace. To meet Dr. Sindy, visit www.qwellness.ca or learn more
at www.sindyshin.com
1
SLOW
2
STICKY
3
PERMISSION
DOWN A SMIDGE. Slow down how
you move through your day normally,
just slightly. This creates space to be
more present in whatever you’re doing
without having to completely change
how you’re used to functioning, for
now. This could be slowing down in
conversation to engage more and
prevent miscommunication, which can
be stressful. It could be slowing your pace
between each thing you’re doing so you
give yourself space to think - did I grab
my lunch? pack my keys? I enjoyed that
meal. I really love that song...
NOTE IT. There are certain
times in the day that are more prone to
feeling rushed than others. For example,
MORNINGS. Getting to work on time,
getting kids to school on time, making
it to that morning gym class...etc. If
there are things that you know you need
to take with you (keys, food, phone,
important docs, etc.), write a reminder on
a sticky note and put it on your door, the
night before, where it’s impossible for you
to miss it. This relieves running thoughts
of things that you can’t forget, as you’re
trying to relax for bed, because you know
you’ve taken care of it.
TO PAUSE. This is a big one.
If you only use one tip today, try to make
it this one. You need moments of rest
during the day. Too often, we give power
to reasons why we have to keep pushing
on. It’s driving the burnout epidemic!
You’ll notice a change in the way you feel
quickly, if you give yourself time to rest,
recharge and reset every single day. Just
like you recharge your phone that you
love so dearly, recharge yourself, too. It
might look like a mini meditation, a few
deep breaths, a power nap, some fresh
air or a 10-minute walk. As long as it’s
something that recharges you and lifts
your spirits, it’s all good.
PARENTING
Diary of a New Mama
BALANCING ACT
BY JAIME SLAVIN
AN OVERJOYED, BUT EXHAUSTED, NEW MAMA
Here I am, 8 p.m. on a Saturday night, writing about
balancing work, life, and a baby.
That is the name of the game at the moment, and I am
ok with that. A very wise woman who is both a mom and
business owner, reminded me to stop trying to chase
balance. I was talking to her (more like venting to her)
about the fact that, since going back to work (I went back to
work three days a week when my son was six months old),
I feel like I can’t keep up with life.
Every day feels like I am trying to figure out how to
balance home life and work life. Then, by the end of the
day, with the list running through my head of the things
I did not accomplish, I feel defeated. So, while venting
to this experienced mom whose kid is no longer a baby
anymore, and whose 20-year business is very successful,
I learned something. The ‘very wise woman’ taught me to
drop the need to feel balanced, and let the ebb and flow of
daily life do its thing. Chasing this balance would be more
exhausting than actual reality. Balance is elusive.
I am now embracing this mentality. It feels good. Sure,
I find myself thinking about my work when I am with my
son, and thinking about my son when I am working. I am
still very new to this routine. However, being gentler with
my expectations of balance is a much healthier and wiser
approach. I know that experience will bring newfound
wisdom to how I handle, rather than balance, motherhood
and working. I only hope that I can do so with grace,
compassion, and focus for both my son and my work.
Knowing that there will be days (likely, very
many days) when things are going to be
messy, and when my mind
feels scattered
and I feel
pulled in both
directions, I
can find relief
in knowing
that is how we
transform into
wise women
ourselves.
kindness and conviviality. “In a world
now where we need to spread so much
love and so much kindness, it was very
important for that message to be the
headliner,” says Lisa Sonshine.
This pop-rock duo has
been rocking out the tunes
since 2004 and has grown
into one of Toronto’s bestloved
kids’ performers.
“It’s been an incredible
ride!” she says.
Lisa Sonshine, who thought she
was headed to Broadway, and Brock
‘Broccoli’ Burford, who “thought he was
going to be a big rock star,” have been
best friends since studying Musical
Theatre at Sheridan College. But,
another calling beckoned the lyrical
pair. After graduating, an opportunity
came up to teach music to moms and
tots. They were an instant hit. Children
and parents adored their sound and
insisted they get it out there. So, Lisa
and Brock released their first CD,
Sonshine and Broccoli Jam. “It’s such a
beautiful fit, because the roles we play
as Sonshine and Broccoli give the kids
something to admire and look up to. We
get fan mail and parents telling us that
all the time,” says Sonshine.
Just recently, Lisa received an email
from an adoring mom whose nineyear-old
daughter has been a fan since
she was two. Her daughter had been
having trouble lately, making friends
at school, and she wanted to give her
a little support, so she took her to see
a child psychologist. After meeting her
daughter, the psychologist remarked
that she exuded a lot of confidence
and wanted to know where she got it
from. Her daughter simply replied,
“Lisa Sonshine.”
“I have to say that was one of the
biggest highlights of my career; it made
me cry. Sometimes you don’t realise
the impact you leave on kids,” says
Sonshine. “We travel all over Ontario
and when the kids sing along, it’s the
coolest. But when you know you’ve
touched them in a way when life is
challenging, it’s the best feeling.”
