It’s the most wonderful time of the year! 

Cold winds and dazzling lights covering the whole atmosphere this Yuletide season. Loud 

celebrations and bountiful family reunions filled our calendars, making December the busiest 

month of the year. No doubt! 

After celebrating our 11th glorious year in the industry, Village Pipol wants to continue the hype 

of giving exciting content to all our readers. In this issue, we proudly feature one of the most 

bankable stars of this generation, Kim Chiu as our cover girl. As for her, success is a product — 

a product of sheer determination and hard work. From humble beginnings to being Philippines’ 

Chinita Princess, Kim’s rise to success doesn’t just end at the top. Certainly, she is the real 

manifestation that fortune favors the bold and brave. 

On the other hand, VP/Fashion highlights athleisure as the new casual. In this day and age, 

the development in fashion has given us something that no one is ready to give up—comfort. 

Arguably, it is no longer a trend but a lifestyle for it to go away anytime soon. 

This issue also gives us the opportunity to experience the cultural treasure of the Philippine 

mountain province, Sagada. The town is endowed not only with a good climate but also with 

interesting cultural beliefs, which finely makes it more exciting and memorable for young

Digging Sagada's 

Cultural Treasure

The road turned narrow and was sloping uphill. On one 

side was a mound, while on the other was a cliff. En route 

were fogs and huge trees and mountains and landslides, 

and the temperature started to drop. Take a photo of this 

and that; despite being here for a countless of times, I was 

still enthralled. And after five more hours of such a Shangrila—and 

of a butt-numbing ride—finally, the bus conductor 

announced, “We have arrived.” 

Tucked in lush, far-flung high elevation of the Philippines’ 

Mountain Province, Sagada town is endowed not only with 

a good climate but also with interesting cultural beliefs. 

An indigenous group, its Igorots (meaning, people of the 

mountain) have had a distinct tradition of burying the dead 

through hanging coffins. 

“It is believed that it is to make them get closer to the spirits,” 

Diligen, our tour guide says, “However, it is also said that it is 

to protect the dead bodies. Headhunting here was a prevalent 

practice. And some savages might be lurking in and were 

hunting for human heads to take home as their trophies.”

With its natural wealth, Sagada, too, possesses some of the wonderful gifts 

of nature. Besides a number of jaw-dropping falls, the town serves refuge 

for the deepest cave in the country: the thousands-year-old Sumaguing 

Cave. 

“Caves played an important role for our ancestors. Just like in the cliffs, 

coffins were also put here, on the entrance,” Diligen adds, “Coffins should 

not be placed in darkness. They should see light to find their way back.”

To know more of one’s culture is to taste one’s food, and in our case, 

we must try the town’s Pinikpikan. 

From the word pikpik or to hit, Pinikpikan is a chicken stew initially 

prepared by beating a live chicken with stick, sometimes to death, 

and usually comes with Etag. Smoked and stored in a wooden box, 

Etag, on the other hand, is a salted pork meat, traditionally prepared 

for celebrations and rituals in the Mountain Province. Now, it is 

commonly mixed in sisig or sautéed vegetable dishes to enrich flavor, 

and can be seen hanging on the road being sold for 80 pesos apiece.

Since candles were expensive before in Sagada, Saeng or pinewoods were 

used instead. Until now, the locals still follow the traditional Pinag Apoy—or 

the burning of woods—to commemorate the dead every 1st of November. 

Historically, the Igorots of Sagada and the neighboring towns and provinces 

are known for their resistance against alien influence. When the Spanish 

troops and Japanese guerillas tried to invade the land, the local warriors 

fought to death for their land, as much as to save their old-age tradition. 

“We do not envy other people. And if there is one thing that I’m proud of my 

being Igorot, it would be our contentment and happiness with we have,” Mike, 

a local friend we have made, says. n

mustard has a zesty effect on the dish.

Pastas are usually white however, DC Super 

Heroes Cafe offers their pasta in black! You 

hear it right, the Shrimp Bisque and Noodles 

is made of spaghetti in squid ink sauce. Mixed 

with sauteed garlic and baby squid smothered 

with aioli and shrimp bisque, this dish will oozes 

with flavor. 

