tinleyjunction.com SCHOOL the tinley junction | January 3, 2019 | 13 Year in Review 2018 Andrew celebrates 40th anniversary, much more Year in Review 2018 Successes go beyond the classroom at <strong>TP</strong>HS Robert Nolting Victor J. Andrew High School Principal In 2018, Andrew celebrated its 40th Anniversary. We even published a book written by our own students that showcased a long tradition of excellence and a sense of community that encompasses all we do at Andrew. In its 40th year, we have obtained new heights in academics, athletics, and fine arts. In 2018, VJA was honored among best schools in the nation according to the Washington Post’s “America’s Most Challenging Schools”, US News as “Best High Schools”, and Niche.com’s “Best Schools in America.” I am proud to say that these recognitions have become an annual tradition. We are very proud to continue to record set standards in Advanced Placement participation and have been recognized for performance. The array of talent we exhibited within the fine arts was incredible in 2018. Our Wind Symphony has truly become a nationally recognized group. Once again, they were invited to Illinois Superstate and were a featured performer at the Illinois Music Education Association state festival. Andrew was the only Wind Symphony in Illinois to receive this years’ National Mark of Excellence. Andrew continued to prove it is a destination school for the visual arts. Group Interpretation competed at the IHSA state festival for the first time, while our play, “The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail” was selected by Illinois Theaterfest to be a featured production among all schools in Illinois. Finally, our art program realized major awards for students Mia Montoya, Allison VonderHeide, Emma Loconte, and Jose Romo while Nathan Dring won the Congressional Art Contest and has his piece displayed at the Congressional Building in Washington, DC. Athletics was absolutely historic at VJA. Several conference championships, but none more notable that our boys basketball team who won the tough SWSC Championship for only the second time in our school’s history. Baseball was a conference and regional champ, while football qualified for the IHSA State Tournament for the second year in a row. We also had girls bowling, cheerleading and chess qualify for the IHSA state tournaments. We are proud of our competitive dance/ poms team who placed 5th in the IHSA State Tournament and our girls soccer team who placed 4th - while also winning the IHSA’s Sportsmanship Award. Most proudly, 90 percent of all our athletic teams were recognized by the IHSA on the list of All-Academic teams. Also in athletics, we recognized state champions. Two of our Special Olympics basketball teams won the ISOC State Tournament in Bloomington. Also, in the fall, our Unified Soccer team won the first ever IHSA/ISOC State Title. Immensely proud of these efforts. Related to athletics, Class of 2018 member Jon Zaghloul was selected as the Top High School Broadcaster in the country by the National Federation of High Schools. We are immensely proud of Jon, who also is the voice of the Windy City Thunderbolts baseball team and has his own sports podcast where he has interviewed the likes of Roger Clemens, Fergie Jenkins, Greg Gumbel, and Jim Mc- Mahon. Finally, Andrew has been a leader in green initiatives within the state of Illinois. Due to efforts of students and staff, we have added natural habitats to our Outdoor Learning Center, east parkway drive, and, most recently, adding natural plants and vegetation to Lake Andrew. These efforts not only create outdoor classrooms for our science department, but help the environment by creating natural pollinators and controlling pollution in our area. We are honored to receive state grants to fund these initiatives and receive state recognition for excellence! For VJA, 2018 was incredible, but 2019 promises to be filled with more in store for our Tbolts. Theresa Nolan Tinley Park High School Principal The Titans wish a Happy New Year to all of our Tinley Park residents. We are excited to ring in 2019, while we fondly reflect upon the happenings of 2018. As we highlight our academic successes, activities and partnerships, coupled with our major construction project, it is easy to see the display of Titan Pride. On the academic front, the Titan family is proud of our senior students who await acceptance letters to universities of their choice. Schools where our senior students applied include: Princeton, Yale, University of Chicago, Northwestern, UCLA, Georgetown and Notre Dame, just to name a few. We congratulate our Illinois State Scholars and our Titan Achievers who continue to lead by example and raise our academic bar of excellence. In May of 2018, 264 graduates crossed the stage. Those 264 graduates amassed a whopping $7,102,890.00 in scholarships. All of our amazing students are led by a talented faculty who, this year, has earned 21 Golden Apple Award Nominations for Excellence in Teaching. We are extremely proud of the efforts of our Titan teachers. Athletically, the Titans continued to make their mark. During 2018, the Titans brought home SSC Conference honors in boys swimming and earned a regional title in boys baseball. We also celebrated individual state qualifying athletes in wrestling, boys track, girls track and boys tennis. Our cheerleading team, along with Solomon Wilson-Smith (Track 1st) and Rebecca Beltran (Discus 7th) earned state finalist accolades. We look forward to adding to our list for 2019. We are definitely proud of our academic and athletic accomplishments, but the Titans don’t stop there. What about the Fine Arts programming at Tinley Park High School? Our amazing Titan band continues to be the talk of the town with holiday performances both at the school and held in the Village. Under the direction of Vince Aiello, the Titan Band program is thriving and certainly well-sought after. Our choir program, too, is thriving and the numbers have tripled under the direction of Victor Pazick. Our Titan Drama program, under the direction of Melissa Heniff, performed its first major musical, Grease. It was a smashing success, The Drama program continued with a fall performance of George Orwell’s, 1984. Next up for the Titan Drama Troupe: “Mama Mia!” It’s amazing to experience the talents of our students and it is even better when we can share these gifts with our community. Speaking of sharing and community…our Titans work tirelessly to reach out and help those in need. In 2018, we had multiple food drives, a coat drive, a collection for soldiers, charitable fundraisers, a letter writing campaign to support to a Marine (<strong>TP</strong>HS Alum) and provided Christmas presents to underprivileged preschool students. We partnered with The Bridge Teen Center and also partnered with our local families while we celebrated an amazing display of diversity with our 2018 International Festival. We welcomed local senior citizens to join us for a showcase of performances, a game of BINGO and post-Thanksgiving lunch so they can see the remarkable students that walk the halls of Tinley Park High School. We are proud to be a community school that directly participates with the community to make a positive impact. Finally…a construction update. We have enjoyed our second season competing on our new turf football field and anxiously await the opening of our new Field House and Fitness Center. The opening is expected during the summer of 2019. What an amazing addition to Tinley Park High School and to our community. It’s always a great time to be a Titan.