Over the past 15 years, Sonshine and
Broccoli has developed a sound that
stays current and relevant today: “Our
sound has changed drastically over
the years. As our fans have grown, so
have we and so has our music,” says
Sonshine. “For our latest album, we
co-wrote some of our songs with our
producer, which was a very different
experience, and it opened up a whole
different realm of music and relevant
sounds. We’ve just submitted to the
Junos for Best Kids Album, and we’re
hoping and praying for that.”
Amazing vibes and feelings of pure
joy have always been at the forefront
of Sonshine and Broccoli’s sound. In
January, they’ll be taking their energetic
and interactive show on the road to
China where they’ll open up for Asian
sensation, Ladybug. But don’t worry,
they’ll be back at the ROM in Toronto
for March break.
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
HUDSON
MABIN
BATHURST ST
Critical thinking skills are
defined as the ability to think
rationally and independently,
to understand the connection
between ideas and to see ideas from
different perspectives. The ability to
think critically is an important skill
in the global knowledge economy that
increasingly demands participants
to analyse information and integrate
different sources of knowledge in
problem-solving.
According to L. Elder and R. Paul,
authors of Critical Thinking Development:
A Stage Theory, critical thinking skills
enable students to make connections
across disciplines and understand
content on a “deeper, more lasting
level.” Students who can think critically
do better academically and in careers.
Critical thinkers consider, evaluate and
incorporate other’s ideas into innovative
solutions and therefore make exceptional
leaders.
Hudson College recognises the
importance of critical thinking skills,
and therefore, teachers focus their
curriculum on developing these skills
in their students. Units of study in
language, media, science and social
studies often begin with provocative
questions that ignite an interest in
the topic to be studied. Curriculum
topics are embedded in social justice
issues, historical contexts, and political
and economic theories. For example,
prior to reading the novel Bud, Not
Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis,
Grade 4 students learn about the Great
Depression of the 1930s in the United
States. Hunger, joblessness and events
which occurred in the 1930s, that were
related to issues of civil rights, are
discussed. As the students progress
through their novel study, teachers
explicitly model, guide and encourage
the connection of ideas in the novel
which relate to their class discussions.
Hudson Grade 6 students review
and discuss social attitudes and fears
towards an increasingly technological
society in the 1950s and ‘60s. Such class
discussions help students understand
Ray Bradbury’s stories, ‘Marionettes,
Inc.’ (1949) and ‘The Veldt’ (1950), on a
deeper level. As students read, they will
discuss and respond to the question,
‘Is there an increasing loss of human
relationships as we become
increasingly more dependent
on technology?’
Hudson teachers believe
the ability to think critically
underlines social change for
the better. Our Grade 8 students
engage in critical thinking skills
when they
deconstruct popular
advertisements to
reveal subtle and
hidden messages
that sustain systemic
discriminatory
practices in society.
Using this
information,
the students
create
media pieces that promote acceptance
of diversity.
Critical thinking skills are practised
daily as students and their teachers,
discuss, evaluate, and consider ideas
from a variety of primary and secondary
sources. Students are encouraged
to make connections and to share
innovative ideas that come from those
discussions. They are also encouraged
to critically reflect upon their own
understandings and ideas. Such
reflective processes develop critical
thinking further as students learn to see
their own ideas as perspectives which
can also be subjected to critical review.
It is for all of these reasons that
critical thinking is interwoven into
all areas of Hudson’s programming.
HOOKED ON BOOKS
Celebrate the Magic of Mary Poppins
BY JOANNE SALLAY
EDUCATION COLUMNIST
December’s holiday movie offerings
included the star-studded
Mary Poppins Returns. In addition
to the film, the Young People’s Theatre
in Toronto currently has a production
of the classic Mary Poppins running until
January 6 th . So, you can see that there is
much reason to reminisce and celebrate
Mary Poppins this month!
This Hooked on Books column is
dedicated to fresh adaptations of the
original 1934 novel by P.L. Travers. I am
confident that they will delight fans and
introduce a new generation of readers
to the most famous nanny of all time.
Pick up one of these three unique
book spins on the Mary Poppins we all
know and love, and then plan a trip to
the movies or theatre as part of a plan
to enhance the experience of reading
the books together at home! I am a
huge believer in making reading fun
and interactive in this way, and there is
much to discuss and compare for some
excellent teachable moments.
Need another spoonful of sugar to
help the medicine go down, once
you’re done with the adaptations?
P.L. Travers actually wrote a series
of eight Mary Poppins books. You’ll
have plenty of reading material to
keep your family going!
advanced reading. In fact, this adaptation
does an excellent job of capturing the
adventures of the Banks children in a
condensed format. The beautiful pictures
come from Canadian illustrator, Genevieve
Godbout from Montreal, Quebec.