The 12-hour Glazed Pork Belly is for all the pork 

lovers out there! The pork will definitely melts 

in your mouth along with mashed potatoes and 

pineapple glaze that gave a dulcet taste. But if 

you are a salad person, the Seared Tuna Salad 

is the one for you. Seared tuna in feta cheese, 

hummus, and egg gives off a mellow savory 

flavor. 

After munching on the delectable dishes, you 

can also do your Christmas shopping for your 

inaanaks because everything on display is for 

sale! Yes, you hear it right, you can purchase 

each and every item on the eatery except for 

the chairs and tables.

each dish. They are collectible items for they

is Third in Miss Scuba 

International 2018 Tilt 

ISS Scuba Philippines Noelle Fuentes 

Uy-Tuazon, a 26-year-old forensic 

M anthropologist from Tangalan, Aklan, won 

second runner-up honors at the 8th Miss Scuba 

International finals held at the grand ballroom of 

Magellan Sutera Resort in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia last 

Saturday night. 

Daisy Hope Whetlor, a 21-year-old university graduate 

from the United Kingdom, won the coveted title, first 

runner-up was Dami Huang, 23, from Chinese Taipei 

(Taiwan). 

Twenty one contestants from around the world 

competed in national costumes, swimsuits and 

evening wear, and participated in beach cleanups, 

seminars and other related activities in the pageant 

that advocates for “marine conservation and the 

protection of our oceans through beauty.” 

Noelle, a PADI-licensed open water diver, said her 

mission was “to protect the corals of our oceans 

and seas, especially in my country which is made up 

of more than seven thousand islands…” during the 

speech round of the 8 finalists.

The top 3 winners came from 8 finalists that also 

included: Kim Delsink (Netherlands), Maylada 

Nuntanuruck (Thailand), Indra Valaine (Latvia), Jenny 

Ma Yazhen (China) and Dajana Rijetkovic (South 

Africa). 

Noelle won the right to compete for Miss Scuba 

International after topping the national search last 

month that was organized by Miss Scuba International 

2015 and national director for the Philippines 

Cindy Pacia Madduma who was also in Kota Kinabalu 

to cheer and support Noelle. 

“I am very ecstatic with the placement of Noelle 

as second runner-up in the recently-concluded 

international finals,” said Cindy who is on her 

second year at the helm of choosing the Philippine 

representative to the advocacy-driven pageant 

founded by Robert Lo of Singapore. “I am sure Noelle’s 

splendid feat as second runner-up will bolster next 

year’s search!” 

Cindy’s message to Noelle, “Congratulations! I’m 

incredibly proud by what you’ve achieved at the Miss 

Scuba International 2018. 

For me, you’ll always be the Miss Scuba International 

2018. Thank you for bringing great honor to our 

country and to your Miss Scuba Philippines family. 

I love you, Noelle! Looking forward to the many 

activities we’ll be doing together for 

the pageant and for our advocacies.” 

Meanwhile, Noelle’s pageant mentor Rodgil Flores of 

the famed Kagandahang Flores pageant camp also 

praised Noelle’s performance at the finals. 

“Watching Noelle compete will make you proud of 

her performance showing confidence, charm and 

eloquence. One can really see that she is very true and 

sincere with her mission of becoming a global ocean 

ambassador,” said Flores who also attended the finals 

in Malaysia. 

You are, by far, the best representative the Philippines 

have ever had to compete on the stage of Miss Scuba 

International.

The Well-Deserved Payoff 

To be seen on television everyday was Kim Chiu's 

dream when she was younger. When she became 

a housemate for the first Pinoy Big Brother Teen 

Edition back in 2006, she was literally living the 

dream. She didn't expect winning and she certainly 

didn't expect she'd have a long career after that. 

She even joked that she's in the industry for so long 

that she found her way back to the house she came 

from. She's now hosting Pinoy Big Brother Otso and 

she confessed that it's been surreal. 

Being a PBB alumna, the Chinita Princess advised 

the new teen Housemates to enjoy. "Don't think 

about what happens after the show. Think about 

what's going on while you're still in it," she shared. 



There was a time when Kim wanted to work really 

hard everyday. She was determined to stay on the 

limelight so she seldom took breaks. She accepted 

projects left and right so she could provide for her 

family and herself. But a lot has changed since then 

and she wouldn't have it any other way. She's thankful 

for her bosses and all the projects she's had because 

they gave her an opportunity to grow and learn more. 

“I love working everyday. And I am grateful sa lahat na 

bininibigay sa’kin na work, sa lahat ng opportunities 

na dumating. But now na ageing na ako, bumaba na 

immune system ko. So I had to slow down and chill.” 

Her hard work seems to have paid off. Despite taking 

things slower now, projects still come to her. She 

has cemented her name among the stars that she's 

grateful for all the long days and sleepless nights. 

Now that she's matured, she has learned how to 

breathe more. Work would still come and she manages 

to take one step at a time. If it's for her, it's for her.

Turning Negativity to Positivity 

Years into the business, Kim eventually learned how to disregard 

the negativity and just enjoy her job. As a matter of fact, she 

thinks of negativities as hurdles she can learn a lot from. And 

being able to experience various ups and downs definitely 

contributed to Kim's brave soul. 

Aside from being the Chinita Princess, Kim Chiu in the online 

world has been notoriously dubbed as the Baldog Queen. 

"It's UAAP CDC season, 'di ba? Mukhang taun-taon na akong 

nakikisama dun eh," she interjects, referring to the annual 

participation of her ever growing meme to the cheerdance event. 

"As an entertainer, natuto akong tawanan ang sarili ko everytime 

magkamali ako. And if I laugh at my mistakes, people will learn to 

laugh at them, too, instead of them laughing directly at me." 

"The lesson I've learned from all the times I have fallen down 

on stage and in real life is to stand back up and continue with 

the show...at ‘di na magpapa-partner dun sa nag baldog sa’kin 

ever again.. Nakaka-trauma," she jokingly said about the three 

different guys (from the three different ASAP routines) who 

dropped her. 

Kim has made sure that if she falls, she falls with style. She 

knows that her work demands some level of physicality, so she 

often expects the unexpected. Being 5 foot and 6 inches with 

a shoe size of 5 inches, she has long accepted that balance will 

be something of a challenge for her. “Ang weird talaga. Hindi 

proportionate ‘yung height ko sa size ng paa ko kasi ang liit liit, 

'di ba? Pero nama-manage ko na ngayon. Lalo na ngayon na I do 

sports," she shared. 

Her health has always been the talk of the town. She didn’t mind 

being called thin because that’s how her body was. It was only 

earlier this year that she embraced fitness. After doing her soap 

Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin, she has maintained to insert running, 

cycling, and swimming whenever she can. 

“Nagustuhan ko yung sports. Stress-reliever din pala ‘yun ng 

kung anuman. Plus, doon nabuo yung katawan ko. Nagkabewang 

na ako, nagka-legs na ako, di na siya tingting. Unti-unti 

nang nagde-develop ang katawan ko. Marami namang nangyari 

‘dun sa ginawa ko, 'di ba? Sarap din pala pagpapapawis. Sarap 

sa pakiramdam na nakakatanggal ng sadness, ng anxiety.”

Family Is Her Greatest Love 

All the things Kim has done in the twelve years 

as a Kapamilya actress have been for her family. 

She's gone through a lot at an early age and her 

family has been with her ever since. They have 

been her inspiration for a lot of decisions she’s 

made in her life and career. With the way she 

talks about her family and how her eyes glow, it 

is clear how much she loves them. 

“They have been my anchor,” she said as she 

described her family. “Kasali talaga sila sa mga 

desisyon ko. Hindi pwede na hindi.” 

In a way, loving has been Kim's greatest asset. 

The way she loves her work and her family is 

a testament to that. With so much going on, 

she also learned that loving too much can be 

painful. She guards her heart and she does not 

allow herself "..to fall agad kasi natakot na eh." 

She said it with a smile, but it is clear that Kim 

has learned and that she’s stronger now. 

Kim believes she had to take up more 

challenging roles -- roles that bring out a 

version of her the public doesn’t always see. 

She knows that growth will not happen if she 

stays with the same kinds of roles. A part of her 

decision to show her strength as an actress was 

accepting her recent movie. 

She read somewhere before about what her 

next big move would be, and it has definitely 

stuck with her. She has done rom-coms, period 

pieces, pure comedy, and horror. She believed 

it was time to do something new. When the 

opportunity came knocking on her door, she 

grabbed it. One Great Love is a movie she topbills 

with Dennis Trillo and JC de Vera. It’s the 

first time she has worked with both men and 

the story was what pulled her in even more. 

When she read the script, she realized it was 

the project she was looking for. What’s next 

for Kim Chiu? She finally answered with a love 

scene. 

“You will definitely see a different Kim in One 

Great Love. You will see things na 'di ko pa 

nagagawa ever sa isang project. Magugulat 

na lang kayo. Ako nga nagulat din. Nung napreview 

ko yung movie, I was like ‘Ako yan???’ 

Kakaiba pero relatable sa lahat. Working with 

Dennis and JC was fun. It was like seeing GMA 

and ABS working in one film, and it was nice.”

The Shock-Absorber 

To fall in love so hard has been something Kim 

did not expect to happen again. She has been 

focused on her career and her family that she 

learned to independently breeze through life 

with her charm and grace. She may not fall 

easily for a guy, but as long as he has a sense of 

humor, is a gentleman, and loves her family as 

she does -- he's a keeper. However, things may 

have taken a romantic turn for her. It seems that 

she has fallen head over heels yet again. But 

this time, someone has caught her. 

Speaking about the “One Great Love” in her life, 

she says she may have found him. After years 

of speculation, Kim Chiu and Xian Lim have 

recently gone public about their relationship. 

“Tulad ng fiber glass stage ng ASAP na 

sumasalo sa’kin kapag nahuhulog ako, Xian 

has always been there para saluhin ako. He’s 

my shock-absorber. Kakausapin ko lang siya, 

nawawala agad ang stress ng araw ko. Kaya 

niya pakinggan mga rants ko and that’s what I 

love about him.” 

Seeing the Chinita Princess achieving so much 

and being contented with what she has is 

satisfying. Everything has laid out perfectly in 

front of her as she makes her way along the 

industry that embraced her with arms wide 

open. 

The result of all the sacrifices Kim has made 

has been sweet. Her hustle has paid off tenfold, 

and her grind is no where near stopping just 

yet. She may fall a few times but she already 

knows how to stand back up. She knows how 

crashing feels so falling isn’t something she 

worries so much anymore. Her focus now is 

how to stand back up even gracefully. In show 

business where priorities change as fast as the 

next trend, Kim's heart remains the same. She 

still is the Kim who dreams to be seen on TV 

everyday. She is still the daughter and sister 

who will do anything for her family. She is also 

definitely the one who knows the value of 

determination and sacrifice. 



Deserving of the crown she has worked hard 

for, the Chinita Princess is the flower in an ever 

growing garden. She is art hanging in timeless 

museums. She has bloomed to become who 

she is now. Her graceful charm is her own art 

form. 

This is Kim Chiu's payoff. n

apuso newbie Joaquin Manansala can safely 

say he started on the right and familiar track 

before entering the show business. Before he 

became a rising star, he was a model of popular local 

and international brands as well as TV commercial 

talent. 

It was a simple nudge that brought Joaquin to 

his senses. A potential like that shouldn’t go to 

waste, that’s what his manager thought when he 

encouraged Joaquin to venture to the world of 

entertainment. Luckily, there’s a place waiting for 

him. 

Now that he is in, what has it been for him so far? 


“I realized I can achieve great things if I set goals 

and work hard for it. I gained more confidence,” he 

said. “Since I was exposed to all kinds of people, mas 

lumawak ang pananaw ko or perspective sa buhay.” 

During our exclusive with Joaquin, we asked him to 

describe himself in five words only. He successfully 

did and called himself passionate, determined, 

comedic, gentleman and God-fearing. No wonder he 

already established a great fan base! 

It is just the beginning for him and we know for sure 

even greater opportunities will knock on his door. 

Later in our conversation, he even admitted that 

he's still not used to the spotlight, in fact, he said he 

might never do. 




“Everyday may bagong experience na kakaiba and 

madalas, nakakataba ng puso.” 

If there’s anything Joaquin can impart to you readers 

or even his younger self, it is to wait for the right 

timing because he swears it is worth it. Five years 

from now, he hopes for the best for his career. 

The buzz on Joaquin is simple. This industry might 

bring a lot of challenges in the beginning and during 

the process, but the end of the rainbow, the peak, is 

fulfilling. He knows that for sure. n

Where do you wanna see yourself in five years? 

I am working hard for a consistently rising career 

in showbiz so I guess I will still be an actor/ 

model in five years, sana may lead roles na in tv 

shows and movies, and at the same time starting 

a new business of my own. 

What do you like doing in your spare time? 

I’m a simple person lang. I like spending time 

with my family, going to the gym, playing online 

games, reading books, watching TV series, and 

on weekends, hanging out with friends 

How would someone get your special 

attention? I am easily attracted to interesting 

and positive people and good conversations. 

She has to be really smart and funny to get my 

attention. 

What makes you smile and what scares you 

the most? I usually smile after eating a hearty 

breakfast. Takot ako sa multo hahaha. 

Who is your celebrity crush? 

Anne Hathaway and Catriona Gray 

Name one actor/actress you would love to get 

naughty with? 

Margot Robbie, the one who played Harley 

Quinn and sa local actresses, Pia Wurtzbach kaso 

she’s taken na.

In over a decade, fashion has been feeding 

our appetite to stand out while bringing 

less attention to ourselves. It constantly 

thrives on assimilation and conformation, 

a paradox in all sorts of way. 

Rigid dress codes are but a thing of the 

past. With an era fuelled by millennials 

and Generation Z, both modern and onthe-go, 

a revolution in sneakers, hoodies, 

and parkas is on the rise. Athleisure is the 

new casual. 


It is described as a category of clothing 

meant to look athletic that people can 

wear in an everyday setting. Although, 

athleisure is largely sold to non-athletes 

who care more about fashion than its 

function. 

To most designers, it is considered a 

cardinal sin due to the merged marketsavvy 

moniker it was coined from. Yet, 

coveted brands like Valentino and Gucci 

are combining the codes of sportswear 

and haute couture. Convenience is 

always hard to contest. 



This has also been increasingly accepted 

in several social events. Even some workappropriate 

clothes incorporate sportsinspired 

materials such as lycra and 

spandex. Versatility is its edge compared 

to other apparels, while its focus on 

performance gave it a boost. 

Despite being fitness-inspired, you 

just can't put on a jogging pants and 

a shirt and call it athleisure. Tailoring 

is still essential. Just because you're 

wearing what's supposed to be for the 

gym doesn't mean it has to be sloppy or 

baggy. 


Pick an outfit that is proportionally fitted 

to you, and always know whether it suits 

the occasion or not. There's always a thin 

line between laziness and practicability. 

In a rather dynamic industry, to adapt 

with society’s ever-changing culture is 

important. This development in fashion 

has given us something that no one is 

ready to give up—comfort. Arguably, it 

is no longer a trend but a lifestyle for it to 

go away anytime soon. n

beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Enjoy! 

#1: THE HOLIDAY CALENDAR #3: DOGS #5. NAILED IT! HOLIDAY 

Abby, a talented but struggling 

photographer, is stuck in a dead-end job. 

Her life makes a major turnaround when 

she inherits an antique Advent calendar 

that seems to predict the future. Sounds 

fetching, don't you think? Oh, in case you 

didn't notice, it's our Bonnie from Vampire

recreating holiday-themed goodies for a

sequel to the Christmas Prince. This time, 

the couple prepares for a Christmas royal 

wedding while the prince secures the 

crown. How will our favorite journalist 

come to terms possibly living soon as a 

royalty? With a looming political crisis, this 

movie will be a feast on its own. 

#8: CHILLING ADVENTURES OF 

SABRINA: A MIDWINTER'S TALE 

Even now, a few months after its first 

release, Sabrina has left us breathless 

with all her spellcasting and demonsummoning. 

Our teenage witch is not done 

bringing magic to our world as she brews 

a special episode. In the Church of Night's 

celebration of the winter solstice, they
